Portfolio overview
SIMATIC FS100 switching strips
Pinch points are a danger on many machines and other technical installations. In these situations, the simplest protection is implemented with rubber switching strips that on the one hand halt the dangerous motion in a fail-safe state and on the other hand act as a buffer to prevent injury. The edge of the rubber strip (signal transmitter) is monitored optically by means of a fail-safe sending/receiving sensor that is inserted into the strip from the outside. This means that any length can be used, cut to length as required by the customer.
SIMATIC FS200 light barriers
When space is at a premium, contact-free light barriers are the ideal solution for access protection to danger zones, danger points, or entry points. Designed with IP65/IP69K degree of protection, in type 2 they have a range of up to 40 m according to IEC/EN 61496. The light barriers of type 4 according to IEC/EN 61496 with up to 60 m range feature frequency-modulated IR and integrated accumulated dirt monitoring. Additional evaluation units support start/restart inhibiting or contactor control.
SIMATIC FS400 light curtains, light grids and transceivers
The electro-sensitive and active optoelectronic light curtains and grids for SIL 2 and 3 ac-cording to IEC 61508, PL d and e according to ISO 13849-1, or types 2 and 4 according to IEC/EN 61496 protect operating personnel working on or near running machines and systems. Thanks to specially developed integrated circuits (ASICs) and a patented, intel-ligent evaluation technique, they are extremely fault-tolerant and highly available. A wide range of different functions, including start/restart inhibiting, contactor control, muting, cycle control and blanking, support a wide range of different applications such as finger and hand protection, horizontal danger zone protection, or access protec-tion for large areas. Versions for communication with ASIsafe and PROFIsafe are avail-able.
SIMATIC FS600 laser scanners
Laser scanners are optical distance sensors for the flexible protection of danger zones when used horizontally, or for providing access protection and motion monitoring when used vertically. They offer perfect all-round protection up to cate-gory 3 according to EN 954-1, SIL 2 according to IEC 61508, and PL d accordingto ISO 13849-1. With an operating angle of 190° and over a distance of up to 6.25 m, the laser scanner reliably detects any persons and objects. With up to eight programmable protective field pairs that can be selected during operation, our laser scanners can be optimally adapted to any application – on machines, production robots, conveyor systems, or vehicles.

Overview of safety categories and standards
Machine manufacturers and operators are required by law to ensure the safety of people and the environment. As your partner, we offer support not only with the relevant
safety-oriented products and systems, but always with up-to-date knowledge of international standards and regulations.
The EN ISO 13849-1 standard
EN ISO 13849-1 "Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems - Part 1: General principles for design" is based on the familiar categories in EN 954-1:1996.
It considers the complete safety functions with all devices in-volved in their implementation. With EN ISO 13849-1, safety functions are also investigated from a quantitative perspective going beyond the qualitative basis of EN 954-1. Performance levels (PL) are used, for this purpose, based on the various cat-egories. It may be applied to safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS) and all types of machines, regardless of the technology and energy used - electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, etc.
The EN 62061 standard
The standard EN 62061 "Safety of machinery – Functional safety of electrical, electronic and programmable machine control systems" considers for the first time the total safety chain, from sensor to actuator.
In order to reach a safety integrity level such as SIL 3, it is no longer enough that the individual components have the rele-vant certification. Instead, the entire safety function must be matched to the defined requirements. Demands on the per-formance of non-electrical safety-related control elements for machines – such as hydraulic, pneumatic, or electro-mechan-ical elements – are not defined in the standard.
You can find more information on the relevant safety standards here:www.siemens.com/safety-integrated

