More than one in seven parking tickets issued in the city are subsequently cancelled, Brighton & Hove Independent can reveal.

A remarkable 16,225 tickets - about 14% of the 119,444 issued - were “waived” last year.

If they had been valid, the tickets - three of which were issued to buses - would have netted the city council revenues of at least £500,000.

tickets; “Mitigating - Special circumstances”, 1,499 tickets; and “Mitigating - First offence; discretion applied”, 1,423 tickets.

More than 1,000 tickets were rescinded after evidence was provided a vehicle was loading or unloading. Inadequate signing and lining resulted in 86 tickets being waived.

Furore over Labour's botched attempt to 'fix' safe seat

Anger has erupted about a selection contest for one of the safest Labour wards in Brighton - amid claims it was an attempted "fix" to ensure the party's favoured candidate was chosen.

The three sitting councillors in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean - along with two other potential candidates - were hoping to be chosen to stand in the local elections next year.

Whoever the ward party picked could be almost certain of becoming a member of Brighton and Hove City Council in May next year. They would have a four-year term as a councillor ahead of them.

But despite just 10 people voting, a recount brought to light a miscount.

And then two of the candidates tied, with a run-off now looking likely.

Eight local branch members turned out for the three-hour meeting at the Bevendean Church Hall in Norwich Drive, Bevendean.

They were joined by the five

candidates and four members of the executive committee of Brighton, Hove and District Labour Party - including Melanie Davies, the city party’s chair.

The local branch used to need just seven for a quorum: the minimum number of people required for the meeting to be valid.

But one of the executive committee members said that the quorum should be 10 – so two executive committee members took part in the meeting and, crucially, the voting.

They were Peter van Vliet, the city party treasurer, and John Warmington, his predecessor.

Mr van Vliet said that the result of the first secret ballot saw Councillor Leigh Farrow top the poll, with Harris Fitch second and Councillor Mo Marsh third. Christine Robinson was said to have come fourth and former mayor Councillor Anne Meadows fifth.

Robert Brown, who was chairing the meeting, called for a recount. This found that Councillor Meadows and Christine Robinson had, in fact, tied - with Councillor Meadows winning the run-off.

Subsequently, she claimed attempts to post her victory on the Labour Party's Facebook page had been thwarted, with posts being deleted. Instead, she tweeted her victory - even though the party has yet to announce the result

The next vote saw Councillor

Farrow come first and Councillor Meadows second. Councillor Marsh, who topped the poll at the last elections in 2011, tied with Mr Fitch, whose family have long links to the local Labour Party and the council. For several months, the youngest in the Fitch dynasty, had been said by insiders to be favourite to get the seat.

Another vote was held and they tied again. A local party member asked one of the executive committee members to abstain so that the final candidate could be chosen. Mr Warmington said that this was against the rules.

It transpired that both executive committee members were voting for Mr Fitch, a relative of veteran councillor Brian Fitch, whose father Stan was a Brighton Council stalwart.

The farcical proceedings came hours after the local party posted news that former Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive Martin Perry was to be a candidate in the city. Councillor Warren Morgan, leader of the Labour Party in Brighton and Hove, said that he would be found as safe a seat as possible.

Late last year Councillor Farrow was told that he had not been chosen for the candidates list. He appealed and was restored to the list.

And last summer Councillor Meadows was suspended after an anonymous claim that a gift had gone missing while she was mayor. No evidence could be found to support any wrongdoing on her part.

Labour’s regional director Malcolm Powers is expected to order a run-off between Councillor Marsh and Mr Fitch.

Brighton and Hove Albion have signed a new record kit deal with Nike.

The sportswear giant will team up with the Seagulls from June 1 this year – meaning the Albion’s first team, under-21 squad, women's and youth teams will sport new Nike kit when they return for pre-season training at the club's new training ground this summer.

It replaces the existing deal with rival kit manufacture Errea which has run since 1999 – with the length of the new Nike tie-in described as “multi-year” by the Albion.

Chief executive Paul Barber was delighted to announce the new partnership which has come at a good time for the club as it tries to address an annual loss of more than £14 million last year.

He said: "In securing a long term agreement with Nike, we are delighted to announce another record-breaking partnership for the club. Nike is the leader in football and a huge global brand, which will help lift our club's profile as we continue to develop.

"The new deal represents a significant increase on our existing commercial arrangement, and we are looking forward to working closely with Nike to give our supporters a new kit and

exciting product range."Nike has existing deals

in place with the England’s national team, both of the top Manchester clubs and Everton as well as an impressive stable of clubs on the continent.

The new Albion kit will be unveiled later this year and Brighton & Hove Independent understands the design of the home shirt will be unique to the Seagulls.

Nike has also promised “a highly technical range of training and leisurewear” for both the club’s teams and fans alike.

Albion's head of commercial Simon Williams confirmed the club would retain exclusive distribution rights via its club shop website.

The last year has seen many significant achievements for the council and the city.

In the summer, we had record GCSE results and were also accredited as the world’s first "One Planet City", in recognition of our work to become more sustainable.

More recently, we signed the Greater Brighton City Deal, which will see huge amounts of economic investment in the region and closer working with our neighbours, with whom we share residents, businesses and visitors.

These and many more are outlined in the council’s recently-refreshed Corporate Plan, which sets out the council’s purpose, ambition and priorities as an organisation.

In 2014-15, we will continue to focus on our four main priorities: tackling inequality; creating a more sustainable city; engaging the people who live and work in the city; and modernising the council.

Among our specific proposals are commitments to work with private landlords and the universities to improve standards of properties in the city and to establish an ethical lettings agency.

We will also develop our libraries as community hubs, introducing new information technology facilities, toys for children, and study space.

We will continue to look for ways to manage and conserve our open spaces so that their heritage, wildlife and use by local people can be protected.

And we must use digital technology more to improve our services - both in terms of making them more accessible to our

digitally-minded residents, but also in making sure our internal processes are more efficient.

The ongoing challenges of government cuts to our funding and growing service demand means that business as usual simply is not an option.

We need to show our commitment to openness by sharing resources and expertise with our partners, such as the NHS and the police.

Ultimately, working together and working differently will be the only way that we will be able to meet the challenges ahead.

On the eve of her trial after anti-fracking protests, the Brighton Pavilion MP insists Constituents can still count on me

Next week marks the start of my trial at Brighton Magistrates' Court, following my arrest at Balcombe last August for taking part in a peaceful protest against fracking. Along with four others, I am charged with obstructing the highway and failing to follow police instructions to move to a specified protest area. We are all pleading not guilty.

I have been touched by the good wishes of many constituents who have contacted me to let me know of their support for my actions.

And I want to assure all my constituents that they will be able to contact my office as usual. I will be working around the hours of court proceedings to ensure that I continue to fulfil my parliamentary and constituency responsibilities,

and continue to represent the residents of Brighton Pavilion.

