The Difference between a Category and a Playlist

ategories and Playlists are two powerful tools with which to teach your child, but what's the difference between the two?

It’s important to differentiate between Categories and Playlists, because knowing and understanding their fundamental uniqueness will be key to maximizing your Little Reader LITE.

What are Categories?

Categories are word groups that you have organized for your child - perhaps with a common theme, lesson or phonic you want to teach. When you export a Category file, you will end up creating a package full of words, images, and other media that you can import or swap with other parents later on.

What are Playlists?

Playlists are selections of custom-ordered Categories and words. Playlists can be created from Category or word files and given a specific order of playback you want. The playback settings are usually pre-set, and playing Playlists will evoke certain saved settings whenever you play them.

When you have chosen this option, you can also choose to check the “Only ESC key” option (on the right of the Auto-Forward option). Pointer Size

There are 5 sizes available for pointers (five being the largest). Pointer Color

Use this to choose the color of the pointer. NOTE: The bigger the contrast between the pointer and the background color, the more effective it will be in drawing your child’s attention. Extra click for Pronunciation

This function requires you to click once to play the pronunciation on a slide. This means that you will know when to start moving your mouse down the word, along with the pronunciation. NOTE: You will also have to click again for the pronunciation to be played alongside the picture. However, if there is picture audio, it will play automatically alongside the picture (without requiring you to click). Auto-start at word beginning

When you enable this function, your pointer is automatically positioned underneath the first letter of the word for each slide. This will make your job easier in directing your child’s attention to the word. Show pointer for pictures

When you enable this function, your pointer will remain on the screen even when the image slide is on, so you can draw your child’s attention to the main object in the image (e.g. cat). However, for images in Categories like colors or nursery rhymes, you may want to disable this function so that your pointer will disappear when the picture slide is on, but will reappear when the word slide comes up.

Other Playback Settings

Number of pics/vids shown

This playback option allows you to change the number of pictures and videos that is shown (therefore is only available when your playback mode includes media like pictures). For example if you change the number to 3, then three pictures will be shown with a single word, one after the other, during playback. Alternatively, you can also choose “All” under the option, to playback the number of pictures depending on how many pictures that have been added under a word. The number of pics/vids shown function is particularly useful if you want to emphasize the meaning of the word, by showing different images of the same thing. NOTE: If the particular word does not have that number of images added under it, it will repeat the same image(s) until it matches the number that you have chosen.

How to Change the Number of pics/vids Shown:

1. Click on the Playback button. 2. In the right hand column, find the Number of pics/vids shown

panel and click on the arrow beside it.

The Report Bug feature involves 3 simple steps, outlined in the window that pops up. First, choose whether or not you wish to take a screenshot of your Little Reader LITE, and then click “Create System Report”.

Note: BrillKids highly recommends taking a screenshot, as it can help us isolate the problem.

A Windows Explorer window will come up containing the System Report File, as shown below.

Leave the window open and proceed back to Little Reader LITE. Click on Report Bug and you will be taken to the Report Bug form. Follow the instructions therein and attach the System Report file, then click Post.
