I would like to start by reiterating the two priorities I had highlighted in my last message- first, to grow faster than

the market in each business segment we operate in and the second, to reduce overall cost of operations across the board.

Whilst we have made progress on each of these parameters, there is urgency for us to accelerate and enhance our efforts in

both these areas and I expect each of you to take appropriate actions, every day, to deliver against that.

I have already shared with you that Britannia was ranked as the No.1 Food Brand in the Country in the independent

survey by The Economic Times and AC Neilsen. This is a great honour and an even greater responsibility. This position

can only be maintained if our every day actions contribute to it. To stay No.1, it is imperative that every thing- from the

design to delivery of each SKU is impeccably executed, right through the value chain. Every time an SKU is not available

to a consumer, we lose sale - and when we lose sale, we lose margin and profit for the Company and bonus for us as

individuals. So I would like each of you to remember that you are part of a system that either directly delivers, or enables

the purchase of the right SKU, in the right quality and the right channel, at the right time.

We took another significant step on September 1st when the Britannia Nutrition Foundation organized a symposium on

malnutrition in New Delhi, which was attended by some of the best minds, not just in India, but also from overseas. As you

are aware, the objective of this Foundation is to create not just awareness for an issue that is critical for India’s economic

growth and social development, but also to catalyze and galvanize the right action to address this “silent emergency”

called Malnutrition. Please take time to visit http://www.britannia.co.in/bnf/index.html to find out more about this.

Lastly, I want to emphasize that being in the food business means that we do not waste food - in the factories, in depots,

in retail outlets, or even in our cafeterias or guest houses. As a Company we take significant write offs, either because

products have gone beyond their expiry dates, or break, or are not of the right quality. In a country where approximately

400 million people don’t get enough calories to eat every day this, i.e no wastage, is not an economic imperative but a

moral imperative for each of us. I want each of you to think about this, internalize it and determine a concrete action plan

on how you will take ownership to reduce and eliminate the wastage of food we see in Britannia – from the ingredients

we use to the finished products.

b r i t a n n i a FOCUS 2. What was this year’s theme at the 36th National Competition for Young Managers?

Experts from India and the world over not only raised the issue of the severity of Malnutrition in India, but also proposed solutions to combat the problem at the 2nd Britannia Nutrition Foundation (BNF) Symposium on Sep 1, 2010 in New Delhi.

The Symposium brought together multi-sectoral experts from various domains like Nutritional Science, Medicine, Economics and Development sector in a unique dialogue with policy makers and the Government to drive informed action.

The Malnutrition problem was projected as a ‘Silent Emergency’ in the country that needs to be tackled on priority basis.

Nineteen experts from India and around the world came together to discuss the issues at hand and to share strategies and success stories that are illustrative of working models and action plans.

Speaking at the Inaugural session of the Symposium, Mr. Arun Maira – Member, Planning Commission, Government of India said, “Our children cannot wait any longer”.

Stories from geographies such as Thailand, China, Brazil and Africa were shared to illustrate roadmaps. The Malnutrition problem was understood to be a multi-sectoral problem that requires partnerships between the Public sector, the Private sector and the civil society at large.

3. Which title does Pratyaksha Arora aim to win?

Speaking on the eve of the National Nutrition Week, Ms. Vinita Bali - Chairperson of the Britannia Nutrition Foundation said, “Given the magnitude of the Malnutrition Challenge, it is imperative to drive coordinated action through public private programs. The 2nd BNF Symposium is a powerful and driven way to channelize productive dialogue and create a shared and common agenda, while respecting the diversity of views and experiences to Combat Malnutrition”.

At the press conference held in New Delhi, Dr. Kamala Krishnaswamy - Former Director, National Institute of Nutrition quoted from the NFHS surveys and said that little change has happened in the nutrition profile of the Indian population over the last decade. She referred to Micronutrient Deficiency as Silent Hunger.

Ms. Veena Rao – Former Secretary, Government of India was also present at the event. Ms. Rao - a domain expert on malnutrition - highlighted the long term negative implications of malnutrition on the productivity of populations, and therefore the economic development of a nation. She also brought alive the economic case for addressing malnutrition - the cost effective analysis being extremely favourable.

Dr. Ajai Puri, Global Nutrition Expert spoke about how fortification of foods and diet based methods as strategies are some of the most effective ways to solve malnutrition problems on a mass scale. He highlighted how food fortification was the most prevalent strategy the world over to address micronutrient deficiency.

Dr. Patrick J. Stover – Professor and Director, Division of Nutritional Science, Cornell University and Scientific Advisor to the BNF, expressed his views on how engineering of agricultural and food systems by Governments and other stakeholders can fundamentally help resolve the malnutrition problem.

