Letter from Canon Sue Oliver …

August is school holiday time, seaside time in the days before everyone went abroad if they could. It’s time off, a rest if we are fortunate, an adventure if we are young, and sunny days if we all are lucky.

We all need time off don’t we?

Time when the pace of life slows a little, or picks up if that is what it needs to do.

Time to spend with family and friends.

Time to have fun, play games, go for a walk, look out to sea and smell flowers

Time to read a magazine or book, listen to music…….

Or whatever it is you really want to do?

I once was part of a group exercise when the large group of over 100 had to get into

smaller groups. To do this you had to go to an allocated part of the room if your preferred holiday was in a tent or mountain refuge, a caravan, a rented cottage, a bed and breakfast, a smart hotel or a ship/cruise….. The idea was that you would be able to work best if you were with people who liked the same kinds of holidays. Do you think that was a good idea? It certainly broke the ice though!

Holidays should help us to think a little and give thanks, to count our blessings and make plans/ hazy ideas for the future. Saying thank you to God is one of the most important spiritual exercises. But it is one that is much less effort than going to the gym. Just look around at the beauty of flowers and birds, faces and natural things and say thank you God. Thank you for life and health, thank you for all that remains good even if life is tough, painful, hard. It’s as good a habit to get into as ….

going to the gym

exercising

eating well

All of which we can give thanks for this summertime

Prayers and Blessings

Sue

Letter from the Archdeacon of Worcester

View from the train

I am writing this travelling on a train back from the Kirchentag church convention in Germany. The Kirchentag meets every other year in a different city in Germany and has done so since 1949. It is an amazing Christian event, drawing in 100,000 people from all over Germany, Europe and around the world. Every day there are Bible studies, lectures and

discussions, surrounded by a whole host of organised and impromptu concerts and street theatre. There is a carnival atmosphere with much laughter and fun as people both young and old meet up, finding old friends and making new.

There is a serious side. The Kirchentag started as a lay movement, coming to terms with what happened during the Second World War. Since then it has always engaged with the issues affecting society and is all about how to live as Christians. The top politicians attend and you might even find a member of the government leading a Bible study.

I was involved in two particular acts of worship. The first was the Meissen Eucharist, celebrating the partnership between the Church of England and the German Protestant Church, which is expressed in the links we have with Magdeburg. The second was a service around the theme of Brexit, which concerns our German brothers and sisters as much as it does us. I preached a sermon in dialogue with a French pastor, in which we affirmed the bonds of affection between us, our unity in Christ trumping political differences.

So my train journey continues. We’ve just crossed the border from Germany into Belgium. There is no sign, but you see the difference in the look of the buildings and the different road signs. It occurs to me that the Belgians are not any the less Belgian because of the European Union, nor the Germans less German. They do not lose their national identity. And as I reflect on the experience of the Kirchentag, it is clear to me that our identity as Christians comes before everything else as well.

The Kirchentag reminded me once again that this identity is expressed above all in how we live out the love of God in the world, wherever we happen to be. We take the world seriously because God does - indeed He made it! In these troubled times, perhaps we need to be even more aware of that, courageous enough to speak truth to power, and hopeful enough to build up the bonds of affection between people and nations.

And now we’ve reached Brussels. It still amazes me that I’ll get on another train here that will take me right through to London. Thankfully it is not only bonds of affection that will keep us connected; we always will be part of Europe.

Archdeacon Robert Jones

If there is to be peace

If there is to be peace in the world,

there must be peace in the nations.

If there is to be peace in the nations,

there must be peace in the cities.

If there is to be peace in the cities,

there must be peace between neighbours.

If there is to be peace between neighbours,

there must be peace in the home.

If there is to be peace between neighbours,

there must be peace in the home.

If there is to be peace in the home,

there must be peace in the heart.

