“British Airways is aiming to set new industry standards in customer service and innovation, deliver the best financial performance and evolve from being an airline to world travel business with the flexibility to stretch its brand in new business areas”

British Airways can trace its origins back to the birth of civil aviation, the pioneering days following World War I. In the 90 years that have passed since the world's first schedule air service on 25 August 1919, air travel has changed beyond all recognition. Each decade saw new developments and challenges, which shaped the path for the future, Take a look at the different eras of air travel, to see how British Airways became the airline it is today.(Information from www.britishairways.com/ )

Design Brief: Design a product that will prolong the existing brand image of British Airways and which will help the brand expand into new business areas.Design Specification: 1) The product and packaging must maintain the British Airways brand integrity 2) The product must keep within/exceed the standards of British Airways to

enhance its sale3) The product should also have an awareness of sustainability and the effect that

it would have on the environment 4) The product should be able to withstand regular use and weather resistant5) The product should be robust enough to withstand a reasonable amount

pressure and it should encourage adventure, travelling and exploration of the world

6) The product should be ergonomically designed so that it is comfortable for the user

7) The brand logo must be clearly displaced on the product and packaging Project Outcomes- Must create a 3D model of the final design proposal- Must create a printed 2D element - An A0 (118.9cmx84.1cm) display board explaining and demonstrating the product outcome

[30 marks available]20% of your AS grade10% of your A2 grade

This project offers you the opportunity to select a brand of your choice and develop your own design brief. The marks in this project are awarded for your design and development skills. You must prove that you can respond creatively and adventurously to a design brief.

Your design project will be marked based on your skills in these two areas:E. Design and development [18 marks]F. Communication [12 marks]

Your completed design portfolio must be submitted as a 1st draft by an agreed deadline. Once submitted it will be marked and you will be given some editing and improvement time before a final submission deadline. Your work MUST be handed in on all agreed deadlines or you will be given an automatic ‘C2’ on the ICARIS system. Extensions will only be given under extenuating circumstances and will be agreed in negotiation with your teacher, parents and head of year.

You should make every effort to demonstrate your ability to present work in a highly graphical and attractive nature. ICT will help make your work look more professional.

British airways – child suitcase like the trunky - Design 1 – plane (the shape not working) vote

3 – this was nice idea keeping with the ‘airways’ theme but wings could be problem.

- Design 2 - extra bags attachments – expansion bag areas – votes 4 – this could

prove practical to offer children access to their things when on the plane.

- Design 3 – British! Taxi, vote 1 like the British influence

- Design 4 – car ambulance remote controllable – tougher wheels - vote 2 the fun element of

kids! 2 votes - Design 5 – plane again seat (the shape not

working) no votes – other agreed that this was a difficult shape.

- Design 6 – train as the shape seemed better. No votes

- Other comments: Check on board luggage sizes limits, is this hand luggage or a main case

for the hold.

SFeedback collected showed me that some people were not happy with the design of the wheels as first drawn up. They seem more non-resistance to a big mass compared with other wheels that were made out of a more suitable and rigid material that could withstand more mass.

Using this feedback I decided to design a more stable and rigid shape which would be able to withstand more applied pressure. The only problem with this design is that the gaps are more vulnerable to get caught on uneven surfaces, and maybe large stones or rocks. The wheel would become a health hazard if it were to do this during continuous use.

Evidently, I have chosen to return to my original idea for the wheel, which is just a simple spherical shape and a rubber material will be used instead of a rigid plastic to help gain extra grip when travelling along uneven surfaces, making it safer for a child to use.

Original child suitcase sizes are 46 x 20.5 x 31cm, meaning that it qualifies as hand luggage. However, due to my design measurements totalling to just over that, it probably counts as cargo luggage. On the other hand, due to my design having removable storage bags, its means you can pack the essentials and still take them on board a flight or wherever you travel.

As you can see, one of the main features of the suitcase is that children can sit on it and ride it around. The curved shape on the top of the case signifies where the child would sit and the ergonomics are specially designed for this comfort and need.

SFrom hearing my feedback, a lot of people liked my idea of separate luggage bags which could be easily removed at any time. I improved this, by keeping the main shape as a suitcase and designing the front and back so that they can be easily removed using a zip mechanism and then carried by a child, acting as a rucksack. Both rucksacks are suitable sizes to be taken on board as hand luggage, and now that the main case is smaller, it may be allowed on as hand luggage.

. Some people said that it would be more fun if the child could steer it, so I incorporated a wheel shape on the top of the main case which also allows smaller objects to be stored. However, the wheel now looks out of proportion and could be a more complicated feature that just ‘gets in the way’.
