PalmSundayofthePassionoftheLordMarch28,2021
Message from Father Robert:
Last week, I wrote of the parish’s celebration of Palm Sunday, this week I will explain how we are going to celebrate the Sacred Triduum, which is the most beautiful celebration in the life of the Church. Once again thank God we can celebrate it publically, even if it may be modified. However, before I go into detail, this Monday is “Reconciliation Monday” and there will be a priest available for confessions from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. in all parishes of the Archdiocese of New York. On Thursday. Friday, and Saturday there will be the office of Tenebrae with Morning Prayer at 9:00 a.m. The Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be at 7:00 p.m., there will be two services for Good Friday 3:00 p.m. in English and 5:00 p.m. in Spanish both in the church, and the Easter Vigil will be at 8:00 p.m. We will also have the blessing of Easter foods between 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Holy Saturday. For the Mass of the Lord’s Supper there will be no washing of the feet, surprisingly it is an optional rite, also we hope to set up an Altar of Repose for the procession of the Blessed Sacrament in which there will be a period of silent adoration until 11:00 p.m. We kindly ask everyone to remain in their seats for the procession and to adore the Blessed Sacrament from your place. On Good Friday there will be no outdoor Stations of the Cross. During the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion only the priest will venerate and kiss the Cross, then lead everyone into a general Adoration of the Cross. We are happy to announce that five individuals will be received into the Church during the Easter Vigil so there will be reserved seating for them and their guests, and given the concerns of many there will probably no lighting and blowing out of individual candles. Once again we kindly ask for your patience and understanding as well as thank you immensely for it in advance. Within the past two weeks I received a surprise in the mail, it was a book entitled Grace in Season: The Riches of the Gospels in Seventy Sermons by Archbishop Augustine Di Noia, O.P. The book is simply his published homilies which are very profound especially his ones during Holy Week. I would like to conclude with what he said in a Palm Sunday homily that reminds us of the essence of the Holy Week ceremonies despite any differences we might experience this year. May God bless you and your families during this sacred time of grace. “The celebrations of Holy Week give us opportunities at every turn to participate in the Paschal Mystery not just as onlookers but as actors in the events commemorated. We are there, albeit liturgically and sacramentally, but nonetheless really. This is a special grace of the Holy Week liturgies: so profoundly to enter into the mysteries of Christ’s passion as to receive their benefits in the depths of our hearts and to imitate in our lives the pattern of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our beloved Savior and Lord. Amen.” (p.62)
