It’s a journey we’re familiar with, yet no two journeys are the same. Every new child who is born discovers the world in his or her own little way. Each family makes its own journey. Full of expectation, full of desire, full of love. That’s all you need to live your life. And to choose the right pram.

Let’s start at the beginning.

Once upon a time there was a chip basket.

It’s said that some things are inherited. That we’re born with some characteristics, and that life gives us the rest. Heritage and environment. Maybe that’s true. Every day we strive to further develop the concept that forms the basis of all of our toys, furniture and prams. We can’t rely on a few genes doing the job. Our excellent heritage doesn’t automatically end up in the product. But what’s this heritage that we’re talking about?

It all actually started 127 years ago, with a young man by the name of Ivar Bengtsson. He sold chip baskets of the finest quality. But for Ivar, the finest quality wasn’t enough. He always said that it’s the handle that sells the basket. Ivar put a lot of extra effort into reinforcing the handles of the baskets so that they would be sure to exceed expectations. Many people thought that too much attention was being paid to little things, but those who used Ivar’s chip baskets appreciated the strong handle. He’d shown that he understood the customer better than any of his competitors did. When his sons took over, the company was named BRIO, an acronym for Brothers Ivarsson Osby. The sons continued their father’s keen passion for quality and developed BRIO to create a whole world of truly wonderful things for those first few years in a child’s life. Including prams.

We are proud of our heritage. Which is probably why we’re so deeply passionate in all we do. From the tiniest seam to the softest filling, no detail is left to chance. Some might describe it as an almost unnecessary attention to detail. But we believe that those of you who will be using our prams truly appreciate this. This is why we continue to keep our promise alive. In each pram, right down to each little spoke. For generations.

A little about the history of Swedish design.

We Swedes are known all over the world for our design. We are also famous for our awareness of safety, for paying attention to detail and for never breaking our promises. But we’d never boast about it. That’s the way we are. And maybe that’s why Swedish design has in time taken on a deeper meaning. Now people expect it to be among the best that you can buy for your money. Things quite simply have to keep their promises. Whatever it might take.

Our prams are designed in Sweden. That’s always been the case. But we aren’t best at everything in this country. We wouldn’t release a spoke without being certain that it is of the very highest quality. So we collaborate with those who are best in the world at what they do. But that’s not enough. To be absolutely certain that our products keep our promises, we work together with world-leading suppliers and test institutes. All of this produces a proper pram, as BRIO’s founder Ivar Bengtsson would have said. You can read about everything in this catalogue, about every little detail, about why you should select BRIO in particular. A world-class pram, from Sweden.

How old are we actually?

Our company was founded in 1884. At the time it was mainly all about chip baskets, but as time passed more and more products were added. Mainly toys, even though the odd pram appeared around the turn of the century. You might say that our career in prams started in earnest in 1920, when the BRIO catalogue featured the first prams, which had been imported from Germany. For us, however, there is one important milestone: the day on which we started to manufacture our own prams in our factory at home in Osby in 1935. That’s our real birthday.

Technical developments have come a long way, and more than 70 years have passed of children being born since we started to produce prams in Osby. You might think that the very best prams were being pushed along the city’s avenues a long time ago. But new eras and trends come along all the time. And new children keep being born. As our society is renewed, our insights into life are refined.

Of course, making prams is not the same as manufacturing toys. But for us they have always had one thing in common: attention to every small detail. Our prams, like our toys, must be characterised by clean design, carefully planned functions and genuine quality at all stages. Supported by our heritage and guided by our experience, we test, turn and twist every single item. Now more than ever, we might add. When we make a pram we have to think of everything. Even those little things that wouldn’t occur to you even in your wildest imagination. Because ultimately, it’s these little things that make a difference and that create meaning for you.

One thing that we have learnt down the years is that a family can take on countless forms – but a pram cannot. Families all have slightly different needs, are different people, live in different places and have different cars. Or no car at all. However it looks, a pram must work perfectly in all situations. It must look after the thing you love above all else.

About choosing a pram. And your instinct.

Choosing a pram is like rediscovering yourself. All families have different needs. People live differently, have different expectations. Maybe this is your first child, or your third. We can promise you that all of our prams are good. But you’re the one who decides which one is best. Here we offer a simple guide along the way, it really doesn’t have to be any harder than this. Just browse through these pages and discover our world and all of its opportunities. Step by step, you’ll soon be there. And don’t forget one important little thing – your own instinct.

When will the pram arrive?It’s often difficult to predict exactly when a child will come into the world. While

you’re waiting, take the chance to plan which pram it’s going to be in peace

and quiet. Order the pram in good time so that you are able to familiarise your-

self with it for a while before the birth. But above all so that the new little arrival

doesn’t have to wait for it.

Is this your first child?In that case, your choices are limited to a pram for the initial period or a combi

pram with a carry cot for the whole journey. Otherwise the choice is yours. Our

twin prams are ideal if you have more than one child.

