Task 4: SWOT Analysis 2 (Zing PFC - Local Business)

LO: To be able to apply the SWOT analysis tool to understand the curent position of an

SME (Small-Medium Enterprise).

Zing PFC, owned by Mr Rahman, typically sells fast food. The PFC first came into existence in 2012 but

ownership changed in October 2017 when Mr Rahman took it over and it is now run as a private limited

company with Mr Rahman as the only shareholder.

Mr Rahman is involved in the day-to-day running of the business and works 7 days a week with the help

of 3 employees. He is considering expanding the business by opening up another branch and has two

friends that are interested in supporting him.

Zing PFC exists to provide the public with a unique taste of flavours and to ensure the business becomes

an established one. The average annual sales turnover is £65,000 and Mr Rahman hopes to maximise

profit and provide ‘the best fried chicken in town’.

Mr Rahman has observed occasions where people have brought food for the homeless and the business

has also provided the same. The biggest issue currently facing Zing PFC is healthy eating at a time when

there is a national awareness on obesity.

Mr Rahman considers other PFC’s such as Dixy, KFC and other local takeaways, who also provide fast

food, as his competitors. Mr Rahman realised that local takeaway food was quiet generic and so Zing

PFC aims to stand out by offering:

• Very spicy sauce,

• Competitive pricing,

• Quality burgers

• Quick and efficient service

• Consistent customer service

• Amazing tasting food.

Zing PFC is located near a secondary school and sixth form which helps drum up a lot of business.

Whilst Zing PCF doesn’t have its own website, customers can purchase online from Just-Eat, Uber Eats

and Deliveroo. Zing PFC also has a Twitter and Instagram account but Mr Rahman is not very active in

using these at the moment.

Some of the reasons Mr Rahman wanted to acquire his own business is because he wanted to work for

himself and stated “I want to work around my life and not the other way round”.

Mr Rahman believes his mind set of being focussed, committed, confident, flexible and resilient really

has helped Zing PFC to become a successful business. He also believes understanding the needs of your

customers is the key to success. This involves having knowledge of products you are offering, listening to

customer feedback and working to ensure they are kept happy. This has ultimately led to progressive

increase in sales revenue with a view to opening a second branch in the near future.

Task 7: Case Study-Principles of Management

Motivation: Hyundai Motors

Hyundai Motors and its affiliate Kia Motors combined are the world’s 5th largest automaker. Due to falling

sales and profits at both Korean car makers they are trying to reduce costs. A local paper reports that

Hyundai was looking to cut costs by as much as 30%. It is thought, that in the first instance, this will

probably be from sales and marketing costs. Analysts believe that their poor performance also gives them

leverage when negotiating auto part prices with suppliers and with workers’ wage negotiations.

Cutting costs will not be easy. Hyundai has experienced strikes in 26 of its 30-year history. 2015 looks to

be no different. There are serious concerns that any losses due to work stoppages in 2015 may be hard to

make up as it is relying on the newly launched model to reverse falling sales. In 2014 Hyundai suffered a

production loss of approximately 42,000 cars worth $772 million. 48,000 of Hyundai’s 62,000 workforce

belong to trade unions. In 2015 78% of the 89% that took part in a union ballot voted in favour of strike

action.

Hyundai have said that workers’ demands are excessive and if met would seriously damage the company.

The workers’ demands include:

• 7.8% pay rise

• 2015 bonus equivalent to 30% of the 2014 operating profit

• Guaranteed job security until the age of 65

Questions:

1. Explain the factors that motivate employees at Hyundai. (8 marks)

2. Identify and discuss the benefits for Hyundai if they decide to meet demands of their

employees? (8 marks)

3. Identify and discuss the drawbacks/risks for Hyundai if they decide to meet demands of their

employees? (8 marks)

TIP: You may choose to use additional research to support your discussions in order to demonstrate

higher order researching, application and analysis skills.
