SDN and NFV Lead to Capex and Opex Savings

“At the close of last year, CenturyLink had virtualized about 60% of its points-of-presence (POPs) with a goal of 100% of those virtualized by the end of 2019. … Once the virtualization efforts are completed in about two years, CenturyLink expects to save more than $200 million a year in capex. … And also, we expect major opex cost savings as a result of this virtualization of the SDN, NFV network builds,“

-- CEO Glenn Post, February 2017.

“AT&T’s stated goal is to virtualize and control more than 75% of the network using software architecture by 2020 via the use of cloud, SDN and NFV technologies.”

– Andre Fuetsch, SVP Architecture & Design AT&T.

“AT&T expects to see opex savings from SDN and NFV in the range of 40% to 50%.”-- Krish Prabhu, President AT&T Labs, June 2016.

Thanks to OCP, we have saved US$2 Billion in infrastructure costs, over the course of 3 years. Last year alone, we saved energy enough to power 80,000 homes . The carbon savings from these energy efficiencies are equal to taking 95,000 cars off the road.”

Intel® Rack Scale Design (RSD) Overview

• Intel® RSD is a logical architecture that disaggregates compute, storage, and network resources

• Introduces the ability to pool these resources for more efficient utilization of assets

• provides the ability to dynamically compose resources based on workload-specific demands from a set of compute, fabric, storage, and management modules that work together to build a wide range of virtual systems

• The design uses four basic pillars:• POD Manager for multi-rack management• Pooled system of compute, network, and

storage resources are composed based on workload requirements

• Pod-wide storage built on Ethernet-connected storage

• A configurable network fabric of hardware, interconnect with cables and backplane, and management software