RECTORY GARDEN

PARTY

Thank you to those who supported the 'Gift Box' stand at Blakedown Rectory Garden Party, with 15% of ticket sales going to Macmillan Cancer Support! We raised £114 for Macmillan, through these gift sales, together with some generous donations, which is absolutely fantastic and marks my first event raising money for this worthy charity. Thank you to the Rectory for inviting me to attend the event who also had a very successful day raising money for the churches and local community. Should anyone require any gifts, please pop to Blakedown Post Office, where I have more delightful items on display, all with 15% of proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support. A certification and thank you letter from Macmillan will be displayed here shortly for all to see and be proud of. Thanks again Rachel.

Royal British Legion

Albert 'Bill' Pratt

Blakedown and Hagley Royal British Legion Branch are sorry to report that they have

recently lost one of their longest serving members- Bill Pratt at the good age of 88

years.

Bill was a Blakedown lad through and through. He had a younger brother Jeff, and

sister Irene, the family home was opposite the Recreation Room in Belbroughton Road,

Blakedown. all three attending Blakedown C of E school where Miss Lampitt, and later

Miss Attenborough, were their head teachers. Later Bill won a place at Kidderminster's

King Charles 1 Grammar School.

When National Service called on Bill, he spent a considerable time in Malay, coming

home on compassionate leave due to his Dad’s (Bill senior) Ill health. Unfortunately, his

Dad passed away a few hours before young Bill’s arrival.

When time came for Bill to leave the army his interests were transferred to The Royal

British Legion at the the Blakedown and Hagley Branch - started in Blakedown at The

Old House At Home in1929.

Bill moved through the officer's positions via Branch Standard Bearer to become The

Branch President.

Bill and his wife Joyce created their family home in Wheat Mill close Blakedown, this is

where they brought up their son and daughter, however both have now moved away

from Worcestershire .

Unfortunately, Bill lost his wife Joyce about 3 years ago and he eventually moved to join

his son’s family in the Sheffield area - where he peacefully passed away.

Whilst Bill’s funeral was conducted in Sheffield we’re proud to know that The

Frecheville Branch RBL, represented our Bĺakedown and Hagley Branch with a

Standard at his funeral.

Bill, it’s been a pleasure to have known you - a Blakedown lad who was a true

GIVING TO THE CHURCHES

There are a number of ways that donations can be made towards the work of the three churches in our parish. By placing your gift on the collection plate at any service. By putting your gift in the Free Will Offering boxes or using the Free Will envelopes which are at the rear of each church. By making a gift on the annual Church Gift Day. By coming to and enjoying one of the church fund-raising events. By gifting on line through give.net which is part of 'Stewardship' - a Christian Charity. give.net is easy to use....

Eg, go into www.give.net and click onto ‘Find a Charity’

Type “Blakedown and Churchill Churches, wait a moment for the church to pop up and then follow the simple instructions. NB it is quite common for this not to work first time, in which case please re-type and all should be revealed! For UK taxpayers, there is gift aid box to tick and Stewardship remits the tax reclaim to the church, thus easing the burden on the Acting Treasurer. The only income that your churches receive is from the generous gifts made by members of

the congregations and communities. From these gifts the general running costs of the

church buildings have to be met (there are always repairs needed to these beautiful old

buildings) and the stipend of your Priest, the Rectory running costs and all church mission

and outreach costs.

So, ALL contributions are very, very gratefully received.

