INTRODUCTION

As the Chairman of British Water Ski Racing, it is my pleasure together with Darren Kirkland your GB Team Captain and the entire Racing Committee to once again welcome you to the British National Water Ski Racing 2011 season.

This year the National series will consist of 8 venues, and 6 results will count to the Championship titles. We begin with a welcome return to Burnham on Sea, followed by Allhallows, then to Marnham for the river race which this year is part of our National series, from there we move to Lyme Regis and Stone in Essex. We then travel to Weston Super Mare mid July, followed in August by Hunstanton and fi nally Brixham for our last GB race.

I am pleased that we can look forward to a full programme of 5 Europe Cup races this year together with Cardiff who this year are hosting the Europe Cup fi nal race, early in August.

This year the 17th World Water Ski Racing Championships are to be held in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia, during September, and the fi rst fi ve races in the British National Championships will be the selection races for our squad of skiers and team members.

The venue for this years Racing Ball will be the Thistle Hotel on the seafront at Brighton on November 26th, where we shall be celebrating not only another successful year in Ski Racing but hopefully some major achievements in Australia.

In conclusion I would like to wish everyone a very enjoyable, successful and safe year of Water Ski Racing in 2011.

British Water Ski & Wakeboard is the National Governing Body for water skiing in Great Britain and is recognised as such by Sport England and UK Sport and is in receipt of Exchequer Funding from them. International LinksBritish Water Ski & Wakeboard is affi liated to the International Water Ski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWSF) through the Europe, Africa and Middle East Region (EAME). Britain is a major player in the world of water skiing having individual skiers and riders as World and EAME Champions, as well as teams featuring in the medals at World and EAME Championships. As part of the IWWSF we also have a good number of our members sitting on World and EAME Committees and therefore able to put forward a British perspective into the rules of the sport.

The IWWSF is responsible for organising World Championships in the Sports Divisions (see below). The EAME Region organises EAME (European) Championships in the same divisions.

National Sporting LinksBritish Water Ski is a member of the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) which is the umbrella organisation for the national governing and representative bodies of sport and recreation in the UK. The CCPR speaks and acts to promote, protect and develop the interests of sport and physical recreation at all levels.We are also members of the Boating Alliance; the European Boating Association, the Parliamentary Waterways Group and ROSPA.

Membership of these bodies is important to our ongoing environmental programme.

Water Ski racing is the fastest form of skiing. Racing is very much a team event and you will see from reading all of our team pro� les that camaraderie, team work and support plays a huge part of each race. You will notice that many teams are made up of families and very close friends.

As well as the skier, there is a driver who controls the boat and pulls the skier, according to the skier’s ability, the water and the competitors around the boat. Then there is an observer, who is facing the rear of the boat enabling him to keep a close eye on the skier at all times, relaying hand signals to the driver through an intercom system.

The observer has to make sure that the skier is skiing to his or her maximum ability and ensuring they don’t take a fall and loose valuable time. The observer is also keeping a close eye on the competition and informing the driver of positions at all times.

Racing adopts a ‘wrapping’ style, where two ski handles are held behind the back with one hand and a third handle is held at arms length in front, with the other hand. Skiing in this way allows the skier to race for longer periods of time without excess strain on the back. A speci� c race ski is used to maintain better control in the water and travel at higher speeds.

• The crew consists of a boat driver and one observer only

• The minimum age for a driver is 18 years of age

• Either one or two skis maybe used, although skis must be in serviceable condition and must be � orescent � ame orange

RULES

Before the start of each race every team shall attend a brie� ng, this enables them to understand the circuit. All courses run in an anti-clockwise direction.

Race distances:Main Race 50 minutes plus 1 lapSupport Race 35 minutes plus 1 lapBrit Kids A 15 minutes plus 1 lapBrit Kids B 25 minutes plus 1 lap

Races are to be conducted over a 5 km course where possible.

For a simultaneous mass start, a 3 minute signal shall be given by raising the National fl ag together with a green � ag on a starting boat or dock in sight of the skiers and boat crew. The 30 second signal is given by lowering the green � ag. Skiers may then enter the water from their boats which may then take up the slack in the ski line. The start will be signalled by the lowering of the National fl ag and skiers must not be in a skiing position until the start is signalled.

Race control � agsYellow - CautionThe judges and safety boats will raise the yellow � ag when the skier has fallen, when a skier is in the water or in any other case of interference after the National fl ag has started the race.Red - Stop the raceAll judge boats will carry a Red fl ag to stop the race on the instructions of the Chief judge. At the completion of the race the red � ag will indicate ‘return to the pit area’.Black - Disquali� cationThe black � ag is used to notify a competitor that he/she has been disquali� ed and must retire from the race. When shown it will be pointed at the o� ender and they must withdraw from the race immediately.BlueThe blue � ag is used to signal to all competitors that the leader of the race has begun his last lap.Chequered - FinishThe chequered � ag indicates the end of the race.OrangeFor use by observers when their skier is in the water.Blue/whiteTo be used by observers when medical attention is required.

