It has been a busy and interesting month in the community with a lot going on and some really great weather. I met with Stuart Peters of the City of Calgary Storm Water Division to discuss the potential for a Rain Water Garden Project in Bridgeland. Th e City will be assessing sites in Bridgeland in the fall. In reality, there is only so much green space in Bridgeland and it will probably come down to 1, or perhaps 2, sites that are suitable. CDC Recreation will ensure the City receives updates as the engineering for the rink and water park drainage system is reviewed in the fall in order to capitalize on any potential synergies.

Many of you may have noticed there were some new sidewalks in Bridgeland and this created quite a bit of discussion as residents were concerned about the upgrades being added to their yearly tax bills. As promised in his “Ward 9 Update: Taxes #1”, Alderman Carra entered a Notice of Motion on July 25, 2011 in light of inner-city residents being charged for sidewalk replacements as part of the local improvement program. Currently, when a sidewalk is reaching the end of its lifecycle and is identifi ed by the City as needing replacement, residents in the area are notifi ed about a local improvement. Th e cost of

BRCA COMMUNITY NEWSEvents Report

There are a few programs to keep watching out for in the near future. As part of the Be Fit for Life program out of the University of Calgary, our community is participating in a walking challenge starting in October with mapped routes and incentives. There will be more details about this program soon!

On October 14th, we are planning an Oktoberfest-themed pub night, so don your finest dirndl and lederhosen! Also, over the sum-mer months, a local resident worked with other local residents to create a 10 minute video about our community. I hear we’ll be pre-miering a video at the Pub Night.

We are also planning to host a family Halloween event for the afternoon of October 30th, so watch for details about that.

Just a reminder, the Bridgeland Playgroup is still running. It’s every Wednesday from 10am to noon. We’ve taken over the nursery at the Gateway International Church. The playgroup is free, and so is the coffee.

So there are a few dates to mark on your calendar!OctoberOctober 14th: Oktoberfest Pub NightOctober 30th: Family Halloween DayOngoing Bridgeland Playgroup • The Walking Challenge

If you would like to get involved in any of these events (volun-teering, attending or both), and would like more information, please contact me. Look forward to seeing you in the near future!

Discover Callanetics Canadian Callanetics takes the grace and fluidity of Ballet and the

mind/body synergy of Yoga and has combined them into a revolu-tionary exercise program that tones and reshapes the body. Callan-etics exercises improve poise, balance and body awareness. It con-sists of small, delicate, fluid movements which do not jar, stress or strain joints. When preformed correctly, seemingly easy and simple techniques have amazing results. Movements that were difficult or uncomfortable become fluid and graceful, and actually feel good -- making you want to move all the more. For a larger percentage of women/men who weight train but don’t dance, Callanetics moves can fit right in. They make an ideal Cross-training choice that pro-vides toning benefits. Callanetics is good training for making your body more intelligent overall. Canadian Callanetics program is avail-able at the community hall.

President’s Message, continued from page 3the local improvement is covered 50% by the City and 50% by the residents to be paid over a 15 year period. Residents can petition against the local improvement, however, in most cases, they are initiated without much opposition. Alderman Carra and Team Ward 9 feel that it is unfair to charge residents who have been contributing property taxes to the City’s coff ers for - in some cases - 100 years, and that they should not bear the cost of routine maintenance to the sidewalks. Rather, Administration should be reserving monies from property taxes paid to cover such routine maintenance.

Dustin Jones approached me with a request for support from the BRCA Board for a Bridgeland-Riverside Cycling Strategy Proposal and I was happy to do this. Th e City of Calgary has developed a plan and infrastructure budget to develop a cycling network in Calgary, and Bridgeland is one of the most pedestrian friendly communities in Calgary. With this in mind, Mr. Carra’s support for a cycling strategy, and consideration of traffi c calming concerns that has been expressed by the community on various occasions, Dustin believes there is a compelling opportunity to develop a cycling strategy specifi c to the community in Bridgeland. Dustin recently met with the City to provide a proposal to develop several key routes. Dustin’s goal is to create on-street cycling routes that are safe for all ages, as well as addressing missing links in the regional cycling network. Let’s wish him luck on this worthy endeavor!

We would like your help in getting some of our cross walks updated. If you notice that a cross walk needs to be re-painted, please call 311 and submit a request. Please take some time to make that call and ensure the ongoing safety of our community residents (especially the little guys walking to school every day!).

