MOTHER EARTH NEWS magazine has been helping folks live self-reliant, sustainable, meaningful lives for more than 40 years. With an audience of more than 3 million readers worldwide, it is the largest and longest-running environmental lifestyle magazine on the planet.

BRInGInG THe MAGAZIne TO LIFe!

The MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIRS are fun-filled, family-oriented sustainable life-style events that feature dozens of practical, hands-on demonstrations and workshops from the leading authorities on: Renewable Energy, Small-scale Agriculture, Gardening, Green Building, Green Transportation and Natural Health.

In between sessions, attendees enjoy an array of entertainment options, organic local food and beverages, as well as outdoor gardening and livestock demonstrations. Plus, they save on great deals from dozens of regional and national vendors that feature sus-tainable lifestyle products and services, including: books, tools, seeds, crafts, organic foods, clothes, solar gadgets and more!

The inaugural Fair was held in September 2010 at the beautiful Seven Springs Moun-tain Resort southeast of Pittsburgh. More than 9,000 people participated in nearly 200 workshops, countless demonstrations on cheese making, beekeeping, building electric and wood-burning cars, seed saving, preserving and pickling, bread baking, meat pro-cessing, choosing solar power ... the list goes on and on. Many sessions were standing room only and organizers had to relocate some sessions because of the large audiences the topics drew.

Bryan WelchPublisher and editorial director, Ogden Publications

Writer, farmer and media executive Bryan Welch grew up in New Mexico where, at age 9, he began caring for a neighbor’s dairy goats and other livestock. Today, Welch and his family raise cattle, sheep, goats and chickens on their 50-acre farm. All their animals range freely, and the grazing animals are strictly grass-fed. Author of the recent Beautiful and Abundant: Building the World We Want, Welch will inspire audiences to look beyond immediate obstacles and envision a world that is not only sustain-able, but prosperous.

Joel SalatinAmerican farmer, lecturer, and author

Joel Salatin, 53, is a third-generation alternative farmer in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. After returning to his farm full time in 1982, he continued refining and adding to his parents’ ideas. Today, the farm services more than 3,000 families, 10 retail outlets and 50 restaurants. Author of multiple books including The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer, Salatin’s speaking and writing reflect dirt-under-the-fingernails experience punctuated by mischievous humor. He will challenge and em-power audiences to understand crucial issues in the industrial food vs. local, transparent, ecological food system debate.

Dan Chiras, Ph.D.Author and Renewable energy expert

Dan Chiras paid his last electric bill in the June of 1996. He hasn’t given up electricity and modern conveniences, though–he’s turned to the sun and wind to meet his family’s needs.

Chiras is a visiting professor of environmental science at Colorado College and director of The Evergreen Institute in east-central Missouri. He is the author of 30 books, which include The Homeowner’s Guide to Renewable Energy: Achieving Energy Independence Though Wind, Solar and Biomass and Hydropower; The Natural House: A Complete Guide to Healthy, Energy-Efficient, Environmental Homes; Superbia! 31 Ways to Create Sustainable Communities; and EcoKids: Raising Children Who Care for the Earth. He is also the author of hundreds of articles related to renewable energy.

His keynote, The Monkey Trap, will focus on the challenges facing America, which include global climate change and shortages of key energy resources. Chiras will discuss how Americans’ reactions to the chal-lenges that face us will determine whether we will prosper, flounder or fall flat on our faces.

Jeff Hertzberg, M.D., and Zoë FrançoisAuthors of Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day

Their most recent work, Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day, is the result of a quest sparked by Hertzberg’s interests in baking and preventative health. Hertzberg and François will share practical bread-making methods for health-conscious bread-eaters who need homemade options more than anyone else.

A legend in the food movement, Joan Dye Gussow has grown her own food on the banks of the Hudson River for more than 40 years. He serves on the boards of many organizations, including the Thoreau Institute and the Midnight Mission. His work has earned awards from numerous environmental groups, including the California League of Conservation Voters, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Coalition for Clean Air.

Currently, Begley is the co-star of the hit Planet Green series “Living with Ed.” His first book, Living Like Ed, hit the streets nationally in February 2008, and his second book, Ed Begley’s Guide to Sustain-able Living came out in August of 2009.