Working to address the threat of climate change has been a priority for me throughout my political life. I know, too, that this is very important to large numbers of my constituents, because so many of them have written to me about the environmental risks posed by fracking, and the urgency of tackling climate change.

As an MP, I am in the privileged position of being able to make the case in parliament. I have tabled motions, championed debates, put questions to ministers, and spoken out in the media - and will continue to do so.

But the Government is ignoring the evidence, ignoring the climate science, and ignoring the enormous benefits of a secure and affordable energy system based on renewables and efficiency. Instead, they are set on a reckless and irresponsible new dash for gas, offering the fossil fuel companies generous

tax breaks as well as senior roles within government itself.

Climate scientists and experts are clear that emissions from nations like the UK need to be reduced much faster than they are at the moment. We need a rapid shift to a zero-carbon economy, along with policies to keep the vast majority of known fossil fuels

in the ground, if we are to avoid catastrophic climate change.

The window for action is closing fast.

As a result, I decided to join the peaceful protest to send a clear message to the government, as well as to support and join those people at the proposed fracking site in Balcombe who were standing up to

be counted. There is a proud tradition of non-

violent direct action in this country. I believe that using peaceful means to try to stop a process that could cause enormous harm is not only reasonable but also morally necessary.

I will not have recourse to any public funds to fight my case.

Brighton and Hove is the destination for some of the world's top travel bloggers this weekend.

They will visit the city as part of VisitBritain's first Global Bloggers Trip, which is bringing 31 top travel bloggers from 19 countries to Britain. They will experience different regions, attractions and activities across the country and share their experiences with a collective online international audience of more than one million followers.

The trip began last night (Thursday) with a welcome event at The Warner Bros Studio Tour in Watford, before the bloggers split into groups to experience different parts of Britain through a series of themed itineraries - spanning North Wales, the Lake District, the Cotswolds, Brighton, Scotland, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon.

A contingent from Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and United Arab Emirates will be in the city on Sunday and Monday (March 23 and 24) as part of a shopping-focused itinerary. During their visit, they will be using the #GREATBritain hashtag.

The exposure generated from the bloggers writing about their experiences on this trip aims to deliver increased tourism interest in different regions around Britain, educating potential visitors about the range of things to do, and inspiring them to book trips to Britain to experience it for themselves.

While some 32.9 million overseas visitors explored the UK last year, VisitBritain believes this will grow to 40 million a year by 2020.

Brighton Marathon: Your final countdown

If you are running the Brighton Marathon on April 6, you are in the final countdown of your training. The Bridge Brighton - which is represented in the marathon for the first time this year - has published its top nutrition tips for fellow marathon novices.

At this stage in your marathon training, it is all about re-balancing stamina and endurance work and making more time for your body to rest and recover. You need to build your energy and fuel reserves and avoid any last-minute injuries.

Nutrition during this final countdown is really important, explains Natasha Cooper, catering manager at The Bridge, a community learning centre in Lucraft Road, Brighton.

It is not just a question of what you eat, but finding time for proper meals when you can relax as well as refuel your body.

"Around two-thirds of your total calorie intake should be coming from good carbohydrates - this includes things like pasta and baked potatoes, rice, bread and cereals. But protein and good fats are also very important. And make sure you keep yourself well-hydrated."

Natasha advises eating smaller meals more often in this final phase of your training - replacing the standard three meals a day with five. And, as race day approaches,

look at increasing the amount of carbohydrates you are consuming.

“Just because you're focusing on the carbs, doesn't mean that all carbs do the same job. Think about quality as well as quantity.

“A good quality dried pasta doesn't necessary cost much more than a cheaper brand, but it is made from better quality wheat and can be more digestible.

“Also vary your carb intake. Think about eating barley, beans (in moderation), bulgur, brown and wild rice, lentils and quinoa, a seed which can be cooked like rice and which is a useful source of protein

as well. Sweet potatoes are also a really good choice.

“If all you do is fill your plate with pasta

one meal and rice the next, sheer boredom may stop you keeping your carb intake up. Variety keeps meals interesting.

“Good sources of protein include

lean meat, poultry, fish, nuts, eggs and

dairy (not too much cheese). Good fats

can be found in olive oil, avocado pears, nuts and seeds.”

Natasha also points

out that those new to marathon-running may be suffering last-minute nerves and has some useful tips on how to overcome this when it comes to eating well.

"Eating 'on the run' is not a good idea. Sit down and eat at the table and enjoy your food, savouring each bite. Don't just dash out of your chair after swallowing the final mouthful. Don't eat at your desk. Now the weather is better, get outside - even if it's just a short break while you eat.

"Of course, everyone is different and you may well be working with a running club or more experienced running partner who is able to give you specific advice. But it is important to look after yourself; make sure you're eating and drinking enough and to pay attention to what your body is telling you."

■ A copy of the nutrition tips is available on The Bridge website: www.thebridgebrighton.com. If you download the tip sheet, The Bridge is asking you to make a donation to its own marathon runner, Robin Jones.

■ If you bring a copy of the tip sheet along to The Bridge cafe, this year's Brighton Marathon runners - with proof of status - will receive a 20% discount on a meal or snack. The discount is available until the end of April.

Spotlight on Adam Stower, the illustratorbehind this year's Young City Reads title

The Prince's Boyby Paul Bailey

This is an elegant, swooping foxtrot of a book. Set in

Paris in 1927, it tells the story of Dinu, a Romanian sent from Bucharest by his wealthy father to live the life of a literary bohemian and to sample the delights of a Parisian way of life.

Dinu is an innocent in Paris and is encouraged by his cousin to live la vie de Boheme. But Dinu is drawn towards the Bains du Ballon d’Alsace, a notorious brothel that caters for gentlemen looking for something a little bit "different". (It also has a velvet couch that belonged to Proust in the salon.)

It is here that he meets Razvan, a fellow Romanian, the adopted child of a man of wealth and taste - a prince’s boy - who becomes Dinu’s teacher in

the ways of the world. The love that Dinu has for Razvan lasts a lifetime and transcends lust, separation and even death.

This is a delicate, moving exquisite novel from one of our most celebrated of writers. I suggest that you read this while sipping a cut-glass full of Madeira and nibbling on a Madeleine. It evokes a dream-like state of reading; I found myself imagining that noises from outside my flat were in fact a horse and carriage delivering a bunch of lilies from Proust and inviting me to tea, and that the cries of the seagulls were in fact the songbirds of the Bois de Boulogne on a sultry summers day in 1927.

Paul Bailey will be at The Bookish Supper Society on Wednesday, March 26. Tickets from Brighton Dome ticket office: 01273 709709

The Book Doctor

Sea-swimmer, beard-wearer and biscuit-lover: Adam Stower, the talented illustrator behind this year’s Young City Reads title - Francesca Simon’s The Sleeping Army - has been drawing ever since he was old enough to hold a crayon.