Skier: Harvey Robinson aged 22 is a mechanic from Cambridgeshire. Harvery has been skiing for 7 years, he started skiing at a National competition in Hunstanton in 2003 and hasn’t looked back since. Harvey says his best racing experience was skiing F1 in the World Championships in 2009 and winning the F2 category at the Hunstanton National in 2010.

Driver: Robert Jenkins aged 31 is a marine engineer from Weston Super Mare. Robert has been driving boats for over 11 years and fi rst started racing when his brother bet him that Robert would never own a boat that his brother couldn’t ski behind! Rob says he has now proved him wrong! Robert’s best experiences whilst racing have been winning the Europeans in Harderwijk and also the Diamond Race in Belgium, all in the same year.

Observer: Kevin Clark aged 41 is a plumber from Bristol. Kevin has been observing for 15 years and his best racing experiences were winning the Europeans in Plymouth and also winning the Europeans in Harderwijk with Robert Jenkins.

This is fi rst year Harvery, Robert and Kevin will race together and their goals for this year are to be selected for the British Team to enable them to take part in the World Championships in Australia in September.

Skier: Darren Kirkland aged 49 is a builder from London. Darren started skiing when he was just 8 years old and soon got the bug! Darren has been both British and European Formula 2 and Formula 1 Champion, winning the British F1 title no less than six times. He has represented Great Britain in the World Championships many times and won the Diamond Race in Belgium in 2010.

Driver: Steve Cox aged 49 is a water ski coach from Burnham on Sea in Somerset. Steve has been skiing and driving since 1981 when he was teaching the Navy in Gibraltar.

Observer: Steve Bird aged 41 is a builder from Burnham on Sea in Somerset. Steve has been observing for over 20 years and sometimes fi nds it diffi cult to ski, following an accident when he was run over by another boat.

The Lions won the overall British Water Ski racing Championships last year and are looking forward to the challenges this year will bring.

Skier: Steven Moore MBE is a builder from Birchington in Kent. Steven has been racing for many years and has been the World champion. He retired from racing 20 years ago and has returned this year to get back to the top of his game with the Cyclone team. Steven says his best racing experience was winning the F1 World Championship in Australia.

Driver: Martin McLaughlin is a boat builder from Rochester in Kent. Martin has been driving since he retired from skiing in 1990 and started his skiing career at the Varne boat club in Kent. His best racing experience was winning Giro Del Lario twice and winning round 4 of the European championships in Spain in 2010.

Observer: Roger Crook is a builder from Canterbury in Kent. Roger has been observing for many years and has raced with Cyclone boats and Martin and a number of skiers winning many regional, national and international races.

This is the fi rst year Cyclone Boats Great Britain have raced as a team.When asked what they enjoyed about ski racing, they all said ‘friendly people, both old and new’.The team goals for 2011 are to enjoy the racing and if they get results, well, that would be a bonus!

Skier: Richard Kirk aged 35 is an equipment engineer from Newmarket. He has been skiing for 15 years and learnt to ski behind his dad’s boat on holiday in Devon. Richard is current F2 British Champion.His best racing experience was participating in the Catalina Ski Race in America, or possibly not being lapped by Darren Kirkland during the Cardiff race last year!

Driver: Bradley Cannings aged 37 is a Managing Director from Exeter. Bradley has been driving for over 15 years and learnt to ski at his local club in Exmouth when he was only 4 years old, he started racing as a teenager. Bradley says his best racing experience was the Catalina Water Ski Race in America.

Observer: Tim Mayers aged 41 is an electrician from Lyme Regis. Tim has been observing for over 24 years and has been driving for 23 years. He fi rst got involved in ski racing many years ago when he took part in a regional race in Lyme Regis. Tim is also the South west Chairman and vice chairman of the British Water Ski Racing committee and he is very active in the promotion of the sport. His best experience was driving and winning the river Trent Race at Marnham in 2010.

Team H20 has been racing together for 7 years and have achieved British Champion in Formula 2 twice, as well as being a Bronze medal winner in the Diamond Race in Belgium in 2010.When asked what they most enjoy about racing they said ‘As a team, when it all clicks into place it’s an amazing buzz and you can’t leave the sport alone!’

Team goals for 2011 are to defend the F2 British title and to get to another World Championship.

Skier: James Bartlett is an engineer in the South West. He has been skiing competitively for 4 years and this is his second year in F2. James’ dad, John Bartlett, who competed for 20 years as a driver in the sport, is how James got involved in ski racing.

Driver: Rod Hawkins aged 43, is an architect and builder. Rod started ski racing in 1974 and has been driving race boats for over 20 years. Rod has also skied competively, in F2, Seniors and European racing. When asked what his best racing experience was he said, ‘There are too many to mention!’

