Brighton i360Newsletter - Issue 1 - July 2nd 2014
Welcome to the first project newsletter for the Brighton i360. Thank you to those who attended our meeting on 12th June, it was good to meet so many of our neighbours. For those who could not attend please read on to find out more about us and what to expect during the construction period.
As you may have read in the newspapers or if you have visited the West Pier site recently, the Brighton i360 project is underway. Enabling works to remove the root end of the West Pier have been completed by Dorton. Those parts of the dismantled root end that can be re-used will come back as part of the landscape works. The sea island will remain.
Construction Team
The construction team includes main contractor Hollandia, who built the London Eye steel structure, with subcontractors Poma, who built the London Eye capsules, and local marine and civil contractor Mackley. Mackley is a Sussex based construction firm providing a comprehensive range of services and has a wealth of experience in coastal construction projects. Mackley has extensive experience of
working on Brighton Beach. Enabling works for the construction site have started and you will start to see materials and machines arriving in the next few days.
We will be aiming to create as much interest in the project as possible during the construction phase to create footfall to this area of the beach for the benefit of all the seafront traders. We will be generating interest online via social media. We will also be running community events, hard hat tours of site and will create viewing windows into the site along with many other exciting initiatives.
We will be co-hosting a community event with the Council on Tuesday 29th July 2pm-4pm to celebrate the official opening of the newly renovated arches by the Mayor and to commemorate the ‘first spade’ in the ground for our construction. Do come along to join us.

First Steps
The construction team’s first task is to construct the access road that will carry the construction traffic over the course of the build along with the pedestrian walkway. Work for this will start on Monday 7th July and is expected to be completed by the end of July. The road is constructed on the beach by laying down sand and giant timber boards. To protect the public the access road is bordered by a barrier topped with white metal mesh fencing. In light of your feedback, we have aimed to minimise the visual impact of the barrier by selecting a white coloured barrier.
There will be three crossing points for pedestrians to access the promenade from the beach. This includes the following locations:
• The steps between the Bandstand and The Playground (the steps will remain open)
• Entrance between the Playground & Al Fresco restaurant (the steps by Al Fresco will remain open)
• Access to the newly renovated arches
The speed limit on the access road will be 5mph and the crossings will be clearly signed but it is important to cross carefully as you would with any road crossing. Deliveries to businesses will still be between 6am and 11am and delivery vehicles will be able to use the contractors access road to exit the promenade from the eastern end of the site through to the Peace Statue at the western end. Deliveries to businesses on the west of the site will continue to use the existing road.
