RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS OF ICE-HT (1/7)
Innovative solutions for fuel cells• New electrocatalysts (bimetallic and tri-metallic) which are used as
anodes for low temperature PEM fuel cells. The new anodes are durable and offer high tolerance to CO. Thus, they are valuable for clean energy production from (reformation) hydrogen in a reliable and controlled manner .
• Innovative polymeric materials which are used for the production of high temperature PEM fuel cells (150-200oC). The advantages of the operation of a fuel cell at these temperatures are: (a) use of common purity H2, (b) obviation of the need for humidification of the gaseous reactants, (c) higher catalyst activity and easier heat manipulation.

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS OF ICE-HT (2/7)
Mictrotechnology and Bioanalysis
• Innovative microfluidics device (chip) for PCR
and RT-PCR analysis (Nature 422, 28, (2003) )
• Development of a novel micro-capillary electrophoresis device and laser fluorescence sensor for the analysis of genetically engineered food .
New bioluminescent proteins in Bioanalysis• Use of Gaussia photopherase as a label for high sensitivity DNA
hybridization analysis

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS OF ICE-HT (3/7)
Nanotechnology in Molecular Diagnosis • Innovative biosensor for DNA hybridization analysis based on the
coupling of gold nano-particles with oligo-nucleotides .
High-sensitivity methods for antigen identification• Use of RNA polymerase as label for antigen identification .

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS OF ICE-HT (4/7)
Innovative Materials• New photonic polymers with controlled color of
emitted light. In particular, there have been synthesized copolymers of oligo-fluorene which emit steady blue light.
• Transparent thermo-insulating plates based on SiO2aero-gels having the highest known optical transparency and the lowest thermal conductivity of all known materials. They can be used in the construction of double windows and heavy duty refrigerators. Their use can reduce energy consumption in the heating or cooling of buildings up to 20%, and up to 60% for refrigeration.
• Development of new catalysts for the production of high quality carbon nanotubes (mono-layer and multi-layer) through catalyzed vapor deposition. High yields are achieved and the production cost is very competitive.

Chemical Engineering and Biomedicine
• Innovative non-invasive spectroscopic method for identification of drugs in the aqueous humor of the anterior chamber in the eye between the lens and the cornea.
• Innovative method for non-invasive early diagnosis of the onset of cerebral-edema, caused by cranocerebral injuries.
• Particle size analyzer for non-spherical particles with axial symmetry such as bacteria, red blood cells, etc.
• Innovative method for the encapsulation of substances with anti-microbial action in polymeric matrices for improved drug release control.

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS OF ICE-HT (6/7)Simulation tools for specific applications
• Computer simulator for the production of thin films of electronic materials on suitably patterned substrates, with physicochemical driving forces (instead of using conventional lithography) as a critical step in the emerging technology of integrated circuits based on ink-jet printing techniques. Contract work for a major Japanese company.

Patras, July 19 2005
• Computer simulator for the prediction of the spreading and natural attenuation of mixtures of hazardous organic substances (insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, other liquid organic pollutants, etc.) in the soil and risk assessment concerning the pollution of aquifers and bodies surface water.
• Package of innovative computer codes for the analysis of the interaction between waves (electromagnetic, acoustic, thermoelastic, etc.) with scatterers (solid bodies) of any type, using the Boundary Elements Method (BEM). Very fast and user-friendly, the only one based on BEM.
• Computer simulator of the displacement of oil by water in oil reservoirs, during secondary and tertiary oil recovery. The first simulator worldwide which incorporates the true mechanisms of two-phase flow in porous rock formations.