He grew up in Switzerland by Lake Zurich and went to a boarding school in Norfolk during term-time. He studied illustration at Norwich Art School, gaining a first-class degree and went on to complete a master's in narrative illustration

at the University of Brighton. He has lived in Brighton ever since.

Speaking from his city-based studio, where the windows leak when it rains, he recalls that his first published illustration was in his school magazine when he was aged only nine. Since then, he has gone on to illustrate everything from wine-bottle labels to school mathematics books. He told me, however, that his favourite thing to illustrate is children’s fiction, especially children’s picture books.

It is something he is rather good at, too. In 2010, he won the Red House Book Award and, most recently, the Wanda Gag Read Aloud Book Award 2013 in

the United States. He has also been short-listed for numerous national as well as international awards, including the Dundee Children’s Picture Book Award 2013.

Adam loves sketchbooks and working with traditional materials. Apparently, when he was little, his red felt-tip pens were always the first to run out

because his drawings had a lot of fire, laser beams and superhero’s capes in them. He encourages all of us to get a sketchbook and to fill it with doodles from our imagination or sketches from real life. Aside from his illustration work for children, he also does regular editorial and advertising illustration work.

He visits schools and libraries, where he entertains children

with readings and live drawing demonstrations. Children from three primary schools that are taking part in this year’s Young City Reads met Adam on World Book Day at workshops at Jubilee Library and Whitehawk Library. He fired up their imaginations and got them drawing characters from The Sleeping Army, including the wonderfully-named Snot the Beserker.

Currently, Adam is impatiently waiting for the rain to stop dripping into his studio and for the sun to start shining.

And when it does, he will be downing pens and heading to the

beach for a spot of sea swimming. One of the joys, he says, of living and working in Brighton.

Laura Lockington@bookloversupper

Four things every Young City Reader needs to know about Adam...

■ His favourite author is Roald Dahl

■ He has worn a beard for so long he cannot remember what his face underneath looks like

■ His favourite food is freshly-baked bread - and biscuits. Let’s not forget the biscuits

■ He is appearing with Francesca Simon at Brighton Dome Concert Hall at 1.30pm on May 22 as part of Young City Reads at Brighton Festival. Tickets cost £3; visit: www. brightonfestival.org/cityreads.co.uk

Anyone with a sense of humour will almost certainly agree the recent performance of The Treason Show at Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham was an absolute hoot.

For me, it was one of the funniest things I have watched

for a long time. I particularly liked the Newhaven sketch - and the rendition of "24 hours from Telscombe" was hilarious.

Flushed with the success of purchasing those tickets, my girlfriend, Wendy, rushed out to buy tickets for what, according to her, promised to be another hilarious production, starring Steve Richards, with his Rock ‘n’ Roll Politics show.

We duly turned up ready for

another side-splitting Treason-type show and settled down somewhere near the front of the theatre. I could not help noticing that there was a completely different type of crowd from the audience at the previous show, many of whom I had known. The alarm bells should have sounded when I looked around at what seemed to be a fairly serious-looking audience.

Anyway, on came Steve Richards

who - looking fairly jovial - did a sort of ode to Tony Benn. He then went on to ask the audience what they thought of Tony Benn. Some seemed to like him, while some did not. Personally, I thought he was an odious individual, who - on the plus side - stuck to his principles; as he was born, however, with a silver spoon in his mouth and lived in Holland Park, he could afford to be principled. It did not seem a good time to say that, because the poor bloke had just passed away. So I bit my tongue and kept quiet.

Next we were told we were all going to have to pretend to be Nick Clegg for the evening. Which was about the time I realised I was not in for another fun-packed show. Steve wanted us all to think

about topics we would like to discuss during the evening and started writing down the audience suggestions on a flipchart.

There was a suggestion of discussing Europe and another couple of boring coalition topics. Then, I suggested we should discuss whether we thought we were really out of recession or was it all hype. Someone else wanted us to talk about Scotland and then another suggestion was to discuss how the media influences politics. Then, there was the far more popular suggestion of discussing the Russell Brand approach to politics. In the end, we discussed a mix of all the suggestions. Which is what our entertainer probably intended in the first instance. But it had worked as a good filler.

Anyway, there I was sitting with lots of these fairly-serious political types pretending we are all Nick Clegg and being asked to decide how we are going to act at the next election, if it is a hung parliament again. Do we side with Cameron or Miliband?

As someone who does not care much for either of them, I thought I would let some of the serious types get their point across before saying anymore.

Steve, however, was quickly moving us all along to pretend we were David Cameron now. Which was when I asked if I could go back to being Nick Clegg again for a minute.

Yes, I was informed; it was OK. So I suggested that - as I was now in a position of power, having

moved from being a fairly-useless individual if there was no hung parliament - I would like to see us all putting our political aims to one side and working together for the good of the country.

While I could hear a few noises of agreement from the crowd, there was also a bit of clucking from some of the unbendable types who are so entrenched in their political beliefs that they could work with no individual unless they are clearly of the same persuasion as themselves. I held on and suggested that it worked well enough in wartime; so why not have a bash at it now.

I went on to say that, whatever anyone, says we are in dire straights financially - as we have the biggest national debt

this country has ever seen. Also that all we are doing at present with all the austerity measures we have in place is to reduce the deficit of the amount the national debt is

accumulating by.I added that it should be illegal

for politicians to blatantly lie to us as they are currently doing; for example, either Cameron is telling the truth when he says the economy is now out of recession or Miliband is telling the truth when he says it is not.

I fancy the latter is more likely myself - and am convinced it is only by keeping interest rates at an all-time low for so long that we have avoided an absolute disaster.

Our host decided it was time to move on and, having pretended to be Cameron and then Miliband for a while, the show drew to an end.

I became engaged in a conversation with a very pleasant chap who was indeed interested and involved with politics himself. In the background, I could hear Wendy embroiled in a heated debate with a loud American woman on the subject of immigrants. I could hear this lady holding forth with the suggestion that we should not stop anyone coming to our shores. While I could hear advice being offered, equally forecfully, about whether she might be happier living in America.

I think that was probably about the time I decided - as the theatre was now clearing - it was time for us to leave too. It certainly had not been what we were expecting and I am not sure I would go again. But it will definitely teach me to read up on content before I agree to the next suggestion for a night out.

Tony Benn, who died at 88, is pictured speaking at Regent’s University London

I heard Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT, speak at a meeting commemorating the 30th anniversary of the miners' strike. Two days later, at 52, he was dead.In the same week, Tony Benn, one of the giants of the socialist and Labour movement, passed away at the age of 88.

New Labour journalists - including Patrick Wintour, in The Guardian - wrote obituaries of Tony Benn, full of platitudes and devoid of content.

Ed Miliband paid his tribute, frightened of his own shadow and scared of saying anything controversial, in case he was accused of being a socialist. Even David Cameron’s tribute was more generous.

It was Boris Johnson, though, who took the Tony Blair award for hypocrisy. Throughout his tenure, the London Mayor refused to meet Bob Crow. When he was certain

he was dead, Johnson wittered on about how “shocked” he was at the death of political rival - "a fighter and a man of character".

