CITY STATEEvery year – because we really care – we do our State Of Brighton issue, an assessment of where we think our city is right now. In the past we’ve concentrated on venues closing down, supermarkets opening and protesting. This year – like season three of The Wire – we turned our attention to local politics. Hell, is there anything more boring? Maybe not much, but unfortunately government and council action isn’t something you can ignore anymore. The Tories and their Lib Dem allies are slicing and dicing services to the point that society as we understand it is in jeopardy.

The infamous bin strike has shown that both councils and council workers are being placed in very difficult situations, to which there aren’t many easy options left. We assess what really happened – hunting out some actual facts from the mess of miscommunication.

But it’s not all doom and gloom – culturally Brighton is in rude health, with the music scene especially firing. And who better to bring us a bit of cheer than Us Baby Bear Bones, a band with so much creativity they’re making Brighton a better place every day. We’ll be fine, we just need to keep an eye on those in charge.

CREATE WINNERSBack in May, SOURCE ran a competition with Create Studios, offering a band or artist a photoshoot with our cover photographer Kenny Mc Cracken. Above you can see the winners, terrifically talented Brighton indie kids Grasshopper, who come away with a bundle of classic Mc Cracken press shots. The band, who are all still at school, start recording a follow up to their well-received debut EP very soon, and play The Hope on Sat 17th.

DEAD FAMOUSBanksy’s kissing policemen and John Peel’s massive head have long greeted visitors to Brighton from the side wall of the Prince Albert, but now they’ve been joined by a host of other musical icons, from Kurt Cobain to Amy Winehouse and John Lennon. It’s been expertly executed by local graffiti artists Sinna One and Req, and is destined for not only fame and longevity, but the Facebook photo album of every single tourist to visit our fair city.

PRIDE ARTSThe arts strand of this year’s Pride culminates in a series of films, cabaret, exhibitions and walking tours over the first weekend of this month. Highlights include Emporium Theatre’s burlesque night Icon! and the Dome’s Pink Fringe show I Wanna Be Loved By You (featuring the divine David Hoyle), both on Fri 2nd. There’s an ABBA Fever tribute at the Concorde on Sat 3rd, and more musical stars represented in 3D art form at Koba’s Pop Icons Of The 20th Century exhibition.

JAMAICA DAYUK rap icon Blak Twang headlines a celebration of Jamaican Independence Day at Life on Sun 11th. Originating from the Miss Dangerous shows at Easy Bar (now under new management as Crowns), the free Jamrock 2 event sees Twang AKA Tony Rotton joined by fellow hip hop artists K9 and Union Blak and the Dagger Sound System. The free event gets underway at midday, with food provided by The Caribbean Kitchen.

TIGER CAMPThe Blind Tiger is hosting a B.A.N.D.S. Summer Camp for 7 to 12-year-olds interested in making music. B.A.N.D.S. (Brighton Area’s New Developing Stars) gives kids a taste of forming a band, professional recording, designing album artwork, making a music video and performing live. There’re two week-long courses still available this month (commencing Mon 5th and Mon 12th), costing £150 per child and bookable through their website at blindtigerclub.com

COMEDY STARSJason Manford, Stewart Lee and Jimmy Carr are among the headliners appearing at this year’s Brighton Comedy Festival, which returns in October. The festival kicks off with its annual gala show at the Dome on Oct 4th, hosted once again by Alan Carr. Other Dome headliners include Ed Byrne, Jason Byrne, Milton Jones, Paul Merton, Russell Kane and Sean Lock, with dozens more shows in the Corn Exchange, Dome Studio Theatre and The Old Market.

FILMS WANTEDCinecity is currently seeking submissions by Brighton-based film-makers for its 2013 festival. Films must have been completed since September last year and have a Brighton connection, i.e. they must be made in the city or be made by a Brighton-based crew. All manner of submissions are welcome, whether shorts or feature length, including fiction, documentary, animation, experimental and artists’ films. It’s free to submit via cine-city.co.uk, deadline Sep 6th.

GREASEBALLNow under new management, The Hope is resurrecting the ‘proper rock bar’ atmosphere they once boasted, and to that end they’ve got new rockabilly night Greaseball taking over both floors on the last Saturday of the month. Sat 31st sees The Pine Top Boys and the Phil Polecat-featuring Sixteen And The Sidewinders in the great, sweaty, intimate space upstairs and DJs Dave Mumbles (Brighton Rumble) and Marco Juarez (Cat Club) in the rocking bar downstairs.

CIN CINCin Cin is a stylish Italian catering venture, serving from a vintage 1972 Fiat van, and it’ll be driving down to the Street Diner for the August bank holiday. Pronounced “chin chin” (Italian for “cheers”), the van offers up ‘bubbles and nibbles’, i.e. flutes of chilled, sparkling prosecco wine and boxes of antipasti. Street Diner takes place in Brighthelm Gardens every Friday lunchtime, with Cin Cin appearing at an extra market on bank holiday Monday. And we say cheers for that.

SNAKE EYED MAMASNew Brighton promoters Rockaway Beach are bringing rock’n’roll back to the former Engine Room with their Snake Eyed Mamas night. The thoroughly renovated Preston Street club reopened under the name Jackie’O last year, but it’s taken a while for the wild sounds it used to be famous for to return. Snake Eyed Mamas kicks off on Fri 23rd, promising 50s rarities, raucous rockabilly, voodoo bop, hoodoo blues and insane rock’n’roll, with more club nights and live music to follow.

THE NEW CLUBAcclaim keeps coming in for The New Club diner on Kings Road, with national freesheet Shortlist recently highlighting its burgers as among the best in the country. The New Club combines many flavours of America with its LA coffee house meets New York bar vibe, embellishing its signature burger menu with additional specials and salads. It’s licensed too, serving American and Canadian beers and cocktails.

WHERE TO NOWThey’ve put out a handful of cassettes in the past, hosted radio shows and run club nights, but electronic enthusiasts Where To Now have taken the record label plunge with their first full vinyl release by Louis Johnstone’s grey ambient project Wanda Group. Out on Mon 5th, the 12” EP ‘Masculinity Is A Wonderful Thing’ follows on from dozens of Johnstone’s releases on an international network of underground tape labels. Wanda Group supports lo-fi instrumental duo Yong Yong at the Green Door Store on Sun 18th.

THE BREWERY TAPMasterChef 2013 quarter-finalist Ingrid Wakeling has taken up a permanent residency as head chef at The Brewery Tap on North Road. Her appointment follows a successful pop-up kitchen, where she served up dishes from the BBC show for the bistro’s diners. Brighton resident Wakeling promises exciting and eclectic world cuisine to match The Brewery Tap’s selection of craft beers and specialist cocktails.

IYDEAIt took a while to arrive, but the second branch of vegetarian café Iydea has just opened on Western Road. Iydea’s original outlet on Kensington Gardens is a long-standing veggie favourite, with plenty of food awards to its name and SOURCE’s own Six Of The Best recommendation. The daytime café specialises in freshly made, quickly served, healthy meals, including an ever-changing combination of lunch options.

