WHAT DOES “AND SUCH” MEAN?

a. And things of this kind.b. And weird things.

«We need parts of India! We can't let the French get to them first»

«But how??»

«Indirect rule! We've done it so much. I thought it would be obvious John seriously get your head in the game…»

Although now the British were gaining interest, the French were beginning to also trade with India. India also had the exact resources the British needed, such cotton and opium. It was a "might as well!" situation.

What does “GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME” mean?

a. Stop working and start thinking playing games and having fun.b. Concentrate yourself and put all your energy in something.

WHAT DOES “MIGHT AS WELL” MEAN?

a. You should do something although it’s wrong and dangerous. b. You should do something because it’s the best option.

«We have stuff, to TRADE!!»

A big part of the colonization of India was the East Indian Trading Company. They had political and power of trade all over the east side of India after the Mughals' previous rule began to diminish.

«We don't need to be growing cotton, we need food!»

«Yeah but we need cotton though!»

Then Britain began controlling the people, they began making their move for further conquest of India, but the people got angry.

What does “MAKE A MOVE” mean?

a. Work out and do lots of sport.b. Start a process to achieve a goal.

Activity 5. Now it’s your turn! At home, you and your classmates try to find some English idioms (min. 3 max. 5) that are useful for this historical situation, write them in the box below and then explain their meaning to the class.

«You've overstepped your bounds, you need to leave!»

«Oh dang, this did not work out as planned…»

They did not want to change religions, or go by the way the British imposed on them, forcing their "ideal" way of living and their systems. They treated the people badly, and now they were only allowed to trade with the British.

What does “OVERSTEP BOUNDS” mean?

a. Go beyond what is proper or allowed.b. Start a process to achieve a goal.

In this case, what is “OH DANG” used for?

a. It’s used to express happiness and satisfaction.b. It’s used to express anger and frustration.

Basically, the Indians (sepoys) rebelled after being treated badly for so long, and they began attacking the English settlers. The East India Trading Company was wrecked and the British were forced to leave.
