The work focuses on restoring the areas that were originally disrupted during the gold mining days, and will result in a net positive improvement of the Chestatee River, Lake Lanier, and to the waters reaching Atlanta and beyond. HISTORY / MINERAL RESOURCES: Briar Patch is home to the first commercial gold mining operation in the United States, the Calhoun Mine. Gold from the North Georgia region is considered to be among the most pure in the world, and Lumpkin County was the site of the first major gold rush in the United States.