A key theme that emerged through the symposium was the need for a Development Indicator that goes beyond GDP and includes Nutritional Status of the population amongst others.

Britannia, India’s leading food company created the Britannia Nutrition Foundation with the belief that every child has a Right To Growth and Development which includes not just the Right To Food, but also the Right To Nutrition. The Britannia Nutrition Foundation is also developing a unique initiative following the symposium that aims to involve citizens and organizations into raising awareness of the Malnutrition problem in the country.

Team North initiated KAIZEN in June 2010 under the expert guidance of Mr. Nazre of TELCO with four teams applying the tools and techniques of KAIZEN and 5 S on improvement projects in various areas in manufacturing and S&F.

During the 5 days of the KAIZEN session, the team members passionately observed the shopfloor area/activities and listed down various areas of improvement. Together they chalked down action plan for the counter measures and implemented the same. At the close of the session presentation was made by the Team members alongwith before and after photographs/videos.

Impressed by the excellent work carried out by the KAIZEN teams during the first presentation meeting, Mr Shyam Sundar mooted the idea of extending the KAIZEN activity to Depots. Mr Anil Kumar, QA Manager, along with Mr Shashank Deshpande, RRM, opted to explore the idea in Mundka Depot by implementing the concept of 5S.

Under the guidance of Dilip Kumar, QA Officer, a team of Depot personnel were trained on the 5S techniques, with the idea

KAIZEN means Change for Good.

Kaizen is a way of life assuming that every aspect of our life deserves to be constantly improved.

It aims at improving process and working conditions which reduces wastages and fatigue.

The improvements are done with minimum expenditure.

The entire Kaizen concept is people oriented which impacts the process and is done through cross functional team.

KAIZENwhAt Is KAIZEN?and spirit behind this Japanese methodology

explained in detail. The empowered team implemented their ideas on a selected GAMBA.

Mr V K Pruthi, Mr Anil Kumar and Mr Shashank Deshpande visited the Mundka Depot after a week to inspect and understand the status of the initiative. The godown displayed marked improvements in all aspects of godown operation. The improvements include valuable space saving by 7%, the fool-proof system for following FMFO, overall cleanliness, better housekeeping, techniques for preventing nesting of birds.

Significant change in work culture was noticed and team spirit was clearly visible. The participants had undergone a mental transition. When asked about his experience on the 5S methodology, the loading supervisor remarked, “I enjoyed working in this 5S team. You shall find this godown area in the same condition whenever you visit. Rather, there shall be more improvements in future. We have understood this technique of continuous improvement and we shall extend this to the entire godown”.

Your first impression of Britannia and Britannia Family?

Very warm and good people, perhaps limited in ambition in what Britannia can achieve and what people can contribute. Very good values with individuals and corporate. I hope I do ingratiate myself quickly with the family.

What career did you dream during your childhood?

I wanted to be a cricketer but there was little money in the sports and professional opportunities were limited. My father coaxed me to being an army officer. The day of the services selection board I developed high fever. The officers’ panel rejected me with an advice that I would do better elsewhere than in the army. Class mates in school spoke of IIT as the next big thing to happen in life - a ticket to USA, girlfriends and great professional options in the West. I succeeded in the entrance exam. While filling up the form in the Institute I opted for Electrical Engineering but a few minutes later I was accosted by some seniors and ragged and told that Mechanical Engineering students had more fun on the campus. That is how I became a Mechanical Engineer. In the final year, I wanted to join Maruti as the car revolution was on but as luck would have it I joined Hindustan Lever thinking that the company made mechanical levers.

My father was an army officer and mother hailed from a zamindari family in UP. Along with my two sisters, we grew up all over India. After completing my schooling in Delhi, I joined IIT- Delhi and pursued Mechanical Engineering.

I got married to Chetna in 1992 and we saw each other for the first time on our wedding day. Samiya, my very pretty daughter of 4 years, came to us in 2006 and I now live my life to meet her dreams.

Birthday: 31 July

Most memorable day in your life: The day I was selected to represent Delhi schools in a national cricket event. A few days later I gave my first and only autograph to an unknown fan who confused me with someone who played for the Delhi Ranji team.

Heroes/people who have had an impact on you: Ton Anbeek - a Dutchman, ex boss, coach, friend, party animal with an immeasurable energy level, and a great human being.

Hobbies and Interests: Travelling and catching up with history. Covering ancient Roman empire sites across North Africa was a great experience.

How do you spend weekends? Generally as a couch potato and with friends. Barbecue afternoons are over after I turned vegetarian.