After a tough start to last year’s competition, due to injury, Bubblin Hot is keen to get competitive again, and the ultimate aim is to be picked for the GB team for the Worlds competition in Australia.

Skier: Russell Cox aged 46 is a ‘dodgy east End market trader’ from Chigwell. Russell has been skiing for over 37 years and he learnt to ski when his dad took him to Thorpe Park for a day out. He says his best racing experience was winning the Silver in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

Driver: Robert Waite aged 56 is a ‘not so dodgy car dealer’ from Pevensey in East Sussex. Robert has been driving for over 20 years and started driving when his brother in law Gary Clark and his Dad Fred introduced him to ski racing at Varne Boat Club in Kent. Robert says his best racing experience was driving Russell and Charlie in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

Observer: Martyn Robinson aged 43 is a HGV Driver from Rayleigh. Martyn has been observing for 10 years and fi rst became interested in racing when he was asked to be a safety boat at a National ski race at Stone Water Sports Club, 12 years ago. He enjoys being part of the Jump ‘N’ Jive team and enjoys his part in each race.

The Jump ‘N’ Jive team have been together for 5 years and have achieved silver medallist in the European Championships in 2010 and 2nd overall British Champion in 2010.When asked what they enjoy about racing they said ‘The exhilaration of each race and after hours of practice and a new rig, being a really competitive team.’The goals for 2011 for the team are the return of Russell to Formula 2 to allow Charlie Cox to race in the juniors category. Russell is as fi t as ever and aims to give the youngsters a run for their money and also to be selected for the Worlds team for Australia!‘No more downs!’

Skier: Will Newland is 19 and an architecture student from Caterham in Surrey. Will has been skiing for 11 years and he learnt to ski aged 8 in Orepesa Del Mar, Spain when his mum (Paula Newland, British Ladies Skier) was competing in the World titles. Otherwise he remembers being thrown over the side of the boat at the old Varne club aged about 3 with a pair of skis on, for his very fi rst attempt and got dragged head fi rst through the water when he didn’t let go of the handle. It’s a wonder he was never put off! When asked about his best racing experience Will said, ‘Easiest question in the world. The Catalina Ski Race 2010! My fi rst Catalina and defi nitely not the last; 62 mile round trip across open ocean, huge fl eets of spectator boats and helicopters fl ying overhead fi lming, oh and skiers racing behind some VERY big boats for good measure!’

Driver: Nigel Newland aged 43 is a construction Manager from Caterham in Surrey. Nigel has been driving for many years as a social boat driver and is now fast learning the art of race driving. Nigel began skiing at the age of 8 at the Varne Boat Club on the Kent coast as he was fortunate to grow up boating with his family most weekends. Nigel says his best racing experience was as a skier, winning the British F3 and F2 Championships and enjoys being part of the crew for his son Will and his wife Paula.

The True Colours team have been racing for 3 years together.The team goals for True Colours in 2011 are to be amongst the front runners of Formula 2 in Britain and to represent Team GB at the 2011 World titles in Australia.Ski racing is very much a family affair for the Newlands with Paula Newland, Will’s mum, skiing in the Ladies category and Martin Davies, Will’s grandfather, skiing in the senior category.

Skier: Sam Clapson aged 17 is a student from Billericay in Essex. Sam has been skiing since he was 8 years old and will this year be skiing in Formula 2 following a number of very successful years skiing in the junior category. Sam has been training hard and is looking forward to the challenges in 2011.

Driver: Barrie Clapson works in the music and formula 1 motorsport business and is from Billericay in Essex. Barrie has been driving boats for many years and is Sam’s dad. Barrie is very proud of his son’s achievements and has put this new F2 rig together for the 2011 season and is looking forward to this season and competing at a senior level.

Observer: John Stedaford is from Billericay in Essex. John is returning to ski racing this year following a break for a few years when he competed as a rider in a motorcycle race team. John has known Barrie and Sam for many years and is looking forward to returning to the sport he loves and working with the Wet Dreams team to achieve their objectives for 2011.

Sam has achieved many accolades in his skiing career, including representing Great Britain in the World Championships and also being the fi rst GB junior skier in the Diamond race in Belgium.The Wet Dreams team are sponsored by Clapson Music and Entertainments Ltd and B S C Express Courier and Transportation Ltd.The team goals for 2011 are to be successful in formula 2 this year in both Britain and European racing.

Skier: James Smith aged 21 is a paint mixer from Hornchurch. James started skiing with his old man, who used to do it before he realised that he wasn’t very good, so James and his brother took over! James has been skiing for about 10 years and his best racing experience was skiing in the World Championships and the Europeans.

Driver: Trevor Barnes aged 63 is a site surveyor from Hornchurch. Trevor started drivng for his brother in law and then started racing when his son wanted to ski race and has been driving for 43 years. When asked what his best racing experience was he says driving for Jonathan Twigg in the Diamond race in Viersel and driving for Cliff Featherstone in the London Docks National.

