Environment Management

The environment is all the externals factors influencing the life and activities of people.

So Bridgestone, became aware too of the impact of companies on the environment and had a real motivation to set up an environmental management system (EMS).

Page 9: BRIDGESTONE Environnmental Management System (EMS)

To date, the Bridgestone factory of Béthune is the single one of French plant tire certified ISO 14 001

The purpose of it is to reduce in the long-term the impact of the industrial activities on the environment

What is the norm ISO 14001?

This one was committed to prevent pollution, to save energy, reducing its waste and its emissions under conditions economically acceptable like sensitizing its personnel with the environmental problems

1999 : Putting into place of norm ISO 14001

The implementation of the E.M.S at Bridgestone :

Page 10: BRIDGESTONE Environnmental Management System (EMS)

For Bridgestone, the environmental objectives relate to the performances which go beyond the strict observation of the payments and the legal standards :

• the optimization of the performances (It is about decrease of consumption, about production of waste and about refusals, about decrease of the nuisances or still about elimination of pollutions)

• reduction of the risks (It is a question of decreasing or of eliminating the environmental risks, connected to leaks of dangerous liquid products, to pollutions of the ground, to generation and to transport of special industrial waste)

Page 11: BRIDGESTONE Environnmental Management System (EMS)

WHY did Bridgestone engage a process of environmental management?

To manage its lawful constraints.

To optimize its costs.

To make a relation between confidence and the whole of its partners (shareholders, banks, insurances, residents, associations...).

To control its risks.

Public image.

To perennialize and improve competitiveness of its company, advantage competing.

Page 12: BRIDGESTONE Environnmental Management System (EMS)

HOW did Bridgestone engage a process of environmental management?

Definition of the objectives to be reached: awareness of the environmental situation of Bridgestone.

- The essential implication of the head of company.

- The mobilization of the whole of its personnel.

Establishment of its realistic calendar (inventory of fixtures, installation of the EMS).

Installation of the human and financial means adapted. The factors of success were as follows:

- An accompaniment by service provider.

Identification of the partners and the providers who had could advise, as well as the financial assistances and the tools available.

Methods used for industrials wastes

Bridgestone studied its waste:

- Description of the situation existing in the company (production, management, elimination of the waste).

- Technico-economic study of the alternative solutions to decrease streams and harmfulness of the waste.

- Presentation and justification of the fields the choice of which is chosen.

There are various types of waste, classified by their danger.

There is a stocking of goods (in garbage can) for every type of waste.

Methods used for the treatment of waters

Waste water during the manufacturing is stored in a special pond situated outside.

To control the quality of the water, there is a laboratory of control inside the factory.

Every day, the PH of waste water is raised and analyzed. If this one is corresponding to the standards, waters can be then rejected in canals (average PH tolerated: 8,48).

The treatment of waters is made by chemical oxidation.

To be able to reject its industrial waste water in the urban systems of purification, Bridgestone received an authorization of draining by the administrator of the network of purification of Bethune. The discharge of waste water does not owe:

- Make confusions of the health for the staff who works on the system of purification.- Damage the system of purification.- Hinder the functioning of the station and compromise the field of elimination of mud.- Alter the receiving environment of purified waters.

Page 15: BRIDGESTONE Environnmental Management System (EMS)

Which are the results related to the EMS at Bridgestone?

A big reduction in consumption of energy:

Electricity : -3,2%

Vapor cogeneration : -8%

Acid/Soda : -100% (because not more used)

Water : -3,5%

Domestic water : +1,1%

Conclusion:

The environment is a transverse preoccupation for Bridgestone.

The learning of the environmental specialists was made with a long term including the notion of :

-environmental protection,

-sustainable development,

-and ecology.

For this big group, it is the communication, the forming, the information, the sensitization and above all the negotiation that developed such a brand image.

Real advantages since the application of the Standard ISO 14001- Reduction of the environmental costs. - Creation of hiring, internal reconversions within the site. - Brand image

This EMS was a profitable investment.
