Welcome to ISG!
School Year 2012-2013
International education in English
International School Ghent is a brand new school in the city of Ghent, founded on the 30th of
November 2011. It is the first international primary school with English as an official language in East
and West Flanders. We provide international education in English mostly for children of expatriates,
foreign employees in Belgium and Belgians who have an interest in providing international education
to their children.
ISG opened its doors on 3 September 2012 when the first pupils started attending our school. ISG
welcomes children between 3 and 12 years old:
Pre-primary education: 3 – 5 year olds
Primary education: 6 – 12 year olds
In the years to come, a secondary school program will be added.
Quality Education The International School Ghent strives to provide all children with the quality education and individualised attention they need. Quality - in all its dimensions - is at the core of ISG’s educational program. Programs and practices have been combined with our own modules and integrated into a unique design. ISG’s Board of Directors is supported by an Advisory Board. This committee consists of high level experts and experienced educational practitioners. They monitor ISG's educational achievements and provide advice concerning the curriculum, selection of teaching staff, educational innovation, and all other areas that affect the quality of education and learning at the school. ISG currently offers pre-primary education and grades one through six. In the years to come, a secondary program will be added. In the meantime, there is a possibility to continue with secondary education in other international or Flemish schools. Our maximum class size is 15 pupils. An innovative feature of ISG is our close cooperation with a dynamic local partner school, De Kleine Icarus. Both schools share facilities, services and cooperate in educational projects and extra-curricular activities. This unique co-operation model provides considerable added educational value and will also encourage the integration of expatriate children and their parents into the local community.
Curriculum
At International School Ghent, we have chosen the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to
provide our pupils with quality education. This curriculum is internationally recognized, taught in more
than 1000 schools around the world and provides a skills-based approach to learning.
IPC allows our new pupils to quickly integrate into our school from any other education program and
vice versa. All our classes are taught in English. Our teachers are experienced and qualified in
teaching English as an Additional language and are able to support children with little or no
knowledge of English.
Our pupils work in mixed age groups and activities are designed to develop academic skills, as well
as personal and social skills. Special attention is given to proficiency in English and Mathematics. The
Cambridge Primary goals are being used as a guideline to develop a personalized learning package
for each child. Thematic teaching across subjects allows children to improve their critical-thinking
skills, motivation and overall engagement.
ISG offers a broad curriculum which includes regular Physical Education lessons, swimming classes
and music lessons. French is taught from Year 5. Children have a possibility to attend a range of
after-school clubs such as Dutch, Yoga, Plastic arts and Mandarin Chinese.
The classrooms are equipped with Information Technology and audio-visual resources. These include
iPads, laptops and a digital school board. Children use such equipment on a regular basis to develop
their IT skills and enhance learning.
