The campus and iTs surroundingsThe University of Twente is the only campus university in the Netherlands. Here 9,300 students and 3,300 employees study, work

and unwind in the beautiful green grounds. The attractive campus, built on a country estate just outside the city of Enschede, provides an academic, social and safe setting where students quickly become active members of a thriving community. The University of Twente has state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research and an excellent library. It also has the lowest cost of living and accommodation of any Dutch university.

The university offers a variety of services on campus: a wide range of sports facilities, a medical centre, counselling facilities, a hotel, worship facilities and much more. Students can meet up at one of the campus restaurants, cafés or bars, all of which offer affordable meals. With over 50 sports and cultural associations active on campus, our students have access to a wide range of leisure activities.

The nearby city of Enschede is buzzing with student life and home to about 20,000 students. Enschede is close to the German border, but still only a two-hour drive or train journey from Amsterdam. It is also within easy distance of major European capitals like Berlin, London and Paris. ‘As Professor of Innovative Entrepreneurship, I am leading NIKOS – our knowledge centre for

entrepreneurship and innovation. In this capacity, I am involved in researching, teaching and supporting

the entrepreneurial activities of students, staff and others who like to work with the University of

Twente’s top tier expertise in the fields of technology and the behavioural and social sciences.’

The University of Twente is known as a truly entre¬preneurial university for over 30 years. In essence, entrepreneurship is all about value creation for society. The University of Twente delivers engaged scholarship: all disciplines provide excellent research and education on relevant societal issues such as sustainability, health, safety and mobility. Since 1999, students have had the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial skills in the minor innovation & entrepreneurship, which is open to all students.

Hundreds of start-ups developed into firms with strong potential. Some are now established companies like Cheaptickets.nl, Booking.com and PNO subsidy consultancy. More recently, SolmateS, Medimate, Blue4green and Micronit are examples of fast growing Spin offs built on radical, new technologies developed at

the University of Twente in the fields of IT, nanotechnology and biomedical technology. To increase the chances of a successful start–up phase and to improve the growth prospects of existing and sometimes already large companies, NIKOS produces new methods of business development (4 S model) and support methods. mosT enTerprising universiTy 2013On Tuesday 11 June the University of Twente was voted the best Dutch university in the area of valorization, i.e. translating scientific knowledge into social and economic benefits. Valorization is the third core function of universities, after education and research. The University of Twente heads the Valorization Ranking 2013 announced at the Valorization Day conference. The ranking is a joint venture of the ScienceWorks research and consultancy firm and Elsevier.

google norvig Web daTa science aWardUniversity of Twente Computer Science students Oliver Jundt, Lesley Wevers and Wanno Drijfhout were the winners of the Google Norvig Web Data Science Award. On 18 March 2013, Google scientific director Peter Norvig granted them the award, communicating via live video connection. The three Master’s students won the award for their contribution in the contest: Show what you can do with 6 billion webpages. In response they developed a system, entitled Traitor, enabling a linking of words that can be frequently found in a sentence or article, to improve search engine results.

2012 research aWard for young scienTisTsThe World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently awarded the 2012 Research Award for Young Scientists to Yijian Zeng, who is employed by the University of Twente’s Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC). This prestigious award was conferred on him in recognition of a paper he published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, on the effects of air flow in soil models.

uT sTudenTs among usa’s kairos 50University of Twente students Giels Brouwer (MSc Business Administration), Anatoliy Babic (BSc Applied Mathematics) and Remco van der Veen (BSc Business Information Technology), with their various backgrounds, are the co-founders of SciSports. Since September 2012 they have been selling optimum selections to football clubs based on scouting and mathematical modelling. In January 2013 they were chosen to be among the USA’s Kairos 50, the most promising start-ups in the world.

applied MatheMatics

Through mathematical models, abstractions of

reality, you as an applied mathematician see the

general structure, the core of the problem, and the

relation among seemingly unrelated problems.