Kitchen Corner

If the weather’s still hot, a kebab always goes down well at a BBQ, and this Korean chicken with sweet, spicy and sticky glaze is the latest. Scatter over spring onions to serve. Prep: 15 mins Cook: 20mins Serves: 6-8 Ingredients: 12 chicken thighs, boneless and skinless 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sesame oil Thumb-sized piece ginger, grated 4 spring onions, sliced For the glaze: 4 tbsp Korean chilli paste (or use a mixture of 3 tbsp ketchup and 1 tbsp sriracha chilli sauce 2 tbsp honey Juice ½ lime 1 tsp sesame oil 1 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp sesame seeds Toss the chicken in the soy sauce, sesame oil and ginger. Thread each thig on two long metal skewers, so that each skewer pierces one side of the thigh. Keep threading the chicken, making sure it’s packed onto the skewers tightly. Chill until you’re ready to cook. Mix the ingredients for the glaze. Heat the BBQ. Wait for coals to turn ashen before cooking. Cook the kebab for 5-8 mins on each side (depending on the heat). Once nicely charred, but not fully cooked through, start painting on the glaze. The honey will catch if cooked for too long – the key to nice sticky chicken is applying the glaze in layers, turning the kebab often. Once the glaze has been used up and the chicken is cooked through (it’ll take about 20mins in total), transfer to a plate and leave to cool for 5 mins before serving scattered with spring onions. © bbcgoodfood.com

BLAKEDOWN CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

School Christian Values Peace Forgiveness Trust Perseverance Respect

New term starts Tuesday September 3rd 2019

All dates are on the website http://www.blakedowncofeprimary.co.uk/

We are looking forward to welcoming all our children in September, especially those children in Reception starting their school career, while wishing all the best to our current Year 6 for their new start at secondary school.

Sports Day 2019 Sports Day 2019 was held on the morning of Thursday 20th June on the Sports Field behind school. Key Stage 1 got the day off to a good start with Key Stage 2 events starting slightly later. We only had to contend with a short shower of rain before activities continued. Parents and Carer’s were invited to either or both parts of Sports Day. The children came into school in their PE kits with their school uniform to change for the afternoon. The children took part in a range of sports activities including the sprint, egg & spoon race, skipping, obstacle, javelin and a whole school relay. The children took part with a competitive, but team spirit, trying their hardest and pushing themselves to carry on even if they were nervous or disappointed at not coming first. They demonstrated the school’s Christian values of Perseverance and Respect. Thank you to all the parents for supporting us, buying programmes, refreshments and coming to cheer everyone on – this is so important for the atmosphere and gives the children a sense that the occasion is a special and memorable one in their lives. Thank you to the staff for their organisation and for supporting the children during a busy and exciting time.

Youth Makes Music – Kidderminster Town Hall Well done….to the KS2 choir members who attended Youth Makes Music at the Kidderminster Town Hall. With professional sound engineers managing the whole event, raised on the stage and dais above the audience, in the imposing interior of the Town Hall they sang beautifully and made all the parents and staff very proud of them. Not only did they sing well, but their performance was energetic and showed their own enjoyment. Huge thanks to Mrs Marshall who has prepared the children for this performance and for parents in bringing them to the venue and supporting the children and the school.

Library Book Appeal

Please support our appeal for more money towards library books by visiting https://supportyourschool.org.uk/blakedown-ce-primary-school/revamp-our-school-library-appeal. This is another way to support school via the PTA, especially if you are not someone who is able to attend or support the school at other events.

Parent Questionnaires Thank you to all families who contributed to the annual school questionnaire. The results of these are now being analysed and will be fed back to parents before the end of term.

Thank You… …to our Year 3 children who presented a wonderful assembly earlier this term all about the Ancient Greeks. They spoke clearly and tried their very best with acting, speaking and singing, making us all very proud of them

Orienteering The three Year 5 Orienteering teams attended an Orienteering Festival at Wolverley High School along with many other primary schools from Kidderminster. One of our teams came first overall, the other teams came in 21st and 24th place. All tried their hardest and represented school very well.

Football Our Year 3/4 Football Team who played against St. Wulstan’s and Lickhill Primary Schools yesterday and won each of their matches. They played very well together, even though they had not played as a team before!

PTA The PTA are held a non-uniform day this term in return for bringing in a bottle donation. Donations on this day will go towards prizes for future events this term and are very much appreciated. PTA meetings are held in school, dates and details on the school website. All are welcome to attend.

