Congress Theme

“Integration of Technologies: Emerging Engineering Paradigm”

The philosophy of 'technology integration' revolves around the iterative approach of

evolving a new technology resulting out of the synergy of the knowledge domain of

various engineering disciplines. The resulting technology is expected to be superior

and efficient to the original technology and expected to work reliably and coherently.

Technology integration has always been important and has been a critical parameter in

achieving engineering excellence especially over the last decade. Advances in

chemistry, information technology, electronics, and materials sciences has

transformed technological base of many industries as well as products rapidly and

unpredictably. At the same time, the choice of integrated technology have also

widened. To add to the complexity, product life cycles have shortened dramatically,

forcing companies to develop and commercialize new technologies faster than ever. At

the same time, many companies have also to contend with a large array of standards

and manufacturing processes. The competitive game has changed: the advantage

now often goes to the companies that are most adept at choosing among the vast

number of technological options available and not necessarily to the companies that

History of Indian Engineering Congress

The Institution of Engineers (India), earlier held Annual Conventions at different places in the country to take stock and review its activities and objectives. The Annual Convention later manifested into Indian Engineering Congress in 1987 to provide a wider spectrum. The Institution of Engineers (India) organizes the Indian Engineering Congress every year to cater to the needs of entire engineering professional community of India and provide them exposure t o t h e s c i e n t i f i c a n d t e c h n o l o g i c a l advancements in the country. The program also invites foreign participants thereby ushering the entire engineering community to the advances made all over the globe.

The First Indian Engineering Congress was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India, Bharat Ratna Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi in 1987 at Kolkata. Thereafter, the event was inaugurated by President of India, Late Shri S D Sharma in 1994 at Kolkata and in 1995 at Jaipur. It may be mentioned that Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Hon'ble President of India Bharat Ratna Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam inaugurated and addressed the International Technical Congress organized by the Institution in 2000 at Kolkata and in 2003 at Delhi, respectively. It is a matter of great honour that Shri Pranab Mukherjee, the then Hon'ble President of India inaugurated the 27th and 28th Indian Engineering Congress held at New Delhi and Chennai, respectively. Shri Ram Nath Kovind, Hon'ble President of India, graced the Valedictory Function of the 32nd Indian Engineering Congress held at Chennai in 2017.

create them. Selecting the most appropriate technology among large number of competing ones and their integration is critical to

competitive performance. Also the approach adopted must be in harmony with a company's capabilities and its operating environment.

Technology integration has brought in a paradigm shift in our approach to engineering. Instead of emulating the developed world, we need to

focus on incremental improvements or refinements of technologies with which we are already familiar. Further, integrating technologies is

not enough. We need to ensure that the technology integration should be capable of working harmoniously in an increasingly complex

production system. However, most of these complex production environments share common challenges: a novel base of technology and a

complex context in which that technology must be applied. That combination of novelty and complexity makes a company's expertise in

technology integration critical.

It has now become imperative for all concerned to involve multiple technologies in product and process enhancement. This has led to

unprecedented developments in contributing fields, such as Big Data, machine learning, computing power, storage capacity and cloud

computing, among others. AI-based technologies are already emerging as a key component of proactive tools and applications being used

to help people lead better lives by improving healthcare, education, finance, agriculture, transportation, and a wide range of other sectors.

However, merging of the evolving technologies is to be done in an un-obstructive and seamless manner. Therefore, engineers have to

necessarily apply themselves in an environment which calls for application and integration of multiple technologies in product development

therein, innovation and vision are of essence. Integration of technologies poses multiple challenges and requires a developer to be aware of

the nuances of each technology application. It is increasingly evident that engineers are entering into a challenging phase where a broad

perspective, innovative spirit and domain specific knowledge is the need of the hour.