Applied Mathematics distinguishes itself from pure mathematics more in attitude and motivation than in content. It derives inspiration for its own development from related fields such as physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, economics and computer science. As a matter of fact, mathematics – and certainly applied mathematics – has largely developed in response to the need to formulate and solve questions in those fields. In short, it is the language of scientific communication par excellence.

A Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics will open a great many doors in your future career. Regardless of whether you are eventually employed by a private company, a research institute or a university, a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics represents a crucial step in your development, making you a highly prized professional.

As a student of applied mathematics, you will work closely with a range of disciplines such as physics, (industrial) engineering, medicine and computer science. In the second phase of your study you will participate in your supervisor’s research endeavours and you will be considered a junior member of the chair.

Are you interested in physical phenomena, scientific principles and their applications? Then Applied Physics is the programme for you.

Applied Physics is rooted in the fundamental truths and basic laws that describe the world around us. You will focus on using scientific principles in practical devices and systems, and on the application of physics in other fields.

I majored in chemical engineering and I was always determined to work in biological sciences from an engineering point of view. I therefore wanted to be involved in a research field where I could work as an engineer while focusing on the life sciences. My aim is to contribute to the life sciences by studying cell biology and material science using a systematical approach. Biomedical engineering gives me the chance to work in this interdisciplinary way. In one year, I have learned a tremendous amount. Now I can see problems and processes from two different perspectives.

I first heard of the University of Twente at an International Study Fair while I was a Bachelor’s student in Ankara. I was told about the opportunity to apply for an internship at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology in the field of chemical engineering. I finished my internship in the summer of 2010 and it was a very happy three months for me. I had to return to Ankara to finish my Bachelor’s, but I decided to come back to Twente for my Master’s.

I would recommend the University of Twente to anyone. In terms of research and education, you have access to a great many resources and you can focus on your interests freely and extensively. Accessibility is a very important merit of the research environment. It’s easy to communicate with the professors and researchers, to share your ideas and to develop new skills. From a non-academic perspective, the university campus and the city of Enschede offer you the chance to enrich your social and personal life.

Biomedical Engineering is about the design and

development of technology in healthcare. For

example rehabilitation robots, artificial organs,

imaging techniques and prosthetics.

Biomedical Engineering is an interdisciplinary field, combining engineering and natural and life sciences, like biology, nanotechnology, physics and mechanical engineering. As a biomedical engineer, you create technical solutions to medical problems by integrating scientific and engineering concepts and methodology.

Technology plays an important role in prevention, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation. Biomedical research results in new techniques to repair damaged tissue such as bone and skin. It helps create drugs with targeted effects and equips doctors with improved imaging techniques for more effective diagnosis, as well as offering patient-focused solutions in rehabilitation technology.

The Master’s at the University of Twente is an academic programme that will prepare you for a job as a biomedical engineer in healthcare, industry or research institutions including PhD positions, in settings that range from hospitals and rehabilitation centres to enterprises, small medical technology companies and laboratories.

problems.

All companies sometimes face complex business challenges. These may involve short-term or long-term strategies, implementing a sound business concept, HRM policy, the improvement of financial services or the introduction of sustainable innovation or change.

The Master of Science (MSc) degree programme in Business Administration teaches you how to help organizations improve their operations and to solve these kinds of problems. You will work on these solutions in a challenging, high-tech environment by combining state-of-the-art theory with practical application.

You will take courses in Accounting & Financial Management, Managing Change & Human Resources, Global Strategy & Marketing and Management of Organisation, Operations and Technological Innovation. Embedded systems are hardware and/or software systems whose purpose is to control a device, a process or a larger system. In terms of studying, I found it tough sometimes because of the strict requirements and because my classmates were so smart. But my fellow students and my professors were all very helpful and gave me a hand to get though the difficult times. The programme really helped me develop my professional skills and proactive attitude.