Bob Crow and Tony Benn could not have come from more different backgrounds. Benn was born into privilege as Anthony Wedgwood Benn, the son of Viscount Stansgate; Bob Crow was what John Lennon described as a genuine working-class hero, the son of an East End docker. He represented a dying breed of trade union leader, one who placed the interests of his members above himself.

Benn was unique in that he moved to the left during his ministerial career as he saw the undemocratic way in which senior civil servants saw their purpose as to blunt the radicalism of Labour governments.

When Thatcher defeated "Sunny Jim" Callaghan in 1979,

Benn drew the appropriate conclusions. Whereas many on the Labour right sought to adapt to the new zeitgeist, Benn saw Thatcher’s setting the people free meant short-term bribery and the handing over of national assets to the financial sharks and hedge funds who subsequently did so much to cause the 2008 financial crisis.

It is one of ironies of the "free market" today that instead of going to the wall, mouths are stuffed with gold.

The banks were "too big to fail", yet George Osborne seeks to

privatise them once again, whatever their share price. There used to be a time when lame ducks went to the wall; now they get a luxury life-raft.

Benn was determined the Labour movement should draw the lessons from previous failures of Labour governments. To that end, there began a movement to democratise the Labour Party, with constituency parties having the right to de-select sitting members.

Today, the Labour Party - a

creation of the trade unions, socialist parties and the Fabians - is the alternative party of capitalism. The trade union bloc vote counteracted the bloc vote that Eton and the City exercise on the Conservative Pary.

Benn will go down as one of the great constitutional reformers.

With Kinnock leading the way, New Labour took over the Labour Party in the 1990s. They were determined to eradicate all traces of socialism. Tony Blair’s scrapping of Clause 4 meant that Labour had no principles or guidelines.

If there is one word that sums up Benn’s career, it is democracy. He wanted Labour MPs to represent their constituents not themselves. The expenses scandal was, above all, a consequence of their unaccountability.

In his obituary, Patrick Wintour said some old ministerial colleagues would say nothing. Their "bitterness" against Benn’s movement for democracy in the Labour Party was undiminished.

In the words of Joe Hill, of the American labour movement known as “the Wobblies”: Don’t mourn. Organise.

The Greys savedA Brighton pub that is well-known for its live acoustic music has been saved from closure for the third time in two years. The Greys, in Southover Street, reopened yesterday (Thursday) under the management of Sharon Barr. Ms Barr, who owns The Zone Bar in St James’s Street, ran the Gay Village Party at Brighton Pride 2012.

Religion

New bishopThe new bishop for Brighton and Hove said that he would ordain women. Richard Jackson, the Bishop of Lewes, will be the first bishop to do so in the Diocese of Chichester, which includes Brighton and Hove. The 53-year-old father of three said: “I’m hoping to be a bishop for everybody. I will be ordaining women to the ministry. I am very much looking forward to the first ordination of women priests by a serving bishop in the diocese in June.”

Crime

Pensioner targetedFraud-by-mail scams are costing pensioners across Sussex millions of pounds. Sussex Police said that it has become the first force to quantify the scale of such fraud: “Criminals worldwide are sending millions of scam letters into the UK, targeting elderly vulnerable members of our communities. ”If you know someone who may be a victim, contact Sussex Police on 101 or email [email protected]."

Health

Protecting patientsCapita, the outsourcing company, is to spend three months helping health and social care chiefs in Brighton and Hove work out how to provide better care for frail people in the city. Goals include cutting the number of drug addicts, mental health patients and homeless people turning up at Accident and Emergency at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, as well as cutting the number of readmissions of frail people and reducing overcrowding.

Education

Academy concernDerek Trimmer, headteacher of Hove Park School, has offered reassurance to those worried about the prospect of the school becoming an academy. He said the governors were under a duty to make strategic decisions in the best interests of the school and its pupils; exploring whether to become an academy was just one of the options. He said parents, staff and the community would be consulted. Govenors will meet on Monday, March 31.

Music

Abba anniversaryBrighton Dome is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Abba winning the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton by giving fans a chance to perform on the same stage. The Swedish group won in 1974 with its hit song Waterloo. Organisers are looking for people to take part in a video installation in which participants will be given headphones and allowed to sing and dance along to the hit.

Politics

Benn tributeTributes have been paid to Tony Benn, the former Labour MP and cabinet minister who died at his London home at the age of 88. Among them was one from Ivor Caplin, the former Labour MP for Hove and defence minister who said Mr Benn was a charismatic figure and “an immense character in the Labour movement”.

Charity

Breaking groundA ceremonial turf-cutting took place to mark the start of work on building the new £6 million Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre opposite the Sussex Cancer Centre in Bristol Gate, where thousands of patients are treated each year. Peter Field, Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, and two former cancer patients, Della Lamden and Margaret Ticehurst, were among those who attended. A final £1.27 million is needed before the centre can open next year.

Councillors are planning to spend more than £9 million on transport projects over the next year - with a focus on maintaining, managing and improving the city’s roads, pavements, street lights and seafront arches. The proposals form part of the city’s Local Transport Plan for 2014-15.Among the proposals are:

■ £2.6 million on essential strengthening of the A259 Kings Road Arches to complete the work around the West Pier;■ £1 million for road reconstruction to help avoid

the need to spend money on the future repair of potholes;■ £1 million to transform the Brighton Station area;■ £650,000 to renew the Vogue Gyratory, including new traffic lights, resurfacing and a segregated cycle lane;

■ £600,000 on upgrading and replacing the £10 million plus worth of street lighting in the city with modern low energy units;■ £200,000 to help improve pavements across the city, mainly on well used corridors.

A digital media agency has become the first enterprise in Sussex to benefit from the Connection Voucher Scheme, which provides funding of up to £3,000 for small businesses and charities or voluntary organisations to access faster broadband connection speeds. Landlords or tenants in shared commercial buildings can also pool their vouchers to pay for a shared connection with very high bandwidth.

The scheme uses Super Connected Cities funding from the government’s Department for Culture Media and Sport.Brighton and Hove City Council has issued the first voucher to Tilt (www.wearetilt.com), with Metranet, a local wireless internet service provider. The Brighton company had struggled to find an affordable solution to their slow broadband problem, which occasionally resulted in employees having to run to coffee shops to upload work.

Jon Malyon, managing director, said: “Four years ago we were a three people and a dog start-up. Our business broadband package suited us fine to begin with, but we found, as we grew and employed more people, we desperately needed more bandwidth.” Brighton and Hove was one of a number of cities across the United Kingdom to be selected as part of a government scheme to offer businesses better access to high-speed quality broadband. There is £1.5 million for vouchers in the city.