Observer: Simon Smith aged 45 is a furniture manufacturer and upholsterer from Hornchurch. Simon started skiing in F3 and observed in the support race before stopping skiing. Simon now observes for his son and has been observing for 10 years.

2011 is the second year racing together as a team.

Skier: Kurt Brooks aged 20 is a car detailer from Essex. Kurt has been skiing for 12 years and has been racing for 4 years. Kurt learnt to ski socially with his family at a young age and then progressed to the race circuit. Kurt says his best racing experience is taking part in the Catalina Water Ski Race in Long Beach California in 2010.

Driver: Derren Estall aged 40 works in transport logistics and is from Essex. Derren has been driving boats since 1983 and started racing when be purchased his own boat and decided to race with it. When asked, Derren said his best racing experience was taking part in the 2009 World Championships in Belgium.

Observer: Martin Brooks aged 48 is a car detailer from Essex. Martin has been observing for over 18 years and started racing with his family in regional races at Stone Water sports Club and has been racing for 36 years.

The team Brooksy Racing has been competing together for 3 years.The team were British F2 team members and also came 3rd in the 16-24 men’s race at the 2010 Catalina Water Ski Race in California.When asked what they enjoy most about ski racing they said the team work and competitiveness.The goals for the 2011 season for team Brooksy Racing are to make the British team selection and compete in the World Championships in Australia later in the year.

Skier: Cliff Featherstone aged 58 is from Bishop Auckland, Co Durham. Cliff has been skiing since 1967 and started skiing in Hartlepool yacht club with his father Ron in an Albatross Ski Boat. He recalls winning his fi rst race at the age of 14, not as a skier but as a driver for his father! Cliff says his best racing experience was winning the 1976 European Grand Prix in Hartlepool.

Driver: Steve Graham aged 52 is from Bishop Auckland, Co Durham. Steve has been driving ski boats for many years and last held a ski racing drivers licence in 1982! Steve started skiing at an early age, skiing in his fi rst race in 1972. He joined Hartlepool Yacht Club with his father John and brother Phil in 1968. Steve bought his present boat ‘The Fall Guy’ in 1982 with his father John. Steve has spent a lot of time as an observer, mainly for Cliff over the last 30 years.

Observer: Neil Mackechnie from Trimdon, Co Durham has been observing for many years, fi rstly for Dave Jordan and John Borthwick. Later Neil observed with Vic Murray and also for Ian and Natalie Scott for a number of seasons. Neil started at Hartlepool observing for Dave Jordan in training and then took part in the nationals. Neil’s best racing experience was being in the British team in 1999 at the World Championships in Spain observing for Natalie Scott and also competing in 3 European Championships.

Skier: Daryl Tyndall aged 19 is an electrician from Romford in Essex. Daryl has been skiing for 7 years and started racing when he watched a regional race at Stone club and wanted to give it a go. He hasn’t looked back since!

Driver: Dave Richards aged 52 is a jack of all trades and a master of none from Rainham in Essex. Dave has been skiing for 17 years and began his racing career when he offered to observe in a few club races at Stone and then moved onto the Nationals and driving. Dave says his best racing experience was racing in Harderwijk in the Europeans in 2007.

Observer: Peter Tyndall aged 49 is an electrical engineer from Romford in Essex. Peter has been observing for 7 years and he started racing when his son Daryl decided that he wanted to give it a go. Peter says his best racing experience was taking part in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

This will be the 8th year the team have raced together and they love the fact ski racing is very much a family sport and very sociable. They have made many friends all over the world in the last 8 years.The goals for the Screamin Demon team in 2011 are to do their best in F2 and improve on last year.

Skier: Jack Lynch aged 22 is from Newmarket and started skiing 7 years ago when his step Dad tried to teach him. Jack has been racing for 3 years and says his best racing experience was the World Championships in 2009.

Driver: Greg Bassam aged 48 from Peterborough. Greg is the owner of GB Watersports (boat engine sales) and has been driving boats for 38 years. Greg started skiing at the age of 14 and then started driving when he was 20 and he has driven for lots of skiers over the years. Greg says his best racing experience is achieving a podium place in the 1995 World Championships with his daughter Hayley in the junior girl’s category and recently achieving a podium place in the Diamond Race with Jack in his fi rst year of racing.

Observer: Alan Fielding aged 48 from Manea is in garden machinery sales. Alan has been observing for 20 years and started observing with Jan Norman in the 80’s and later with his son Matt. Alan says his best racing experience was winning the Diamond Race with Matt in F3.

The driver and skier have been racing together for 3 years and the observer is joining them this year to share his experience.To date, Jack and Greg have achieved 3rd in European Championships in F3, 2nd in F3 in the 2008 Diamond Race in Jack’s fi rst year of racing, 2nd in the National championships in F2 and 10th in the World Championships in 2009.The team’s goals for 2011 are to win and get selected for the British Team again.