PHORIA Hope Thurs 1stWe fell in love with Phoria the first time we heard them play the bittersweet ‘Red’ from May’s ‘Bloodworks’ EP, and it’s still one of our favourite tracks of 2013. Their sound is an ethereal wave of soft vocals and chords with an instrumental strength, and their songs have a catchiness that defies their complexity. Brighton’s Finest are behind this gig and the support acts are the dreamy Fox In The City and Luo, who create live hip hop in a glitchy, modern style. (JMM)

LGBT BLT Prince Albert Fri 2ndThis awareness and fund-raising night is in aid of Gendered Intelligence – a community interest company that helps young LGBT people with support, mentoring, workshops and training sessions. For a fiver you can donate to a worthy cause while swinging your pants to a host of local talent including the hilarious punk rock buffoonery of ASBO Derek, the swinging, ukulele-wielding Bobby McGee’s, folky punks The Astronauts and Citizen 2’s electro-punk rap. Something for everyone then. (SC)

THE NIGHTINGALESPrince Albert Sun 4thRobert Lloyd’s Nightingales rose from the remains of Birmingham punk legends The Prefects, releasing a barrowful of acerbic, indie chart hits and albums during the 80s, and using their Vindaloo label to introduce Fuzzbox and Ted Chippington to the masses. Since 2004, the reformed Nightingales have since struck up a surprise relationship with German survivors Faust and topped their original output with a productive run of albums and EPs. Don’t miss Chefs/Helen & The Horns songsmith Helen McCookerybook in support. (SH)

S CLUB Revenge Sun 4thIs there a more perfect way to see out Pride than with an S Club party? Revenge are always booking acts bigger than you’d expect for the size of the place, and a full reunion would be impressive even for them, but, alas, this is only Paul, Bradley and Jo. No-shows by Rachel and Hannah might be upsetting for stray straight boys, but songs like ‘Reach For The Stars’ should have the Revenge crowd onside, especially as it’s only a fiver and you can stay for the Girls On Top Vs inDECENT foam party straight after. COLD CAVE Green Door Store Tues 6thSo, so, so 80s. That’s the only way to start describing this brilliant little band, who are dragging new wave – dodgy hair and terrible clothing included – into the modern world, whether we like it or not. The synthetic project of LA musician Wesley Eisold, Cold Cave make us think back to the serious heyday of Gary Numan, Depeche Mode and Factory Records, and it’s hard not to do that without the slightest twinge of a nostalgic grin on your face. THE PARKINSONSPrince Albert Fri 9thThere’s a noughties myth that’s taken hold in recent years that says no-one was listening to guitar bands anymore until The Strokes came along. It’s all bollocks of course, as frequently naked Portuguese punks The Parkinsons will tell you: wired frontman Afonso Pinto’s stunts included greeting the New York band at 2001’s Reading Festival by flicking his chocolate cake-smeared genitals at them. They smashed up the UK, they went away, and now they’re back, older but not likely wiser. (SH)

SCOUTING FOR GIRLSBrighton Racecourse Fri 9thAt the turn of the decade, Scouting For Girls were one of the UK’s most popular bands. The chipper ‘She’s So Lovely’ was unavoidable, whether you liked it or not. Now, three years on from headlining the Brighton Centre, they find themselves touring racecourses. However, it’s not as weird as it first sounds. The bounce of their piano pop is set to close Brighton’s Festival Of Racing so, if the sun shines, this is guaranteed to be a fun day out. (AJM)

THE SOFT MOON Haunt Fri 9thMaking the sort of music perfect for backing a Gaspar Noé film, The Soft Moon’s videos also nod towards the twisted Argentinian’s work in subtle but brilliant ways. Founded by multi-instrumentalist Luis Vasquez, The Soft Moon are a band based less on structured songs, focusing instead on synth-driven sounds and image. Vasquez’s swirling, atmospheric soundscapes are all-encompassing, incredibly engaging and definitely worth experiencing live. (LL)

OWEN PALLETT Haunt Sat 10thOwen Pallett used to record under the name Final Fantasy, but he is perhaps better known for his collaborations and string arrangements with the likes of Arcade Fire, Beirut and The Last Shadow Puppets. Pallett combines his violin playing and classical orchestrations with a more playful indie rock sound, creating something genuinely unique. With his fourth solo album ‘In Conflict’ due out soon, catch him performing his own material before he goes off to work with someone else again. (SE)

FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS / LOSTALONE Audio Sun 11thEven though emo has evolved into something cheerier than its origins, Fearless Vampire Killers and LostAlone are still championing its gothic heyday during this short co-headline run. Back when My Chemical Romance were calling time on ‘The Black Parade’, both bands were still at the beginnings of their careers. Fearless Vampire Killers’ conceptual releases and steampunk costumes may seem a few years late but their fans are too absorbed by their realm of Grandomina to notice or care – and that’s ok. (AJM)

BOSNIAN RAINBOWSSticky Mike’s Frog Bar Tues 13thWith both The Mars Volta and the briefly reformed At The Drive In out of action again, Omar Rodríguez-López has focused his restless imagination on Bosnian Rainbows. Evolving from his long established eponymous group, the band ties the guitarist’s prog rock leanings to a Banshees-esque post-punk sound, led by singer Teri Gender Bender of Mexican garage bunch Le Butcherettes. Bosnian Rainbows play this tiny show as guests of Physics House Band, for one of their occasional Physics House Party gigs. (SH)

GLASS SINESSticky Mike’s Frog Bar Sat 17thBrighton Rocks has been running almost every week at Sticky Mike’s for the past 12 months, seeing promoters Lout investing in laudable support of the local scene. Glass Sines are one of the most promising talents Brighton Rocks has unearthed and, following support from Radio 1 and 6 Music for their bouncy demo ‘Soaring Birds’, return to curate their own headline show. The band’s jaunty sound mixes low budget synth patterns, skittery rhythms and violin lines with lively guitarpop strumming. (SH)

LOOSE LIPS Hope Sat 17thBrighton Unsigned zine host another exciting evening of emerging talent from the city and beyond, including garage punk trio Dirt Royal, Littlehampton’s indie rockers The Vril and young post-punk outfit Grasshopper (see News). Headlining the showcase are Britpop rockers Loose Lips who, having played countless local shows, including this year’s Sea Monsters fest, are fast gaining a loyal following. If you need some fresh Sussex sounds in your life, make sure this is where you spend your Saturday. (AJM)

SAUSAGE FEST Blind Tiger Sun 18thAlthough its name implies a celebration of the Cumberland and the chorizo, Sausage Fest is not really a food festival, but a musical all-dayer curated by Dead Fun and Teen Creeps. The bands booked range from California’s psychedelic Cosmonauts, Cornwall’s ‘beach punk’ quartet The Black Tambourines and FatCat signed Traams. However, as enjoyable as the likes of Black Manila and Boneyards may be, we’re still hoping that some succulent sausages are available too. (AJM)

MOON DUO Haunt Tues 20thThey started as a side-project of Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson but, with the success of their 2011 album ‘Mazes’ and its follow up ‘Circles’, Moon Duo have rather, um, eclipsed their parent band. Ripley and partner Sanae Yanada tone down the Shjips’ psychedelic overload in favour of a mesh of lunar melodies, droning organs, motorik drumming and sunshine strumming. Think Sonic Boom, Suicide and Stereolab, then strap yourself in and set the controls for deep, deep space. (SH)

A NIGHT OF HELIOCENTRIC DUO EXCHANGE Blind Tiger Weds 21stThurston Moore returns for his second low-key Brighton gig of the year, once again as guest of out-there music and art festival Colour Out Of Space. The Sonic Youth/Chelsea Light Moving guitarist collaborates this time with COOS’ Dylan Nyoukis. He’s joined on the bill by his Ecstatic Yod buddy Byron Coley, in partnership with fellow critic, musician and illustrator Savage Pencil. Nyoukis’ COOS/Blood Stereo partner Karen Constance makes up the third of the evening’s duos with writer Lauren Naylor. (SH)