On a fi nal note, please stop and take a moment to thank our Adopt a Park volunteers who have been out there working tirelessly to ensure the general upkeep of the Hall and Soccer Fields in the last few months. At one point, 14 bags of garbage were collected! Th e City of Calgary Parks has recently downgraded this park to a class “C”, which means there is no money in their budget for general upkeep, weeding, snow removal and that sort of thing. Please take a moment to write to your Alderman Gian-Carlo Carra and ask to have our park upgraded to a class “A”. Th is is too important an issue. Please make your voice heard. Th anks everyone and have a great day.

Newsletter Editorand Webmaster Needed!

The Bridgeland Riverside Community Association is looking for volunteers willing to edit the monthly Bridges newsletter. The time commitment is relatively light (probably 5 hours per month). All you need is a word process and the internet. All the graphic design, ad selling and more complicated stuff is already handled. If you’re inter-ested, please let us know.

Also, the BRCA will soon have a new website. We are in the pro-cess of recruiting someone to update it regularly. The new website will have easy to use content-management software, so super internet skills aren’t necessary. Again, if you’re interested, please let us know.

Community SurveyWhat do you think about your neighbourhood? We want to know. If you would like to fill in an online survey please follow the link

at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RS_BridgelandIn 2009, the City of Calgary, Community & Neighbourhood

Services, launched the “Strong Neighbourhood Initiative” in Bridge-land-Riverside. The purpose of this initiative is to strengthen neigh-bourhoods by working in partnership with residents, community associations and other community groups. Since its inception, the goal of the initiative has been to encourage people to become more involved in their neighbourhoods to address common concerns and enhance all aspects of community life. Crucial to this initiative is hearing from residents to better understand their thoughts and feel-ings about their neighbourhoods.

Over the next few months, City of Calgary staff from Community & Neighbourhood Services, along with community volunteers will be asking residents to fill out a survey about their neighbourhood. You may see us at your door, at special events or asking you to fill in an online survey. This information will be anonymous but your opinions are critical to helping us get a picture of your neighbour-hood and to understand what is important to you. Your opinion matters, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey.

If you have questions about the Strong Neighbourhood Initiative, this survey or would like to fill one out please contact Christine Ben-nett (Community Social Worker) 403 221-3841.

The Women’s Centre is reaching out to Bridgeland

The Women’s Centre is an information and resource centre for women in Bridgeland. We offer drop-in support services and work-shops and all programs and services are free. In order to strengthen our connections with the Bridgeland community we would like to

hear from women in the neighbourhood about the following things:• Are you familiar with the Women’s Centre?• Are there any activities or events you would like to participate in

at the Centre?• How would you like to be involved? Please share your input with us. Give us a phone call for an infor-

mal discussion or ask us to send you our questionnaire. We would be happy to invite interested women and women’s groups to the centre to get to know us better or to have a tour.

We are looking forward to hearing from you. Please feel free to contact the Women’s Centre with questions, input or to get more information. You can reach us at 403-264-1155 or [email protected]. Ask for Mickey, Carrie or Caterina.

Picnic at the ParkIt was so wonderful to experience something that felt like summer

this year. And what made it even better was the birth of the “Picnic at the Park” tradition. On a Tuesday evening in July, four families decided to meet for a picnic at the 9A Street park. We each brought whatever we had in the fridge, spread it out on the picnic table in potluck fashion and enjoyed the sunshine while our kids played and periodically stopped for a bite to eat. It was glorious! We decided that evening that we should try to make it a Tuesday night tradition in Bridgeland. So we each sent out emails to friends in the neighbour-hood and within a few weeks we were up to 12 or so families with all our kids. It’s been such a great way to connect with other families in the ‘hood. And although as I write this the sky is grey and the weather is cool, I’m optimistic that there will be at least a few more nice Tuesday evenings. So grab whatever leftovers you might have around and join us at the 9A Street park at about 5pm for a picnic at the park.

October 2011 9Bridgeland-Riverside Bridges

by Councilor Gian-Carlo Carra

When I wrote the September update it was during the dog days of August. Back then I had mistakenly assumed that my October update would be written amidst the full-bore craziness of the fall’s budget debates. But because of the lag-time between writing and publishing, I fi nd I’m writing the October update right after Labour Day; still during the calm before the storm. Th is actually works out well because for September I faced the diffi cult choice between writing a Bridgeland/Riverside-specifi c report or weighing in on the single biggest issue confronting Calgary. With the provincial election looming, I chose the latter and discussed Calgary’s desperate need for a real urban agenda.