For the third successive year, members of the charity’s team will set out from Preston Park on April 6 with just one thing on their mind: to complete the 26 demanding miles, in the Brighton Marathon, raising not only greater awareness for the charity but also funds for the invaluable and essential work they do for the city. With only 15 days to go, however, the team needs support. Each member of the team is from a local business that supports the outstanding work of the charity and how it positively affects our

Rest assured, any third phase of 20mph speed limits in the city would not cost £1.5 million as reported (March 14). We have £520,000 budgeted for the next financial year for various speed reduction measures across the city as a whole. One of these is consultation on Phase 3, which would cover Hangleton,

Woodingdean, Ovingdean, Saltdean and Rottingdean. We think this is important work as interim monitoring has shown that speeds have come down on 74% of streets where we have introduced 20mph, bringing a drop in collisions and injuries Cutting accidents and injuries is money well spent - and residents in the Phase 3 area will be asked this summer if they want 20mph in their streets.

It has been shown that you are up to seven times more likely to survive being hit by a car at 20mph compared to 30mph. We hope people will therefore support this proven way of making their street safer for their children.

Aquarium Terraces: a sorry sagathat has no obvious end in sight

Above the doorways linger the words “Fun”, “Amusements” and “Leisure”. But you will find none of those things there any more.

Affixed to the glass may still be a licensing notification, dated October 2012. But you cannot get a drink here. Or anything else.

All is dark.It was supposed to be the

trendiest of locations. But, 14 years after it first opened, the Aquarium Terraces development in Madeira Drive remains a depressing dump.

With the enforced closure last December (with loss of Christmas bookings) of the popular Terraces Grill and Bar, only two of the upper units are now occupied: the Harvester pub, next to the Sea Life Centre, and Burger King.

There has long been an atmosphere of neglect and decay about the place. Parts are boarded off, including some steps down from Marine Parade; there are graffiti; lamps are broken or

defective; rags of flags flap in the wind. Many units have never been occupied; others have seen businesses, like that amusement arcade, come and go. The blight extends into nearby Max Miller Walk.

How distant now seem those turn-of-the-century promises. There were going to be eight upmarket restaurants and bars, we were told, “all with outdoor seating areas where visitors will be able to enjoy panoramic sea views”, and, in Unit 9, one of the largest nightclubs in the country. The scheme, according to the developers’ spiel, was going to “revitalise Marine Parade and boost Brighton’s reputation as the fun capital of the south”.

But those eateries never happened. Those crowds “walking along, having a drink and taking in the sea air,” never materialised. Various applications for the massive nightclub - to the relief of local residents - never reached fruition. (That unit is currently a gym.)

Five years ago, the original developers, Compco, sold the lease on to a company called

Brighton Seafront Regeneration. But despite glittering promises of a motoring museum, a dance school, a six-bedroom boutique hotel, a Bistrotech restaurant, and such, they have so far failed to live up to their name.

Oddly, it was they who closed the best business, The Terraces bar, with the intention of removing what is arguably the only attractive architectural feature, the pavilion structure it was in, while Burger King, which they promised to close, remains.

Large parts of the original listed structure were destroyed or detrimentally altered back in 2000, to make way for this lamentable development.

I remember watching the copper roof of the lift tower being demolished at 6am on a Saturday - presumably an hour when nobody at the council could be alerted. Lots of fine solid Edwardian steps and stonework, as well as the old Concorde venue, were bulldozed to make way for the current characterless congeries. The corrugated roof compromises sea-views from Marine Parade and has to be

edged with unsightly anti-intruder wiring.

A hundred years ago, this terrace was a centre of community vitality. There was dancing and promenading, skating and bands. Then, more recently, the area was occupied by a funfair, with go-karts and dodgems, a clairvoyant’s booth, and the famous Viking swing boat. These were at least traditional seaside entertainments, whereas what has replaced them is something blandly generic that could be anywhere.

I do not know what can be done with this ongoing mess, particularly in the present economic climate.

Maybe the whole site needs rethinking from scratch. At least our planners should learn from their previous mistakes, particularly about not swallowing developers’ hype and about preserving structures with character and history that do not need replacing anyway.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 received Royal Assent on November 30 2000. It gives a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by public authorities, including Brighton and Hove City Council. It sets out exemptions from that right and places a number of obligations on the council. In August last year, Brighton & Hove Independent revealed the council was planning a radical shift towards greater transparency in a pioneering agreement with mySociety, a charity that helps people “become more powerful in the civic and democratic parts of their lives”.

Student entrepreneurs compete for chance of £50k start-up prize

Student entrepreneurs from City College Brighton and Hove are getting close to turning their business dreams into reality with a £50,000 prize fund.

The Young Start-up Talent initiative is aimed at 16- to 25-year-olds who have that special spark to start up in business.

In the hotly-contested semi-final of the Dragon’s-Den-style competition, 14 young businessmen and women were selected to pitch their ideas to leading professionals.

Among companies represented were Mayo Wynne Baxter, Juice FM, and Harvey Fowler Accountancy.

Six finalists were chosen, among them Ricardo Mwe-Di-Mailila, who was pitching his

business Treble & Base, an online musical platform for start-up artists.

William Sudan, a former City College business student, was also chosen after pitching White Eyebrow - a healthy antioxidant-packed tea in a bottle.

Ricardo, William and the other four young finalists were offered support donated by local

businesses, including mentoring, accountancy, legal advice, marketing, branding, printing, a laptop, and IT support. They were also offered further mentoring before the final at City College on Tuesday.

The winner will be announced at a showcase event on April 22 at Brighton Racecourse.

CompetitionWIN TWO TICKETS TO CINEWORLDFOR YOUR CHANCE TO WIN TWO TICKETS TO CINEWORLD BRIGHTON ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION:

Q. LEAD ACTOR, JACK O’CONNELL, ALSO STARS IN WHICH HIT TV SERIES? A. SKINS B. DOWNTON ABBEY C. DOCTOR WHO

A ruthless prison survival story with a breakout performance by British actor Jack O’Connell

Gripping and sharply written British drama that offers an intriguing twist on the usual prison movie clichés and features a star-making performance from Jack O’Connell.

What’s it all about?Directed by David Mackenzie, Starred Up (a prison term referring to a young offender transferred to an adult prison

for excessive violent behaviour) opens with teenager Eric Love (Jack O’Connell) being processed, stripped and shown to his jail cell as he’s transferred to an adult facility where his estranged

father Nev (Ben Mendelsohn) is also an inmate. Shortly afterwards, Eric runs foul of the prison authorities when he violently beats a fellow prisoner

in the mistaken belief that he was under attack; in the subsequent fight, Eric proves he’s more than capable of holding his own against the screws, but volunteer therapist Oliver (Rupert Friend)

persuades the governor to let Eric join his anger management group, believing he can help.

The GoodO’Connell delivers a star-making performance as Eric, dialling down his usual wise-cracking

jack-the-lad persona in favour of something altogether darker, simmering with pent-up violence and a wily cunning borne of previous prison experience – a masterful early sequence leaves us in no doubt that Eric can handle himself: no sooner has his cell door closed than he’s fashioning a shiv using a razor blade, a lighter and a toothbrush and making a

makeshift screwdriver so as to hide his weapon in his light fittings.