MARTHA WAINWRIGHTKomedia Thurs 22ndDaughter of folk royalty Loudon Wainwright III and the late Kate McGarrigle, and sister of the exuberant Rufus, Martha Wainwright has steered her own quiet path as a songwriter and performer. She’s also ably interpreted the songs of Edith Piaf and made us cry covering her mum’s song, ‘Proserpina’. Closer in tone to 70s folkster Judy Collins than any of the Wainwrights, but with the heart wrenching strength of her mother’s poetry, you’ll quickly become converted to her thoughtful and often emotional music. AT THE EDGE OF THE SEAConcorde 2 Sat 24th – Sun 25thThere’s no northern leg this year, but Yorkshire’s loss is Brighton’s gain as Leeds indie heroes The Wedding Present take over the Concorde for two full days of their annual festival. David Gedge and co celebrate the occasion by playing beloved debut album ‘George Best’ on day one, and their inspired 1992 run of monthly chart singles ‘The Hit Parade’ on day two. Supports old and new include The Twilight Sad, The Flatmates, Gwenno from The Pipettes and The Wonder Stuff’s Miles Hunt. (SH)

ELECTRONIC INDIE TRIO’S CREATIVITY STARTS WITH BEAUTIFUL SONGS AND GOES MUCH, MUCH FURTHERWhile really stopping and staring at our city in assessing it for our State Of Brighton issue we’ve decide that actually we like it here at the moment, despite everything. There are a lot of parallels between Us Baby Bear Bones and Brighton and they sum up a lot of what it is that we still love about our shared hometown. For a start they make great music – beautiful, melancholic sounds that refuse to sit in any easy pigeonholes. But while doing that they manage to be so creative, from making their own artwork and videos to programming their own website. They’re also fun, friendly and rather charming. They’re Brighton personified.

Recently we went to see them play and so did a lot of other people. A lot of other people. For their debut EP launch they completely packed out the Green Door Store, and it’s easy to see why they’ve attracted such a following. Over the last year they’ve come on in leaps and bounds, both on stage and in their recordings. Live they have a strange drummer-less set up, messing with a whole range of electronic instruments while a wall of umbrellas magically displays images behind them. Like their music it’s high tech and lo-fi at the same time.

Meanwhile their ‘What Starts With A U, Ends With An I’ EP, released on Love Thy Neighbour, is a joy. ‘Mountains’ is an off-the-wall r’n’b song that could have drums by DJ Shadow and guitars by Arab Strap, which makes it, of course, one of the most brilliant things to come out this year. Meanwhile ‘Sun’ is a pretty, delicate song with chiming guitars that Bat For Lashes wouldn’t have kicked off any of her albums.

Across the rest of the five-tracker they remain very difficult to pin down – neither a guitar band nor an electronic outfit. We don’t imagine they go into a practice room to jam the tunes out.“Basically we record a bit of the song, record a bit more of the song, and we jumble all the bits together and mix them up,” explains Daisy. “And then we have to learn how to play them.” “It sounds very cut-up live, and I think that reflects the writing process,” adds Puff. “It starts to sound different when we start playing it.”The band are so easy around each other it’s obvious they’re great friends, and it’s no surprise to learn that Puff and Daisy met when they were cartwheeling 10-year-olds.“You tell the story Luke,” suggests Puff.“I don’t know the story,” admits Luke, “because you make it up all the time.”They also like to concoct stories about how Luke became involved. The last one was that they met him on a ferry during a school trip. He canoed around a river with them for two days, sleeping underneath the stars. “He had a camouflage sleeping bag and he got covered in caterpillars,” Daisy explains. That’s a very elaborate tale. “It’s all in the detail,” smiles Puff.

This time out Daisy seems to keep the story of meeting Puff fairly believable when she explains they were in the same class at summer school, though she claims that Puff, now her best friend, didn’t want to be mates because she didn’t think Daisy was cool enough. “She wanted to be popular,” Daisy teases.

Have you dragged her down or has she dragged you up into social acceptance?“I think it was a balance,” says Daisy.“I cut all my hair off and then Daisy thought I was cool,” counters Puff, who may have influenced Daisy’s sudden recent decision to shave off her own locks.

From summer school they went to what they call, with tongue firmly in cheek, ‘rock school’ – through Daisy’s insistence. A laptop, a copy of GarageBand and a microphone (“I thought it was so pro!” says Puff) and within 20 minutes they had their first song. They were sent into the recording studio to finish it off. “It was like a cleaner’s cupboard,” remembers Puff. “That’s how our musical journey began – in a cleaning cupboard.”Then six years ago, aged 16, another ‘rock school’ brought them to Brighton and they met Luke. “I’d heard their GarageBand songs so I had this expectation that they were a bit crazy,” he recalls with no mention of caterpillars. “When I met them I thought, ‘It makes sense now.’ The first time I saw them was in the video when they make synth cake and put cake all over their faces. I thought, ‘These girls are crazy.’” “It’s Luke’s luck in life to be surrounded by crazy girls,” says Puff with a smile.

One of the things we love most about Us Baby Bear Bones is their creativity. It seems like they’ve always got a project on the go, whether a new video – like the macabre but beautiful short film for ‘Sun’ – or artwork that joins together to make a huge picture out of their EP sleeves. Their imagination doesn’t end with writing songs and performing them. “We like making stuff!” say Puff and Daisy in unison. “Constantly, all the time,” adds Daisy. “You can pretty much do anything in a band. You can make music videos, film, draw pictures, do graphic design, build websites like Luke. You can make a band magazine if you like. T-shirts, video games…”“We’ve got our own clothing range coming out,” says Puff before admitting. “Not really.” We wouldn’t put it past you. “One day,” she promises. “We’ve got our own perfume coming out. It’s actually a jar full of dirt and sticks.” “And a collection of spit from everyone at our gigs,” adds Daisy. “Every person who’s seen us play, collected in a jar.”

Us Baby Bear Bones are indicative of a new type of band who don’t want to hand over their artwork to a graphic designer, or their videos to a production company. They try to do everything themselves, or with their friends as collaborators. If they were given more money they say they’d just use it to make better things themselves. “I think it’s a good thing because then there’s a clear aesthetic,” reckons Daisy, “a sense of their personality if bands do it all themselves, because it’s coming from the artist rather than outside people.”

It’s all coming from Us Baby Bear Bones. We’ve no idea what they’ll do next, and that’s a very exciting thing.

WOOKIE Audio Fri 2ndIt’s been more than a decade since Wookie dominated the UK garage scene, but with the contemporary emergence of future garage, bass and UK funky, you’re just as likely to hear his hits on dancefloors now as you were back then. His music has endured, and rightly so: the basslines behind old tracks like ‘Battle’ remain undeniably fresh. This is part of Audio’s Garage Sessions and it’s a booking that will appeal to all fans, whether they first heard his rhythms in school discos or clubs. (JMM)

DONKY PITCH Green Door Store Fri 2ndPushing the limits of DJ monikers this month is DJ DJ Booth, who can be seen playing out for the first time tonight in support of DJ Paypal, along with Donky Pitch regulars Ghost Mutt and Grinel. DJ DJ Booth is a mysterious soul, but as with labelmate Slugabed, you can expect heady synths. DJ Paypal is one of Glaswegian label LuckyMe’s latest signings, and with their prior history of picking absolute gems to release we’re sure he won’t disappoint. (JMM)

RAM Audio Fri 9thIt’s been going strong for over a decade, and tonight’s party by Andy C’s Ram Records proves the label is far from long in the tooth. This is the launch for headliner Wilkinson’s new single ‘Heartbeat’, which features P Money and Arlissa, and has a suitably chest-trembling beat. Wilkinson’s one of Ram’s most modern icons and his sets are renowned for their slickness. Dimension and Dilate are also on the line-up, which is hosted by Visionobi and MC Double J. (JMM)