Assessments Year 2 and Year 6 have now finished their SATs and Year 1 their Phonics check. Blakedown CE Primary School keep this very low key for the children, they are sat with their usual class teachers to ensure no undue additional stress is put upon the children at this young age. The results of these will be reported to parents with the normal school report system and the results form an additional piece of information for end of year assessments.

Recognition Awards Blakedown CE Primary School has a weekly recognition award, these are awarded in a school assembly. Some examples of the sort of awards that are made: For being an active school citizen, seeking out ways to help – raising money, collecting litter. For his fantastic manners and always thinking about others. For lovely manners and doing her best to be helpful. For trying hard and preserving when faced with a challenge. For being supportive role model for others and setting a high standard in her learning. For always being enthusiastic about all his learning. For always having a positive attitude in her music lessons.

For always going out of his way to be helpful and kind to others. For always being a hardworking and supportive member of the class.

News from the Governors Twice a year there are a series of ‘Learning Walks’ for Governors, usually in September and May/June to see progress and maintain the Governors relationship with the school, seeing it in action. These learning walks are guided by the Headteacher Mrs Beckford-Bond and usually focus on areas related to the School Development Plan. Walks such as these give an opportunity for the Headteacher to answer questions and show an aspect of development in the school environment, for instance a curriculum area in lessons, what resources are available etc. Governors can speak to children in the lessons and always feel most welcome by the whole school community. Governors also are assigned a responsibility for an area of school life, be it a subject or safeguarding, Health and Safety or facilities. For the area that a Governor has taken responsibility for they arrange meetings with the relevant staff to get involved and learn about their subject. For instance, the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) Governor has a termly update meeting with the coordinator. To look at relevant guides. To discuss ideas like hooking up with pyramid SEND to help with review and share guidance with other local schools. To discuss using Worcestershire County Council support and make the best use of the limited funding. To understand the monitoring that the staff co-ordinator is doing and what programmes that central government is recommending (for example the SEND Governance review) and how this impacts the school and the children’s progress.

Lego® for ‘Brick Club’ Thank you for all your support so far. Brick club is a popular feature at the school and provides an alternative on occasions for some children at playtime. We are still happy to receive any donations, please take your Lego® to the office at Blakedown CE School. Lego® contributions are always welcome.

Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB Blakedown CE Primary School is still collecting used postage stamps to raise money for the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) - we can raise up to £20 per kg! Please trim excess paper around the stamp leaving a 1cm border and drop the stamps in the collection box in the office reception area. All contributions welcome. Thank you.

Some months ago, when meetings were being held to discuss the question of War Memorials, it was unanimously decided that something should also be done by way of giving a welcome to the men on their return, and a Committee for that purpose was formed out of Churchill and Blakedown, with Mr HT Williams as Chairman and Mr AC Goodyear, who made an indefatigable secretary. At the first meeting, it was decided that the “Welcome Home” should take the form of a supper, to be followed by an entertainment, and Mr Williams very kindly placed the grounds of Churchill Court at the disposal of the Committee for this purpose……A very effective card of invitation showing the flags of Great Britain, France and Belgium was printed, and this was sent out to 129 men, and three ladies, who had served as nurses, namely, Miss Olga Wilson, her sister, Mrs Paul Cadbury and Miss E Williams. Extract from the Broadcast Magazine August 1919 (cont…): PEACE CELEBRATIONS – As we were all expecting that Peace would be celebrated the first week in August, it came as rather a surprise when we heard at the beginning of July that the 19th was to be the day. Committees were immediately formed in Churchill and Blakedown and got rapidly to work, and an excellent programme was drawn up at each place. The principal item for the Saturday afternoon at Churchill was a cricket match between the Scouts and the ladies and married men of the parish, while at the same time there were to be sports for the school children. This was to be followed by tea for the children at 4.30, service in the church at 6.30, meat tea for adults at 7, and further sports and fireworks in the evening. At Blakedown proceeding were to begin with a service in Church at 2pm, and a long and varied programme of sports which, with intervals for tea for the children and adults, would fill up the time till 9 o’clock. So it was arranged, but unfortunately we reckoned without thinking of the weather, and at 5 o’clock, when everything was in full swing at both places, down came the rain, which however welcome it must have been from the farmer’s point of view, effectually put a stop to everything. The only thing to do then was to get home as quickly as possible, and carry out the remainder of the programmes on the Monday evening, and this the weather fortunately allowed us to do, although there was a drizzling rain when the time came to let off the fireworks on Church Hill. In spit of the weather we feel sure that everyone, and the children especially, enjoyed themselves, and that they will long remember the Peace Celebrations which brought the Great European War to a conclusion.