How do you live?Do you live in a confined space? Is the gate wide, but the lift narrow? In that case,

a light, convenient pram for urban living can make a big difference. BRIO Go is

ideal. Or maybe a BRIO Happy combi pram with a swivel chassis. Do you live in

the country or in a detached house, or do you just need a pram that can cope

with slightly tougher terrain? Start by considering a classic Happy. Will you be

walking all the way from the shop to your apartment? Luckily most of our prams

have a generously proportioned shopping basket.

How big is your car?It might be a good idea to take a close look at the size of the pram when it’s

folded away. Do the wheels have to be detached, or will the whole pram fit in

when folded with the extra parts fitted? The best way is to take your car along

and try it out on site.

Do you travel a lot? Then the BRIO Go is probably the solution. Especially if you fly a lot, as we have a

travel bag for the Go to make life easier. Otherwise, many people prefer the BRIO

Sing. Both are based on a system that makes it easy to switch between different

units and also to fit the car seat straight onto the chassis.

Who will be driving it?Just you, or will there be others? Maybe grandma and grandpa? The childminder?

Take a close look at the prams’ various adjustable handles and the height of the

handlebar.

Gravel path, asphalt or a bit of a mix? Where you use the pram is decisive for the choice of model, chassis and wheels.

BRIO Go and BRIO Sing are both supplied with a swivel chassis. Will there be lots

of long walks in the park and adventures on winding paths? For the BRIO Happy

you can choose whichever chassis and wheels you need. Inflated tyres provide

suspension and a smooth ride. EVA wheels are slightly harder, but at the same

time will not puncture. A swivel chassis is better for busy conditions, in both

shops and on the street.

76 years of improvements. Just for you.

Made to last

“It’s the handle that sells the basket,” as our founder Ivar Bengtsson always used to say. He took care to reinforce the handles on the chip baskets that the small company was selling at that time. And in modern pram production, we continue to place great emphasis on precisely the handle. Handles and handlebars are more important than you might think. As well as being ergonomically designed and adjustable so that anyone can push the pram, they must also last. Which is why we subject our handles to almost unnecessarily high loads, well over those required by the EN 1888 standard. Ivar would have been proud.

Good little thinGs

Only the best is good enough for a Swedish pram, even if we have to paddle to the other side of the globe. We use a number of world-leading manufacturers to ensure that every little detail is as good as possible – zips, pushbuttons and velcro, to name a few examples. Velcro is a fantastic Dutch invention that opens up totally new possibilities with its incredible gripping power. Good for trainers, as you probably know, but also an indispensable material for space travel. And our prams, of course. Whichever design we use, the aim is always to ensure that all locking and opening functions are secure, as convenient as possible and practical to use.

soft, airy and dry

The finest there is, next to the finest there is. That’s what we think when we select which fabric will be next to the skin. Which makes cotton the natural choice. All of our fabrics comply with the EU REACH Directive and meet the tough Oeko Tex standards. Our mattresses are soft, self-ventilating and divert moisture away from the baby’s skin. The ventilation holes in the base panel also help to keep it dry.

truly stable

If you want a stable pram, don’t look for one that just feels stable. Look at it this way: when we were small, we learned that we had to stand with our knees bent on the ski slope. The pram must be able to flex both vertically and sideways. This makes it stable, nice to drive and comfortable to ride in. We test drive our prams with extra weights and for extra-long periods on a track that might almost be described as an obstacle course. We only give up after 90,000 obstacles, corresponding to 157 km. All to make sure that they meet the standard requirements and much more besides.

resistant in Many ways

One minute you’re sheltering from a cold hailstorm, the nextminute you’re enjoying an ice cream in the spring sunshine. Our Swedish climate has taught us not to compromise, but to create the perfect balance between different, important qualities. A BRIO pram means that your baby is protected by durable, windproof, water-resistant fabric, which also breathes well.

double sun protection

We love it in Sweden when the sun peeks out. This is whywe have especially strong UV protection for our fabrics, above all in the hood. This is to provide the child with an extra level of protection against the sun, and also to ensure that the fabric keeps its colour for longer. A sun protection factor of UPF 50+ might sound a bit like going indoors, and it is too. The scale represents the Ultraviolet Protection Factor, and our fabrics meet the strictest standards on the scale, and more besides. The child is also protected by the fact that the fabric has a high weave density, is strong and has several layers.

touGh

If the tiniest little fault is found in the brakes, productionis stopped across the board. We conduct continuous random sample tests in accordance with all possible standards. Our own requirements are always much tougher than the standard. Only when we have satisfied them do we feel completely reassured. Many of our prams are fitted with cogwheel brakes, which provide an even, safe braking effect.

Reflectors are a hot topic right now. Many people talk about darkreflectors, so that they can’t be seen. As though reflectors were something to be ashamed of. We work with the world’s leading manufacturer, 3MTM ScotchliteTM, and we can promise you that silver reflectors work better than dark reflectors. With our reflectors you will be seen. Rest assured.

livinG space

We put a lot of work into those little extra considerations. One such factor is space. Because if anyone will want to take home lots of toys, nappies, extra changes of clothes as well as half the shop, it’s the parents. Which is why down the years spacious shopping baskets and lots of smart compartments have appeared.