RIKO DAN Volks Sat 10thPart of the renowned Roll Deep collective, which acted as a springboard to stardom for the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder and main-man of the genre Wiley, when it comes to grime, Riko ain’t no amateur. The London city warlord is known for his distinctive and brutal delivery of Jamaican patois-infused lyrics and is now proving himself in his own right, with two solo albums to his name and plenty of collaborations, including one on Hyperdub with Terror Danjah. DJ MASEO Blind Tiger Fri 16thThe idea of seeing a member of De La Soul in a venue as intimate as The Blind Tiger is insane. A bona fide hip hop legend, it will be great just to be in the same room as the Daisy Age DJ. “A b-boy to my heart”, P.A. Pasemaster Mase is sure to bring lots of classics from the golden era of hip hop, as well as his own, more recent, stripped back productions. And if he gets on the mic and drops his ‘Ring Ring Ring’ vocal, well that would simply be a bonus. (JK)

SIMIAN MOBILE DISCOAudio Sat 17thWe’re amazed that James Ford can juggle his Simian Mobile Disco commitments with his never-slacking production work (he’s already helped deliver albums by Arctic Monkeys, Little Boots and Bill Ryder-Jones this year). The SMD duo of Ford and Jas Shaw are currently touring their live techno squelch around the European festival circuit, as well as keeping up a steady flow of releases on their own Delicacies imprint. The pair may well pick through those for tonight’s DJ set at Warehouse. (SH)

DEVOTION 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARYConcorde 2 Sat 17thWithout a doubt, this legendary night showcasing the cream of the crop of the jump-up drum’n’bass world is a must. While Hospitality nights offer a smoother taste of the genre in the form of liquid, Devotion is a baptism by fire for newcomers and a showcase of unadulterated talent for the purist. For anyone who falls in between those two, it’s a bloody good time, although stay out of the moshpit if you want to leave intact. (LL)

PRODUCERS’ RETREATCaxton Arms Sat 17thThe local event for local producers is back, this time focusing on the theme ‘Legendary’. The Producers’ Retreat events merge DJ and live sets with the visual creations of local artists, making for a spectacular afternoon in the sunny back room of the Caxton Arms. The artwork will be curated by Brighton collective Art Schism, while the music is being produced by the likes of Guy Andrews, Veils, Max Wheeler and friends, probably all dressed in togas. (JMM)

TENSNAKE Concorde 2 Fri 23rdForekast have returned to the Concorde after a little summer hiatus, and they haven’t lost any of their red-hot booking skills. Tensnake is the German DJ responsible for 2010’s single of the year contender, ‘Coma Cat’. An avid fan of Tumblr, he’s just released the first single from his new album, an addictive deep house collaboration with Fiora called ‘See Right Through’. He’s being pushed more than moonshine on London Road, so if you haven’t heard of him yet, you will very soon. (JMM)

TODD EDWARDS Audio Fri 23rdYou might think of Todd Edwards as the two-time Daft Punk collaborator, or know him as the American inventor of UK garage – either way he’s a legend. As the sound he pioneered comes back to the forefront, the skippy beats and sliced up voices of his mid 90s tracks – like ‘Saved My Life’ and his remix of ‘Alabama Blues’ – have never sounded better. One thing you might have missed in the vocal tics is that all his songs are about the Good Lord. Todd The God indeed. Booking of the month. (JK)

DANNY DAZE Audio Sat 24thIf you know Danny from his Hot Creations releases – all sunny and bouncy – then you might be surprised at how moody and 5am he is now. He’s gone back to his electro roots but retained a bit of house music’s swing to keep the floor moving. As techno returns to the dancefloor it’s a good move for him, and we can see tracks like ‘I See You There’ – the B-side to the throbbing ‘The Calm’ – going down rather well at Sonar or Fabric. Head down grooving. (JK)

GREG WILSON Terraces Sun 25thDisco Deviant’s daytime parties are legendary and if you haven’t got a ticket for this one we recommend not hanging about. Of course Greg Wilson is brilliant – Haçienda resident/electro innovator/quit DJing at 23 etc etc – and his re-edits are as good as ever (we’re still addicted to his spread out version of Gwen Stefani’s ‘Rich Girl’). But this is surely about getting the chance to party in the unusual environs of Terraces, dancing while watching the tide roll in. (JK)

ALTERNATIVE NOTTING HILL ALL-DAYERConcorde 2 Mon 26thSure, Notting Hill Carnival is great. But the crowds! The warm Red Stripe! Trying to get a tube home! There’s got to be an easier way. And – as you’ve probably guessed by the title of this preview – there is. The Concorde’s annual Alternative Notting Hill All-Dayer brings all the music and none of the stress. This year Kalakuta Millionaires deliver their latin-flavoured afrobeat, while 25-piece Carnival Collective will produce the parade vibe. That’s just the tip of the musical iceberg – obviously there’s loads of reggae too. And it’s free. (JK)

RORY PHILLIPS Green Door Store Friday 30thIf Rory Phillips doesn’t promise to come to Brighton more often we’re gonna have to kidnap him. It’s been more than two years since he tore up the Concorde to close The Great Escape but he’s back at High Pressure Nights, a club actually named after his remix of the Units song. Formerly known as Erol Alkan’s right hand man at Trash, Rory has long been out of that shadow with his own night, Durr, running for years and his synth-disco productions now picking up the same props his remixes always have. SUPERCHARGED Concorde 2 Fri 30thThings might be all four to the floor now, but back in the early 2000s breaks was the thing – some of it beyond terrible but some good fun – and Stanton Warriors and Plump DJs were both names you could rely on. We’re not sure if this is a revival night though. Last time we heard the Plumps they were banging out aggressive electro-dubstep. Still, the two biggest names of the era playing at the biggest breaks night of the time – expect some misty-eyed nostalgia to go down. (JK)

Brighton’s techno scene wouldn’t be the same without Sicknote, whose bookings are the optimum mix of fresh and classic, local and far-flung. The music always provides a full spectrum of techno goodness, and Sicknote’s accepting and diverse clientele make their nights a pleasure to attend. It wouldn’t be the Volks without a

dreadlocked woman in the bathroom brandishing a giant peg, a saucer-eyed man lying against the slot machine or someone with their head in a bassbin, but that adds to the unique charm of one of our favourite underground clubs.

No matter what else changes on the seafront or in town, you can always rely on the Volks for a quality, heavy night out, and Sicknote are at the forefront.

Dingy clubs and oppressive soundsystems are all very well, but sometimes everyone needs a live band and a bit of light to check out their dance partner’s moves. Thank goodness then, for Vamos!, a new monthly night at the Blind Tiger. There’s no dubstep shuffle here: think samba flourishes with flowers in the hair and you’re closer to the mark.

As well as great DJs there’s a top class live band, tonight in the shape of afro-Colombian outfit Pollito Boogaloo whose name aptly translates as ‘little dancing chicken’.

The hosts of this rhythmic night are Brighton–based Mr Bongo,

who know this stuff better than anyone having started out as a destination record shop in the 80s. They’ve been filling their record bags, and label, with the best Brazilian, latin, African, reggae and jazz music ever since. What a showcase Vamos! is.