Skier: Ashley Murray aged 34 is an electrician from Paulton near Bath. Ashley started skiing 25 years ago when he was 7. He was taught by his parents in Lyme Regis behind his dad’s 535 Shetland Shelty. Ashley says his best racing experience was in Stone in 2009 with Alan Veater driving and his wife Tina observing, they nearly had the win but the line snapped on the last lap!

Driver: Alan Veater aged 41 is an Operations manager from Radstock near Bath. Alan has been skiing and driving for many years and learnt to ski when he was 10 In Bristol Docks. This is Alan’s 3rd year of driving on the National circuit; he drives for both Ashley and also his daughter Robyn. When asked what was Alan’s best racing experience he said ‘ driving H20 F2 boat for his daughter Robyn in Hunstanton in 2010, the last lap was very close and taking her across the line, fl at out to take 2nd place.’ Alan says he loves the camaraderie of racing and the adrenalin rush at the beginning of each race.

Observer: Kelly Turner aged 39 is a damp technician from Portishead. Kelly has been racing since 1990. He was a safety boat driver for the races at Burnham on Sea and then got involved in racing and began driving and observing and has been part of a number of teams since. Kelly says his best racing experience was with Matt Fielding and James Smith in the Southern 80 in Australia in 2006 and fi nishing silver in the Europeans with Matt Fielding in Austria.

This will be the fi rst year Four Play will race as a team, although Alan and Ashley raced together in 2009.When asked what their goals are for the 2011 season they said to get a podium position in the Championships.

Skier: Martin Davies aged 66, lives in Chepstow in South Wales and has been skiing for 44 years and started when he bought a ski boat with a Ford 110E engine, back in 1966.

Driver: David Llewellyn aged 71, lives in Bargoed in South Wales. David has been driving boats for 34 years and started when he met Martin.

Observer: Colin Harris aged 57, lives in Cardiff in South Wales. Colin has been ski racing for 38 years and started when Howard Smith’s father took him to Chasewater to see a national ski race.

Rebel Racing have been racing as a team for 38 years, on and off , and Colin also observed for Martin in the cross channel race in 1972.

Skier: John Grimes aged 51 is a steel erector from Weston Super Mare. John was given a ski magazine when he was in hospital with a broken femur and it gave him the incentive to get back going again 21 years ago. He has been skiing for 21 years socially and 15 years competitively. John says his best racing experience was becoming Formula 3 champion in 2005 and also Cardiff Bay in 2009 when he won the race overall and winning 3 times Formula 3 at Marham.

Driver: Robert Jenkins aged 31 is a marine engineer from Weston Super Mare. Robert has been driving boats for over 11 years and fi rst started racing when his brother bet him that Robert would never own a boat that his brother couldn’t ski behind! Rob says he has now proved him wrong! Roberts best experiences whilst racing were winning the Europeans in Hardevick and also the Diamond Race in Belgium, all in the same year.

Observer: Kevin Clark aged 41 is a plumber from Bristol. Kevin has been observing for 15 years and his best racing experiences were winning the Europeans in Plymouth and also winning the Europeans in Harderwijk with Robert Jenkins.

Their best achievements to date are formula 4 sports boat in 1994,winning the river Marnham in formula 3, Diamond race winner in 2003, 4th in the under 19 Southern 80 in 2006 and many more.When asked what the team enjoy most about racing they said ‘the teams and people and the thousands of miles they travel and the opportunity to ski in 2 World Championships and 4 Europeans.’

Skier: Geoff Watson aged 35 from Durham in Co Durham. Geoff learned to ski on Loch Lomond in 1986 whilst on holiday after a ski race there.

Skier: Paula Newland is from Caterham in Surrey and is the current British ladies champion. Paula learnt to ski on Llangorse lake in South wales behind a Dory which was the tender to a luxury powerboat. Paula says her best racing experience was the dreaded Belgium canal in the Diamond race to win F2 ladies in 2010.

Driver: Dave Llewelyn aged 71 is from Bargoed in South wales. Dave has been driving boats for 33 years and started when he met Martin Davies, Paula’s dad.

Observer: Nigel Newland is 43 and is a construction manager from Caterham in Surrey. Nigel began skiing at the age of 8 at the Varne Boat Club on the Kent coast as he was fortunate to grow up boating with his family most weekends. Nigel says his best racing experience was meeting his wife Paula at venues in 1986 – warning Nigel says women weaken legs!

The True Colours team have raced together for around 10 years and have achieved British team for 3 World Championships, 2010 Ladies British Champion, 2nd place in F2 ladies in the European Championships in 2010 and 1st place F2 ladies in the Diamond Race in Belgium in 2010.The team goals for 2011 are to enjoy every race and race safely.Paula’s father Martin Davies also races in the senior category and her son Will races is F2.