Extract from the Broadcast Magazine September 1919 :

CHOIR TREAT – The Choir Treat took place Friday August 8th, when a party of 33, which included one or two friends, left Churchill about half-past nine and by train and tram made their way to Stourport, where they embarked on the Steamer “Lady Honor” and went down to Holt Fleet, which was reached about 12.30. On arriving there they went to some Refreshment Rooms, where a supply of sandwiches, buns and ginger beer had been prepared, and these were carried down to the river side just above the weir, and there disposed of. SCOUTS’ AUGUST CAMP – An entirely new camping ground was found this year, as the Churchill Scouts joined with the Broadheath Troop in a camp at Kenswick, near Worcester. The distance being too great to be covered with a “Trek Cart”, a dray was hired from Mr Percy Smith, and the Scouts and luggage were conveyed by road. The camp started on Tuesday August 5th ad was in charge of the Rev S Lloyd, Scoutmaster of the Broadheath Troop. PL J l’combs acted as cook, and PL H Cotterill as bugler. The ordinary camp duties, physical drill, and Scout games occupied the mornings, and games of football and cricket took up the spare time in the rest of the day….. On Sunday there was a Church Parade to Broadheath Church, and on the Monday the Scouts returned home, having had a thoroughly enjoyable camp. NEEDLEWORK GUILD – Mrs Sculthorpe would like to remind the members of this Guild that all garments should be sent in to the Rectory by October 1st. They will be on view there on Friday October 3rd, when she will be glad to see all the members to tea. (More available online – contact Andrew Yardley for details)

FROM YOUR COUNTY AND DISTRICT COUNCILLORS

Firstly, we would like to thank all local residents for their support on 2nd May in electing us to represent you on Wyre Forest District Council for the next 4 years. Lisa joins the team, replacing Cllr. Stephen Williams who retired after 20 years of continuous service on WFDC. WFDC has a wide ranging political make up as a result of the ‘All out’ elections

that took place for the 33 seats. The makeup of WFDC is now as follows:- Conservatives 14 Independent Community Health Concern 8 Independents 5 Liberal Democrats 3 Labour 2 Green 1 There is a ‘Progressive Alliance’ running the Council, made up of all parties and the independents but without the Conservatives. We are delighted that some of the strategic regeneration work that we have started is coming to fruition, for example, Crown House is finally being demolished at no cost to the tax payer. The demolition started at the end of June and will last approximately 30 weeks. Work to open up Worcester Street in Kidderminster to traffic and enhance the public realm is well under way and we have been successful in securing money from the Government’s Future High Street Fund. Closer to home, there will be a further consultation on WFDC’s Local Plan with the Progressive Alliance’s proposals to re-consult on the Local Plan with a matter that very much affects the Churchill and Blakedown area with the proposal to remove land from the green belt between the station and the A456 to create a 170 space car park and 50 houses and indeed proposals to amend the settlement boundary. There will be a drop in session on Wednesday 11th September between 3-6pm at Blakedown Parish Rooms and we would urge all local residents to have their say as part of the consultation The consultation will run from Monday 2nd September – Monday 14th October at 5pm. Residents should receive a household flyer and details can be found on the WFDC website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/localplanreview We have been liaising with local residents and Blakedown Primary School regarding highway safety issues outside the school on the A456 and continue to work with all parties and lobby WCC highways to take action to improve the situation. Should you have local issues you wish us to pursue please get in touch. Our contact details are in Broadcast. District Cllr. Ian Hardiman, County and District Cllr. Marcus Hart and District Cllr. Lisa Jones, Wyre Forest Rural Ward WFDC (which includes Churchill, Blakedown and Broome)

