bringing energy efficiency to a store near you
TRANSCRIPT
For PECI, energy efficiency is both a business
model and the way in which they get their
business done. As a long-standing SDG&E®
vendor, PECI participates in the Energy
Savings Bid program by defining an annual
kWh savings target and then working directly
with commercial grocery and food customers
to achieve this goal. PECI helps these retail
businesses reduce their energy costs by
identifying and implementing smart efficiency
upgrades. The company also helps customers
fund these efforts through available rebate
and incentive programs.
Upgrading Stores to Enhance EfficiencyGroceries and supermarkets use significant
energy to power refrigeration, lighting and
HVAC. PECI helps these facilities identify the
most cost-effective, energy-efficient ways to
upgrade systems via a comprehensive,
customized energy audit. The company uses
its GrocerSmart™ software to assess the audit
findings and calculate the actual energy and
cost savings of suggested retrofits. PECI looks
at both the payback period and available
rebate and incentive programs to help its
customers evaluate the viability of each
recommendation. PECI then helps customers
complete their projects on schedule and on
budget by engaging directly with the contractor
and providing project management support.
As PECI Executive Director Phil Welker sees
it, “We make sure our customers get the right
information at the right time so they can
make the right decisions.” Guy Hansen, SDG&E’s

attests, “PECI realizes each customer is
different and works to deliver long-term
solutions with genuine savings.”
Identifying Smart Funding Strategies During its long history working with SDG&E,
PECI has developed a deep understanding of
SDG&E rebate and other incentive programs.
PECI puts this knowledge to work to help
SDG&E customers take full advantage of the
available programs in order to offset upgrade
project costs. “In addition to our technical
expertise, we also provide comprehensive
knowledge of SDG&E programs and how
customers can use them to pay for the projects
that they are interested in implementing,”
notes Kim DiCello, Field Energy Analyst for
PECI. The results speak for themselves.
“PECI has lowered our cost of energy and
upgraded the store at the same time. They

paperwork,” remarks PECI client Dirk Stump, Vice President
of Stumps Markets.
Leading by ExamplePECI has also undertaken extensive environmental sustainability
efforts in its own corporate operations. The company’s “Green
Team” has implemented successful recycling and composting
programs, as well as employee bike commuting and public
transportation reimbursements. As they strive for carbon
neutrality, PECI has committed to purchasing 100 percent
green power for their main office building and carbon offsets
for all business travel. As a result, PECI’s estimated carbon
emissions per full-time employee are almost a quarter of the
industry average.
Beyond the business possibilities, PECI sees the importance
of sustainability more broadly. PECI Executive Director Welker
summarizes the impact, “We have a strong energy-efficiency
ethic. We have our headquarters in a LEED® Platinum certified
building. We have a state-of-the-art data center that works on
ambient air temperature. We walk the talk.” And that walk has
helped PECI and SDG&E customers save over six million kWh
and $830,000 in energy costs last year, alone.
about SdG&E® Programs
With Energy Savings Bid, large businesses can design their own energy-savings projects for one or multiple sites and propose an incentive amount that could equal up to 100% of the measure costs for the project. The program allows flexibility in project design so that customers can get the most money back.
The Energy-Efficiency Business Rebates program is the easiest way to earn money back on energy-efficient equipment purchases. Earn rebates back on lighting, refrigeration, ventilation, food service and more while also reducing operating costs.
