    QUOIN CORNER

Quoins are special ornamental projections executed in

brickwork to mark corners of buildings and to create anoverall appearance of strength, grandeur and solidity.

When constructing quoins, brick is laid in the standard

method with a two-inch air space allowed between the

brick and the sheathing rather than the normal one inch

of space. It is important that an adequate number of

    ties be used.

This relatively simple masonry technique is a sign of

elegance that will be a lasting reminder of the quality of

    the builders work.

Smaller structures require a style all

their own. Its not enough to mimic

what you find in larger homes.

    HIS OWN HOME

    Charlotte architect RalfeMesrobian, who has

designed dozens ofhomes, used brickcreatively on his home. His philosophy showsthrough in the homehe designed for him-self. For the facade, heused a Flemish bondof dark purple headersand pinkish stretchers. The other three sidesfeature a running bond.Carved keystones on

window arches showleaves from oak, poplar, fig and pinetrees all presenton the property. Thefine brick-work in thearches was inspired bya home in Old Salem, the Moravian village in

    Winston-Salem. (5a)

    Flemish bond extends

    beyond the house to planters

    flanking the entry and brick

    serves to frame the extensive
