    The body in question1999-2005

This body of ours.something we read each day. We use it to store information; we use it to

    express ourselves.

In the search for universal symbols that will convey emotional meaning, the body is something

I turn to time and again.

The gesture, the look, not a portrait, not even a whole, just a glimpse of something that says

much morebodies, we all have them.

Life drawing is to the artist as playing scales is for musicians. It helps to hone the eye and

    sharpen ones practice.

Bronwyn Davies has been drawing from life since she was 12 years old. Her work is based on

interpretations of the world as seen through the body. She uses texture and a variety of

traditional and avant- garde materials to create her mixed media drawings. Bronwyn has been

involved with the Tamborine Mountain festival of arts, the Plink- Age Youth Festival, and most

recently was director of the Evolution Festival Mixed Media Experiments with Truth. She is

convenor of world music events at Club Zamia and is currently studying for a grad dip in Arts

Management. She has Exhibited throughout Qld and her work is held in private and corporate

collections throughout Australia. She dreams of drawing every day and running an arts

    collective called Hippy Heaven!

The lovers- Oils on Canvas 100 cm x 150 cm $900

From 1997-2000 I shared a studio with fellow artist Kate French. The

studio was next to an avocado orchard behind a daggy brick box of a

house. It was a dream studio; triple garage size, roller door, plenty of

light, space to stand back from your work.

I lived down the road: a newly single mother with 3 young children. Kate

    and her family lived nearby.

In the house at the front lived a writer, an ex policeman, who was writing

biographies of serial murderers on the internet.

    It was a bohemian time.

Kate worked on her sculpture and I worked on my paintings and drawings.

I was always broke. People were always dropping in, there was alwayslaughter, singing and music. Kate had just started learning guitar and she

loved it. She bought old guitars, stripped them back and then painted

    them.

I wanted to call the space legs off the wall studio. It was such a crazy,

happy space and though we were both poor, we both were very creative at

    that time.

I painted the portrait of Kate to try and capture

some of her love of life and music at that time.

In 2000 there was a storm on the mountain

and the painting fell over and got a slight L-

shaped tear that was professionally repaired.

    Looking for universal symbols2005-2007

I had never thought of my studies of the body to be overtly sexual, more about an exploration of how the body can convey

certain meanings through the body language and posture. The work using the body was problematic in that different cultures

approached body language with varied understndings.

In my search for more universally understood images to convey meaning I turned to colour. Could colour conjure up in visual

language what I wanted to express?

This too had its problems. New age colour therapy prescribed numerous alternative meanings and attibutes to colour, and my

brush with the Evolution festival and a new partner with a more scientific background saw me looking at colour through the

long lens of evolution and how colours are perceived in nature as indicators of danger or abundance.

I looked to pattern and ritual to understand how various cultures embellish and create patterns that carry with them cultural

    information and meaning.

Living on Tamborine Mountain ultimately I drew on the natural world for inspiration.

Kurdaitcha men magic men Bone pointer

These shoes are made of emu feathers stuck together in a solid mass with human blood and so shaped that there can be no distinguishing toe from heel

and thus the direction of the Kurdaitcha cannot be traced. Before they are attached to the feet the little toe of the left foot must be dislocated and cut. A

small blood-suckinglizard collects this blood which is highly magical and stores it in readiness for the making of other shoes. Well made Kurdaitcha shoes

have an opening on one side to accommodate the disjointed toe. Chanting accompanies this procedure. The shoes are bidden to cling well to the feet of

the Kurdaitcha and to leave no trace behind them.