FILM: BRIGHTON’S BIG SCREENMarine Parade until Mon 26thAlthough it missed a trick not turning up for Wimbledon, The Big Screen is here in time for (yawn) The Ashes, (sigh) F1 Qualifying and (more like it) CBeebies some mornings. Movie highlights include Anchorman, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, The Hobbit, Top Gun, Quadrophenia and Saturday Night Fever. Comedy screenings feature Tim Minchin and Eddie Izzard, music flicks take in The Stone Roses’ Made of Stone and Fatboy Slim’s Big Beach Bootique, and there’s a West End Weekender on the opening Sunday. BURLESQUE: IMMODESTY BLAIZE Emporium Theatre Fri 2ndLike every art form there’s good burlesque and there’s burlesque by enthusiastic amateurs. Immodesty Blaize is very good burlesque indeed – perhaps the best in Europe. In fact she’s Dita-good, famously winning Best Burlesque Act in Las Vegas back in 2007. You’re more likely to see her theatrically teasing with oversized props at a packed out Koko (or on TV) than up close and personal at the Emporium, though she’s still managing to squeeze a live band in. It’s part of the Brighton Pride Film & Arts Festival which is really rather good (see News). (JK)

ART: RYCA Ink_d Fri 2nd – Mon 26thThe art man for quite a few musos, Ryan Callanan has asked a couple of them – specifically, Norman Cook and Kasabian – to (kind of) return the favour, letting him turn their lyrics into new works. Cook’s description of Callanan as a “brother in smileys” is the sort of thing which sends a cynical old hack’s red mist tumbling uncontrollably down, but this should be a good ‘un. James Cauty’s Stamps of Mass Destruction are also at Ink_d from Tues 13th. (BM)

EVENT: PINK FRINGE PICNICJubilee Square Sun 4thCold truth time: at a Pride headlined by the real Sugababes, your chances of emerging without a monstrous headache and the eyes of a fugitive seem pretty minimal, even if you’re merely sitting in the pub wishing you could marvel at Mutya’s tattoos. Dispel your despair, because this public party down in the Square encourages picnic hampers (the clearance section at Tesco is approximately 20 metres away) at a series of performances in three mini-venues. Bathing machines are also available. (BM)

THEATRE: 9 TO 5Theatre Royal Mon 5th – Sat 10thA quick return for the screen-to-stage musical that garnered rave reviews when it arrived last December. The same leads, Jackie Clune and Ben Richards, return, as does Dolly (but only in video form). Aside from the famous title song there are 18 new originals in a score penned by Ms Parton that was nominated for both a Tony and a Grammy. If you hate your boss, you’ll come away with some great revenge tips and possibly a yearning for a curly blonde wig. (SC)

FILM: FLICKS AND KICKSJubilee Square Sat 10thCinecity, our ingenious annual salute to clever new films and classic cinematic brilliance, isn’t just for a month – occasionally, the film lovers from Screen Archive South East, the group behind it, wheel out the old reels and when they do it’s worth catching. Collaborating with Ragroof, who will be clicking their heels to sounds from the 1920s to the 1950s, this Vintage Mobile Cinema will be screening a load of short films based around the British summertime. FILM: DAVID BOWIE IS HAPPENING NOW LIVEDuke’s At Komedia Tues 13thThe lines to see the exhibition devoted to thin white rock alien demigod David Bowie, held at the V&A this summer, often rivalled the length of the ones he (may have) nasally sampled in his pomp. As a final send-off to a show devised with an admirable balance of affection and intelligence, its curators will be introducing a whirlwind of special guests, each offering their reflections on some of the 300 objects the David Bowie Archive presented to the public. THEATRE: THE GINGERBREAD LADY / THE 39 STEPSLittle Theatre Tues 13th – Sat 17th / Thurs 29th – Sat 31stOne to tear at the gin-rusted heartstrings of St James’s Street finest, as The Gingerbread Lady finds a cabaret singer’s career, marriage and health destroyed by alcohol, resuscitated by rehab, then dashed again when she falls off the wagon via some angst courtesy of her mate’s tumultuous lot in life. Then there’s The 39 Steps, John Buchan’s frenetically-paced classic which was adapted to memorable effect by Alfred Hitchcock. It should test the cherubic energy of The Little’s talented Youth Theatre. (BM)

THEATRE: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHINGBrighthelm Community Centre Fri 16th and Sat 17thCool young cats The Barefoot Players spin a Brighton twist on the Shakespeare tale, propping the established pair of lovers, Hero and Claudia, against a 1950s Brighton diner, the front of which is the setting for their imminent wedding. The hitch in their hitching is Dona Joanne, a sly fucker who’s conspiring to ruin their big day with some generally grizzly behaviour, as well as Benedick and Beatrice, who the potentially happy couple are intent on treating as emotional playthings. TALK: THE SPACEBasement Thurs 22ndThe second of this month’s three Space events is a dream billing for science fiction fans. First to chat with host Vicky Nangle tonight is scriptwriter Dennis Kelly, the man behind Channel 4’s recent hit Utopia, and co-creator, with Tim Minchin, of the West End version of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. Second up is TV producer Philip Hinchcliffe, who took on the running of Doctor Who in 1974 and, with its unstoppable star Tom Baker, steered the show to its most popular, Mary Whitehouse-baiting peak. Pinky is such a dude. As well as his big afro he has sunshine that flows out of him in the form of colourful art. The guy is pure good vibes, which might be why he’s the only local artist that has work hanging in the SOURCE office. The huge mural that he painted for our Andreya Triana cover is one of the best things we’ve ever commissioned – pure modern cartoon psychedelia.

Pinky’s work is an acid trip gone very right, so we’re very excited by this new exhibition that follows shows in London and Seattle. He’s joined by his partner Lonny Pop, who’s every bit as crazy and lovely as Pinky, her naïve paintings rawer but just as engaging. The trio is completed by Zen Rock, a man who describes himself as a “nomadic zen realist”. That seems to translate as bold, colourful work with touches of graffiti in with the lysergics. Turn up, tune in, drop out.


ALBUM: FRICTION ‘FabricLive 70’ (Fabric)This rough and ready compilation finds Friction always looking for the most interesting juxtaposition between two tunes. Whether it’s melding Sam Wills’ vocals from Optiv & BTK’s ‘Understand VIP’ with the squelching beat of DC Breaks’ ‘Swag’ or the glorious euphoria of Kove’s ‘Searching’ over Lenzman’s glittering remix of NZ Shapeshifter’s ‘Gravity’, it frequently challenges your expectations. As he nears the finale, tech step makes way for hurtling d’n’b such as Rockwell’s ‘Detroit’ and Ulterior Motive’s ‘Lost Contact’. (ZC)

ALBUM: KINS ‘Kins’ (hellokins.com)Even with the subdued keyboard waves of ‘Post Tropical Storm’ picking up airplay, the sudden online arrival of Kins’ album last month was unexpected. If you’ve caught the Melbourne expats since their SOURCE cover earlier this year you’ll have a fair idea of what to find. Deceptively complex rhythms drive leisurely, rippling guitar pop, peaking on the soft, woozy ‘Aimless’ and ‘Absblurd’, with Thomas Savage’s quavering vocals concealing some adult, abstract lyrics. Post-Radiohead, post-xx, for sure, but the sound is distinctly Kins’ own. (SH)

ALBUM: ‘THE OUTER CHURCH’(Front & Follow)Celebrating the haunted memories of audio-visual club The Outer Church, this frequently stunning compilation assembles a diverse cast of musicians from the night’s broad congregation. The ghostly songcraft of Paper Dollhouse and Hong Kong In The 60s and the playful electronics of Position Normal and Sone Institute are entry points to an unnerving landscape of resurrected voices, synths and tape echoes. Pye Corner Audio, Kemper Norton, Wrong Signals and Embla Quickbeam bring strange magic to a launch show at The Hope on Fri 2nd. (SH)

