Babeu coattails shrink as Henry and Voyles lose to Lamb and Volkmer in August 30 primary

By James J. HodlCopper Area News

Pinal County voters spoke on Aug. 30 in the Arizona Primary Election, and their words were anything but pleasant for County Attorney Lando Voyles, District 2 Supervisor Cheryl Chase, Su-perior Mayor Jayme Valenzuela and Kearny Mayor Sam Hosler. All four saw their terms of office cut short at the ballot box. And while the Town Councils of Kearny, Mammoth and Superi-or will see plenty of new faces as a result of the Aug. 30 election, on the county level voters mostly re-nominated incumbents to represent their parties on the Nov. 8 ballot. One trend from the primary election is that the political muscle of two-term Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu may be on the wane. While he won the Republican nomination over five other candidates in the First Congressional District with 32.5% of the vote, the candidates Babeu endorsed did not fare as well. Mark Lamb, a former Pinal County Deputy (2012-14) and Detective with the Salt River Police Department, easily defeated Babeu’s Chief Deputy Steve Henry for the Republican nomina-

tion for Pinal County Sheriff. And Kent Volkmer, president of the Pinal County Bar Association, beat Babeu loyalist and incum-bent Lando Voyles by more than 5,000 votes for the Republican nomination for Pinal County Attorney. Henry and Voyles ran an extensive campaign as the “Law and Order Team,” blanketing county roads with groups of signs tout-ing the criminal threats to the county before reaching their joint poster in a manner reminiscent of the Burma Shave advertising campaign of yore. But voters opted for the quitter separate cam-paigns of Lamb and Volkmer. Lamb did especially well among

voters in San Tan Valley where his campaign signs were not seen before homes on subdivision streets. Lamb will face Kaye Dickson, who convincingly won the Democrat nomination for Sheriff over Kevin Taylor. Dickson campaigned hard on programs to prevent crime and promises to be a working rather than a showboat sheriff. Babeu will face Democrat Tom O’Halleran to succeed U.S. Senate candidate Ann Kirkpatrick as Congressman in Arizona’s First District, which stretches from southern Pinal County to

the far northeast corner of the state. Although O’Halleran won the Democrat nomination by more than 7,000 votes throughout the district, his opponent Miguel Olivas topped him by 400 votes in Pinal County. Among incumbent members of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors, only Cheryl Chase was not renominated by voters. Mike Good-man, a San Tan Valley resident and owner of several local businesses, finished first in a field of five candidates in the Republican Primary with 1,726 votes (33.8% of the total votes cast). Chase placed second with 1,390 (27.1%), fol-lowed by Tisha Castillo, Wayne Bachmann and Manuel R. Vega. Goodman’s win was credited to his hard per-sonal campaigning especially in San Tan Valley, where he promised to help bring more jobs and services. Also a supporter of San Tan Valley incorporation, Goodman will face no opposition in November as there is no official Democrat candidate slated.

In other Pinal County Board of Supervisor races, renominated incumbents nominated are Democrat Peter Rios (District 1), Stephen Miller (District 3), Anthony Smith (District 4) and Todd House (District 5). Only Rios will face competition in November from Republi-can Thomas Sorensen, who ran unopposed for his party’s nomination. The other three face no competition in November as the Democrat Party fielded no candidates in the primary. The local race that had everyone watching was the Recall Election for Mayor of Superior. Incumbent Mayor Jayme Valenzuela was easily ejected from office by Town Council member Mila Besich-Lira, who received 516 votes to Valenzuela’s 151 votes. The recall election was called in April as nearly double the necessary citizen signatures were secured in response to the discovery last December that Valenzu-ela had used the town debit eight times for personal matters, including a visit to the Wild Horse Pass Casino.

Besich-Lira will assume the position of Mayor of Superior at the Sept. 8 Town Council Meet-ing. Membership on Superior’s Town Council also will change. Voters reelected Vice Mayor Olga D. Lopez, along with new members Vanessa Navarrette and Bruce Armitage. Incumbent John A. Tameron and Carl W. (Bill) Vogler did not receive sufficient votes. There also will be turnover on the Town Coun-cils of Kearny and Mammoth. Debra Sommers nosed out incumbent Sam Hosler at Kearny Mayor by only 29 votes. How-ever, the race was close and Sommers getting just under 50% of the vote, a runoff election could be staged in November. Whether a runoff is needed will be determined when the official election results are issued on Sept. 7, said Ke-arny Town Clerk Cathy Woolery. On the Town Council, only Sheila Stephenson was reelected to a new terms. Securing the most votes for Council seats were Rose Bradford and Samantha Mista. Failing to win reelection was David Herrera. In Mammoth, only Mayor Frances Wickham was reelected to the Town Council on Aug. 30. New Council members, all of whom received more votes than Wickham, were Alvaro Anaya, Joe Dietz and Frances Amparno. Council