The GreatThe script is excellent and the concept of an estranged father and son bonding in jail offers an intriguing twist on the usual prison movie dynamics. In addition, Mackenzie maintains an atmosphere of nail-biting tension throughout, broken up with powerful and shocking moments of violence.

On top of that, the film has a subtle but important message

about the system’s failure to reach out to angry young men and the action builds to a superb, edge-of-your-seat climax, even if it does stretch credulity a little. Great final shot too.

Worth seeing?Starred Up is a powerfully emotional, nail-bitingly tense and breath-takingly violent British prison drama with an intriguing, cliché-bending script and a pair of terrific performances from Jack O’Connell and Ben Mendelsohn. Highly recommended.

True independence is rare in Brighton and Hove. Peel back the layers and often you will find cleverly-constructed marketing companies, ownership by larger, more corporate brands, and an underwhelming sensation that your decaf soya latte is not really sticking it to the man, merely filling their pockets even more.

This is why Marwood is so wildly refreshing.

Opening its doors in November 2010, Marwood is tucked away on the corner of Ship Street, partly on the site of the old Post Office. Richard Grills, manager and all-round lovely bloke, took over the premises on a whim after returning from a stint running pop-up bars in Melbourne, Australia.

The Marwood is a tricky establishment to categorise. Split over two large floors and a

fantastically-bright garden, the “café” is not really a café and it is not really a coffee shop either, nor a restaurant.

What Richard has created is a community space that serves great food, well-priced alcohol and superb coffee. Make use of The Marwood as you will. Personally, I adore whiling away an afternoon sipping tea and eating slices of their homemade cake.

“People either love it or hate it,” Richard says, over a cup of coffee. The bohemian, laid-back community ethos may not be to everyone’s taste. “This is silver service in jeans,” he jokes.

The space at The Marwood is always filled to the brim, especially over lunchtime and it was easy to see why, once I had tasted the Devil’s Toast - spicy chorizo on sourdough, topped with tomato, goat’s cheese, chilli and garlic (£5.95).

This calibre of food is not what you would expect to eat while sitting in an old rocking chair

and dining off a pre-loved table. Well-presented, the spicy chorizo was thickly sliced and lay glowing a reddish hue across a thick piece of lightly-toasted bread. Not overpowering, the sausage went beautifully with the rotund slice of warm goat’s cheese.

Topped with a grilled tomato, this (questionable) fruit provided a wetness to the plate and paired well with the dryer ingredients. Finished off with a dazzling dressing containing a mild balsamic, fine shallot and garlic, as well as a side salad, the Devil’s Toast was more like the work of God, as opposed to Beelzebub.

Other dishes include hangover breakfasts (complete with Bloody Mary), daily specials, nachos and soup of the day. All very reasonably priced and of a truly

great level of cooking. With weekly events including

open mic, quizzes, bingo, artists’ residences and soon-to-be supper clubs, Rich and the Marwood team have it nailed with their off-the-wall approach and generous helpings of great food, cake and coffee.

I understand the importance of why we have corporate chains and how precious they can be to the economy (hell, my part-time bread and butter is working for one of the biggest brands in the world). But the world we live in needs the independents, too.

Long live The Marwood and the thriving community space that it provides to Brighton and Hove.

Grape of the Week

This little beauty has been cultivated in France for well over 1,000 years - with the first official mention found in official documents dating to about 845 AD.

It is one of the most important varieties used by white-wine producers in the Loire Valley - and its crystalline acidity and ability to age well has seen a boom in its popularity over the last 30 years.

The refreshing mineral whites associated with the Loire are delicious and, when you compare them with the honey-sweet golden whites of the South African Stellenbosch, highly prized since the 17th century, you start to see the range of this lovely grape.

It also produces some spectacular dessert wines when allowed to develop a friendly fungus called Botrytis (noble rot), which concentrates the fruit’s sugars, producing flavours of baked apple and quince.

Pair crisper, oaked wines with fresh seafood and fish, soft goat’s cheese and summer vegetables. Pair sweeter whites with spiced meats (especially pork), a chicken liver parfait, or fresh summer fruits.

Malta and its craggy-faced little brother, Gozo - along with the tiny Comino - is a joyful archipelago to visit.

Populated by all manner of invading forces throughout its turbulent past, Malta is a glorious hybrid of cultures and customs.

The Maltese islands are part-Italian, part-Moor, a little bit Spanish, a fraction French, and have a strong line of Anglo-oxygenated blood in them.

In fact, the United Kingdom was the last indomitable power to hold sway over the islands from whom they seceded in 1964.

This cross-pollination has left the indelible marks of the rise of one empire and the fall of another; it has created a spot in the Mediterranean almost unlike any other. And that is a really good thing.

Valletta, the imperious, stony-faced capital, was formed atop a rocky peninsula and imposes

itself as robustly now as it did when it was built hundreds of years ago by the Knights of St John; the party district called St Julian’s captures the engaging and lively spirit of the republic; and, across the main island, history slaps you across the face around every corner.

Small wonder Malta has been described as one big open-air museum.

In this ethereal landscape, activities abound everywhere. Unsurprisingly, for a small group of islands set in the Mediterranean, water sports rule the waves.

A big scuba-diving destination, Malta may not have the “Oh-my-God-it’s-Nemo” factor of the Red Sea resorts a few hours further east, but the seas are warm - particularly in summer - and there are some decent dives around in crystalline waters.

Many, however, prefer the top of the water and will know Malta from Brighton-based Swimtrek’s highly-popular guided swimming holidays.

Then, of course, the usual aquatic feast is served, including

windsurfing and sea-kayaking. Malta is also a premier sailing destination, hosting the yearly Rolex Middle Sea Race.

Dry-land adventure is led by world-class rock-climbing. The land lends itself to variety of climbing styles - from traditional and sport climbing, to bouldering, deep-water soloing, and sea-level traversing. More than 1,300 “routes” have been identified, each under almost perpetual sunshine.

And hills and trails networked across the islands are ripe for cycling, walking and even running holidays. Look out for the aptly-named Hellfire 55-kilometre trail run, which is coming up on April 26. Ultra-runners and mountain-bikers will traverse the 55k route - which is, in effect, a circumnavigation of Gozo.

Cliff-edge tracks, valleys, sandy beaches, and rocky ascents define the race, which should be more than enough for the hardiest of athletes.

Where Oliver Reed drank his last drink and Russell Crowe slayed a multitude as Gladiator, Malta is more than a small island republic just a lick and spit from the United Kingdom. It is the heart of the Mediterranean and its soul lives within us all.

Chefs from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom swapped kitchens in the 2014 International Chef Exchange (ICEx).

Bas Oonk, of Basaal in The Hague, and Michael Bremner, of 64 Degrees in Brighton, hosted gourmet suppers in each other’s kitchens to showcase their culinary skills and the artisan produce of their home regions of Zuid Holland and Sussex.

