FROM THE RECTORThe Silesian University of Technology has a history of 63 years. It hasbecome an important public culture and opinion-forming institution, deeply rooted in the city of Gliwice and Upper Silesia region. Its spe-cial function is an outcome of the fact that for many successive yearsour University served as a specific “knowledge deposit”, thanks to thecreative work of its professors and other staff. We successfully utilizeour human resources in research and education processes and makethe results available for the public benefit and market advantage. The Silesian University of Technology is the biggest technical univer-sity in our region and one of the biggest in Poland, currently educat-ing about 30 000 students on 12 Faculties in 48 engineering disci-plines. We provide graduates of engineering who are ready to work asmanagers of Silesian industry and of enterprises far beyond ourregion. As an organization with a big research and teaching potentialwe exert a stimulating impact on the growth of Silesia and Zagłębieand significantly contribute to the creation of the economy based onknowledge management.I have been involved in the Silesian University of Technology for manyyears and am fully aware of not only its renown and value but also, atthe same time, of the challenges that we are facing. Nowadays it isonly the knowledge of citizens obtained in the process of educationthat empowers them and endows them with the capability of meetingthe requirements of our modern world. The development of the economy and society drawn on knowledgemust be based on a properly organized, modern system of educationand training, within the framework of which innovation can flourish. The conditions for the growth of entrepreneurship and commercial-ization of research and development works have already been creat-ed and will be continuously improved at our University. Thus, I sin-cerely believe that our University, due to the commitment of its acad-emic environment, has become an innovative research and educa-tional institution that will soon play an important role in the EuropeanHigher Education Area.

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Silesian University of Technology is one of thebiggest technical universities in Poland. Its rich, over 60-year-old, tradition makes it the oldest inUpper Silesia and one of the oldest in the country.

The University was founded on May 24, 1945 andGliwice was chosen for its seat despite initial plansto locate it in Katowice. What made the city standout from other places in Upper Silesia was thespace potential it offered. Here, empty buildings, grouped in a small area, could be converted andused for didactic and administrative purposes as

well as turned into halls of residence for studentsand teachers. The concept went along with a farreaching vision to establish an academic district.Another strength of Gliwice were research workersand students of the former Technical University inLvov who were resettled here after World War II.

7

The foundation of the Silesian University ofTechnology fulfilled the idea which had been pre-sent in the consciousness of the Silesian communi-ty for a long time. Since research development anddidactic activities were essential to support thishighly industrialized and having great prospectsarea, the first actions to set up a technical universi-ty in this region were taken as early as in the late1920s.

The inauguration ceremony of the first academicyear was held in Gliwice on October 29, 1945.At the time the University had a student populationof 2750. It used educational curricula taken fromthe Technical University in Lvov at four faculties:Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil En-gineering and employed nearly 200 academics. The outstanding teaching staff, made up mainly ofprofessors of the former Technical University inLvov, were one of the strongest assets of theUniversity since its foundation.

LOCAT ION

The Silesian University of Technology was foundedas the scientific and didactic base for the mostindustrialized region in Poland and one of the mostindustrialized areas in Europe: Upper Silesia. The Silesian province lies in the south of Poland. It borders with the Czech Republic and Slovakia; itcovers 12,000 square kilometers. There are 68 townsand cities in Silesia, 22 of which fulfill big city func-tions (universities, institutes and research centers). The population is nearly 4.9 million (the record den-sity per square kilometer – over 398 people). Everyfifth working Pole is employed in Silesia. TheSilesians are famous for their traditional culture ofwork which guarantees high qualification of work-ers and their solidity. As far as communication infrastructure, accessibili-ty of transport and industrial base are concerned,Upper Silesia takes the first place in the country.Until recently, Silesia was mainly associated withheavy industry, which is undergoing a deep restruc-turing process at the moment. Other trades, partic-ularly the automotive industry, are developingrapidly.

Nine faculties of the Silesian University ofTechnology are located in Gliwice – the main seat ofthe University, and the remaining three in Katowiceand Zabrze. Besides, lectures are held in Rybnik,Bytom, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Tychy and Sosnowiec, covering the whole area of Upper Silesia.

WHY C H O S E THE SILESIANUNIVERISTY OF TECHNOLOGY?Because facts speak in our favour. Engineering cours-es offered by the Silesian University of Technologyprovide excellent preparation for professional engi-neers, which is certified by high positions in indepen-dent rankings. The studies at our University posegood opportunities for the pursuit of students’ individ-ual interests, including international academic envi-ronments thanks to exchange programmes run withmany European partners. Furthermore, the coursesprovide solid grounds for future professional achieve-ments. The underlying principle of our training is cre-ative thinking, independent problem solving, accom-panied by a well grounded knowledge that guaranteeattractive employment. More importantly, thanks tothe knowledge and skills obtained at our Universityour graduates feel comfortable with the concept ofprofessional mobility, which is nowadays an opportu-nity and not a threat to future career development.

The Silesian University of Technology is one of thebest in Poland in terms of sport achievements – thewinner of the XXIII edition of The AcademicChampionships of Polish Higher education Schools, thanks to about 20 sport sections, including: aero-bics, badminton, judo, karate, jogging club, mountain

biking club, male and female basketball, alpine ski-ing, handball, football, swimming, chess, male andfemale volleyball, modern dance, table tennis, tennis, and triathlon. There is also a car racing section, andother unusual disciplines such as curling and anglingare pretty common at our University.

The Silesian University of Technology is also anactive player in the field of innovation and advance-ment of new technologies, which are essential in theknowledge-based economy. New ideas and solu-tions conceived at our University and then trans-ferred to industry contribute to the improvement ofthe competitive edge of Polish enterprises.