Skier: Clare Kirk aged 37 is an offi ce manager from Lichfi eld. Clare will become Mrs Taylor during the season as she will be marrying her observer, Roy on 16th April 2011. Clare has been skiing for 16 years and started skiing with her dad who used to take part in the club races at Hunstaton. When asked what her best racing experience was, Clare said ‘taking part in the European Championships in Spain in 2010 as the racing was at a beautiful location and the weather was hot!’

Driver: Greg Bassam owns GB Watersports and has been driving for many years. Greg fi rst started racing when him and Noah built a race boat! When we asked Greg what was his best racing experience he said ‘any race with Roy, he is my hero!’

Observer: Roy Taylor aged 31 is the owner of Taylors Autos and is from Lichfi eld. Roy has been observing for 3 years and started racing with his Uncle and brother when they were racing. Roy agrees with Clare that the European Championships in Spain in 2010 was his best racing experience too.

The Taylor team have been racing together for 3 years and their best achievement has been coming 4th in the ladies category in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.The goal for the team this year is to be chosen to represent GB at the Australian World championships later in the year.

Driver: James Robinson aged 46 is a engineer from Cambridgeshire. James has been driving for 6 years and started when he pulled his son Harvey (F1 category this year) in club races. James says his best racing experience was winning the F2 national race in Hunstanton in 2010.

Observer: Simon Gale aged 52 is a tennis court builder from Newmarket. Simon has been observing for 5 years and he started when he offered to help get Ash Cooper fi t for the world championships in 2005, his back still hurts now, he says. Simon says his best racing experience was taking part in a major competition with equipment that works!

This is the fi rst year that the On a Budget team will race together.When asked what they enjoy most about racing they said ‘hopefully the smiles at the end of the rope and on both sides of the boat after 40 minutes or so!’The team goals for 2011 are to bond as a team and give it their best!

Skier: Kelly Anne Roberts aged 20 is a hair dresser from Wales. Kelly says her favourite UK venue is Cardiff Bay and her most memorable race to date was skiing in Hunstanton.

Driver: Anthony Scaccia aged 30 years is a TV engineer from Wales. Anthony says his favourite UK venue is Cardiff Bay and his most memorable race was in Lachearn Head.

Observer: David Silver is ‘over 21’ and is retired. David says his favourite UK venue is Weston Super Mare and his most memorable race to date was in Stathclyde Park.

Skier: Dan ‘from Cardiff’ Ellis aged 16 is a student from Penarth. Dan has been ski racing for 2 years and started racing in February 09 to punish his dad! When asked what were Dan’s best racing experiences he said ‘taking the 3rd in my fi rst Diamond race in Belgium in 2010 and coming 3rd in Euro Kids B in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

Driver: David Ellis aged 50 is a game designing guru and is from Penarth. David has been driving boats for 25 years and started when he bought a Picton GTS and raced it in a national at Chasewater in 1986. The Picton gained the affectionate name of the ‘plastic Pig’ in that race. Shortly after I bought ‘Yampower’ and pulled Martin Davies to 2 gold’s in 1987 and 1988 in F4. David says his best racing experience was winning 3rd place with his son Dan in the Diamond race in 2010. Such an achievement for a newcomer!

Observer: Colin Harris aged 56 is a bouncer at Toys R us and is from Cardiff. Colin has been racing for 5 years and started his involvement with the sport when the ski boat was fi rst invented and he found a ski washed up on the shore. That day water-ski racing as we know it today was invented! Colin says his best racing experience was the 7 titles and skiing in F3 in the Diamond Race.

The team has been racing together for a year and they are looking forward to their 2nd year of racing. In their fi rst year they achieved a 3rd place in the British Junior Championships in 2010, a 3rd place in the European Championships in Euro Kids B and a 3rd place in the Diamond Race in Belgium in Euro Kids B.The Stand and Deliver team goals for 2011 are to get picked for the World Championships in Australia and a sponsor for it too!

Skier: Scott Brooks aged 16 is a student from Essex. Scott has been racing for 4 years and learnt to race with his family at a young age and then progressed to the race circuit. Scott says his best racing experience was the European Championships in Spain 2010.

Driver: Derren Estall aged 40 works in transport logistics and lives in Essex. Derren has been driving boats since 1983 and began his racing career after purchasing a race boat, wanting to join in on the fun. Derren says his best racing experience was the 2009 World Championships in Belgium.

Observer: Martin Brooks aged 48 is a car detailer from London. Martin has been observing for over 18 years and started ski racing with his family over 36 years ago at Stone Water Sports Club. Martin says his best racing experience was taking part in the Catalina Water ski race in California and all 5 World Championships that he has taken part in too.

The Brooksy Racing team have been racing together for 3 years and have achieved a 3rd in 16-24 men in the Catalina Water Ski race and British F2 team members.The team goals for Brooksy Racing in 2011 are to make the British team for the World championships in Australia.