9. How many children did the TigerZor Choco Milk campaign reach? y o u r bytES face to face

What was the biggest leadership challenge that you faced and how did you overcome it?

Transforming a Supply Chain operation for Unilever in Casablanca, North Africa. The challenge was a different culture, language (French as the business language), security concerns, a low skill base, poor infrastructure, low standards and rigid mindsets.

I split my three years there into three parts - the first to understand the issues, culture and to gain insights and acceptance. The second was to spell out what was needed to be done - a bold strategy not limited by constraints and which would challenge mindsets. The third part was to execute the plan, consolidate gains and ensure sustainability of the change.

Bringing in talent was critical. 9/11 led to to the departure of Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian managers from USA/Canada as they were looking for jobs back home. When the government legislated on contract labour usage, it gave me an opportunity to replace a very large section of men workers with women. This change alone tripled my efficiency standards in a factory that was over 40 years old. Operating an all-women factory was a delight. I used the same insight when Unilever set up a factory in Algeria. We started with a substantial workforce of women. TPM/ Kaizen progress was accepted and driven with great passion.

What message you would like to give to budding managers?

Bring passion behind what you do. An ex-boss used to tell me that passion can be seen through the eyes of the person when he/she talks about a particular subject. The second advice I would give is to practice humility. When you accept that you have many shortcomings, you take the first step towards improvement. Lastly, being impatient and constantly disappointed with low standards is a very good virtue.

According to you, what is the recipe for success?

Maintaining a sharp focus on what is to be achieved and going about it relentlessly. Sometimes, though, we win battles but end up losing the war. A plot gets lost when there are too many details and discussions to distract us.

Secondly, having the courage to take bold decisions and following them through.

Lastly, making change a way of working everyday. ‘What got you here will not get you there’.

How do you think leaders should manage failure?

Failures are great opportunities for reconstruction. The focus should be on this aspect rather than what has been lost. It is essential to establish the principle of accountability and communicate with every stakeholder.

If you could rewind and replay your life so far, what would you do differently?

I would be either a cricketer or a writer or a social entrepreneur.

Monthly get-togethers involving birthday celebrations were combined with felicitations to Shabashi Winners and conducted by employees from different functions and not HR alone. This change of format brought out creative thinking in organizing games and quiz programmes while addressing the gathering.

In the last two months, Sairam Krishnamachari from R&D and N K Madhavan, Quality Capability took the honours for conducting the get-togethers with some interesting exercises and quiz programmes for the participants.

N.K. Madhavan, Quality Capability: “It’s a great feeling when I look back and see I was fortunate to be the anchor for the entire programme. We had two creative programmes – a self mind reader test and a short general knowledge quiz.

An at introductory level Yoga Workshop was conducted by Dhyan Foundation, a spiritual NGO deeply committed to the spread of Yoga in its purest form as per the Guru-Shishya tradition, on the 28th of August, 2010 for employees at Region South.

The participants found the programme useful and some of them expressed their interest to attend the free monthly classes organized by the foundation in different parts of Chennai.

It was a also an opportunity to praise South Region for highest ever production, upgradation of Trichy depot to Platinum and second successive India Star and Asia Star awards. More over, it was an wonderful occasion to wish 18 Britannians who were born in the month of August all at once.”

K. Sairam, R&D Centre: “Bringing the joy of celebrations and the party mood in the office room is the key to success! I started the celebration in an informal way by addressing the team and then conducted an activity which required mental concentration and the ability to process information quickly. Following this unusual test, we had the Shabashi Award ceremony and the birthday celebration.

It was nice to see the whole team participate in the programmes, and I am sure Region South will continue this new trend for a long time.”

The quote by Stephen Brennan became our mantra to achieve the magical number of 7000 Tons.

The entire team assembled on first day of July and decided to achieve 7000 T for the month. Although this was a tough target to achieve it was not impossible for the enthusiastic UTC team. As the days passed it appeared as though we were short of missing the target but we reunited, modified our plans and strategies and it was with immense satisfaction that at 11:30 pm on 30th July we achieved 7000T with 3 full shifts still available to us. The month finally closed with 7316T - a new record production figure.

It was a remarkable performance exhibited by all to deliver this production number a celebration with cake and momentos was organized for all workmen, staff, officers and managers.

Expectations always go higher once you deliver, and expectedly, we were asked to deliver 7000+T in August. This time it was considerably more difficult as the days available for production were lesser by 2 but as “No one can know what he can do until he tries”, we overcame our doubts and successfully posted a 7102T result for August 2010.

UTC is now poised to break all previous records because for Team UTC the sky is the limit.

Motto in life: To be known for what I do and not who I am

Your first impression of Britannia and Britannia Family?