SIMATIC FS100 switching strips 7
SIMATIC FS100 switching stripsfor reliable and flexible protection from pinch points
Pinch points and cutting edges represent a safety risk on many machines and technical equipment. In these situa-tions, the simplest protection is implemented with rubber switching strips that on the one hand halt the dangerous motion in a fail-safe state and on the other hand act as a buffer to prevent injury.
The switching strips are characterized by simple configura-tion, high performance, and easy installation. For rapid on-site installation, the switching strips are simply cut and mounted without glue.
Together with the evaluation unit, they form a safety system approved according to IEC/EN 614961) up to type 4.
Function principle
The rubber strip (signal transmitter) is monitored optically by means of a fail-safe sending/receiving sensor that is inserted into the strip from the outside. This means that any length can be used, cut to length as required by the customer (max. 10 m).
The IR light beam passes through the strip. If it is altered orinterrupted, this will cause shutdown. Due to the reflective inner surface, the rubber profile can be bent to a certain extent. Shutdown can be actuated from above or from the side.
The evaluation units in the 22.5 mm enclosure are suitable for fail-safe monitoring in control circuits up to type 4 according to IEC/EN 614961). Two relay safety outputs and an HL signal-ing contact are available. The unit can be operated with auto-matic or manual restart.

SIMATIC FS400 light curtains, light grids and transceivers 13
Functionality – Standard and sequence control
Contactor control
The contactor control monitors the contactors, relays, or valves connected downstream of the light curtain. Contact blocks with positive action contacts are required.
Start/restart inhibit
To prevent the system from immediately restarting when the protective zone is clear following a trigger, the start/reset in-hibitor can be activated. The use of the start/reset inhibitor is required for access protection, because only the entry to the danger zone is monitored but not the area between the pro-tective zone and the dangerous motion.
Sequence control
If it is necessary to enter the light curtain's protective field once or twice (e.g. to place or remove workpieces), the se-quence control function should be selected. This functionality is primarily required in presses.
Increased resistance to strong extraneous light (Multi-Scan)
If strong interference is expected due to extraneous light in harsh environments, for example due to welding robots or strobe lamps, when the beam is interrupted it is often simpler to first wait to see if the disruption continues before the out-puts are switched off.
The availability of the system is thus increased, but the re-sponse time and thus the safety clearance are also increased.
SafetyLab diagnostics and parameterization software
Alternatively, with the optional SafetyLab diagnostics and pa-rameterization software, the functions of the light curtains, light grids, and transceivers can easily be set for type 4 in ac-cordance with IEC/EN 61496 using the PC. SafetyLab can be used for devices of the function packages blanking, muting and sequence control.
■ SafetyLab automatically recognizes the function package and displays only the settings available to it
■ Definition of 1-channel and 2-channel contact safety circuits
■ Different status signals can be assigned to status signal outputs
■ Modification of the display content of the 2x7-segment display
■ Linking of beam areas with internal signals, etc.

SIMATIC FS400 light curtains, light grids and transceivers14
SIMATIC FS400 light curtainsFunctionality – blanking
If there are objects permanently in the area of the light curtain, these may be hidden using the blanking functions so that trouble-free operation is ensured. A distinction is made between objects in a fixed location which are per-manently located in the protective zone, and moving objects which can temporarily leave the protective zone.
Configuration is implemented by means of the teach-in function, the DIP switch, the safety keys, or the SafetyLab diagnostics and parameterization software.
Fixed blanking
If an object is permanently located in the light path, the corresponding zone can be suppressed. This is achieved by suppressing the required number of beams.
The object must be permanently located in the area of the hidden beams. If this is not the case, the light curtain switches the system off, because otherwise safety can no longer can be ensured.
.
Floating blanking
If moving objects are located in the light path, any number of beams can be suppressed. The objects can move within the suppressed beams without the light curtain switching off.
If the moving objects are removed from the zone, the light curtain will interrupt the hazardous movement, otherwise safety can no longer be guaranteed.
Reduced resolution
If an object is located in the light path, two or three beams can be suppressed. The difference between reduced resolution and floating blanking is that continuous monitoring does not take place.
The "reduced resolution" function changes the effective resolution of the light curtain. The safety clearance must be recalculated for the new resolution.

