Welcome to the 11th project newsletter for the Brighton i360.

The first part of the tower is now firmly into the groundMay was one of our busiest months to date, with the placing of the anchor bolt and the recent concrete pour event the latest of the i360’s major construction milestones. The public and press got fully involved, with Ruth, our Public Liaison Officer, live on BBC radio Sussex during the pour and Dan Argles, Mackley Project Manager interviewed for the evening news on BBC South East television.

Building ‘giant yellow’A 100-metre high crane has now arrived on site, ready to unload the 17 specially fitted out steel cans, each measuring between six and 12 metres, directly onto the beach when they arrive on June 11th.

The 600 tonne tracked crane arrived in 18 lorry loads. It has a superlift that allows us to deploy an additional

In May we stopped removing things from site and started putting things back in!

The first part of the tower arrivesMid-May saw the arrival of the holding-down bolt, or anchor bolt, from Holland. Weighing in at 22 tonnes, it arrived ahead of the cans so that we could concrete it into the basement.

The anchor bolt has 72 bolts, 36 on the inner ring and 36 on the outer ring, each about 3 metres long and each weighing about 100 kilos. Despite the size and weight, the team moved the heavy piece of kit in just 10 minutes, which is impressive considering it had to be placed in a mm perfect position.

Surrounding the anchor bolt, a specialist team were employed to hand tie 50mm diameter bars, creating a 240 tonne steel cage that will reinforce the concrete.

Half an Olympic swimming poolOn May 30th the first of the 4,070 tonnes of concrete needed, was poured into the basement to create the foundation for the tower. It was a mammoth exercise, with 3 local concrete plants dedicated to the site and a steady flow of trucks arriving every five minutes at from the early hours of the morning.

To ensure there was no traffic jams caused on the Kings Road, a traffic-management plan was agreed with the Council, with trucks held at Shoreham.

2,640 tonnes of concrete arrived overall - the equivalent of half an Olympic-size swimming pool. As the trucks arrived, the concrete was deposited into the pump wells. It was then hosed into the basement via 3 concrete pumps. Each truck was emptied in just minutes.

The concrete takes just 2 hours to set and there is no second chance - a lot of pressure was on the teams involved to make it the perfect pour. Chris Barratt, Area Manager for Camfaud, the concrete specialists, said, “The day went more smoothly than we could possibly have anticipated thanks to meticulous planning from site.”

Our next pour is on 10th June.

A day for familiesThe Brighton i360 community team were on site all day of the concrete pour, sharing information with the public and entertaining the kids (and hen parties) with a visit from everyone’s favourite construction worker.

Ruth Chapman said, “Younger kid’s faces lit up and older kids really enjoyed our concrete facts and infographics - it helped families really engage with what we are doing on site”.

We are now just days away from the first of our beach landings and the boats are loaded and ready to go!

The cans are being brought to Sussex by barge from a specialist factory in Holland and the recent work on the beach has been in preparation for their arrival. We have had to make the section of shingle directly in front of our construction site suitable to carry the weight of the yellow crane, which will be used to lift the cans from the barge and onto dry land.

Thursday promises to be a very busy day - with lots of people coming to this area of the seafront to see our giant yellow crane in action. We are running two morning events at Alfresco and have invited around 200 people from across the city to come and find out more about what is going on and what the i360 will mean for Brighton.

We are also expecting significant media interest in the arrival of the cans as well as locals coming down throughout the day to see what is going on - so the area near our site should be very busy which will hopefully be good for local businesses.

The barge is set to arrive at around 5am and the unloading process is likely to last two days. If you have any questions, please do drop us an email at [email protected]

Steel cans due to arrive 11th June

Come and see the cans on the beach!

Thursday June 11th, 6am onwards The cans will be unloaded and placed onto the beach throughout the day, - a spectacular sight on your commute.

For those who want to find out more, we will be manning a stand in front of the West Pier Arches Shops (nr Alfresco) from 3.30 until 5.30pm. We will have a

fabulous band, ‘Steel Strum”, giving the afternoon a beach vibe.

Pop down and see us after school or work and watch the giant yellow crane move the 12m high space- age cans into position!

West Pier toll booths restoration beginsWith only 12 months until the anticipated opening of the seafront attraction, restoration work on the eastern toll booth has begun.

A team of experts from Swan Foundry are currently shot-blasting sections of the old ticket booth to strip it back to bare metal.

The technique involves sections of the booth being put inside a shot blaster, where they are rotated while being bombarded by steel shots of various sizes for around five minutes.

A replica of the western toll booth will also be added to the site . Rachel Clark, the West Pier Trust’s chief executive, said “We are delighted that a key element of the i360 scheme will be the reinstatement of the pier’s toll booths in their original positions”.

Promoting the city, the people and the i360The Brighton i360 has been working with local business The Ideas Factory on a promotional video – and the result is a fantastic film which encapsulates all that is brilliant about Brighton.

The teaser film has already attracted more than 16,000 views, with around 900 people Liking it on Facebook.

Directed and produced by Robert Dee, the film features an array of Brighton and Hove landmarks and institutions – a list the i360 hopes to join when it opens to the public next summer.

The Royal Pavilion, Palace Pier, Brighton and Hove Albion’s American Express Community Stadium, The Grand and the World Famous Pump Rooms on Brighton seafront are all included in the film.

And, because Brighton and Hove is as much about the people who live here as the buildings, The Ideas Factory recruited a small army of extras to star in the promo.

Charleston dancers from Savoy Kicks added some energy, members of Brighton Swimming Club showcased the unique side of the city and pupils from Cottesmore St Marys RC Primary School summed up the excitement building about the tower’s arrival.

Robert Dee, of the Ideas Factory (left), said, “The main challenge was to promote an attraction that didn’t currently exist. It made me think of older Hollywood film trailers that don’t give away the big ‘reveal’ – the dinosaur, the spaceship –

and I thought it would be a great concept for the film to shoot reactions of different people.

Eleanor Harris, the i360’s chief executive, was delighted with the outcome. She said: “We wanted a film which showed why Brighton and Hove is such a great city at the same time as ramping up the excitement over the i360.

“The Ideas Factory has managed to achieve both of these. It really is a fantastic promotional film. It is a really fun video and shows why Brighton is such a brilliant place to visit. The music certainly gets you tapping your toes and hopefully the video will add to the excitement already building around the i360.”
