THE NEWPORT ART MUSEUM is a place rich with opportunities to learn,

create, share and appreciate art, architecture and history. Our three

buildings are animated with various activities, from studio art classes and

community programs to exhibitions and public lectures. People of all

ages and backgrounds are drawn to our Museum to learn about the art

and artists of our region.

From the outside, our distinctive buildings present very different architectural styles, which

may obscure the fact that our staff works holistically, across departments and disciplines.

This collaborative spirit, within our organization and throughout the community, ensures

that the Museum offers many points of access. All efforts coalesce around a single vision

of providing meaningful and memorable experiences for our diverse constituents.

This summer, we completed a comprehensive survey of our students, members and visitors.

The findings indicate new and exciting possibilities for visitor engagement.

For over one hundred years our Museum has continued to evolve with the times. Listening

and learning from the people who use our Museum keeps us relevant.

To further reinforce the notion of a unified Museum, we are for the first time, incorporating

our newsletter and class catalog into one publication. We hope you’ll discover news ways

to get involved.

REvIvING DURR FREEDLEy: NEWPORT’S FORGOTTEN ARTISTseptember 26, 2015 - January 18, 2016

Indiana-born artist Durr Freedley moved from Paris to Newport in 1930, making it his adopted home until his untimely death in 1938. During his brief time here, Freedley endeared himself to much of the local community, painting portraits for numerous New-

port families and befriending creative forces such as Maud Howe Elliott and John Howard Benson. He served on the Council of the Art Association of New-port — today’s Newport Art Museum — and is perhaps best known locally for his 1933 murals in Newport’s Memorial Chapel of the Seamen’s Church Institute.

But Freedley’s accomplishments stretched far beyond his work on Aquidneck Island. He was a brilliant Harvard graduate — editor of the Lampoon — who had also attended Williams College and the Royal Academy of Art. He was a decorative arts curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he made numerous important contributions, such as the development of

the American Wing. He was an Arts and Crafts artist who tran-sitioned to Art Deco, painting elegant portraits that combined the sensibilities of the early Ital-ian Renaissance, Asian art, and the French Art Deco movement. This exhibition explores the many artistic connections and contributions of Durr Freedley, and includes portraits, draw-ings, ecclesiastical designs and architectural drawings from Newport’s “forgotten” artist. The Newport Art Museum is fortu-nate to own a significant body of work by Freedley — gifts from both Mrs. Hamilton Fish Webster and the John Howard Benson family — and the Museum’s collection of his work will be aug-mented by loans from Harvard’s Fogg Art Museum and Benson family members. An elegant publication on Freedley’s work will also accompany the exhibition, designed by Fisher Press and made possible through the generosity of Elizabeth Prince de Ra-mel. The Museum is grateful for exhibition support from Skinner Auctions and Terrence and Suzanne Murray.

ART LEAGUE OF RHODE ISLAND MEMBERS’ ExHIBITIONseptember 5, 2015 - January 3, 2016

For years, the Art League of Rhode Island and the Newport Art Museum have shared similar missions. Both organizations are passionate about fostering artistic growth among Rhode Island artists, and are dedicated to giving local artists the wider rec-ognition they deserve. With at least twenty-five ALRI members who have had solo exhibitions at the Museum, and numerous Art League artists who are active Newport Art Museum members, collaboration comes naturally.

The ALRI Members’ Exhibition at the Museum is a celebratory exhibit that showcases the exciting work being made by talented artists in the state. Like the similar collaboration in 2006, this fall’s exhibit will bring together a varied body of work from nu-merous contemporary RI artists. Accompanying the exhibition will be programming that includes film exploring the Rhode Island arts community and a presentation on the Rhode Island School of Design’s “STEM to STEAM” initiative.

ELIzABETH DUFFy/BRIAN MILLER: A SERIES OF MINOR MIRACLESseptember 5, 2015 - January 10, 2016

This body of work is a collaboration between sculptor Elizabeth Duffy and photographer Brian Miller. The images and objects on view in the exhibition draw direct inspiration from Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, an iconic 1434 painting that art historians have decoded for centuries, and which initially interested both Duffy and Miller for very different reasons. Miller found particular interest in the work as “a very early exam-ple of the use of optical devices in painting, with the chandelier and the background showing near photographic perfection in it’s rendering.” Duffy, on the other hand, was drawn to Jan van Eyck’s “sense of reverie toward the material world.”

