This will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams and will feature a doubleheader on Sunday in order to make up a postponement on May 27 th . The LumberKings have won both of the series. The two teams have been playing since 1962 with Burlington leading the head-to-head meetings 418 games to 431. LumberKings Starter: Chris Vallimont, 22, makes his 12 th appearance and start of the year with the Clinton LumberKings. The Erie Pennsylvania native, was given the loss his last time out for his roughest start of the season. He lasted just 1.2 innings against the Kane County Cougars and allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits while walking three and striking out zero. This will be his second outing of the year against the Burlington Bees. Vallimont faced Burlington in Clinton and logged six innings allowing just one unearned run on one hit while walking one and striking out nine. The LumberKings Opening Day Starter has been one of the strongest pitchers in the Midwest League. He won Pitcher of the Week honors for May 20 th through 27 th for a dominate stretch in which he allowed only one hit over 13 innings. The honor helped to propel him to the Midwest League All-Star Game as one of the LumberKings three all- stars. Bees Starter: Kyle Tyler, 22, makes his 11 th appearance and eighth start of the year for the Burlington Bees. The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native was given a no decision for six innings of work against the Quad Cities River Bandits. He allowed six runs during the start on seven hits while walking two and striking out five and threw a season high 86 pitches. This will be his third assignment against Clinton this year. Tyler, came out of the bullpen in his previous work against the LumberKings and has combined to allow three runs on eight innings with no walks and nine strikeouts. During his first outing against Clinton he allowed a home run to Thomas Jones. The Los Angeles Angels took Tyler in the 20 th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. Shutout Losses: Great pitching went to waste for the Clinton LumberKings in Thursday night’s loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The shutout was the first of the season to come in extra innings with the LumberKings falling 1-0 in 10-innings. The shutout loss was the fourth of the season for Clinton. LumberKing All-Stars: Prior to Wednesday’s game the Clinton LumberKings learned of three of their players being named to the 55 th annual Midwest League All-Star Game at Four Winds Field in South Bend Indiana. Jerar Encarnacion will be the only starter among those going as pitchers Chris Vallimont and Humberto Mejia will round out Clinton’s all-star representation. Last season the LumberKings had one starter, Jack Larsen, but he did not play due to a injury that has landed him on the Disabled List. He’s Still A Leader: Even with another strong six-inning outing from Humberto Mejia the LumberKings failed to offer any support and the Clinton starter was given a no decision. Still, Mejia is the only pitcher in the Midwest League to own a 1.000 winning percentage and he owns the lowest WHIP in the league with a 0.89. In addition, he is tied with teammate Chris Vallimont for second in the league in innings pitched with 61 innings worked. No More Power: For a stretch toward the latter part of May the LumberKings were leading the league in home runs but have since fallen off. The LumberKings failed to hit a home run over three games against the Kernels and have not hit just two home runs over the six game homestand that has just come to an end. Just the One: The LumberKings allowed three walks to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night in the series final. Clinton has been stingy as a pitching staff when it comes to free passes and the walks on Thursday night was the 181 st walk issued this season. The total is the second fewest in the Midwest League behind only the Fort Wayne TinCaps who have allowed 167 walks. This Date in Baseball History: On this date in 1957, Howard University awards honorary degrees of Doctor of Laws to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and recently retired Dodgers infielder Jackie Robinson.
