WRIGHT – EDLIN SHIELD This Perpetual Shield was created in recognition of the fantastic 1961-62 A-Grade Grand Final match between Bentleigh
Methodists (now Bentleigh Uniting) and Brighton Union, and is played for every year by the highest-placed elevens from
the two clubs. Brighton Union had won six consecutive Premierships in the Brighton District Cricket Association and
had joined the City of Moorabbin Cricket Association (CMCA) and was beaten by Bentleigh Methodist in the grand final
after leading on the first innings in a game played in true sporting fashion.
The late Wally Wright (Bentleigh Methodist) joined his club as first eleven scorer in 1950 and also scored for the juniors
in the morning. He was confined to a wheelchair but despite this was active at both club level and the CMCA.
Wally wore his club cap everywhere and had his wheelchair painted in the club’s maroon and gold colours and in 1962
the club presented him with a new wheelchair.
The late Frank Edlin (Brighton Union) joined Union in 1936, and was deaf and dumb and thus was nick-named
“dummy”. He retired in 1958 due to illness. He played mainly in the seconds and thirds, also captained sides and had a
remarkable ability to place fields and make bowling changes although he could not speak.
Frank played 221 games, 199 of these consecutively, and made over 6,000 runs and took over 800 wickets, with his best
bowling effort 8/44 and was Club Champion on three occasions.
Union’s first victory for the shield came in season 1967-68 played on Australia Day holiday weekend.
The matches over the years had been highlighted by keen competition and fiery incidents and this particular year was no
exception as Bentleigh Methodist players invaded the ground part way through their innings. Barracking was particularly
vocal during the entire match.
Reed (Bentleigh Methodist) won the toss and sent Union in to bat. Opener Stephen Porter was felled by a sharply rising
ball and did not continue his innings. Dogged and sometimes slow batting took the score to 4/94 at tea and at the
compulsory closure on the first day Union had reached 7/175.
Top scorers were Simon Russell 43 not out, Bill Ould 32, Graham Hamilton 31, Paul Donohue 23, and Howard Leigh
Watkin 20.
Methodists’ innings began disastrously to the fiery bowling of Jeff Hayes and Gary O’Mahony and were soon 4/22 and
they were eventually dismissed for 104 with Jeff Hayes capturing 4/37, Gary O’Mahony 2/22 and Graham Hamilton 2/27.

PITT – GOROZIDIS SHIELD
The Pitt-Gorozidis Shield was donated by John Jones (East Sandringham) and Noel Pullen for annual matches between
these two proud clubs. TheShield is named in honour of East Sandringham legend Kim Pitt and Brighton Union great
Con Gorozidis, widely considered to be two of the outstanding players in CMCA history. It was first competed for in
season 1999-2000.
Con Gorozidis
Con joined the club in 1974 as a 13 year old and from the earliest days was it was obvious he was an immensely talented
player. At the age of 14 he displayed great maturity to steer the 4th XI to victory, scoring 80 in a grand final that was
slipping away, and rapidly progressed to the 1st XI, where he soon became an automatic selection.
An intimidating opening bowler, some of Con’s greatest moments have been with the ball – a marathon 9/140 off 54
overs in the 1982-83 grand final against arch-rivals East Sandringham (Union won by 2 runs) and 10/68 against Hampton
United in a remarkable tied game in 1990-91. Throughout the 1990-91 season, he and Michael Cordwell were a
devastating new-ball combination, taking a combined 100 wickets to virtually bowl Union to the premiership.
In the 1992-93 semi-final against Bentleigh Uniting Con was dismissed cheaply but was so determined to contribute he
bowled 44 overs unchanged at one end, taking 5/59, and was so exhausted at the end he virtually had to be carried
off. Brighton Union coach Alex Gerdan described him as “the ultimate competitor”. His 630 1st XI wickets is the
highest tally for the club that can be documented.
As well as being a great bowler, Con has been a spectacular and prolific batsman. His six-hitting feats at Hurlingham
Park are legendary, with some enormous hits sailing over 150 metres into the adjacent kindergarten and blocks of flats.
His best year with the bat was 1983-84, when he made 842 runs and took 38 wickets but was struck down with a serious
knee injury at football training and missed out on playing in back-to-back premiership wins. While age and injury
curtailed his bowling in the late 1990s, Con continued to turn it on with the bat. In Rd 1 of the 2003-04 season he
smashed a typically brutal 130 before being runout attempting an ambitious second run. Coming in at 3/2, he made 117
and in true Con style had not picked up a bat since the end of the previous season. In a rain-shortened semi-final against
Omega in 2005-06, he blasted a brilliant match-winning 52 in only 19 balls (6 sixes, including 2 that went over the
Bricker Pavilion into the athletics track behind). In a great career Con has made 11 centuries in the 1st XI, scored over
10,500 1st XI runs (nearly double the next highest 1st XI runs scorer), and has played 328 1st XI games, easily a club
record.
A Life-member, 16 time Senior Club Champion, 5 times a premiership player, dual premiership captain/coach, winner of
CMCA batting and bowling awards, 3 times winner of the Knights Sportsgoods Award as CMCA player of the year, the
man known throughout the CMCA as “The Champ” has done it all. Club President Noel Pullen commented “There will
never be another one as good as him in the parks in a hundred years”. “Without doubt Con could have played cricket at
first-class level had he wished” former Test Cricketer Julien Wiener.