EP: P FOR PERSIA / SPEAK GALACTIC‘Aegis Arctic Alp’ (Cupboard Music/Beatabet/Fcking The Night)This split 12” is the lovechild of buddies P For Persia and Speak Galactic, and weighs in at well over half an hour on deep purple vinyl. From the frenetic chiptune energy of P For Persia’s opening track ‘Rainbow Flux’ to Speak Galactic’s 17-minute psychedelic epic ‘Magnified Destiny,’ the two ceaselessly inventive halves complement each other pristinely. The launch party is on the 23rd at the Green Door, and then they’re packing up together for a UK tour. (JMM)

EP: DELLA LUPA‘Of The She Wolf’ (dellalupa.bandcamp.com)Appropriately for her Italian, Vietnamese and British extraction, Della Lupa’s music is a smoky mix of hot, backroom music that one might have heard in speakeasies from Harlem to Taipei. None of your winsome folk nymphet here – Lupa’s strong contralto cuts through her equally forthright piano playing, producing a brooding, jazz sound that somehow manages to remain moodily pretty. No mean feat, and one that pays tribute to song constructions that wouldn’t be out of place on Bat For Lashes’ last album. (MB)

EP: TIGER BITE FEVER‘Love Is Strange’ (Kiloton)A new collaboration between Gentleman Starkey guitarist Stuart Wray and songwriter Amy Tinsley, Tiger Bite Fever’s debut is a sweeping blend of soulful vocals and lush, nocturnal arrangements. The four songs here are soaring compositions in the lovelorn, torch song vein and Tinsley reveals a strong, unshowy range on the sparse country lament of the title track. It’s the deep electronic touches and glassy black surfaces that give them their bite. The single launches on Thurs 22nd at Latest MusicBar. (SH)

SINGLE: ABI WADE‘Boxer’ (Love Thy Neighbour)SOURCE favourite Abi Wade is a unique musician who melds classical cello bowing with plucks and taps to create a sound that’s quite unlike any contemporaries. Add in a taste of her sultry vocals and arching electronica and you have a sound that’s enchanting. New single ‘Boxer’ is a defiant lament to an ex-lover, and Wade’s wronged lyrics are creepily haunting, with graphic statements bathed in a soulful melody. We’d never noticed before but the numbers on the doors at the Green Door Store are two, three and four. Combine those digits, Carol Vorderman style, and you end up with the title of this weekend-long celebration of the Brighton scene. With 20 of the region’s finest bands on offer, plus guest headliners Charlie Boyer And The Voyeurs and The Xcerts, this would already count as unmissable, but then they’ve only gone and made it free entry too. Here’s our guide to two days of the new musical generation.

CHARLIE BOYER AND THE VOYEURSFollowing the demise of his band Electricity In Our Homes, Charlie Boyer struck lucky quick, bagging a deal with Heavenly off the back of a bundle of supports for fellow motorik enthusiasts Toy. The Voyeurs bring organ-driven punk psychedelia in the Velvets/Modern Lovers vein for their Saturday night headline.

DEMOB HAPPYGrunge kids Demob Happy caused quite a stir this spring with their finely poised single ‘Wash It Down’, then hit the news when they caused the floor to collapse at a rather too lively house party gig. Whoops.

SHUDDER PULPSEvolving from the latterday line-up of underground darlings Epideme, Shudder Pulps are a driving, minimalist post-punk trio with a Faux Discx 7” in the pipeline.

SPIT SHAKE SISTERSPsychedelic in the heavy American way, Spit Shake Sisters bow down at the altar of Roky Erikson and Iggy Pop, piling on the garage splurge of modern scuzz rockers Ty Segall and White Fence. Dirty fun.

TELEGRAMStupidly hot right now (they recorded a Marc Riley session before they’d done a gig or released a demo), it’s no surprise to find Telegram are mates with Toy, The Horrors and Charlie Boyer. Shady pasts in art school covers band Proxy Music influence their energetic punk glam hybrid.

TIGERCUBGrowly grungepop trio, fresh off a nationwide tour with Dinosaur Pile-Up last month. Trustworthy Tom Robinson recently picked up their ‘Centrefold’ demo for his 6Music show.

TYRANNOSAURUS DEADFuzzy-edged super-melodic girl-boy indiepop with a big, bright 12” EP out on the delightful Odd Box Records. Music to grow your fringe to.

Let’s face it, a lot of the country is really struggling right now, and just getting through things is a damn good start. But Brighton continues to be a rather marvellous place to live. Sure it’s not without its pitfalls – awful wages, savage seagulls, the continued existence of poi – but damn we love this place. So here’s our annual look at the city. Are we up on last year, or on a losing streak? Have a read of this and decide for yourself but we’re smiling today. Again.

THERE’S A BRIGHTON BAND BONANZAIt’s a great time for Brighton music, with 2013 blessing us with an abundant crop of new bands. From Late Night Lingerie to Brighton Rocks, Sea Monsters to this month’s Green Door celebration TwoThreeFour, the city’s local promoters and fans are more spoilt for choice than ever. It’s not just SOURCE taking notice either, with acts like The Wytches, Royal Blood,

IYES and Luke Sital-Singh breaking into the national media and airwaves, and groups getting signed left, right and centre.

We can thank The Great Escape for some of this: you can’t underestimate the

benefits of the international music industry visiting the city with a mission to discover new talent. Things are just as healthy in the mainstream too. Just think of everyone’s favourite pop stars Rizzle Kicks (new album due September), chart-topping records by Conor Maynard and ex-BIMM pupil Tom Odell and the global success of Mike Rosenberg’s Passenger (number one in 16 countries). There’s something in the (sea) water.

WE’RE STOPPING KILLING OURSELVES WITH DRUGSSo if you’re living in Brighton and reading SOURCE, it’s fairly likely you enjoy going out and having a drink, and you’ve probably taken drugs at least once. You’ve gotta be responsible with how you treat your body though, and, according to the council’s recently published annual report on public health*, the trend is positive. Once

the drug death capital of the country, Brighton has shed that unwelcome accolade, with the city’s rate of drug-related deaths falling from 67 a year in 2000 down to 20 in 2011.

This may be partly because, in line with national patterns, the number of people using heroin and crack is falling, although the use of club drugs and legal highs is rising. Optimistically, the report also found a general decrease in drug and alcohol use by young (under 16) people, and a fall in the numbers of adult males who drank to excess (the figures for women remain unchanged). Keep it healthy, people.

LONDON ROAD IS BACK FROM THE DEADA few years ago it looked like Tesco would soon own London Road, planning to pretty much knock it down and build a mega-supermarket. So it’s with some surprise that we’re seeing it regenerate in such a strong way. Work has started on the student flats where the Co-op used to be and, while it’s sad to see such a beautiful building torn down, it was in a right

old state and the days of empty premises have to come to an end. Of course there are concerns about naïve kids getting burgled, but London Road’s remaining sketchiness could be the lesson in street smarts that they need.

Just a little further along is the Emporium theatre, a little gem of a place that made its name in the Fringe and has

stayed open with quirky events and international names. Within spitting distance of the Duke Of York’s cinema, the neighbourhood is suddenly looking quite cultural.

At the other end of London Road, York Place is becoming Brighton’s Burger Quarter. As well as Troll’s Pantry and the equally brilliant Burger Brothers (around the corner at the bottom of North Road), London’s highly-regarded MEATliquor is due to arrive a few doors down from the Hobgoblin. That’s a lot of competition for the old stalwart Grubbs.

