For its 7th season the Cecilian Chamber Series is excited to present five outstanding “World Stage” chamber music performances.
The season begins with the exciting Montrose Trio featuring internationally renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker and former Tokyo String Quartet members Martin Beaver and Clive Greensmith. All are soloists in their own right and together to form an outstanding new trio.
The second concert of the season features the superb foursome of Canadian women that are Cecilia String Quartet. Winners of the Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2010, this is an ensemble that has been on our wish list since the series began seven years ago. It is extra special to be able to present them with Canadian clarinetist extraordinaire James Campbell.
Charismatic Canadian pianist Philip Chiu, the first recipient of the Prix Goyer – Canada’s largest prize for an emerging artist in classical music, will present a program full of stories that includes Canadian music in honor of Canada Music Week.
Then we welcome home Regina born violinist Erika Raum who with her lively temperament and energetic individuality will be joined by Lydia Wong at the piano.
The season ends with the electrifying baroque ensemble from the UK - Red Priest. This unorthodox quartet of virtuoso musicians have made it a mission to make classical music a visual as well as an aural experience.
We are continuing to expand our community connections by presenting, for the first time, special sensory sensitive concerts to add to educational opportunities and the “Music For Your Soul’” program.
Come join us in 2017-18 for an exceptional Cecilian Experience!
Sincerely,
Lore Ruschiensky Artistic and Executive Director

THE MONTROSE TRIO
Friday, September 8, 2017 | 7:30pm
From Tokyo to Montrose Street
Jon Kimura Parker - Piano Clive Greensmith - CelloMartin Beaver - Violin
Formed in 2014, the Montrose Trio is a collaboration stemming from a long and fruitful relationship between internationally renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker and two former members of the Tokyo String Quartet. The Montrose Trio has quickly established a reputation for performances of the highest distinction. All three of the musicians are consummate artists and together present a trio that collectively produces a sound that suggests a much bigger ensemble. In 2015 the Washington Post raved about their “absolutely top-notch music-making, as fine as one could ever expect to hear… they are poised to become one of the top piano trios in the world.”
In 2016-17 the Montrose Trio performed in cities including Cleveland, Portland, Houston and Phoenix.

Hailed for its “powerful” (Chicago Sun-Times) and “dauntingly perfect” (Berliner Zeitung) performances, the Cecilia String Quartet performs for leading presenters around the world. Past engagements include performances at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Konzerthaus, Prague’s Rudolfinum, the Library of Congress, the Buffalo Chamber Music Society, and London’s Wigmore Hall. Prize-winners at several international competitions, including Osaka (2008) and Bordeaux (2010), the Cecilias were awarded First Prize at the 2010 Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC). As enthusiastic educators and mentors the CSQ has developed a series of concerts called Xenia Concerts that were customized to appeal to, and be welcoming of, children on the autism spectrum and their families.
The quartet will be joined by “Canada’s pre-eminent clarinetist and wind soloist”, James Campbell who has performed solo and chamber music concerts in 30 countries in many of the world’s great concert halls.
“While all are soloists in their own right, they play as a unit melding seamlessly with an impeccable sense of ensemble, giving vibrant performances that let each work reveal itself in all it has to say”
– Albuquerque Journal

Raised in Regina, Erika is a distinguished musician who performs regularly abroad as well as throughout her homeland. Known for her “lively temperament, energetic individuality and warm and communicative tone” (Muzsika, Budapest), violinist Erika Raum continues developing a following here in her native country and internationally. Playing professionally since the age of twelve, Ms. Raum quickly rose through the ranks by taking first place at the 1992 Joseph Szigeti International Violin Competition in Budapest as well as the award for best interpretation of a Mozart concerto.
One of Canada’s most sought after collaborative pianists, Lydia Wong appears regularly with the world’s pre-eminent performers in venues across the globe from Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City to London’s Wigmore Hall.

Legends and Stories
Winner of the 2015-2016 Prix Goyer, Canada’s largest prize for an emerging artist in classical music, Philip Chiu is more than a summation of technical and musical abilities. He has become one of Canada’s leading musicians through his infectious love of music and his passion for communication and collaboration. Lauded for the brilliance, colour and sensitivity of his playing, he is particularly noted for his ability to connect with audiences on and off-stage.
An exceedingly sociable pianist, Philip concertizes extensively as soloist and as one of Canada’s most sought-after chamber musicians. He has appeared in recitals with leading musicians of the world stage.