Even though the Technical Research Institute of Sweden hasapproved every new model of pram down to the smallest detail, we conduct random checks throughout the whole chain. If we find the tiniest defect in a pram, production is stopped until the fault has been rectified.

Will your first pram be a Happy? If so, you’ll have a solid basis on which to build. Happy is a classic pram that has everything you could need. Design it to suit your family, your preferences and needs, and you’ll have a proper pram to use for as long as it’s needed. From the first child to the last nappy change. How is this possible?

First of all, Happy is available as both pram and pushchair. It all depends whether your child is feeling the warmth of the sun for the very first time or has already had his or her first party. The great thing is that Happy is also available as a combi pram. This gives you both pram and pushchair, all in one. If you already know that it’s going to be Happy all the way, a combi pram can be a good idea. The combi pram is just like a pushchair with all of its functions and benefits. You simply add a soft or a hard carry cot for the first few months of the child’s life. The carry cot is easy to lift out and even makes life easier without a lift. Last, but not least: the base: all Happy chassis are designed to meet your needs in all ways possible. They are stable, ergonomic to drive and have nice, gentle suspension that makes the jour-ney comfortable, not least for your child. Many years of careful testing and development have resulted in you being able to choose from three different models, depending on how you live, where you use the pram and who you are. Don’t forget the wheels. You’ll soon be driving away with your new pram.

The height of the handle is adjusted by folding it upwards or downwards (the handle bends like a knee, hence the name) with a single press on the buttons. You have a wide choice of options for the height at which you want to place your hands. It’s even easier to find room in tight spaces when the chassis is folded up. As we said at the start of this section, the Happy is a classic pram on your own terms. It is our gift to free will and those who think differently. Finding it hard to choose? No problem, it’s easy, just take it one step at a time. First choose the type of pram, then a chassis, and then you look at the fabric and colour. Go takes you from grandma to grandpa, into the car, up into the apartment, down the little cobbled street, into the baker’s, through the food shop, all the way to Rome and home again. Without a hint of a grumble. And if the path is a bit slippery, just lock the sensitive swivel wheels to keep on track.

Go is supplied with the seat unit. Add a pram body and a car seat and you have the complete pram. Thanks to the special adapter system, you can switch quickly between pram body, seat unit and car seat. There are lots of different ways to sit down. It depends mostly on age, mood and personality. But it’s also a good idea to vary things. You can easily adjust Go for various reclining positions, footrest positions and with just a click you turn around the whole seat unit to change the child’s direction of travel. Once you’ve fallen asleep, it’s nice to be able to carry on sleeping. Go Infant car seat is easy to attach to and remove from the pram’s chassis, to fit in the car without waking anyone and to put back on the pram again. Brio priMo infant car sEat

Giving their newborn child the best protection is a must for all parents. Primo has been developed to provide the newborn child with reassuring protection and plenty of comfort in the car. Extra pillow rest for small children, soft filling and an integrated sunshade give you that little bit extra. A new feature this year is the extended sunshade that provides better sun protection in the car. Primo is also included in the BRIO Sing Travel System.

funCTIOns. Internal three-point harness adjustable to three heights to suit the child’s size. When the handle is unfolded, Primo has a rocking function that can easily be locked by folding down the handle. The ergonomic handle makes Primo very easy to carry close to the body. BRIO Zento is one of the most flexible combi seats in the market. It fits in most cars and is approved for use with children weighing up to 25 kg as a backward-facing or forward-facing car seat, and also as a booster seat. All parts of the Zento are integrated.

funCTIOns. The car seat has an internal five-point harness that can be easily operated with one hand and is adjustable to four heights. The internal belt has soft, padded shoulder pads. A comfortable neck rest provides extra support for the head. Zento sits firmly in the seat and has been designed to provide both child and driver with good visibility. Detachable, washable fabric.

InsTallaTIOn. The Zento can be installed facing backwards for children weighing 0–25 kg using the car’s three-point seat belt and securing strap. The Zento can be installed facing forwards using the car’s three-point seat belt. Children of 15–18 kg use the seat’s internal belt. When used as a booster seat for children weighing 15–25 kg, both the car seat and the child are secured

When your child is a bit bigger, it’s important to feel that he or she can still travel safely in the car. In the Caro booster seat, your child sits safely and comfortably on a seat with a backrest that has extra side protection for the head.

funCTIOns. The Caro has a detachable back section, which means that the booster seat section can be used separately. The booster seat has detach-able, washable fabrics. Two extendible cup holders.

Good luck with your choice of pram. we promise, whatever you choose, everything will be just fine. Our prams are rigorously tested in accordance with all laws and comply with current regulations. By a comfortable margin. But, just like children, your pram needs your care and love. Then it will keep you company in the adventures yet to come. So how do you do it? easy. even the best sunshade in the world will not last forever. avoid direct sunlight for longer periods, for both the baby’s and the pram’s sake. and even though the fabric can withstand a lot of water, always use the rain cover when it’s raining or snowing. wash and clean the pram according to the advice for each individual pram. and make sure to check that it’s working afterwards. Try to store the pram in a dry place, especially after cleaning it.