CHURCHILL AND BLAKEDOWN PARISH COUNCIL

Wyre Forest District Council is re-opening the Local Plan Consultation on 2nd September 2019. Here is the press release issued on Thursday 27th June 2019.

News from Wyre Forest District Council

For immediate release: Thursday 27 June 2019

Council debates draft local plan

Wyre Forest District Council is set to agree the latest version of its Local Plan for consultation during September and October.

The council wants to ensure that anyone interested in the Plan has the opportunity to comment on the proposals, but is keen to stress that if you commented previously you do not need to respond again unless you wish to change or add to previous comments.

Councillor Fran Oborski, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration, Planning and Capital Investments explained:

“The council consulted on the Pre Submission version of the Local Plan in November 2018. As a result of responses received we became aware that there were concerns about some of the transport evidence underpinning the Plan so we have agreed to re-open the consultation. We also became aware that some residents did not receive the council leaflets advertising our drop in sessions last year. Anyone sending in their comments as part of the consultation held last year can rest assured that those comments will still be considered and it is not necessary to repeat them. However anyone who did not comment previously, or who wants to change or add to comments previously made, will have the opportunity to do so between Monday 2 September and Monday 14 October.”

In addition to the updated transport modelling evidence there are updated reports on viability and Infrastructure Delivery, including more information about highway improvements on the A450 to support the development of land to the east of Kidderminster. This includes proposals to ease the traffic congestion caused at Mustow Green. No changes are proposed to sites allocated for new residential or employment purposes apart from the removal of land off Yew Tree Walk in Stourport (known as Patrick’s Field) and the recognition that Blakedown Rail Station offers an opportunity, as a transport hub, to accommodate additional car parking to support the role of the station and some limited residential development to enable that.

Councillor Graham Ballinger, Leader of the Council said:

“We have to re-open this consultation to make sure that our technical evidence is up to date and supports the proposals in the plan. We recognise that it is important to promote sustainable transport options and that Blakedown Station is on a major rail route, but does not have the infrastructure necessary to support its role in encouraging people to use the train instead of the car to access important destinations on the Snow Hill line into Birmingham. In order to release land to accommodate increased car parking, in line with a report commissioned by Worcestershire County Council, we are proposing a limited number of new houses which will also help in meeting future housing need in Blakedown. We have also listened to what residents of Stourport had to say about the allocation of land at Yew Tree Walk and agree that it would not be appropriate to bring forward this site for residential development.”

The consultation will be formally opened on Monday 2 September and will last for six weeks. While anybody wishing to inspect the documentation is free to do so at this stage on the council’s website, the council will not be accepting any comments until the start of the consultation.

The council announced on 24 May that it was planning to re-open the consultation originally carried out in autumn 2018. The revised timetable was agreed by the Cabinet on 19 June.

BLAKEDOWN WI – Meeting June & July 2019

Members were welcomed to the meeting and after a day of unremitting rain it was lovely to see so many members braving the weather to enjoy the meeting. Sally provided a pretty bunch of flowers for the Presidents table which were then donated to the raffle. Our speaker, Claire Price, introduced members to Pilates. She gave us an explanation of how it had been developed by Joseph Pilates a