SIMATIC FS400 light curtains, light grids and transceivers 15
SIMATIC FS400 light curtains, light grids and transceiversFunctionality – muting
When arranged vertically, light curtains, light grids and transceivers are often used for protecting access points. With additional sensor signals, the protective function can be suppressed to allow material to be transported in or out of danger zones, for example. The protective field is temporarily suppressed and, once the goods have passed through, reactivated.
Muting restart
If the power fails while goods are passing the muting sensors, for example, the valid muting sequence is interrupted. When the power supply has been restored, muting is not automati-cally resumed because the muting sequence is not as expect-ed. To remove the goods from the area covered by the muting sensors, an integrated retraction mode can be activat-ed using the start key.
4-sensor sequential muting
If the material that is to be transported into the danger zone always has the same dimensions and there is no lack of space, sequential muting is preferred. With sequential muting, four muting sensors are connected. These must be activated in a predefined sequence to trigger muting. All four sensors must be activated simultaneously for a short time.
2-sensor parallel muting
Parallel muting is ideal in plants in which the dimensions of the transported goods are not constant or space requirements must be kept to a minimum. This procedure is also used when transport it to take place in both directions. In addition, two muting sensors are arranged such that their beams cross behind the protective field in the danger zone.
3-sensor direction muting
3-sensor direction muting is configured in a similar way to 2-sensor parallel muting. Material can only be transported through the light curtain in one direction. To trigger the muting function, muting sensor M1 must first be activated, followed by muting sensors M2 and M3. If the paths for muting sensors M2 and M3 are interrupted, sensor M1 does not need to be activated.
4-sensor parallel muting
If the transported material is too small to be simultaneously recognized by 4 sequentially arranged sensors, and the applica-tion offers no space to create the light barriers cross for 2-sensor parallel muting, 4-sensor parallel muting, e.g. using light scanners, is a possibility. The function of 4-sensor parallel muting corresponds to that of 2-sensor parallel muting. However, the activation signal is obtained from two sensor pairs.

SIMATIC FS600 laser scanners 19
SIMATIC FS600 laser scannersAn all-round view for safety
The SIMATIC FS600 laser scanners work over an angle of 190° and at a distance of up to 6.25 m. In this area, the laser scanner reliably detects any persons and objects. It works like this: The distance sensor emits light pulses at reg-ular intervals. If they hit an obstruction, the sensor receives the reflected light and evaluates it. If this is evaluated as the predefined area to be protected, a stop function is triggered.
With up to 8 programmable protective field pairs that can be selected during operation, our laser scanners can be optimally adapted to any application – on machines, production robots, conveyor systems, or vehicles.
Different versions support optimal integration in the automa-tion system: Conventionally in the safety circuit, overPROFIBUS with PROFIsafe, or over AS-Interface with ASIsafe.
Standard applications
• Vertical as well as horizontal danger zone protection with multiple protective fields
• Safeguarding of hazard points (hand and arm protection)• Traverse path monitoring for automated guided vehicle

SIMATIC FS600 laser scanners20
Laser scanner for small protection zones and motion monitoring
Application in small protection zones
The SIMATIC FS660 SR (Short Range) laser scanner has been designed for safety engineering applications in small protec-tion zones of up to 2.15 m. Based on the functionality of the FS660I devices with horizontal and vertical protection, the la-ser scanner also impresses customers with its attractive price.
Applications:
• Automated guided vehicle systems with low speeds and short braking distances (usually 1.5 to 2 m)
• Stationary use for access protection at low entrances, e.g. at robot cells, or for area protection on punches or presses
Motion monitoring for material handling equipment with linear traverse path
The SIMATIC FS670 laser scanners for motion monitoring have been specially designed for applications material handling equipment with linear traverse path. In addition to the stan-dard safety functions for operator protection, it reliably calcu-lates distances for positioning as well as velocities. It monitors up to 6 different velocities and will automatically correct the selected protective field if necessary. No additional incremental encoders are required due to the integrated ve-locity calculation - the safety laser scanner and the standard PLC together execute all the functions of velocity-dependent monitoring of the protective field.
Benefits at a glanceSIMATIC FS670
■ Distance measurement for positioning
■ Eight programmable and switchable protective zones with different ranges of 2.15, 4, and 6.25 m
■ Resolution adjustable from 30 to 150 mm
■ Velocity measurement for the selected protective field and, if necessary, correction, warning, as well as monitoring of the maximum velocity
■ Automatic calculation of the protective fields for motion monitoring with LS4Soft software
■ Maximum reliability even in case of temporary disturbances in the measuring zone
■ Up to 6 different velocities can be monitored
■ Orientation requires just a fixed reference value(e.g. a wall)