For both of them, however, the image represented a 15th- century approach to domestic harmony, and led them to begin looking for corresponding sym-bols in their own modern lives. Some are direct quotations from the painting, others are more oblique. Through this project, the painting becomes a filter for viewing their life together. While the Arnolfini Portrait has been explored for centuries, its meaning is still essentially the same. The painting features a couple pictured with very specific belongings which signify well-to-do, upper-middle-class life. Miller and Duffy updated some of the symbols to reflect their contemporary life as artists, getting by some 600 years later.

PHOTOGRAPHERS GUILD ExHIBITIONseptember 26, 2015 - January 17, 2016

This annual exhibition showcases photography by members of the Photographers’ Guild of the Newport Art Museum. Experience people, places and things through a variety of lenses.

In 2010 the Museum received the donation of a wonderful stone sculpture by the late Arnold Prince, a former professor at the Rhode Island School of Design and master carver. Having been outside for 35 years, Mother and Child badly needed cleaning. Tayo Heuser, a former student and close friend of Prince’s said “it pained me to see his magnificent carving covered in mold and lichen that further contributed to its deterioration.” Heuser cleaned the sculpture and plans on finding an appropriate sealer. It is gratifying to both Heuser and the Museum that her mentor’s work can now be appreciated by new audiences. Thank you Tayo!

Artist Tiffany Peay has been making beautiful handmade jewelry on-premise in her Tiver-ton Four Corners storefront since 2007, but her self-made story of success begins many years earlier. After receiving a BFA in Met-alsmithing and Glasswork, Peay followed her dreams and moved to New york City, where she eventually launched her own line of jewelry. Originally operating out of her New

york City apartment -- and then her own gallery and showroom -- Peay developed an original moving stone collection for Barneys Ny, and her list of clients grew to include names like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Banana Republic.

Today, Tiffany Peay Jewelry LTD is sold and made exclusively at her storefront. Since setting up shop in town eight years back, Peay has become engaged with the local community, taking time to teach classes in her studio for the Tiverton Art Center, and giving demon-strations for career-day at nearby Dartmouth High School. In 2012, her generosity found its way to the Newport Art Museum, when she

donated jewelry to be auctioned off at the Gala.

“She just radiates enthusiasm,” says Maggie Anderson, Director of Education at the Museum. After meeting at the event, Peay and Anderson began discussing the possibility of devel-oping a metalsmithing class for the Museum’s Coleman Center for Creative Studies. “We didn’t have any jewelry program at the time, and it was such a missed opportunity.”

Peay soon went to work putting the class together, borrowing jewelry kits from Dartmouth High’s art department and lending her own tools to get the program off the ground.

“When Tiffany committed to the Museum, she committed in every single facet: as an artist, as a member, as a donor, and then as an educator,” Anderson says.

According to Peay, she never imagined herself as an instructor, but says she enjoys working outside of her comfort zone, and teaching at the Museum gave her the opportunity to do just that. Now that she’s been sharing her experience as a jeweler and metalsmith for

some years, she finds herself growing more confident in her role as an educator.

“This was the best semester I’ve had. I know that the students always have a good time, and I’m getting better at it as I practice. I’m loving it. It’s really satisfying and fun.”

Peay, with the encouragement of the education department, hopes to eventually expand the metalsmithing program at the Museum, and is confident that she and her fellow Newport Art Museum Con-

temporaries (a new committee focused on “friend-raising”) can rally support. For Peay, a big part of growing the Museum means taking advocacy off of the island, and into her neck of the woods.

”We’re all trying to find ways to really help the Museum. Network-ing, for me, is a big part of that. I’m from this side of the world, and can spread the word to my community, picking up Little Compton and Tiverton and encouraging them to come here. I think it’s a really good fit. I’m a great team player, I love to network, and I love to share the goodness. I’m excited to be here.”