Skier: Charlie Cox aged 15 is a student from Wickford in Essex. Charlie has been skiing for 5 years and learnt to ski when he went out on the water with his Dad and uncle. Charlie says his best racing experience was skiing in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

Driver: Robert Waite aged 56 is a ‘not so dodgy car dealer’ from Pevensey in East Sussex. Robert has been driving for over 20 years and started driving when his brother in law Gary Clark and his Dad Fred introduced him to ski racing at Varne Boat Club in Kent. Robert says his best racing experience was driving Russell and Charlie in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

Observer: Martyn Robinson aged 43 is a HGV Driver from Rayleigh. Martin has been observing for 10 years and fi rst became interested in racing when he was asked to be a safety boat at a National ski race at Stone Water Sports Club, 12 years ago. Martyn enjoys being part of the Jump ‘N’ Jive team and enjoys his part in each race.

The Jump N Jive team has been skiing together for 2 years and they have achieved Silver in Brit Kids b in the British Championships, 4th overall in the European Championships including 2nd place in the 2nd race.The team goals for Jump N Jive are to be in the top 3 in the Junior category, Charlie is very keen to prove himself and he is training 3 times a week, a star of the future!

Skier: Toby Duggan aged 15 is a student from Burnham on Sea in Somerset. Toby is returning to ski racing after breaking is back in a skiing fall last year. Toby learnt to ski at Middlemoor Water Park when he was 7 years old. Toby says his best racing experience was the Weston Super Mare regional race last year when he returned to racing after breaking his back earlier in the year.

Driver: Steve Cox aged 49 is a water ski coach from Burnham on Sea in Somerset. Steve has been skiing and driving since 1981 when he was teaching the Navy in Gibraltar. Steve agrees with Toby and says his best racing experience was the Weston Super Mare regional race last year when Toby returned to racing after breaking his back earlier in the year.

Observer: Steve Bird aged 41 is a builder from Burnham on Sea in Somerset. Steve has been observing for over 20 years and sometimes fi nds it diffi cult to ski following an accident when he was run over by another boat.

The Lions have been racing as a team for 3 years and this year have introduced a new F1 boat.The Lions have achieved 5 British titles between Toby and Grace and are looking forward to the challenges this year will bring.The team goals are to be selected for the British team to race in the World Championships in Australia.

Skier: Jake Frame aged 17 is a student from Kent. Jake is the current British National Junior Champion and this will be his last year of skiing in the junior category. In 2010 he moved up from a F2 boat to his current Cyclone Invader #18 HOTSHOT twin rig with 2 x 260 HP Mercury offshore outboard motors. In the 2011 season Jake will also be skiing behind #8 Cyclone Racing using the inboard powered boat in his preparation for the Australian World titles which he hopes to be selected to race as junior boy for Team GB.

Driver: Barry Frame (#18 Hotshot) aged 62 is a company director from High Halstow in Kent. Barry says he started driving ‘very slowly’ and has now been driving for 20 years. His best racing experience was coming 3rd in Long Beach World Championships in 2003.

Driver: Martin McLaughlin(#8 Cyclone Racing) is a boat builder from Rochester in Kent. Martin has been driving since he retired from skiing in 1990 and started his skiing career at the Varne boat club in Kent. Martin says his best racing experience was winning Giro Del Lario twice and winning round 4 of the European championships in Spain in 2010.

Observer: Simon Faulkner aged 35 is a transport manager from Ruchester in Kent. Simon started observing when he stopped skiing and has been involved in the sport for 16 years. Simon says his best racing experience was the World Championships in Lake Mead in 2001.

The team goals for team Cyclone Racing is to be selected to race in the World Championships being hosted in Australia in September, this year.

Robyn’s god father suggested that she should race in the Lyme Regis national in 2009 and she skied with his team and loved it. Robyn’s dad drives for her in both the boats she skis behind. Robyn is the Bronze British Champion in the Brit Kids A category and is moving up to the Brit Kids B category this year. Her best racing experience was skiing in the Diamond race in Belgium in 2010.

Skier: Samantha Clark aged 13 is a student from Uckfi eld, East Sussex. Sam has been skiing since she was 4 years old. Sam’s parents have been ski racers for many, many years. They taught Sam to ski and are still her crew today. Sam had a nasty fall in Hunstanton in 2010 and broke her cheekbone so she missed a chunk of races in the 2010 national series, but she fought back in Brixham and then went onto Spain. Sam says her best racing experience was winning the European Championships Brit Kids A category in Spain in 2010.

Driver: Gary Clark aged 48 is a property landlord from Uckfi eld, East Sussex. Gary has been driving boats for over 30 years and he started racing when he drove for Julie (Sam’s mum) in club and regional races in the late 70’s. Before that he used to ski behind a 15’ Fletcher with a 135 Evinrude. Gary says his best racing experience was driving for Julie for many years and seeing Sam improve race by race.