THE END OF GUEST DJ ERAJust as Brighton’s got a really healthy local band scene, there are also lots of great DJs living and spinning here – from Radio 1’s DJ Friction to former UK DMC champion JFB. But while the band scene is backed up by a daily stream of international acts taking to our stages, it seems like less and less guest DJs are taking to our decks. The seafront clubs especially are booking fewer flyer-emblazoning, name DJs in favour of events based around a fun music policy.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – nights like 90s dance music celebration Pump Up The Jam at Coalition and Digital’s Stonelove are hugely enjoyable, with extremely talented resident DJs at the helm. But there’s something about seeing one of your DJ heroes to make a night a real event. The truth is that it’s harder than ever to get people through the door and people have less money for expensive ticket prices. Meanwhile DJ fees remain astronomical. And let’s be honest, is someone who’s driven down from London necessarily going to be better than George Nunn, Charles Green, Rob Luis or any of a hundred other resident DJs who can hold the floor at peaktime?

But it’s not over. Props must go to Audio, who have been picking out the best up and coming house DJs for a while

now and keeping them returning after they hit the big time. And to Life, whose Well Rounded

nights book DJs from out of town but refuse to announce them. It’s all about the night itself after all.

MENTAL RENTALYou don’t need to have lost your job in the recession to be finding it difficult to get the money for your landlord every month. Brighton is now the most expensive place to rent outside of very central London, and as we all know our wages don’t match. Already the students that fall in love with the city while they study here are finding it difficult to find a job that pays enough to let them stay. It could lead to a situation where we lose the creative people who make Brighton such a joyous place to live. What’s the solution? We’re fucked if we know. Answers on a postcard to the usual address please.

EMPTY SHOPS ARE FILLING UPThis is based on no actual knowledge of economics or any actual facts but there’s more money in town, right? As we go to press the government has announced that the economy has grown by a massive 0.6% this quarter – which is a tiny step in the right direction – but we’ve noticed a lot of the empty shops in the key parts of town have started to fill up again. Churchill Square and the North Laine, places that we’d never seen empty spaces lingering in before the crash of 2008, are back at pretty much full capacity.

As you head down Western Road you can see a real change, with galleries, cafes and interesting shops popping up to lift the gloom that has hung over the street for a while. Even the Engine Room is re-opening properly as Jackie’O, complete with promising rockabilly night Snake Eyed Mamas (see New In Town). And thanks to the sun coming out for the first time in about three years we’ve actually had some tourism money come in, finally

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS LESS ATTRACTIVEIt’s been up for less than two years, but we almost can’t picture the seafront without the Brighton Wheel now – despite the fact there can’t be much to see from up there. We’re only due to have it til 2016, which is a bit of shame, not just cos it’s a giant metaphor for the tourist money that keeps the city’s economy turning, but also cos there’re no other new attractions taking its place.

We’ll believe the millions of pounds thrown at the planned i360 tower were worth it only when someone ships it over from the Netherlands and erects the thing. The project has stalled for so long that its name has become hopelessly dated before building has even started. Word is it’ll be up and open by 2015, but, like the renovation of the Hippodrome, we’re not holding our breath. Meantime, you’ll find us hanging out at the Dolphin Derby on the pier. Plus ça change.


When looking at the state of the city, it’s impossible to ignore this summer’s Great Brighton Bin Strike. Though hardly the Winter Of Discontent (ask your dad), it was pretty grim for a while and people were FURIOUS, although they often weren’t really sure who with. That’s partly because you couldn’t seem to get a straight word out of anyone. So what actually happened, and whose fault was it? Like most strikes it wasn’t nearly as clear-cut as the mainstream media wanted to suggest.

Let’s start with some facts. Following a pay dispute with their Brighton And Hove City Council employers, Cityclean workers – who include our refuse collectors and streetcleaners – walked out twice this summer. After two days in May, and the infamous week in June, we’ve just narrowly averted round three in August. When polled by their GMB union late last month, 60% of Cityclean workers decided to accept a revised pay offer from the council, bringing the strained situation to an end.

As the bin strike unfolded, many residents seemed unsure what was happening as they tried to make sense of conflicting or incomplete information from the council, local and national media and the GMB. Even now things are officially over it’s still not exactly clear to people whether the bin men were being greedy or the council were being tight. Probably it wasn’t either, but with nearly no information, especially from the council, it was hard to tell. Part of the problem was that the council were very cautious about what information they could legally release in a pay dispute.

Basically, 2013 has seen our Green led council modernising its pay structures (at present a hodge-podge of conflicting scales and contracts inherited from the 1997 amalgamation of the old Brighton and Hove Borough Councils). While insisting the measures are about simplifying these structures and ensuring equal pay for equal work, rather than needing to save money, one area marked for modernisation is the allowances and expenses paid to staff above their usual wages.

This is why some Cityclean workers, in the worst-case scenarios, could have lost up to £4000 per year, with many more facing losing a lesser amount. Although the council pledges to pay all its workers a Living Wage above the National Minimum Wage, Cityclean workers are often at the lower end of the pay scale and see the cuts in allowances and expenses as having a real, detrimental effect to their income.

What was the big hurry? Well, the payments needed to be brought into line with equalities legislation. Previous administrations (both Tory and Labour led councils) had swerved the issue, knowing that it was going to be a painful process, and a very unpopular one. Unfortunately for the Greens it could be put off no longer. There are national legal cases coming up in October and if the pay structures weren’t found to be equal here then Brighton was in for a huge shitstorm. How big? Well, when Birmingham City Council got busted on the same issue they were liable for millions and had to sell the NEC. It’s not exaggerating to suggest Brighton And Hove could have gone bankrupt.

It’s important to remember that no one likes going out on strike. Striking workers don’t get paid while they’re not doing their job, and the unpleasant impact of refuse left on the streets affects them as much as anyone else. Withholding their labour demonstrates very quickly just how important a job Cityclean workers do in Brighton.

So after all that, who was to blame? Essentially no one. It was a bunch of put-upon people – the council and the Cityclean workers – desperately trying to sort out a shitty situation. But what is important is that a group of people who felt that they were getting shafted stood up for themselves and ended up with a solution that they were happy with. And that’s what we should learn from this.

Telling a 23-year-old girl she looks like a drag queen usually isn’t too well received, but Ewa, who we spotted this month, embraces it. “I love drag culture and make-up,” she says. “Depending on the occasion I do like to slap it on!”

Just as she likes to paint on the make-up, she combines her clothing with a similarly artistic touch. “When I put together an outfit I approach it like a painting composition.” says Ewa. No surprises then that she’s a Central St Martins grad and working artist. She paints large scale, amalgamated fleshy portraits... which makes no sense to us, but sounds very impressive indeed. Her outfit is a bold mix of clashing patterns, classic shapes and a feisty dose of bling – truly a work of art.

Some strange happenings in Brighton have been perking up our days recently. You might have seen someone advertising on Gumtree for a flatmate who’ll dress in a walrus outfit for free rent, or the person who reported a wormhole in their street to the council. Well, we can reveal that both oddities (and many more) are the work of Chris Parkinson, Brighton’s master hoaxer.

Despite the recent attention this isn’t a new thing for you, is it?It’s something I’ve been doing for years, so the last couple of times it’s been a bit strange to suddenly be all over the popular press. I think of it as a story, but it’s never a deliberate scheme to mislead people - it’s just making the world a bit more of an interesting and beautiful place. Thanks to the internet it’s quite easy – before you know it you have a new character on your hands.

Where have you been most surprised to see your work?The last couple were a lot of fun. Getting the vortex to another dimension onto Have I Got News For You was hilarious. I was actually at a gig and I came out to about 20 texts. It was bizarre watching Paul Merton cracking jokes about the vortex. With the walrus I was working at the pub and the landlord was upstairs on his computer and kept coming down with printouts from The Sun and the Daily Star and stuff like that. That was odd – I consider it an achievement if I make it into The Argus, which I got busted doing quite early on.

