SAISON 2009–2010
THE 2009–2010 SEASON’S SECRET GARDENSI love all the seasons. I love autumn, winter, and spring more than summer. Why? Becauseat TfT we play between the months of October and May. From one show to the next, wechange from a garden in full bloom to a garden of frost, then back to one in bloom. Andwe share the secrets of acting, those of the heart and mind, even the most shamefulsecrets. When you really think about it, a theatrical season is like finding the door to asecret garden. And this is what’s happening in 2009–2010. Each of the eight pieces isa garden with a secret to reveal.
Eight good reasons for you to subscribe!

TWO ONE-ACT PIECES in the same evening. A new work particularly close to ourheart that celebrates the diversity of the French-speaking world.
Les noirs sont heureux is a boisterous settling of scores between a married couple.
Inspired by a piece by Courteline, Martin-David Peters updates a classical comedy
of the French theatre, putting it in a Toronto context…making us laugh at ourselves.
With Rendez-vous Lakay, the talented Djennie Laguerre transports us to Haiti on a
voyage that blends humour, oral tradition, and Haitian dance. The script inter-
mingles French and Creole, and displays the linguistic and poetic richness of
the combined languages.

THE WORST PATIENTS ARE THOSE WHO DON’T WANT TO BE CURED. A group of young
actors on tour perform an anthology of finely woven scenes from three pieces
written by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, a.k.a. Molière: Le Médecin volant (The Flying
Doctor) (1645), L’Amour médecin (The Doctor of Love) (1665), and Le Médecin
malgré lui (A Doctor in Spite of Himself) (1666). There is some question, of course,
of feigned illness and disguised or impostor doctors. Above all, for Molière, there
is some question about letting the laws of nature and desire, the rights of men
and women who prefer pleasure, triumph over the austere lessons of all these
solemn doctors or spiritual advisers. The question we must ask ourselves is this:
are we going to die because of four doctors and two pharmacists, as Lisette says,
or are we going to die of laughter?

(SPITTING SLAG)
JEAN MARC DALPÉ IS A BORN STORYTELLER. He has translated this piece and he
plays its only character: a wheelchair-bound, heroin-addicted miner in his forties.
We listen to the admission of a man who is trying to rectify a mistake. “I am
inside a rock where no living being has ever been.” We witness the tragedy of one
who is being ravaged by what he has always wanted to fight. The frank and intense
voice of a worker survives intact, a voice where courage shines like a beacon, of
someone who makes his way from hatred to love.

FRAGMENTS DE MENSONGESINUTILES
MICHEL TREMBLAY
(FRAGMENTS OF UNNECESSARY LIES)
IN HIS BRAND NEW PIECE, Fragments of Unnecessary Lies, Tremblay once againdemonstrates his genius. He juxtaposes two eras, with his two protagonists
mingling in parallel worlds – one in 1957 and the other in 2007. Two eras, two
teens, Jean-Marc and Manu, living what they find to be an unbelievable experience.
Both of them think they are the only one in their group like themselves, “and
suddenly you were there to save me.” Tremblay paints a portrait of two boys who
differ from society’s expectations, “little 15-year-old smart-alecks”. Nothing is
taboo in the life and speech of these two boys. In turn, we witness their various
romantic, dramatic, and enigmatic encounters and exchanges. Is “to love” a verb
that conjugates in the imperative or the imperious?

(THE GREAT VOYAGE OF THE LITTLE ROCK)
THIS PIECE FOR CHILDREN tells the story of a little rock from Brittany who can’t
manage to identify with those of his clan; with their quiet life spent looking at
the sea, miserably unhappy. Little Rock has heard tell of Percé Rock, which triggers
in him an irresistible desire to change, to travel…but how does a rock leave?
Who could even lend him a hand? Enter on the scene a sandal and hat, saved from
drowning. Touched by Little Rock’s distress, the two survivors agree to become
his envoys and leave to find Percé Rock, far, far away, on the other side of the
sea, in Gaspésie, Canada. Imagine the adventures in store for us on this voyage!

RAGE
THE ACTION OF THIS AWARD-WINNING PIECE by Vancouver playwright Michele Riml
takes place in a high school. Raymond, a.k.a. Rage, is reprimanded following
his oral presentation in history class, where he puts forward a bold viewpoint on
Hitler. Raymond must meet with the guidance counsellor. The discussion is at
first inoffensive, and then turns into an ideological confrontation on right and
wrong, on the notion of truth and lies. We watch it escalate from a forceful
exchange to death threats. What could have brought the two protagonists to such
a deadlock? Does the blame rest with the teen’s parents or the school system?
And to what point must we take to task a society that prefers apathy to violence?
Rage defies us to confront the foundation of what constitutes radicalism
and pacifism.