I also had a chance to do a six-month internship at NXP and take a part-time job at the S&C office. This career experience helped me to develop quickly in terms of technical and social skills. It felt like I had taken my first step from the campus to becoming part of Dutch society. I really like the democratic and enthusiastic working atmosphere. Besides fulfilling my job requirements, I also made many friends among my colleagues and even with my boss!

vital role to play in our world. How can we ensure

that geographical data is organized, managed and

applied optimally to solve societal problems?

Businesses and local residents are eager to consult the planning restrictions of their town or city to find out whether their building plans are likely to be approved. It is challenging to make this information easily and digitally accessible and in a visually effective form. A university not only wants to support outdoor navigation on their campus, but also indoor navigation in all publicly accessible areas of buildings on the campus. What data is needed and what kind of functionality will a mobile app need to have to help people navigate through these spaces?

These are just two examples of the wide variety of spatial information issues that geographical information experts have to deal with. Geo-information is a rapidly growing industry

worldwide. Geographical information systems

(GIS) and remote sensing tools can be used for

solving real-world problems and complex issues.

This may involve determining places at risk for landslides, mapping forest fires and biodiversity, planning urban infrastructure, implementing land administration systems, monitoring and analysing food and water security, designing an effective wildlife management system or detecting environmental pollution. The uses are many and varied and have already made their appearance in our daily lives to some extent.

GIS and remote sensing were traditionally used by governments, ministries, research institutes, provinces and municipalities. In recent years, however, they have expanded to all organizations where spatial information plays an important role − from public service corporations and telecommunications companies to water authorities and retailers.

Having an ITC degree made it very easy for me to find a job. The programme has a strong reputation for producing competent and independent junior researchers. I am currently working as a GIS application developer at ICIMOD, Khumaltar, Lalitpur, Nepal. My main responsibilities are developing GIS-based web and desktop applications using open source and commercial GIS/remote sensing software tools, and documenting the applications we develop. My job is innovative and somewhat challenging: I frequently have to deal with new problems in today’s competitive world. This Master’s programme focuses specifically on intelligent, multimodal systems offering a natural form of interaction. By employing a broad range of input modalities to observe and intelligently interpret user actions, these intelligent interactive systems aim to automatically determine user objectives and operational context and make the necessary adjustments. When I started my Bachelor’s degree, I opted for the University of Twente because of the ambiance and the small scale. At this university, you’re not a number. During my Bachelor’s in Industrial Design, I discovered what my strengths and weaknesses were.

When it came time to choose a Master’s programme, I wanted to learn more about the subjects I liked while improving on my weaker points. I found this combination in the Management of Product Development specialization. It is unique in its flexibility. There is a huge course catalogue, and the professors really understand where you’re coming from. As a student, I feel very independent but I know I can always count on the teaching staff for support.

I still have a few more courses left to take, but so far I have learned that there are many ways to solve a problem (whether it is design-related or otherwise. As for my personal goal of improving my weaker points, I have broadened my knowledge while improving my employability. Design management, packaging development, life-cycle assessments, scenarios and product life management are all subjects I had never even heard of before I started my Master’s, but now they are all part of my expertise.

I decided to enrol at the University of Twente mainly for two reasons. First and foremost, I was impressed by the school’s reputation. Twente is recognized worldwide, especially in the field of nanotechnology. Secondly, the University of Twente is the only true campus university in Netherlands with high-tech facilities and an exciting atmosphere.

During my first year of studies, my experiences at UT really enriched my personal life. The courses were fascinating and the professors inspiring. They linked theory to practice by illustrating their courses with examples from their own research experience. The teaching environment with all the modern facilities was top-notch, and everyone had the opportunity to work in high-tech laboratories with the most modern equipment and instrumentation.Currently, I am working on my Master’s thesis project as a member of the Physics of Interfaces and Nanomaterials research group. I am studying the growth of metallic nanowires on semiconductor surfaces by using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy.

Since last year I have also been a part-time employee at the University of Twente. I work in the department of marketing and communication as a student assistant. Furthermore, for the last couple of months I have also been a student tutor, which gives me the opportunity to teach younger students. Besides my studies and work, I also try to stay fit. I go to the UT sports centre whenever I have some free time and I play football with friends. The university offers a wide variety of activities and sports at amazingly affordable prices.