German-American physical trainer as a means of ensuring core strength. Claire has a wide range of exercises she demonstrated and also asked some of the members to demonstrate too. It was both informative and fun although we might not have achieved a high level of fitness after just one session! We enjoyed refreshments, sandwiches, savouries and cake, kindly donated in memory of Marilyn Hiscock by her family. The Denman draw was made and won by Ann lindop. The Annie Harrison Plate competition of sweet tarts produced a wonderful array of tarts and it was judged by Wendy Edwards from Crumbs and the plate awarded to Jane Hillyer. Rosie Cheeseman had won the Denman Bursary in 2018 and attended a cookery course which she gave a review of for members. Rosie so enjoyed her visit she had already booked the next course. The evening finished with our raffle and reminder about the events to come July meeting: Doreen deputised for President Christine and welcomed members and visitors She thanked our coffee hostesses Elaine and Val and Sue for the lovely flowers. Members congratulated Amanda who has recently obtained her degree. There are several events planned, 20th August a garden visit, 1st October a trip to a local recycling centre which will give us an opportunity to finally understand what can/can't be recycled! Also in October our 'Birthday meal' is booked at the Brasserie. Planning for the W.I. Village Show 14th Sept is progressing well with lots of members volunteering to help. Our speaker, Mr Andrew Lound, 'Titanic - Return of a Dream'. A wonderful story-teller, who drew the audience in; stepping into the roles of the characters. We all knew the story but this was a unique presentation which was supported with pictures and evocative music. Our evening concluded with a light-hearted quiz with a nautical theme. Next month we have a 1920s style afternoon tea planned.

We meet second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in Blakedown Parish

Room. Please join us – visitors very welcome

BROOME WI For our first meeting of the new programme we welcomed Anne Nation who told us about her love of silverwork and described how she became a skilled silversmith obtaining her own assay mark. She told us that she holds two exhibitions a year along with a friend who makes ceramics; one exhibition is at the family farm in Holy Cross, Clent and the other at Witley

Court. She also brought along some of her own jewellery for us to look at. Her talk was extremely informative and interesting and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Forthcoming events include a garden visit and our summer Sunday lunch on the 28th July with partners and friends at the Crown & Sandys, Ombersley.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 18th September when we will welcome Sheela Udeshi who will be telling us about Indian Cookery.

We extend a warm invitation to anyone who would like to come and visit, you will be made very welcome. Our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month in Broome Village Hall commencing at 7.30pm. For more information contact: [email protected] or check our email: www. broomewi.com

AUGUST IN THE GARDEN August is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Try to use grey water wherever possible, especially as water butts may be running low if it has been a dry summer. August is traditionally holiday-time, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs. 1. Prune Wisteria 2. Don’t delay summer pruning fruits trained as restricted forms 3. Deadhead flowering plants regularly 4. Watering! Particularly containers, and new plants, preferably with grey recycled

water or stored rainwater 5. Collect seed from garden plants 6. Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready 7. Continue cutting out old fruited canes on raspberries 8. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners 9. Keep ponds and water features topped up 10. Feed the soil with green manures

Wanda's dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next

day, she told the repairman, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on

the counter, and I'll mail you a check."

"Oh, by the way don't worry about my bulldog Spike. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do

NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot!" "I REPEAT, DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!"

When the repairman arrived at Wanda's apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest,

meanest looking bulldog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the

carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name

calling. Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid,

ugly bird!"

To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!"

BROOME WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP

Broome Women’s Fellowship held their final meeting on 16th July 2019. Following brief AGM reports, Mrs Eileen Rock on finance, and President Mrs Sheila Rees said it was, with certain sadness, that the Fellowship, after 57 years, had to close. It had been always a happy and entertaining meet. Marie Skerratt gave (memories) recalling some of the many speakers who she had booked. Some were informative on different subject, others had been hilariously funny. The evening then had Janet Dickinson give a selection of poems followed by a delicious buffet, then celebration cake marked 57 years of Fellowship, provided by Marie Skerratt. Graham Rock played Auld Lang syne, sung by everyone as the finale.

Should all acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind,

Should all acquaintance be forgot and the days of auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,

We'll take a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne.