Mr Oonk said: “It’s been a great

experience for our team. Having the chance to show Den Haag’s finest producers and restaurateurs gave us a new appreciation of our home city.

“Our visit to Brighton was inspiring and we were not only made to feel very welcome but also impressed by the way that the city embraces the restaurant industry. Our relationship with Michael and 64 Degrees will definitely continue.”

ICEx is an initiative created in

early 2012 by the Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival to promote food tourism, share best practice in the hospitality industry, and create a platform for international trade in quality food and drink.

In addition to the suppers, the chefs also undertake a food tour of each region meeting local producers and restaurateurs, including the Van Kleef distillery, in Den Haag, and the award-winning Ridgeview Wine Estate, in Sussex.

Hilton The Hague and Hilton Brighton Metropole also hosted cocktail masterclasses with top mixologists from each city.

Previous exchanges have taken place between Sussex and Maastricht, Lyon and Rotterdam, with forthcoming exchanges with

chefs from across the south east of England to Sweden, Finland and Dubai.

ICEx is being filmed by Latest TV for a new six-part television series to be screened in the summer.

Nick Mosley, project coordinator, said: “International Chef Exchange

has really snowballed over the past year or so and we’re actively looking for more chefs across the world to participate not only in the cultural exchange but also in the television series.”

HealthFitness fads are sprouting upbut you have to be careful

Believe it or not, fitness fads are not a recent invention. For more than 3,000 years, we have sought new and exciting ways to remain healthy and increase our physical fitness.

Whether we are talking about Milo of Croton, who in the sixth century BC lifted a bull daily to increase his strength, or the amalgamation of salsa and merengue music to create Zumba in the early 1990s - and let us not forget Wii Fit in the Noughties - fads and trends move rapidly and are ever-evolving.

Of course, as one of the most dynamic and changeable regions of the country, the people of East Sussex know that not all fads withstand the test of time. Unless anybody can confirm any bull-lifting sightings in Preston Park?

We are almost a quarter of the way through 2014 and at the start of year it was reported that the fads of this year will be: bodyweight training, heavy technology…and Brussels-sprout diets!

Although I did consider entering the debate on the positive influence sprouts have on an individual’s diet, I decided against it, having banished them from my household this Christmas.

This brings me to bodyweight training, which has been used for a long time now as a convenient and favoured way to exercise – because it incorporates your natural range of movement coupled with the fact that it is free.

Bodyweight training is so widespread because you access all body parts to become your own personal gym.

Although bodyweight training is a fantastic method of exercise, I always have to err on the side of caution with respect to the

practicability of certain exercises, because they require significant elements of coordination, balance and strength. And that is before you even begin.

Take three of the most famous - and sometimes infamous - exercises in the repertoire of a personal trainer: burpees; the plank; and the sit-up. If done incorrectly, any of these three exercises can cause significant injury to your lower back and knees.

The old British chestnut of “no pain, no gain,” is relevant here. And I must stress that is absolutely the wrong mentality.

When attempting bodyweight exercises, it is of paramount importance that you do not stretch yourself to failure: a state where you cannot do anymore. Of equal importance, you should always consider your alignment - especially during squats, lunges and burpees. This should be taken into consideration before you even consider what your end-goals and overall ambitions are.

I do not look forward to driving past Palmeira Square or the Hove Lawns; I often shudder at the poor choice of some personal trainers and their weight-training enthusiasts.

Motoring

First impressionsTaking what’s effectively a VW Golf GTI engine, dropping it into a car from a couple of sectors below and adding four-wheel drive sounds like a crazy recipe. And it’s good, very good.

The S1 combines everything drivers loved about the A1 quattro – the performance and the looks – with all the strong points of a regular A1.

At £24,900 for the three-door, it’s not exactly cheap, costing around £1,200 less than a Golf GTI. But if you’re after a small, fast hatchback and want something a bit more premium and a bit more exclusive than a Ford Fiesta ST or Renaultsport Clio – not to mention with extra performance – look no further.

PerformanceThe 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor lurking in the S1’s short nose kicks out a healthy 231hp. Mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system, it means the 0-62mph sprint is dispatched in 5.8 seconds.

It feels every bit as strong, too, helped by a 273lb ft swell of torque. And that’s available

from around 1,800rpm, the engine pulling strongly from there through the mid-range and hurling the S1 down the road with a gruff, turbocharged four-cylinder roar piped back into the cabin. It sounds very good indeed.

InteriorMost are fans of the regular Audi A1’s interior – it’s by far and away the nicest cabin in the sector. So adding a few S model touches has finished it off beautifully.

Quality is extremely high, as you’d expect, and every surface is cloaked in leather and soft-touch plastic, which makes the S1 a delight both to cruise and charge around in. This is a grownup and refined small hot hatchback.

There’s not much room in the back, so don’t expect to be carrying passengers far, if at all.

Economy and safetyDespite that 2.0 turbo motor and all-wheel drive doing its best to sap efficiency, fuel economy and CO2 emissions are impressive at a claimed 40.2mpg combined with 162g/km for the three-door. This falls to 39.8mpg with 166g/km CO2 for the Sportback.

Based on the regular A1, the

S1 gets the same full five-star EuroNCAP crash safety rating, while that ever-present four-wheel-drive traction, plenty of electronic driver aids and big brakes should ensure great stability and peace of mind.

The verdictThe 2014 Audi S1 is something of a surprise. You may worry that it might feel a bit overblown, that 231hp in a supermini-sized body would be too much for the chassis to deal with. But fear not.

It’s supple and controlled, and rides well – probably the biggest revelation from the car’s launch. That engine is stonking, with loads of sustained shove linked to plenty of reassuring grip.

Then there’s the impressive interior quality you’d expect from an expensive Audi.

But that’s the S1’s drawback: price. It’s £7,905 more than a Ford Fiesta ST, even if it is more powerful and more premium, that’s a big price to pay for the extras – literally.

Combined with a few practicality issues not present in most of its rivals, that’s the only reason the S1 is a four-star car. On performance, handling and quality alone, it’s top of the class.

Audi S1 delights with electrifying pace

The 2014 Audi A3 Cabriolet is a vast improvement on the previous model

If you are a parent, you are probably more used to thinking about what you can do for your child - or what you are willing to do for them, but would rather

not. For example, use your hands to stop their sick ending up on the sofa.

What you might not have been doing is thinking about what

they can do for you. Time for that to change, I say

Let me give you some ideas to kick start the process:

■ Your child can be especially useful when you want to communicate in an indirect or passive-aggressive manner. This works best before the child can talk: “Liam, could you tell Daddy that he’s forgotten his shoes don’t go there!”;■ If you do not want to queue for something, your child can help you skip to the front. This

usually works best if the child is in distress; it is more a case of seizing the opportunity than causing deliberate upset;■ Children are great for carrying things around for you, provided they are not breakable, valuable or precious in any way. Buy them a fun backpack and pop the item in it; you will be free of carrying duty for at least 10 minutes;

■ Your child can get you out of almost any situation. Cannot face seeing that friend today?