Secretary’s Annual Report for Season 2011-12
With the loss of Hurlingham Park number 1 oval for the season the Committee were prepared for a difficult
time, but as I present the 105th
Annual Report we have recently been through the most disappointing season in
my experience. The club’s overall onfield performance was terrible and off field we struggled to get
involvement necessary to maintain good spirit.
Thank you to the Committee for their efforts this season and I know the new members on the Committee are
keen to make a greater contribution next season.
Our 1st XI performances were inconsistent but it was not until late in the season that a finals campaign was not
on the agenda. There were some excellent personal performances, in particular the outstanding century before
tea by Aaron Gregory against Bentleigh Uniting. Congratulations to Aaron for winning the Club Championship
and along with Darian Kuzma for being selected in the Knights Longmuir team of the year for the second
consecutive year. The 166 run second wicket partnership by Darian (78) and Michael Cove (80) against Le
Page Park in Round 1 was another highlight.
Unfortunately the lower elevens did not have very good seasons. The withdrawal of the 4th
XI due to lack of
player numbers was disappointing and consequently some players had to be selected in grades higher than they
might have normally.
Thank you to the selectors, in particular Chairman Michael Cove for their persistence under difficult
circumstances.
To Coach Ross Veitch and Team Captains Darian Kuzma and Brian McDonough thank you for your efforts.
The 3rd
XI Captaincy was shared depending on availability but thank you in particular to Tony Grant, Paul
Foster and John Hammer for your help. John and Tony’s efforts in bringing colleagues and mates to play was
magnificent when player numbers were thin.
I appeal to all members to do what they can to bring new recruits to the club and I can assure you the Committee
will be working tirelessly in recruiting in the off season.
Thanks to our valued volunteers, Simon Russell, Rob Robinson and Les Jason for their help at training and on
match day.
This season the club fielded U-18s, U-14s, U-12s plus a combined U-12 modified team in conjuction with
Hampton CC. The U-18s won only two matches and lacked the bowling depth to restrict sides. The U-14s had
an outstanding season, reaching the U-14A Twilight grand final and putting in a valiant effort to finish runners-
up to a very strong McKinnon lineup. Austin Heldt had superb year and was selected in the SE Bayside
Breakers U-14 representative team, which won the U-14 Regional championship. The U-12s were competitive,
pushed both grand-finalists hard in their matches and finished 6th
, with Joshy Paterson having a fine season and
representing CMCA in the Josh Browne Plate tournament.
Our thanks to team managers Michael Cove, Brian McDonough, Philip Arnold, Chris Dimos and Niki Gaal for
their valuable help with the junior teams.
Socially the highlight for season was the major function held at our Sponsor the Half Moon Hotel in January.
David Martin’s band “The Big Kahuna” provided wonderful entertainment on the night.
The I-Phone Shuffle and the Golf Day were also enjoyed by those who attended.
Our Financial position remains sound despite income taking a hit at the bar and the kiosk. A big thank you to
our principal sponsors the Half Moon Hotel and the Bendigo Bank without whose support we would be unable
to maintain a favourable financial position. I encourage all members to give unqualified support to our
sponsors.
We are doing what we can to keep pace with technological changes with our excellent web site well maintained
by webmaster Julian Marwick. We have also set up a Facebook page, thank you Tom deFegely for coordinating
this.
Finally I implore all members to faithfully get behind our club. The Committee is dedicated to resurrecting the
playing list and achieving success.
With the new nets, an improved playing surface on our main oval and a new pavilion in season 2013-14 we
have the ability to achieve this.

luncheons) and with selection and organisation of the one day eleven.
Rob Robinson: Rob joined the club in 1972 as an opening batsman.
He lived in Fitzroy North and just wanted to play cricket in Brighton as he regularly visited a relative in
Brighton.
Rob’s value to the Club was immediately recognised and he was elected to the committee in 1972 where he
served for three seasons.
His major committee role was as delegate to the CMCA.
Rob only played for three seasons, mainly with the first eleven.
He moved to Carlton North but kept a keen interest in the Club and travelled by public transport to support the
club.
Rob was appointed first eleven team manager in 2005 and continues to hold that position travelling to games on
public transport.
He won the Best Club Member award in season 2005/06.

JOHN & MICHAEL EGAN SHIELD
This shield was inaugurated in 2005 – 06 season for annual competition during the home and away season
between Brighton Union and the Bentleigh ANA Cricket Clubs.
John and Michael (Mick) were brothers and both passed away at early ages.
John played all his cricket at Brighton Union and Mick played his formative years at Union.
John joined the club in 1952 and played his last senior match for the club in 1987. He played a total of 307
matches (four in the first eleven and the remainder in the lower elevens).
John was a tearaway fast bowler and captured 736 wickets at a career average of 15.1. He took five wickets or
more in an innings on 40 occasions with his best performance being 9/35.
He made 4360 runs in his career, with a highest score of 156 and was a frightening close in field where he took
150 catches.
John was Senior Club Champion in 1966/67, 1967/68 and 1977/78 and was a Premiership team member of the
Second Eleven in 1969/70 and the Fourth Eleven in 1974/75.
John served as President for twelve years, Secretary for two years, captained sides and was the First Eleven team
manager for 10 years and was awarded Life Membership of the Club in 1972.
The Clubs Junior Club Championship Award is named after John and even when he became very ill he still
made an effort to attend games of his beloved club and passed away due to his illness in 2007.
John was to Brighton Union what our motto stands for a Facile Princeps – An acknowledged Leader – and is
sadly missed.

BRIGHTON UNION CRICKET CLUB – THEME SONG
(Sung to the tune of La Marseillaise)
We are the Boys from Brighton Union
We wear the colours of Green and Gold
We will always fight for Victory
And we will always see it through,
Win or Lose
We do or die
And when we play, we always try,
Union, Union
The Club we hold so dear
Premiers we’ll be this year.
