NEWSLETTER 3 | MARCH 2021
From the Rector - Fr Michael Twigg OMI
Welcome back to the Confraternity community for the 2021 Confraternity Rugby League Carnival.
At Iona we have been working behind the scenes once again in preparation for your visit during the competition from June 27 to July 2. We have been working hard to begin preparation of the fields and to organise catering and game logistics throughout the competition. This has involved once again focusing on getting staffing arrangements organised and mobilising the large volunteer supporter and networks necessary to host this wonderful Rugby League Carnival.
At Iona we would like to acknowledge the sponsors of the CQ University Confraternity Carnival including Central Queensland University, QISSRL and all of our local sponsors who have come on board with goods and services or donations of cash to support the running of this year’s event. It’s only through the donation of people’s time, services and money that such an event can take place.
In the Bayside we are proud that this comes to fruition as a result of the sense of community that exists here. We would like to acknowledge the community spirit and the support of governments at all levels who have made a contribution to the preparations of the 2021 event. A special thank you to the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club as the major sponsor for Iona College and as the venue for the CQU and QISSRL Dinner.
We thank everyone who will play a role in helping to make the carnival a success and look forward to seeing all competing schools here on June 27 for the opening Mass.
Take Care and God Bless
Fr Michael Twigg OMI (Rector of Iona College)
Welcome back!
Well, we have all had to wait an extra twelve months for the opportunity to come together to share in community and of course to compete. It is fantastic to have every College once again lining up for the belated 41st CQ University Confraternity Carnival.
As was going to be the case last year, we will be welcoming the Open Girls to Confro for the very first time and most welcome they will be! We know
that there will be great support for these ‘pioneers’ as their presence marks the start of a wonderful addition to the Confraternity Carnival, moving forward.
COVID Safety:
Rest assured that Iona College in conjunction with QISSRL and the State Health Department, are completing a detailed and flexible COVID plan for the safety of all who will be in attendance at the carnival. This includes both indoor and outdoor planning for the various aspects of the Carnival. More to follow as we finalise these plans.
Mass and Opening Ceremony:
As was to be the case last year, we are intent on creating a Liturgy that will be engaging, relevant and spirit filled. The Opening Mass and Ceremony are cornerstones for the Carnival’s success and as such we have ensured that all Colleges will have the opportunity to attend, given that there is another ‘significant’ event occurring later in the evening, involving a couple of ‘other’ league teams at Suncorp. Mass will commence at 3:00 pm as QISSRL has already indicated. Both Mass and the Opening Ceremony will most likely conclude by 4:30 pm and teams will be able to leave at this point.
Open Girls’ News:
The Open Girls will be playing their pool games on the Monday and on Tuesday morning. They will commence preliminary finals on Tuesday afternoon and play finals on Thursday, as indicated in the attached timetable of events.
Coach and Manager Meeting (Sunday):
With Mass and the Opening Ceremony commencing earlier, so will the Coach and Manager meeting. The aim is to begin this by 4:45 pm in the Lecture Theatre. There will be light refreshments and finger food available. Again with timing in mind, it is hoped that we will be finished by 6:00 pm.
Captain’s Meeting:
As per usual, there will be a Captain’s meeting, which will take place in the Lecture Theatre at 2:30 pm. More information about what the Captains are to bring with them will be provided in the next newsletter.
General information from Peter Holmes, Convenor
General information, cont.
Team tents and shade areas
As many teams will be travelling considerable distances, we understand the difficulty in bringing bulky items like shade tents, with you. Those teams who are able to bring tents please do, but rest assured Iona will be sourcing tents to ensure that shade cover will be plentiful.
Manly Pool for recovery sessions
Iona College pool will not be available for use during the carnival but the owners of Manly Pool, located at 1 Fairlead Crescent, Manly (only 10 minutes from Iona College), have generously offered several lanes in their complex for teams to use for recovery sessions during the carnival. We thank them for their generosity.
Annual General Meeting (Wednesday):
The AGM will take place at Iona College on Wednesday morning (time TBA) in the Lecture Theatre. Morning Tea will be supplied and there will be more information about this in the next newsletter.
Fellowship Fund:
Iona College would like to thank the many local sponsors who have chosen to support the CQ University Confraternity Carnival with a pledge to assist schools who have been impacted by drought, fires and more recently, flooding, to ensure your participation in the 2021 carnival.
The fund currently sits at $10,000 and is for any carnival expenses you may need assistance to cover (i.e. accommodation, travel costs or meals). If you are interested in accessing this fund, please make contact with Mark Bunting of QISSRL on [email protected] for further details.