I finished my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at California State University cum laude. I am now studying Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society. When I finish my Master’s degree, I would like to do a PhD.

I chose this Master’s programme because it combines what I love – philosophy – with my background as a computer scientist. I didn’t want to completely give up on what I had done before and what I was good at. However, I have always wanted to study philosophy. This programme gave me the unique opportunity to do both, which is why I came to the University of Twente.

In one course I got the assignment to choose a technology and analyse it in terms of an ethical approach that we had discussed in class. The analysis resulted in many new questions which must be answered if we are to properly analyse educational technologies. This gives rise to a debate about what it means to be educated, and what the goal of education is.

I came into this programme with an extremely critical attitude. I think that we are adopting technologies so fast, focusing only on the good things they bring us without stopping to consider the negative side effects. The mobile phone (and now the smart phone) has led to the expectation that you are connected to a specific place, with specific people all the time, never letting you truly live in the moment. We are dividing our attention between the people we are with, Facebook friends and texts. For me, this splintering of our attention is causing us to do everything haphazardly, superficially. Ten years ago we had no need for all these networks, and we all got along just fine. We need to accurately understand what these things mean for our lives in a positive sense, and we need to comprehend the negative side effects in order to use technology appropriately.

organizations are facing increasingly high

demands.

A changing society confronts the government with new challenges to which it must respond and new conditions it has to meet. Finding answers in terms of policy and fulfilling the conditions in terms of democracy, effectiveness and efficiency tests the internal performance of public organizations, and particularly their management. To successfully complete its tasks, management has to integrate the various aspects of performance and ensure that work is carried out professionally. Consequently, there is a growing need for multidisciplinary managers. The Master’s in Public Management programme offers a multidisciplinary, analytical and creative approach to the issues and problems faced by managers in the public sector. This programme for professionals is a part-time Master’s, given mostly in Utrecht, for those who have a career in pubic management and have completed a higher education study.

The Master’s Public Management consists of six master classes, each addressing a crucial aspect of public management. The first year addresses such themes as organizational management, human resource management, financial management, information management, management of politics and policy management in the first three master classes. programme focuses both on the (semi)public

sector and on the private sector. The organization

and the management perspective are a central

theme of the programme.

After following the Master’s, graduates need to have insight into societal and business risks with their internal and external components: a societal risk like global warming may impact an organization as well as the organization may cause risks for society. Business risks can also be internal or external, from its business perspectives and risks that occur within the context of networks like extended enterprises and supply chains.

Graduates will have an understanding of and insight into various specialist risk management themes in order to develop an adequate vision and policy - with or without interaction with specialists. Examples are financial risks, project risks and technological risks.

For applications, think about (mobile) robots, production machines, micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), chemical processes, biomechanical devices etc. Students investigate methods for obtaining mathematical models that reflect the key features of a system by employing differential equations, inequalities, algebraic equations or logical constraints. The next step is to simulate these models using advanced simulation methods. The programme also focuses on techniques for prediction and estimation. The final purpose is to control a system using a control algorithm, e.g. using feed-forward or feedback. This will require to choose inputs and imposing additional constraints on certain variables to influence the system so as to obtain certain desired behaviour. This activity is part of the system design.

Depending on your specialization you will concentrate on elaborating theoretical aspects of control or you may emphasize the technology of developing mechatronic devices and systems.

The safe and innovative use of medical technology calls for healthcare professionals with specific expertise. Professionals with a solid scientific, medical and engineering background. You can become just such an expert in a new programme that integrates the medical and technical domain to create a single new expert domain: Technical Medicine. The Master’s programme in Technical Medicine provides the academic training for the new healthcare professional: the technical physician. A technical physician is a true scientist-practitioner who has the medical knowledge and skills, professional acumen and problem-solving abilities to design improved, safe technological diagnostic strategies or therapies for specific patient problems, and who is able to apply these in direct patient care. Examples include advising treatment for tumours situated in difficult locations, integrating automated evaluation of EEG signals and improving decision support systems for the diagnosis and treatment of a patient’s impaired ventilation.