Want to leave work early? Need to cut short a phone-call? Your child is the perfect excuse/ reason every time.

No need to thank me. I consider it my duty to share this wisdom with my fellow parents in Brighton and Hove.

Let me know what you manage to add to the list.

Straight from the commentary box

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Great film. Fair to say it could also be applied to the smorgasbord of football kits that have been released over the years. I think it’s fair to say that the seagulls have had their fair share of ‘distinctive’ outfits throughout their history.

I think every fan will have their favourite and we must wait and see what Nike will deliver for next season as the club announce the sportswear

brand as it’s kit provider for the 2014/15 season. It’s a huge boost to have a big name signed up, especially ahead of the move to Lancing and the new training ground and academy.

Looking back as a football fan their have been some shockers. My personal favourite, or most disgusting, was Coventry City’s Admiral away strip in brown and yellow. As a commentator, the quadrants of Blackburn or Bristol Rovers are a nightmare. The yellow numbers this year

have not helped when, like at Bolton, you are 2 miles from the action, but generally it’s not too bad for home players.

As far as the Albion are concerned, I really liked the lime and green away kit last season but the yellow this year is still decent. There are a myriad of excellent websites and twitter addresses that have brilliant retro shots of classic get-ups from the past.

Soon we will get a view of the new kit for next season. Expectation will be high but we will have to see if it enters the Hall of Fame. Good, bad or ugly.

couple of impressive trophies that supporters will never have seen too – I could go on for ages.

“One of my favourites is the headboard from the Seagulls Express train that took me and hundreds of others to away games in the late 1970s.

“Probably the biggest ‘wow factor‘ though belongs to the supremely detailed scale models by the multi-talented Alan Budgen. Youngsters will certainly like the Goldstone turnstile with its evocative ‘clickety-

of the exhibits fondly – and there are seats to rest any weary legs! I hope fans of all ages and experience will enjoy having a go on our Albion Quiz machine.

AITC is making its debut appearance at this summer’s Brighton Fringe Festival with two events announced this week.

The Open Minds Living Library event, which will take place on Monday, May 12 at the University of Sussex is part of AITC’s Gamechangers initiative which aims to help beat stigma around mental health. The event will see Gamechanger volunteers, all with lived experience of mental

health tell their stories to the public alongside awareness workshops, an art exhibition and music from local band Tragic Roundabout.

The Gamechangers project which has seen volunteers directly engage with over 700 people since its launch in April 2013 is funded by Time to Change, England’s biggest programme to end the stigma and discrimination faced by people with mental health

problems. The programme is run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, and funded by the Department of Health and Comic Relief. For more details about the event and the project e-mail [email protected].

AITC will also be part of a special street soccer event on May 31, between 1-5pm on the site of the city’s old Municipal Market on Circus Street.

Brighton boast the biggest average attendance in the Football League and now that bumper crop of Seagulls can find out more about the club they love.

The highly-anticipated club museum has opened to supporters next to Dick’s Bar at The Amex and season ticket holders, Young Seagulls members and those fans on the Bronze and Blue schemes receive one free entry per season.

For everyone else the cost is a modest £4 for adults or £2 for concessions – with tickets available from the club shop.

It will be open Monday to Thursday (various times – see club website) every week and 10am to 2pm on non-match day Saturdays and 9am until 11am on Saturdays when the Seagulls are at home.

And, as museum curator and Albion historian Tim Carder explained, there is a lot to see.

He said: “We have some real gems for the shirt aficionados, with more to come. There are a

We will have to see if the kit enters the Hall of Fame. Good, bad or ugly”

Last season’s lime and green away kit was a favourite with Albion fans

Last weekend’s double at Bolton Wanderers announced Will Buckley’s return to form after an injury-disrupted opening few months of the season. Brighton’s first ever £1 million signing remains a key figure in the Albion’s attack – providing both genuine pace and width as well as some much-needed support for Leo Ulloa. A sight to behold when on top form, a fully fit Buckley is a real asset to the Albion.

Last week it was a question of Gordon Greer or Lewis Dunk – this time Oscar Garcia has to decide which central defenders to pair after the Albion impressed without Matthew Upson.

The former England defender sat out his first league game – indeed his first minutes – since his arrival last season as the Seagulls secured an impressive 2-0 win away at Bolton Wanderers.

Dunk and Greer kept the barn door bolted in his absence – leaving Albion’s head coach with a tricky decision ahead of tomorrow’s (Saturday) home game with Ipswich Town. The Brighton back line leads the division in terms of stinginess – leaking a league low 28 goals from their 35 matches and chalking up 17 clean sheets.

Lewis Dunk has only started two league games this campaign – against QPR and Bolton – but contributed to shut-outs in both games. If, as is likely, Oscar opts for the ever-dependable Upson and club captain Greer, Dunk can certainly consider himself unlucky to miss out.

After weeks of profligacy in attacking areas the Albion have managed two goals in both of the team’s last two games – suggested the frontline of Will Buckley, Leo Ulloa and on-loan Jesse Lingard is

starting to gel. It would be a huge surprise if the trio did not start against The Tractor Boys tomorrow in the first of a run of must-win home games for the Seagulls.

Rohan Ince – increasingly the rock on which Albion’s best performances are built – should continue in midfield, with Keith Andrews, Jake Forster-Caskey and Dale Stephens competing for remaining two central slots.

Forster-Caskey in particular has impressed and improved in equal measure while playing the majority of the team’s last three games. The 19-year-old played well during the 2-0 home win against QPR and deserves a continued run in the starting line-up.

Brighton’s visitors find themselves in ninth place in the Championship standings and know a defeat in Sussex could cast

them adrift of the Play-Off picture.Mick McCarthy has been

without talismanic centre forward David McGoldrick since he suffered ligament damage during a 0-0 game with Blackpool last month. The forward had registered 14 goals and four assists and was man of the match when the Albion lost at Portman Road earlier this season.

In his absence Ipswich have favoured a 4312 formation with nine goal Daryl Murphy carrying the goal-scoring burden.

One player the Albion midfield would be wise to keep a close eye on is pint-sized Crystal Palace loanee Johnathan Williams. The talented midfield was tipped to make a big impression in the Premier League with his parent club and will no doubt be keen to put one over the Eagles rivals.

Will Buckley will rightly get the accolades today, but the others will be equally happy to have kept the defensive record intact.

“We came up against a difficult system but we were able to control things in the way we wanted to and we got the first goal and made them change which we were pleased about.

“We are also pleased with our position - but it’s important nobody gets carried away as there are eleven games to go and in the league a lot can happen in that time. I was at Charlton last year and looking at relegation but then we won eight out of the last ten games and narrowly missed out on the play-offs so there is a long, long way to go.”