Last Minute Accommodation
Please let us know if you still have any accommodation issues. We have been approached by Accor Hotels (in town), Manly Hotel (local) and Queensport Tavern (local) with options if still required.
Lunch pack options
Each year the providing of lunch packs is an option to colleges. Attached is a flyer that gives you the options for team lunches and an order form if you wish to get that piece of organisation out of the way early (this would also help us with planning for the week).
You would have the opportunity to alter your packs if you so desire, to include extra options for either players or coaching staff. We have kept the main lunch packs to $12 whilst ensuring value for money.
Laundering of team kits
Iona College has access to a local laundry service, Pressed Dry Cleaning, who are able to handle the laundering of team kits as has been the case in the past.
The cost for this service is $55 per kit wash (a kit comprises all team jerseys, playing shorts and socks). Teams will be able to drop off their kits to a designated tent near Confro Admin, above Remax Advantage, Field 3. The kits will be available first thing in the morning the day after.
It would be appreciated if ALL TEAMS can bring their own laundry bags. Bags should be easily identifiable, durable and large enough for the team kits.
Please indicate on the form attached if you are considering using this service so that we can plan with the laundry for the best way to manage pick-ups and drop offs.
Food vendors
Iona College have a wide variety of food options available throughout the five days of the Carnival. These include permanent canteens on both sides of the road, the College canteen (underneath the Lecture Theatre - see menu options attached), as well as several coffee and cake options, gluten free options and drink stalls.
A full list of food options will be available closer to the Carnival.
Live Streaming
Once again QISSRL has organised for all games to be live streamed (BMD/Barton’s Field 1 will also have live commentary). A reminder to all managers to have your USB’s or portable hard drives available to hand to the camera towers at each field. You will receive these back immediately after your game.
CQU Confraternity Carnival QISSRL and Iona Dinner
The QISSRL / Iona College Dinner will take place at Wynnum Manly Leagues Club on the Tuesday evening, 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. The dinner is $90 and includes a two-course meal (entrée and main) and three hour drinks package from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. This package includes mid and heavy strength beer, red and white wine and soft drink options.
The night is shaping up nicely with a special guest of the College and local Bayside Icon, Paul Green in attendance.
Please have a look at the attached flyer. As per usual, each College is automatically issued with two tickets but if you are looking to purchase extra tickets, please indicate this on the form attached.
This should be a great evening to catch up and enjoy the facilities of one of the great Brisbane Leagues clubs, which has nearly completed a multi-million dollar redevelopment.
Wynnum Manly will also be providing a courtesy bus for visitors at Iona’s grounds during the Carnival to go back to Wynnum Manly Leagues club or Fielders (linked to Wynnum Manly Leagues) for a drink or something to eat during the day - more about that in the next newsletter.
Struddys at Confro 2021
Struddys, the official Confraternity Carnival merchandise suppliers, will be conveniently located directly above Wynnum Manly Seagulls Field 2. The good people of Struddys will have a wide range of merchandise for sale throughout the carnival. Check out their combo pack options (attached) that are already available for purchase. Their will be much more to come from Struddys as we get closer to the carnival, including links to their website for merch offers for 2021.

We are so grateful to our Intrust Super Cup teams for their generosity in supplying merchandise for these packs and to Smart Teachers and East Coast Engraving for sponsoring the player medallions.
We would also like to express our thanks to four of the NRL clubs who have come on board: The Broncos, Titans, Cowboys and Knights have all agreed to assist us with these packs.
Location map
Getting there
Situated on the edge of Moreton Bay, the suburbs of Wynnum and Manly are less than 20 kms (30 minutes) drive or 45 minutes by train from the Brisbane City Centre. The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast are approximately one hour’s drive away. Brisbane Airport is an easy 20-minute drive from Iona.
If you are requiring transport whilst here in Brisbane, Iona College recommends Murrays Coaches as our Coach company of choice. Please refer to the attached flyer.
Detailed venue map
Included in this newsletter is the initial venue mapping of Iona and the various parking options. Please take the time to look over the attached map and familiarise yourself with fields, parking, administration, Struddys, Oblate Hall, Provence Centre, Lecture Theatre, Green Room, etc.
Parking is extremely important for the duration of this carnival. We want to try and keep as many vehicles as possible off the roads. We have obtained a parking venue for all buses and coaches (which has direct access to fields 4, 5 and 6) and we have multiple locations for car only parking.
NO parking is available in the side streets linking to the College as we have promised local residents uninterrupted access to their properties. As we get closer to the carnival, we would very much appreciate your assistance in informing your spectators of the parking options.