What do you do when you’re not hoaxing?Quite a few things. My day job is for the Fringe Festival, but I’m also a poet – I’ve released three books of poetry – and I do various other performances, with lots of gigs around Brighton. Sadly making up misleading stories for newspapers doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that I’ll ever get paid for. But you never know.

Did you do our dinosaur porn stories?I couldn’t possibly comment.

THE PLACEThe debut Foodilic on North Street is rather an interesting affair, taking the all-you-can-eat concept and applying it to, essentially, salad rather than Asian food. And it’s very good. A real bargain, there’s a much greater range of food than you might think, including hot grub as well as more types of salad and vegetable dishes than you’d imagine existed. There’s also good quality meat on offer too. To say we’re fans is something of an understatement, and we’ve been meaning to review the place for some time. The launch of a new restaurant on Western Road gives us a good excuse to try out the same great idea in a different place.

THE MEALOr not, actually. We’re rather surprised to enter and find no buffet tables loaded with colourful vegetables. Instead there’s a canteen-style counter with a wide variety of cooked dishes. Our disappointment is short lived as we survey the wide range of ready cooked and cold dishes from coq au vin to confit of duck leg, alongside many interesting salad dishes. The set up is closer to Iydea than the original Foodilic, but with the added advantage of meat, though you can’t pick and mix. We choose the stew (£6.50 to eat-in; all dishes are cheaper to take away) which is rich and full of big chunks of beef, served with rice and a cold green bean and mange tout salad. We wash it down with a pure apple juice (£3.50) as thick as any smoothie we’ve had. It tastes of goodness. The moussaka (£4.50) is also lovely, with lots of cheese and big chunks of veg. The two salads we add (£1.80 each) are very fresh with lots of herbs and oils to jazz them up.

THE VERDICTIs this new Foodilic as good as the first one? Yes, it’s every bit as good. We prefer the concept of the North Street eatery, perhaps because we’re greedy, but there’s no complaints about the quality of the food on offer, or the range. Healthy food doesn’t have to be boring, or expensive.

Politics can seem pretty hopeless at times, and perhaps now more than ever, when self-interest seems to be the order of the day. Getting your voice heard feels impossible, but it’s not long ago that green issues were marginalised. Now Brighton has a Green MP and a Green-led council, so we thought we’d ask Caroline Lucas – who just got voted Best Newcomer in Parliament – how to get your views about the things you care about taken seriously.

Can normal folk even get the government to listen to us?It’s really important for people to think that their voices can be heard and that their voices matter. One of the biggest myths that governments put out is that individuals are powerless, and that’s a very effective myth. The very first step is believing that you can make a difference.

What are the main ways people can make themselves heard? Does the old ‘writing to your MP’ actually work?Don’t underestimate writing to MPs, even if you think your MP already agrees with you it is quite handy to be able to have the evidence that you’re speaking on behalf of a large constituency. There are all kinds of other ways, particularly through social media. We’ve seen the rise of 38degrees.org.uk or Avaaz.org – different ways of bringing communities of interest together around particular issues. They’ve been incredibly powerful.

How about direct action – can that affect political thinking?UK Uncut have been fantastic in the way that they’ve used imaginative and peaceful ways of direct action. They’ve been able to make something as complex as tax evasion and tax avoidance into something that everybody feels very

passionate about. Simply by sitting down in Top Shop they’ve been able to bring that message home.

Why do you think the anti-austerity People’s Assembly group important?It’s about gaining the confidence that comes when you’re with lots of other people that feel the same as you do. And to hear some of the

many, many alternatives that are out there. We’ve got some really high powered economists – and even the IMF – on our side on this one, saying that, when you’re in a recession, if you massively cut public spending you drain any demand you might have had in the economy out of it. And then it’s not surprising the economy isn’t recovering. Gatherings like the People’s Assembly can help in both the psychological way of saying, ‘Yes, there are alternatives, believe in the power of them,’ but also in a practical way, in terms of planning future activities, joint campaigns and so on.

Do you get despondent ever? It’s a tough fight. I understand why people will be feeling despondent. But there is power in feeling that we can change things, and things have been changed in the past. It doesn’t help you when you’re on the receiving end of it but the more people can recognise the government’s position for what it is – when you can name it as a misguided ideology – does help with the analysis, and helps get more people to join together to oppose it.

You have quite a unique position in Parliament in that you’re a single representative of a party. What do you see your role as?It enables me to bring to the table issues that otherwise wouldn’t be discussed. I see my role as kind of being an outsider, but being an outsider on the inside, in the sense that I don’t fear any whips, I can follow my conscience and I can follow the issues that the other parties aren’t really talking about. I will be the first to recognise that, in being one person out of 650, I’m not going to swing majorities. What has been positive has been recognising that there’s the opportunity for working in alliances.

There are a lot of musicians in town, and all of them – except maybe Nick Cave, David Gilmour and the bloke out of Dollar – are broke. So rather than taking to the street begging, many people take to the streets to entertain. This is both a very good and a very, very, very bad thing. Jesus, there are some shocking buskers in Brighton, not least the guy who plays random notes on his electric guitar in New Road. Get a practice room, mate. Anyway, here are six buskers we’re always happy to hear.

TAPE PLAYER BOYWith busking you can either have a good gimmick or a great voice. The kid with the Kid’n’Play haircut (cool enough to get into our Street Style page) has got both. A sweet falsetto that’s going to see him in the charts over thoughtful r’n’b any day now, he keeps things interesting by singing over a colourful 80s cassette player. It’s totally adorable. He’s currently at the BRIT School (hear his stuff at soundcloud.com/lukefincher) and is certainly Most Likely To Succeed of the class of 2013 buskers.

SALTY SEA DOGWearing a costume while busking can make you stand out, and even if that guy that sings sea shanties with a mandolin is just playing a character he’s still ace. But we’re sure he means it, man. Looking like he’s just got off a particularly dramatic episode of Deadliest Catch, his songs seem to be a window into his dark soul. He’s absolutely arresting in his intensity and the songs are great. We haven’t seen him since the sun came out – maybe he’s more comfortable in the driving rain.

MASH-UP CHARMERThe last thing you want when you’re busking is people getting bored, and this guy – who looks like he might be in an indie band – keeps things moving by frequently mixing up two

songs at a time. One minute he’s hooked the children in with songs from The Jungle Book, and the next the oldesters are raving to ‘I Like To Move It’. It’s a wall-to-wall party set, all killer no filler. Best fun when he has a tuba player along for the ride, obviously.

PIANO-PLAYING MUPPETWe suspect this guy has been around for a while but has increased his fanbase with a radical image change. Just ask any cockney who’s looking to roll out the barrel, everyone loves a good tinkling of the ivories, but with the added Rowlf outfit the kids are now fully on board too. Props for not being a dick about people taking photos, and also for being able to play so well without being able to see the keys. Jolly good fun.

STRAW BOATER CHAPSEven good buskers will struggle to pull a crowd, but these guys, who play modern music on trad jazz instruments, always have people transfixed. That’s because as well as being great musicians they’re also real showmen – weaving in and out of each other while knocking out ‘Seven Nation Army’ on banjos, military style drums and a big old brass sousaphone. It’s great fun and it’s not unusual to see people dancing. You can even hire them for your wedding at ironbootscrapers.com.

STEEL DRUM DUDEThere’s a few things we like about this guy. Firstly, his commitment to work – he’s always at his ‘desk’ on the Pavilion Gardens path. Also he’s made a career with the most unusual of instruments, which we think is a Zimbabwean mbira dzavadzimu in a deze. Add in an occasional big headdress and a frequent even bigger smile and you’re onto a winner. He’s also not afraid to collaborate, mostly with the soprano sax hippie guy. If all the buskers got together to create a supergroup he’d be the glue that held them together.
