Wilsons Backin the UK!May was a month omixed emotions as wesaid goodbye to theWilson amily in Mwanza.Ian and Andie have worked tirelesslyto establish B2A in Tanzania overthe past nine years, committedwholeheartedly to making adierence in the lives o so manypeople here.

To have a vision, and then create an organisation which has grown to this size is both a brave anda courageous achievement. In the early days their dream was to move to Tanzania and serve thecommunity. Through living in the country, really engaging with people and trying to understand whatneeded to be done, they wanted to build something that would go beyond what they could do alone. That dream has become a reality and indeed it has gone beyond what they originally hoped waspossible.

As the Wilsons move back to the UK, we know that they will keep pursuing the dream that we sharetogether. It’s not in their nature to settle! We will o course miss them in Mwanza but make no mistakethere is more to come as we all work together to continue the work at Bukumbi, develop HDC andbring pain relie to as many people as possible.

Thank you Ian and Andie or blazing the trail – here’s to the next part o the journey! …and welcomeback to the UK!

Congratulations and we’ll miss you!Congratulations to Fay and David on the birth o their daughter Elsie

Maria. Fay will be returning to Mwanza at the end o June and will be

leaving the B2A team and heading back to work at the International

School here in Mwanza. We want to say a big thank you to Fay or

all her hard work and commitment to the community at Bukumbi

and especially or the work she has done developing the Education

Programmes. Thank you – you’ll be missed!

They will also be involved insupporting DVP, with Paul working as Clinical Advisor.

The Brinds come to Mwanza with Isaac (2) and Hannah(born in mid-May) so will have their hands ull settling into lie in Tanzania.

We look orward to having them as part o the teamand the contribution they will bring to growing the workin East Arica.

The Partnership has many benets or the practice or business, not least o which is showing their patients and team that they canmake a real, lasting dierence to a community in the developing worldthrough their support.

About being a Unity Partner, Robert Dyas o RD Online DentalEducation had this to say, “We joined as ounding members in theUnity Partnership back in November 2010 to make a dierence - to

give something back. I attended a DVP in February 2011 and was luckyenough to see the work that is done and where the money goes. Itwas some o the hardest work I have ever done, but also the mostrewarding. Would I do it again? absolutely! Become a Unity Partner.Make a dierence!”

We are looking or Partners to join us to help train ClinicalOfcers in Oral Urgent Treatment this November.

January DVP UpdateWith all o the unexpected rain in January, we had six Clinical Ocerswho had learned all the necessary skills or Oral Urgent Treatment, butwho had not had enough supervised practice to be prepared to workon their own.

We set up another training session and spent two days with theseClinical Ocers in Kwimba District to make sure all were 100% ready! The District Dental Ocer rom Kwimba and long time B2A riend, JohnNyorobi, the District Dental Ocer o Misungwi came to supervise the

training and provide any needed teaching. Hope Dental Centre kindlyleant head nurse Sophia to help out.

We are proud to say that all six Clinical Ocers passed the trainingand are now working independently in their rural areas.

“It was some

o the hardest

work I have

ever done, but

also the most

rewarding.

Would I doit again?

Absolutely!

BDA – back toManchesterWe had a great session again at

the British Dental Association (BDA)

conerence in Manchester talking

about DVP, and how short term dental

volunteering can make a long term

dierence.

Close to 200 people turned up or our

seminar on the 20th May, which was

delivered by Ian Wilson and Mark Topley. We were delighted to see so many

young dentists, all keen to start their

careers by giving something back.

Ian and Mark started out by talking

about what the session was all about –

the shocking statistic that over 70% o

the world’s population have no access

to a dentist, which means that millions

live in pain with no hope o treatment.

It’s a stat which ultimately motivated

us to start the training programme

in emergency dentistry that we run

in East Arica, ably and wonderully

resourced by our antastic team o

dental volunteers, many o whom give

up 2 weeks every year to travel and train

local health workers.

They also discussed the history o

Bridge2Aid, beore going over typical

oral health issues are that people ace in

the developing world and how traditional

volunteering ails to make a lasting

dierence. The guys then talked about DVP

(Dental Volunteer Programme), the

evidence base or its success and

some o the nuts and bolts o how it

works. We’re proud that the programme

has increased access to emergency

treatment to almost 1.7 million people

in the past 6 years. They shared our

vision or the uture, why we believe that

DVP can make a signicant contribution

to eradicating dental pain, and how

dental proessionals can get involved inmaking a tangible, lasting dierence. It

was a great session (despite the rogue

powerpoint ailure!). Thanks to Chris

Barrow or chairing, and to everyone

who came along.

Income generationIncome generation at Bukumbi is going rom strength tostrength. With regular help rom Andie Wilson, local tailor

Mussa, and riend Leonie van Klinken, the quality o the itemsbeing produced by the sewing, weaving and bead groups is amazing. This was proven to us recently by the success o a local crat sale. Peoplewere astonished when they ound out that items such as the beadedbracelets had been made by a lady at Bukumbi who has no ngers! We areworking on sourcing local outlets or the crats and have already had ordersrom two large hotels in town – great news!

Education SponsorshipWilliam, Lameki, Abel and Ashak or the ‘Kahunda Boys’ as they have becomeaectionately known, were back at Bukumbi or the Easter holidays. It wasgreat timing as they were able to lend their artistic skills and give a helpinghand to the team renovating their old classrooms at Kigongo Primary School.

The condence and maturity o the our boys is admirable and grows withevery visit. The three Form 3 (year 9) boys exam results were testament to theact that the boys really are making the most o their opportunity. In their Form2 (year 8) national examinations, William achieved a very respectable 30thplace in his year o 89 students and Lameki an outstanding 9th! Abel despitesome tough personal circumstances aced throughout his Form 2, achieved aremarkable 9th place out o 147 students - an amazing achievement!

Ashak, younger than the other three boys and who has recently made thetransition rom Kigongo primary to Kahunda secondary, has adapted very welland is enjoying his studies and hopes to ollow the others in their success.

These boys would not be in secondary education i it were not orsponsorship. A huge thank you to all their sponsors.

UK VolunteersAs well as the many volunteers who come to Tanzania each year to workwith Bridge2Aid, we are served by a great team o people who give theirtime regularly in the UK.

A quick look at our ‘Meet the Team’ section o the new website will giveyou an idea o who these wonderul people are. They help us stay ecient, eective and help keep administrative costs down. They also bring a greatdeal o skill and enthusiasm!

Annie Bradley, our Event Co-ordinator is a regular at trade shows andexhibitions, giving her time reely to talk to supporters and volunteers. Sheis oten accompanied by Shaenna Loughnane who also works part time as

So many enquiries aboutundraising and how to get involved come in each week that Brian wouldstruggle to keep on top o things without a volunteer - Jackie helpsenormously in keeping us responding eectively to enquiries.

Graham Stokes volunteers his time to speak on our behal, as well astalking about his experiences as a DVP Site Clinical Lead during the manytalks he does each year to young dentists.

Karen Paterson helps us distribute and keep track o the small army ocollection boxes dotted around the country on reception counters romLands End to John O’Groats!

We simply would be able to have the impact that we do without the hardwork that they put in, and the enthusiasm with which they approach thetask. Thank you all!