Th ere is a provincial election on the horizon - it is only now a mat-ter of time, and I really hope that you will select your MLA candidate based on their commitment to forging a new relationship between our City and the Province - a relationship that gives Calgary the ca-pacity to solve the myriad problems that confront us. My website is fi nally fully live so if you didn’t read my last report check it out at www.gccarra.ca. Our Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, is also passionate about this issue and has recently launched a website based around the idea that cities matter - it’s called www.citiesmatter.com/. Finally, as City Council’s representative on the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (along with Ward 3’s Jim Stevenson), I can attest that this is an issue facing all of Alberta’s cities, towns, and villages. Check out the AUMA’s assertion that “local matters” at: www.auma.ca/live/AUMA/Local_Matters. Finally, led by George Brookman, an impres-sive collection of Calgary’s business leaders have also rallied around this idea under the name “Transformation Calgary” – stay tuned for their advocacy in the months ahead.

As for Bridgeland Riverside, one issue that Team Ward 9 is con-tinuing to work on is revising parking rules in the community in or-der to provide for more free short-term parking, as well as employee parking options for many of the local businesses. We fi rmly believe that the current paid parking rules have negatively aff ected many of the local Bridgeland businesses, especially those that target ‘drop in’ shoppers, who only need 10-15 minutes to make their purchases, and have to compete with other businesses in the city that have free parking available. Details are not fi nalized yet, however you can watch for some free parking zones (with time limits) coming to the neighbourhood soon. We will also be working with your community association to revisit a business employment parking strategy on 2nd Avenue that we’ve recently discovered was almost implemented but then fell by the wayside when the CA’s executive and your Aldermen changed over.

Team Ward 9, being Jacqueline, Lindsay, and I, are standing by at your service. Please visit www.gccarra.ca and let us know what you love best about Bridgeland, and submit your favourite commu-nity pictures for us to feature on our website. Here’s to an exciting fall season that begins to see the transformation we’re committed to achieving in Calgary.

The Bridgeland Riverside Community Association (BRCA) can provide many benefits to the members of its community and sur-rounding area such as: volunteer opportunities, safety forums, com-munity events and programs, as well as a voice in the decisions im-pacting the place you live. These benefits are some of many that the BRCA does for the community annually, but what is more important is what members gain on a personal level. Every individual acquires something different from their community association, so the ques-tion is what does your community association mean to you? And how do you support your community association?

A message from yourcommunity Membership Director:

My name is Hilary Lewis, your Membership Director for 2011/2012. I am a recent resident of Bridgeland, but took to this community instantly and wanted to get involved. It is my hope to make the BRCA membership as exciting to current and new residents as it was to me. Purchasing a membership with the BRCA allows you to learn more about community issues, events, and development. It also provides a point of contact for any concerns and most impor-tantly a voice in your community!

If you would like to become a member of the community as-

Are Your Child’s Eyes Ready for School?by Dr. Debbie Luk, BSc(Hons), OD, Micah Luong, OD, and Alison Leung, BSc

Vision is an integral part of a child’s learning and development. Vision is the fourth most common cause of disability in North America. Th is is an important statistic as 80% of what children learn comes from their visual processing of the world. Vision problems can some-times be the root of learning diffi culties. Fortunately, they are treatable, especially with early detection.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:When should my child have an eye exam? Th e fi rst eye exam should be at six months old and yearly thereafter. Alberta Health Care

covers children’s annual eye exam until 19 years of age. Alberta’s Eye See Eye Learn program also covers a pair of spectacles for a child attending kindergarten.

How do I know if my child is having vision problems?

How is vision related to learning? Vision is more than just seeing 20/20. Good

vision means being able to read effi ciently, clearly and comfortably for an extended period of time. Good vision is the ability to interpret visual in-formation so we can discriminate similar looking shapes and letters such as b, d, p and q. Further-more, good vision allows us to visualize informa-tion in our minds, enabling us to succeed in read-ing comprehension, math and abstract concepts. Many children who have diffi culties in school often have a vision problem. It is important to emphasize that vision is a learned skill, similar to walking and talking. If your child is falling be-hind in school, vision therapy can help acquire these fundamental visual skills.

