Escape Salon and Spa is a holistic health resort designed to transform and rejuvenate the body. This wholesome place provides clients with an escape from everyday stress and refreshment that lingers long after they leave. Upon entering the doors of Escape, clients are met with organic curves and peaceful tones of misty blue, warm grey and taupe on the interior walls. Fo-cus is immediately drawn to the sight and trickling sounds of the water wall located behind the curved reception counter.
Escape Salon clients are taken through a rejuve-nation cycle that begins with massage thera-py to relax the client as well as remove toxins and impurities. As one of the key relaxation methods and the beginning of the pam-pering process, these massage rooms are located fittingly at the center of Escape where the surrounding circular hallway provides access to other supporting renewal activities. Other rejuvena-tion activities include, hair, nail, make-up and tanning services as well as a smoothie bar to complete the experience.

House of sHalom Women’s sHelTer
The House of Shalom Women’s Shelter was designed to bring new life and purpose back to the Bethlehem Church by providing a safe, warm home for 5 women and their children. The church renovation preserves and showcases much of the existing structure. Wood, metal, glass and stone were used in various parts of the project to provide a variety of interesting textures. Warm grey and red tones used in furnishings throughout add a cozy feel while also enhancing the existing historic wood accents. A mid-century modern style with an updated flair was used to reflect the original character of the church while providing with a fresh new look.

The American Airlines project was a fictional office space for an airlines management/marketing office. The inspiration for the design revolved around the idea of “the sky is the limit”. The various components of the design were placed to portray the feeling of being in flight, with the flowing light fixtures representing clouds and the linear carpet pattern conjuring up images of the aircraft aisle with its rows of seats. Colors were selected based on company colors with the one pop of red color reserved for the marketing director’s chair as a symbol of power and intensity.

The bare hallway from the Wellness and Recreation Center to the Dome on the University of Northern Iowa Campus leads to and from one of the most rec-ognized sporting event facilities in the state. It is home to the UNI Panthers, a very successful D1 program in all sports. Every prospective student walks through that tunnel and out onto the stadium. Every sports recruit walks through that tunnel. They should know, and feel the legacy of the dome as they walk though that hallway. As each person walks though that tunnel, their anticipa-tion and excitement of what is ahead should be building.
The concept of the hallway is to lead a stranger into a place that builds excitement and panther pride when passing though. The hallway will build peoples anticipation as they walk through, so that by the end they are running to see what is ahead. They should feel as though they are walking out on that field for game day. People who walk through should feel motivated by the space. I want people to not only know, but feel the legacy of the Dome and the University of Northern Iowa.

The design for the Palliative Care Unit located in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was completed during my internship at Heery International. The goal of the project was to renovate the palliative care rooms to have a more hospitality- like feel. Because this was end of life care, it was important for the design to have as much of a “homelike” feel as possible so that patients and their families could say their last goodbyes as comfortably as possible. Two color schemes along with new flooring, furniture, upholstery, paint and solid surfaces were chosen for the spaces. Fold out chairs, sleeper chair and sofa with a pop up table in the middle were chosen to maximize the comfort and functionality for visiting family. I had the opportunity to present the design to the UIHC personnel and the hospital staff selected the purple color scheme which has now been implemented.

My job for the University of Northern Iowa Sustainability Office was to create site plan that enhanced the aesthetic and visual interest of the Panther Plot, a student run garden that grows organic food for the university dining centers, farmers market and the community. The plan will be implemented over a five year period starting in the Spring of 2015. After meeting with the users’ and asking what their wants and needs of the space were, we came up with some goals and objectives to improve the Panther Plot. The goal is to make the Panther Plot more attractive for students and volunteers, as well as implementing signage welcoming guests into the garden and/or offering a place to relax.

ENTRANCE PERGOLA AND TRELLIS - serves as a way to create a sense of place and welcome as well as host signage educating people about the Panther Plot.
DRAW STUDENTS INTO THE GARDEN - USE SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES AND MATERIALS - CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE
OUTDOOR CLASSROOM/OBSERVATION DECK - surrounded by herbs and an overhead pergola this is a space for small classes to relocate on a nice day or anyone to come and enjoy the garden.