Let's have a drink or maybe two or maybe three or four

Or five or six or seven or eight or maybe even more.

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,

We'll take a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne.

When it gets to closing time and if you still want more,

I know a pub in Inverness that never shuts its door.

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,

We'll take a cup of kindness yet for the sake of auld lang syne.

CLENT MOTHERS’ UNION

Our annual outing was on a beautiful

summer day. We travelled to Bodenham

Arboretum for afternoon tea which was

served in the annexe to the restaurant,

meaning we had a private room

overlooking the lake and trees. It couldn’t

have been better and we do thank Anne for

organizing everything. It was also very

good to see Jan who felt well enough to

join us and we thank Richard for bringing

her. It was a lovely afternoon.

We do not have an August meeting and our

next branch meeting will be on Thursday 5th

September at 2pm in Clent Parish Hall.

Our speaker will be Gaye Pye who is going

to tell us about her life in South Korea. We

have enjoyed Gaye speaking to us once

before and we are sure this will be an

interesting talk. It will be good to meet with

members following the summer break.

CLENT GARDENING CLUB

The month of June saw members welcome Robin Pearce from Hallow near Worcester to give his talk entitled “Crazy Daisies (Exploring the world of “daisy-like flowers). Robin began his talk with an introduction to the species which literally contained thousands of varieties including, members were surprised to learn, such plants as lettuce and artichokes from the vegetable garden! Robin also surprised members with the revelation that daisies are amongst the oldest plants on the planet with fossilised daisies having been found dating back around 50 million years. Robin spoke eloquently on his subject supported by a fine array of colour photography much of which he had taken himself following which, after a short question and answer session, members enjoyed the usual tea/coffee and biscuits before the raffle was drawn and the Chairman announced the results of the monthly competitions. The Chairman reminded members that the next meeting would be on Friday 26 July comprising a talk by Ian Thwaites on “Cacti & Succulents”. The chairman also reminded members that tickets were still available for the day outing in Herefordshire on 18 July following which the meeting closed. All are welcome at our meetings which are held at Clent Village Hall on the 4th Friday each month and anyone interested in either joining or just visiting the Club can get further details by visiting our website on https://clentgardeningclub.wordpress.com or by contacting our Chairman Martin Grange 01562 883009/07917 184762.

June 2019

The Hagley Rotary Club returned to the Lyttelton Arms following its refurbishment and was greeted with a brand-new menu and accommodation, which was very welcomed. Returning to business we were privileged to have Rotarian David Valentine our Assistant District Governor for the annual club assembly who was equally impressed with the meal selections and our new venue.

Preparations and the program for the coming Rotary Year were outlined by Vice Presedent Godfrey Partridge who stressed the intention that the year would be entertaining, sociable and most importantly fun, each and every Monday Evening.

Social evenings with our partners were to be more frequent and the speaker lists already included well informed and varied contributions from Sports, Stage Performers, Television Presentors, Cullanary Experts, Treasure Trove, Exploration and Travel as well as Financial and Investment Advisory Centers..

In addition to the quiz and games evenings , we have made preparation for the objectives of Rotary to be explained more fully by setting aside a meeting each month for discussion and examination of the months Rotary topic.

So if readers would like to have fun with purpose give consideration to joining our club who meet at 7.00pm for 7.30pm on Monday evenings at the Lyttleton Arms by visiting our website at https://hagleyrotary.wixsite.com/website. Or make a phone call to:

Martin Freckelton on 01562 700 391 or Dave Santus on 01562 886 529

who will be delighted to tell you more about our Rotary Club in Hagley and its activities.

Two paramedics were dispatched to check on an elderly man who had become disoriented. They

decided to take him to the hospital for evaluation. En route, with siren going, they questioned the

man to determine his level of awareness. Leaning close, one asked, "Sir, do you know what we're

doing right now?" The old man slowly eased himself up, then gazed out the ambulance window

and replied, "I'd say about 50, maybe 55."