This interdisciplinary programme consists of a three-year Bachelor’s and a three-year Master’s degree.

An integral part of this process will be writing your PhD thesis, which you will present and defend in public at the end of your PhD programme. Doing a PhD certainly feels like a bridge between student life and working life, and I’ve experience a perfect mix of both at the University of Twente. I found myself applying to Twente for one important reason: the theme of my PhD dissertation, which is on tissue regeneration.

After my interview, I discovered a dozen more reasons to continue my academic career here: modern architecture, lush green landscape, and tremendous sports and cultural facilities. The exciting social life at the University of Twente is the icing on the cake. And all of the university’s high-tech buildings provide ideal facilities for cutting-edge multidisciplinary fields.

One of the best things about doing research here is the way in which different groups and institutes complement each other. I feel at ease discussing my research problems with my supervisor, colleagues in the lab and even people outside my group. Working in the field of tissue regeneration, you need knowledge and skills from other disciplines, and many of Twente’s labs

collaborate closely with one another and even with labs outside the university.

Being a PhD researcher at the University of Twente involves extra responsibilities, such as teaching and supervising other students. Though it’s demanding sometimes, I personally feel that all of these activities are a perfect complement to my dissertation. After almost two years as a PhD candidate at the university, I’ve not only taken on many responsibilities and tasks to enhance my academic career, but I’ve also had a great time socializing with people from all over the world and being active in professional organizations such as P-NUT. In order to gain and/or improve the knowledge and skills needed to start a Master’s programme, it is often necessary to follow an additional pre-Master’s programme which you have to pass in order to gain admission to the Master’s programme. Pre-Master’s programmes range from 30 to 60 ECTS credits. Admission to a Master’s or pre-Master’s programme largely depends on your previous academic results and study programme. There are two routes for HBO students, depending on where you have studied:• Students who studied at Saxion

can begin the transfer during their HBO studies

• All other HBO students begin the transfer after completing their HBO studies.

during your hbo programme (only for saxion sTudenTs)Saxion University of Applied Sciences and the University of Twente cooperate in many different fields, in particular in offering solid opportunities for transfer. Saxion students have the opportunity to take a minor that consists of University of Twente pre-Master’s courses, worth 30 credits. This is known as a transfer minor (doorstroomminor in Dutch).

The minor will still count as part of the Saxion curriculum, but will also serve as a building block towards your transfer to a Master’s programme at the University of Twente. In some cases, the minor grants direct admission to the Master’s but in others, you will have to take additional courses.

You can use this transfer option if you meet the following requirements: • 60 credits from first year• 75 credits from second and third

When I finished my Bachelor’s in Applied Physics at Saxion University of Applied Sciences Enschede in 2009, I had not yet decided where my career ambitions lay. I thought there was still scope to develop my scientific skills, so I signed up for the Master’s in Applied Physics at the University of Twente. I knew this would improve my chances of getting a good job once I had figured out what I wanted to do.

When you transfer to the University of Twente from a University of Applied Sciences, you start by taking a pre-Master’s programme to prepare yourself for the Master’s. This involves taking some of the courses from the Bachelor’s programme, such as Optical Science, Solid State Physics and Physics of Fluids. You also work on your mathematical skills in courses that are designed for students coming from higher professional education.

During my pre-Master’s, I found a part-time job at SolMateS, a spin-off from the university’s MESA+ Institute. It made me realize that semiconductors is the field I’d like to work in. I chose the MSc specialization in Material Science, and once I had finished I found a job

as a field process engineer. Personally, I think I made the right decision by continuing my studies at the University of Twente. Some of the courses can be challenging, but they bring out the best in you. When you finish your Master’s, you can apply for a PhD position or try to find a job, like I did.