Observer: Julie Clark is a Customer Service Manager for a large insurance company and lives in Uckfi eld, East Sussex. Julie has been observing in competition since 2007 and has always been Sam’s observer since she fi rst learnt to ski and this continued when she started competing. Julie says her best racing experience was seeing Sam on top of the podium at the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

The Irresistible Ski Race team have been racing as a team since 2007 and they have achieved a gold in the European Championships, British Champion runner up 2008/09 and European Cup runner up in 2008. Club champion in 2009.When asked what they enjoyed most they said travelling as a family around the country and Europe in their camper van and meeting up with friends and the close competition every week.The team goals for 2011 are ensuring sam settles in to Brit Kids B following her successes in Brit Kids A.

Skier: Nadia Jay Mersey aged 13 is a student at Stoke Newington School and lives in Islington in London. Nadia started skiing at her home club with her family when she was only 4 years old, her mum Julia taught her how to ski just as her Nan and Granddad taught her. Nadia says her best race was when she came 3rd in her fi rst ever European race in Eguzon France, on her fi rst race ski.

Driver: Simon Smith aged 46 is a furniture manufacturer and upholsterer from Hornchurch in Essex. Simon started skiing, then observing when his children took over the skiing and then onto driving. He has been driving competitively for 6 years.

Observer: James Smith aged 21 from Hornchurch in Essex. James is a paint mixer and says he got dragged into the sport! James has been observing for 3 years and his best racing experience was observing for Sam Clapson in the Europeans in Eguzon in France.

The team have been racing together for 2 years and their goals for 2011 are to get a few podium positions.

Skier: Georgina Robinson aged 15 is a student from Newmarket. Georgina has been skiing for 2 years and learnt to ski in Hunstanton with her family. Georgina says her best racing experience was skiing in the European Championships in Spain in 2010.

Driver: James Robinson aged 46 is an engineer from Cambridgeshire. James has been driving for 6 years and started when he drove for his son Harvey Robinson ( F1) in the Hunstanton club races. James says his best racing experience was winning F2 in the Hunstanton National race in 2010.

Observer: Simon Gale aged 52 is a tennis court builder from Newmarket. Simon has been observing for 5 years and he started when he offered to help get Ash Cooper fi t for the world championships in 2005, his back still hurts now, he says. Simon says his best racing experience was taking part in a major competition with equipment that works!

This is the fi rst season that the On A Budget team will compete together.When asked what they enjoyed most about ski racing they said ‘we enjoy having friendly competition with great friends.’The team goals for On A Budget for 2011 are to compete to the best of their ability.

Skier: Grace Cox aged 12 is a student at Holy Trinity in Kidderminster. Grace learnt to ski on her Dad’s lake at Middlemoor Water park when she was only 5 years old. Grace says her best experience was winning the national championships in 2010.

Driver: Steve Cox aged 49 is a water-ski instructor from Burnham on Sea. Steve has been skiing and driving since 1981 when he was teaching the navy in Gibraltar. Steve says his best experiences are seeing the children’s faces after winning a race but this is also his worst experience if they lose!

Observer: Steve Bird aged 41 is a builder from Burnham on Sea and has been observing for 20 years. Steve now fi nds it diffi cult to ski after he was run over by another boat. Steve’s best racing experience was touching 100mph in Las Vegas, he says ‘ I only observed, but OMG!’

The Lions have been racing as a team for 4 years and have achieved 5 British titles between Grace and Toby.The team enjoy racing as it is a family sport that really excites all of the them.The team’s goals for 2011 are to win the British Championships for a 3rd year.

Skier: Lee Holland aged 11 is from Brentwood in Essex and started skiing with his family around 3 years ago and completed his fi rst club race a week after learning to ski on one ski. Lee fi nished the race and came 1st on a slalom ski with hands in front!Lee says his best racing experience was his 1st Diamond Race in Belgium where he came 1st in Euro Kids A and picked up his fi rst golden hanger, hopefully the fi rst of many!

Driver: Derren Estall aged 40 works in transport logistics and is from Essex. Derren has been driving boats since 1983 and started racing when he bought his very fi rst race boat and decided to race competitively. Derren says his best racing experience was the 2009 World Championships in Belgium.

Observer: Martin Brooks aged 48 is a car detailer from London. Martin has been observing for over 18 years and started ski racing 36 years ago with his family at Stone Water Sports Club. Martin says his best racing experience was taking part in the Catalina Water Ski Race and all 5 World Championships.

This will be the 2nd year that Team Brooksy have raced together in Brit Kids A. Lee and the team achieved 2nd place in the British Championships in 2010 and 1st place in the Diamond Race in Belgium.The Brooksy team say they enjoy the thrill and excitement of the race and Lee also enjoyed the Karl Brooks training camp in Belgium in 2010 with other ski racers and great coaches.

Team Brooksy goals for 2011 are to win!