My very first impression of Britannia was of a thoroughly professional and strongly process driven company with a very capable leadership team. The Britannia family comes across as very closely knit, down to earth team of people who work very closely with each other to deliver their well planned business targets.

What career did you dream of during childhood?I would often dream of being an army officer or a commando. During my teens, I did aspire to be a doctor.

What was the biggest leadership challenge that you faced and how did you overcome it?Crisis of faith in the face of a problem. I have taught myself to trust the capabilities of seniors, colleagues and subordinates at work, family and friends at home.

What message you would like to give to budding managers?Don’t just do a job. Dream big and chase your dreams. Only that will make you go places.

According to you what is the recipe for success?Sound perspective, good knowledge, thorough planning, timely execution and relentless follow up will help one get to “the right thing at the right time in the right place”.

How do you think leaders should manage failure?Failure is a stepping stone to success. No failures means no risks taken so where is the chance of any new learning ? I see failures as worst that could happen to any one. Things will only get better from there.

If you could rewind and replay your life so far, what would you do differently?I would re-build connections with friends that I have lost touch with. When just memories make me feel so good, being in constant touch would be great.

Life is a process you can't ignore,

It brings opportunities right there on your door.

You are damn lucky that you got human birth,

Use your time as its really worth.

Mere living isn't the meaning of living life,

Leading a meaningful life is enjoying at the cutting edge of knife.

It's a game in which you are the player,

If you want to play, you gotta do it right here.

It's a series of learning lessons,

Though good or bad but yet pleasant.

Whatever you do, whatever you say,

Good works are appreciated and for bad deeds you have to pay.

These practical tips can help you make healthier choices. The two keys to a healthy diet are eating the right amount of food for how active you are and eating a range of foods to make sure you're getting a balanced diet.

A healthy balanced diet contains a variety of types of food, including lots of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods such as whole meal bread and wholegrain cereals; some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and lentils; and some milk and dairy foods.

Base your meals on starchy foodsStarchy foods such as bread, cereals, rice, pasta and potatoes are a really important part of a healthy diet. Try to choose wholegrain varieties of starchy foods whenever you can. Starchy foods should make up about a third of the food we eat. They are a good source of energy and the main source of a range of nutrients in our diet. As well as starch, these foods contain fibre, calcium, iron and B vitamins.

Most of us should eat more starchy foods - try to include at least one starchy food with each of your main meals. You could start the day with a wholegrain breakfast cereal, have a sandwich for lunch, and potatoes, pasta or rice with your evening meal.

Some people think starchy foods are fattening, but they contain less than half the calories of fat. You just need to watch the fats you add when cooking and serving these foods, because this is what increases the calorie content.

b r i t WELLnESS 20. Which individual would like to have Veg Cakes in all flavours?

Wholegrain foods contain more fibre and other nutrients than white or refined starchy foods. We also digest wholegrain foods more slowly so they can help make us feel full for longer. Wholegrain foods include:

• Whole meal and wholegrain bread and chapatti

• Whole-wheat pasta and brown rice

• Wholegrain breakfast cereals

• Whole wheat dalia

eat lots of fruits and vegetaBlesMost people know we should be eating more fruits and vegetables. But most of us still aren't eating enough. Try to eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. It might be easier than you think. You could try adding up your portions during the day.

For example, you could have:

• a glass of juice and a sliced banana with your cereal at breakfast

• a side salad at lunch

• a pear as an afternoon snack

• a portion of peas or other vegetables with your evening meal

You can choose from fresh, frozen, tinned, dried or juiced, but remember potatoes count as a starchy food, not as portions of fruits and vegetables.

eat more fishMost of us should be eating more fish - including a portion of oily fish each week. It's an excellent source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals.

Aim for at least two portions of fish a week, including a portion of oily fish. You can choose from fresh, frozen or canned - but remember that canned and smoked fish can be high in salt.

Some fish are called oily fish because they are rich in certain types of fats, called omega 3 fatty acids, which can help keep our hearts healthy.

Although most of us should be eating more oily fish, women who might have a baby one day should have a maximum of 2 portions of oily fish a week (a portion is about 140g). And 4 is the recommended maximum number of portions for other adults.

Examples of oily fish are salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, fresh tuna, sardines, pilchards and eel.

Examples of white or non-oily fish are haddock, plaice, coley, cod, tinned tuna, skate, hake, shark, swordfish and marlin.

Don't have more than one portion a week of these types of fish. This is because of the high levels of mercury in these fish.

Anyone who regularly eats a lot of fish should try to choose as wide a variety as possible. Eating a wider variety of fish and shellfish will also help reduce the environmental impact.