Since Dutch universities do not receive government funding for non-EU students, they set different rates forstudents from outside the EU/EEA.

scholarshipsThe University of Twente offers scholarships to excellent students enrolling in graduate programmes. These scholarships vary from government grants to funding by organizations or private persons. In addition, faculties and the University of Twente Scholarship Foundation offer a limited number of scholarships to excellent students.

Most scholarships require you to complete your application procedures before applying for the scholarship. Because of strict deadlines, make sure you apply for admission at least two months before the scholarship deadline. Applying for a scholarship is possible as soon as you have received a letter confirming at least provisional admission. Please read

(*) Insurance costs for students from the EEA will depend on the policies of insurance companies in their home country. EEA students can opt for additional insurance of €10-€25 per month. Work and sTudyAs an international student in the Netherlands, you may want to take a part-time job. Besides helping to cover your expenses, a job can help you participate in Dutch society, help you learn the language and give you work experience. However, your position as a job applicant differs from that of Dutch students. Some jobs require you to be fluent in Dutch, so until you have mastered Dutch, your options will be limited. Keep in mind that you may need a work permit in order to hold a part-time job, and that you will need full medical insurance. Once you have been admitted to a Master’s or pre-Master’s programme, you will receive an Entrance

Acceptance Form (EAF). As soon as you return this form, several of our services will start to work to help

ensure that you have a smooth arrival and stay at the University of Twente.

enTry visa and residence permiTThe International Office assists all students requiring applications or extensions for (entry) visas, residence permits and or Change of Purposes. If you require an entry visa or residence permit you will be contacted by email after admission outlining all necessary procedures. Keep in mind that by Dutch law students cannot apply for a visa themselves.

housingInternational students are assisted in finding furnished accommodation by the International Office. By coordinating supply and demand, International Office manages some 300 rooms on campus and 100 rooms off campus. All rooms are private; bathroom and kitchen facilities are often shared with other students. Rent prices for furnished housing vary from €300 to €450 per month (on campus; shared facilities) and €320 to €750 per month (off campus; private facilities). Electricity, water, gas, and internet connection are included in the rent prices. International Office always takes your personal preferences and needs into account when offering accommodation. However, please keep in mind it may not always be possible to grant your first choice of accommodation due to limited availability. For information about arranging unfurnished accommodation:

insuranceWhen studying in the Netherlands international students are required by law to have a health and liability insurance. The UT can help you arrange a complete insurance package covering most health and liability costs with a Dutch insurance company. Non-EU MSc students will be guided by the International Office in arranging health and liability insurance before arrival. If you are insured under the national health insurance scheme of an EU /EEA member state or Switzerland, your insurance company can provide you with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). All other international students can visit the International Office to arrange their insurance.

kick-in inTroducTion daysThe UT organizes an introduction period for new (international) students before the start of every Fall and Spring semester called Kick-In. During these days you will meet your fellow students and get to know Enschede and the UT campus. We will also help you arrange formalities like formal university registration and first steps towards registration at the municipality of Enschede.

If you have been accepted by the UT you will be personally invited for the introduction days for international students. For more information please visit the Kick-In website. Please note that your attendance to the introduction days is mandatory. Not attending the introduction days will delay the completion of

formalities needed to properly start your studies.

supporT sTrucTureTo make you feel at home and help you adjust to the Dutch culture the UT and your fellow students organized a support structure. Besides the fact it is exciting and fun to go study abroad, sometimes you might find yourself in situations you can use support with. In these situations you can get support from the student counseling service (SCS). They support you in for instance managing your expectations, dealing with feelings of loneliness and study delays resulting from adapting to life here in the Netherlands. The issue you are dealing with can be anything, you are always welcome to ask for support.

learning duTchEven though the Dutch are known for having sufficient conversational English skills, you will find it useful (and perhaps fun) to learn some Dutch yourself. The UT’s Language Coordination Center (TCP) offers Dutch Language course for international students. Learning to speak Dutch can also improve your interaction with Dutch students and improve your interaction in class.our interaction in class.
