has become a highly coveted commodity. For countertops, sinks,

and more, soapstone has seized its rightful place as the material

of choice for architects, contractors, interior designers, renovations

specialists, and home owners alike; those with an eye for the

spectacular, and visionaries with a dream of forever.

Perfected Through the Millennia

A witness to the ages, soapstone is a metamorphic rock ranging in

age from 300 to 400 million years. Chemically inert, soapstone

is composed of several minerals including talc, chlorite, dolomite,

quartz, magnesite, mica, pyroxene, amphibole, serpentine, calcite,

and iron oxides. Soapstone’s colours range from grey/black, green/

black, grey, charcoal, black, to dark green.

Its Beauty is Unequalled

Widely recognized as an excellent natural stone alternative to granite

and marble, soapstone’s unique colour palette, coupled with its

artistic veining characteristics, is appreciated for its rustic qualities; while

equally applauded for the ease with which it can be introduced into a

modern design environment. As the name soapstone implies, given its

inherently high talc content, it is soft to the touch (akin to the feeling of dry

soap) yet its strength and durability is legendary.

Soapstone also has a high fusion point, low electrical and thermal

conductivity, superior heat retention, and high lubricating power.

Impervious to most physical damage from invasive liquid spills to scorching

heat from super-heated cookware, soapstone, unlike granite, is essentially

It’s fit for life

At Green Mountain Soapstone we have a wide range of

soapstone sinks available. Whether standard or custom, all of

our soapstone sinks are tongue and groove and guaranteed leak

resistant for life. We’ll craft single, double, or triple bowl sinks,

each style sized for standard drain baskets; and where possible

sink bottoms are sloped to the drain. Drain board grooves are also

available. Moreover, the nonporous nature of soapstone means a

sink that is easy to clean; and since there is no ledge in front of the

sink, they’re a pleasure to use. They’re perfect for large pans, cookie

sheets, serving trays, and much more.

Note: For faucet installation purposes it is important to ensure that

there is adequate space to access the faucet behind the sink.

Soapstone

ENHANCING ITS NATURAL COLOUR

Mineral Oil

Unlike marble and granite, soapstone is nonporous, and as

such it does not need to be sealed. Yet, applying mineral oil

to the surface of the soapstone will not only enhance its overall

appearance, it will encourage its natural darkening and will ensure

that the stone will darken evenly.

Applying mineral oil too little or in excess will not damage soapstone.

To effectively apply mineral oil, the oiling cloth should be placed in a

plastic resealable bag between uses. This will allow the mineral oil

to be readily absorbed for easy and even application. Removing all

of the excess oil from the cloth will keep the soapstone product from

feeling slick to the touch.

Once the last application begins to fade away, another coat can be

applied. When soapstone is oiled for the first time the stone will

become significantly darker. After the first application of mineral oil

the soapstone will begin to lighten again. At that point mineral oil can

be reapplied.

After each application the soapstone product will retain the mineral

oil for a longer period of time. After a period of six to eight months of

mineral oil applications, the soapstone will remain permanently dark.

Linseed Oil / Beeswax

A combination of linseed oil and beeswax will also enhance the

deep rich colour of soapstone, and will reduce the need for

multiple applications of mineral oil. Simply apply linseed oil and

beeswax with a cloth*, allow it to set for a few hours, and then

wipe dry. Usually, one application is enough. However, should the

soapstone begin to lighten in various areas, linseed oil and beeswax

can be reapplied. Further applications of linseed oil and beeswax will

only be needed if the surface application wears out over time.

*The cloths that have been used to apply the linseed oil and beeswax should be allowed to dry completely on a non-flammable surface and then disposed of.

Soapstone

PRESERVING ITS BEAUTY AND PERFORMANCE

Cleaning soapstone is a simple process. As chemicals and acids

will not cause any damage to soapstone, any common household

cleaner can be used. However, using these types of cleaning products

will have a tendency to remove the mineral oil or linseed oil/beeswax.

Soap and water alone can keep your soapstone clean, and it will not

strip the mineral oil or linseed oil/beeswax from the surface of the

soapstone.

Because soapstone contains talc, any scratches can be quickly and

easily removed without any damage by sanding the area and (or)

reapplying mineral oil. Should there be a deep scratch, simply apply

a small piece of 120 grit sandpaper to the area in a circular motion

until the scratch has almost disappeared. Then, 220 grit sandpaper

and water can be used to sand the moistened area to remove any

remaining signs of scratching. With subsequent applications of mineral

oil the soapstone’s original colour will return within a few days.

STEP 1 Request a quote for the particular soapstone product(s) (countertop / sink).

STEP 2

Fax or email a layout of the soapstone product(s) with dimensions and details. Please ensure that you name the customer in order to avoid the possibility of Green Mountain Soapstone inadvertently providing your customer with a direct quotation in the event that your customer calls us. This is your customer, and we will not solicit that customer’s business directly or indirectly; nor will we provide a price should they contact us by any means.

STEP 3 Green Mountain Soapstone provides you with a quotation.

STEP 4 Should your customer wish to proceed, you may then have your customer contact Green Mountain Soapstone to set up a time to view the product(s) and select the colours.

STEP 5 Your customer will receive a sample and sign off for the desired colour.

STEP 6

Green Mountain Soapstone will call you to establish an approximate template date and send you the related paperwork outlining all relevant detail.

STEP 7 Terms are 50% down and 50% upon completion.

STEP 8

Two to three days prior to the template date, Green Mountain Soapstone will confirm a time for a representative of your firm and (or) your customer.

STEP 9

Green Mountain Soapstone will proceed with the installation of the soapstone product(s) within 10 business days from the template date.

STEP 10

The soapstone product(s) will be waxed or oiled, and your customer will receive the informational package with a mineral oil and (or) linseed oil/beeswax sample.
