Types of Bricks Uses of Bricks in Civil Engineering

A) Common bricks

-have a dull texture and

poor colour

- Used for internal and rear walls that need to be plastered

B) Facing bricks

-Pleasant looking texture

-Capable of withstanding

the effects of weather

-Used for constructions that do not need to be plastered because of pleasant appearance

C) Engineering bricks

-Very hard, dense and do not easily absorb water

-Mainly used for walls carrying exceptionally heavy loads. Examples : retaining walls , foundation

D) Fire bricks

-Able to resist high

temperature

-Mainly used for constructions that need to resist high temperatures like kiln or boiler

2. Sand-lime bricks/ silica brick (Calcium silicate)

-Materials

hydrated lime

Clean sand

ratio of 1:8

-As an alternative for replacing ‘Common Clay Bricks’

-for internal and rear walls

Advantages and Advantages and disadvantages disadvantages

of Bricksof Bricks

Advantages Disadvantages

1. Easy to be used in building walls

2. Easily managed/ handled

3. Facing bricks can be made as decoration without plastering

4. Can be used as pier

5. Acid or alkaline resistance

1. Plastering work requires skilled workers

2. Low tensile-strength
