Demolition of Hancock Bridgein Mumbai

Introduction

Hancock Bridge was a bridge in Mumbai between the Suburban railway stations of

Sandhurst Road and Byculla. Hancock Bridge was first built between 1877-187 under British !ndia era !t was named after "olonel H # Hancock$ who ser%ed as the member and

&resident of the Brihanmumbai Munici'al "or'oration (then Bombay Munici'al

"or'oration) BM"* during that 'eriod. +he bridge was then rebuilt in 1,.

&ost its demolition in ,1/$ Hancock Bridge will again be rebuilt by the BM" with

'reser%ing some of its old structure.



Demolition

0emolition 'lan was on 'a'ers since ,1 as the bridge had become weak and thus

only allowing limited traffic. !t was also to make way for the "entral 2ine of MumbaiSuburban railway to make way for 0"-to-3" con%ersion as the con%ersion$ from 1$4-%olt

0" to ,4$-%olt 3"$ re5uires a minimum distance of ,1 centimeters between the train6s

roof and the base of the bridges. Brihanmumbai Munici'al "or'oration (BM"* and "entral

Railway at the same time was also keen on 'reser%ing old structures and thus was 'lanning

accordingly. !n ,1$ it was confirmed that BM" would 'ay for the demolition and

reconstruction. 0emolition of Hancock Bridge began in o%ember ,14 and was since

closed for 'edestrian traffic.

+he demolition work will badly affect motorists as this would cause se%eral di%ersions that

are likely to clog u' bridges like & 0mello Road$ S 9 & Road and the :astern #reeway.

Traffic Diversions

+he di%ersions ha%e already been 'lanned by the traffic 'olice. 3ccording to a

circular 'ublished by 0"& (+raffic* 3nil ;umbhare$ motorists coming from Ma<gaon

towards oorbaug =unction would be di%erted to = = Road %ia esbit Road and further

towards oorbaug =unction %ia = = =unction.

9ehicles would be allowed to mo%e through ;akli> "howk %ia =inabhai Mul>i Rathod Marg to

& 0mello Road to ?adibunder =unction- S 9 & Road and 'roceed towards oorbaug

=unction. 3ll the traffic coming from oorbaug =unction towards Ma<gaon would be di%erted

to 0r Maheshwari Road.

year-old "arnac Bridge in =anuary ,1/$ on the same line$ closer to Mumbai "S+. ?hile the

"arnac Bridge connects "rawford Market with the dockland area$ Hancock Bridge connects

old Ma<gaon and 0ongri areas. +he "arnac Bridge named after former Bombay o%ernor

=ames Ri%ett "arnac and a >etty named after him further east$ has multi-lingual stone 'la5ues

that too will be sa%ed during the u'grade.