How can we treat vision problems? Glasses, visual hygiene and/or vision therapy may be prescribed. Vision therapy is an indi-

vidualized program of neuroptometric exercises performed both in-offi ce and at home which will help remediate the aforementioned vision problems.

As parents, you play a vital role in your child’s development. An annual eye examination can detect risk factors for vision problems. If additional testing and treatments are indicated, then a developmental optometrist will be able to help your child improve visual skills and excel to his/her full potential.

Visit www.covd.org or www.oepf.org for more information and fi nd out whether your child needs vision therapy.

To everything, there is a season...Fall has arrived and now is the time to get your yard ready for the

winter so that the spring clean-up is less tedious and the lawn, plants, trees and shrubs are healthier.

Grass: Grass must be less than six inches (15 cm) tall according to the Community Standards Bylaw, but three inches is optimal. Late fall is the best time to apply fresh seed to renew a lawn; the seed lies dormant under the snow and germinates the following spring with the moisture of the melt.

Leaves: Raking the lawn ensures your grass won’t suff ocate under a burden of fallen leaves. Remember that under the Community Stan-dards Bylaw, it is illegal to burn leaves and yard waste in Calgary.

Weeds: According to the latest version of the Alberta Weed Con-trol Regulation, weeds are now divided into two groups: noxious and prohibited noxious. Th e growth of noxious weeds must be controlled and prohibited noxious weeds must be destroyed. Dandelions are not considered weeds but grass, and should be dealt with accordingly. Th e Oxeye Daisy (see photographs) is an example of a noxious weed commonly found in Calgary yards this year. Fall is the best time to get rid of weeds so they don’t surprise you in the spring.

Plants: Leave perennials standing until next spring, but remove fallen fruit and leaves as these may house disease-causing organisms that can rise again next spring for a renewed assault. Th e City of Calgary Healthy Yards program provides guidelines for beautiful and healthy yards by using an environmentally friendly approach to yard, lawn and garden care.

Trees and shrubs: Keep trees and shrubs on your property trimmed so they don’t interfere with pedestrians or vehicles. Consult the Street Bylaw for further information.

Reduce watering of trees and shrubs in the fall, but give all ever-greens one heavy watering as close to freeze-up as possible. Th is will prevent dehydration over the winter.

For more information about yard maintenance, visit the new and more user-friendly City of Calgary website at calgary.ca and search “Bylaws”. Enjoy the fall and its colours!

22 October 2011Bridgeland-Riverside Bridges

The other day, some young children asked my wife Terry and me what we had done for entertainment, ‘back in the day’. These kids knew that we didn’t have computers or

television back then. Our reply was simple and to-the-point: we told them that we thought of ourselves (and our peers) as “The Children of Yesterday”, because in those days,

we didn’t (couldn’t!) text, IM or email each other. Instead, we made the time to actually talk to each other, face-to-face, as there was no Facebook then. I guess you could say that

Bridgeland ...back in the day by Larry Simon

we participated in the ‘original’ Facebook activity though: we booked time to have some face-time with our friends!

Because we didn’t have computers, so we used our own minds, and pen and paper, to figure things out. Because we didn’t have television (at least when I was really young) to keep us entertained, we created our own entertainment. We played all types of sports, and through our imagination, our dreams became our reality.

When we were young, a special day would be one where we visited the library. We loved to marvel at all the books on the shelves. Nowadays, the latest e-gadget is “Kindle”, and the TV ads proclaim how many e-books you can get on it, so you don’t have to lug them back and forth to the library…sigh…how times have changed!

In those days, the stores had treasures to awe even the most worldly people. Children were not just tolerated, but were treasured too. Going to the movies was an event, and there were shows for everyone in the family, so that even grandparents could go, and not be embarrassed (those of you reading this who are from our era will likely chuckle at this!).

It seemed then that time did not speed by as fast as today, but slowly drifted delightfully into tomorrow…

In future columns, we will be mentioning some of the other outstanding people whose dreams of success became their reality.

- This regular column running in your Bridges community newsletter is edited by Lori Losowy. Larry spent his formative years in Bridgeland-Riverside and went on to become a multi-talented artist. He loves to share his stories and memories of the way things were, “back in the day.”

We look forward to meeting you!Tom Pecek And Associates