incumbents not reelected were Vice Mayor Joe Brewer and Bob Sloan, as was Bart Goff. In Mammoth, voters elect the Council but Council members vote among themselves as to who serves as Mayor and Vice Mayor. Other Pinal County races decided on August 30 include only one contested race where for County Accessor incumbent Republican Doug-las Wolf will face Democrat Jacqueline Minto. For the other positions Republicans will run unopposed, which are Recorder Virginia Ross, Superintendent of Schools Jill Broussard and Treasurer Michael McCord. November matchups for State Senate seat mostly in Pinal County will be in District 8 incumbent Democrat Barbara McGuire against Republican Frank Pratt, District 11 incumbent Republican Steve Smith against Democrat Ralph Atchue, and District 16 incumbent Re-publican David Farnsworth against Democrat Scott Prior. For State House of Representatives seats, the matchups are in District 8 Thomas (T.J.) Shope (incumbent) and David Cook against Democrat Carmen Casillas, District 11 incumbent Republicans Mark Finchan and Vince Leach against Democrat Corin Hammond, and District 16 incumbents Kelly Townsend and Doug Coleman against Demo-crats Sharon Stinard and Cara Prior.

CASA GRANDE (August, 2016) – The first Sunday after Labor Day is recognized as Grandparents’ Day in the United States. This year, the day falls on Sept. 11. As the nation celebrates Grandparents’ Day, First Things First applauds those grandparents who are parenting a second time around. Earlier this year, the Arizona Legislature proclaimed September as Grandfamily/Kinship Care Month, a time to recognize grandparents and other family members raising children who cannot be cared for by their own parents. State Senator Debbie Lesko sponsored the bill. In Arizona, 14 percent of Arizona children ages 0 to 5 live with grandparents, compared to 12 percent nationally. Of those 14 percent, 30 percent of these households have no parent of the child present, meaning grandparents are responsible for most of the basic needs of children living with them. For many grandparents, it can be challenging when it has been decades since they cared for young children. So much has been learned about brain development and the impact of early experiences. Now we know that about 90 percent of a child’s brain develops before age 5. More and more evidence shows quality early interactions are crucial for a young child’s success in school and later in life. FTF provides funding for various programs that are having positive impacts on grandparents and Arizona’s children. In Pinal County, FTF Pinal Region funds the

United Way of Pinal County Friend, Family & Neighbor (FFN) Caregivers Outreach Assistance Project, which offers support to grandparents raising and/or caring for their grandchildren. Grandparents can attend free monthly trainings and networking events on topics such as early literacy, the importance of play to a child’s learning and how to deal with challenging behaviors. For more information about the FFN program, call 520-836-0736, ext. 13. Shirley Petty, a grandmother, participated in the San Tan Valley program for many years. Her granddaughter recently started kindergarten. “My granddaughter is as smart as a whip and she would not be where she is emotionally, academically or physically if it were not for the FFN monthly meetings,” Petty said. “I learned a wealth of up-to-date knowledge and information. After all, my children are grown and it was many years since I cared for a little one.” FTF also provides two statewide resources that can provide advice and support to grandparents raising their grandkids. The Birth to 5 Helpline (1-877-705-KIDS) is a free program and open to all Arizona families, with young children ages birth to 5, looking for the latest child development information from experts in the field. Then there’s the Arizona Parent Kit, which is given to families of newborns when they leave the hospital or available for check-out at many libraries, each kit includes: DVDs on everything from challenging behaviors to choosing child care, a book to encourage daily reading with infants and a list of community resources.

Supporting grandparents in their efforts to raise the next generation will help create a strong foundation of learning, growth and success for all children.About First Things FirstFirst Things First is a voter-created, statewide organization that funds early education and health programs to help kids be successful once they enter kindergarten. Decisions about how those funds are spent are made by local councils staffed by community volunteers. To learn more, visit FirstThingsFirst.org.

For the second straight game, the San Manuel football team came out “flat,” according to head coach Dan Williams, and the result was the Miners’ third-straight defeat to start the season. This time it was a 38 – 8 loss at Veritas Prep last Friday night. “We came out flat in the first half,” Williams told the Miner following the loss. “We didn’t play up to par. I was really

disappointed with the level of intensity we brought in the first half.”The Miners played the second half with more intensity, but by that time the game was already decided. “It was a case of too little, too late,” Williams said. Senior Andrew Gomez accounted for the Miners’ lone score, a rushing touchdown that avoided a shutout. Williams was asked where his team needs to make the biggest improvement in order to have success going forward this season.

His answer was hardly a surprise. “I’d have to say intensity,” he responded. Indeed, no surprise. The Miners will try to end their three-game skid this Friday at home versus Miami, which is coming of a 12 – 8 loss to rival Globe in the Copper Kettle Game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

After several weeks of practices, the Miner Swim Team opened the season at Palo Verde on Sept. 1. It was a dual meet with both Miners Boys and Girls teams winning. The Boys won by a score of 39 to 29, winning 9 out of the 11 races contested. The Girls won by a score of 51 to 30, winning 8 out of the 11 races contested. The Boys Team started things off with a win in the Medley Relay. Senior Robert Sweeney, Sophomore Michael Primero-Predgo, Senior Colbey Stratton and Sophomore Daniel Garcia teamed up to easily win the opening event. Robert Sweeney went on to win the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle. Senior Michael Garcia won the 200 IM and 100 Back. Colbey Stratton won the 50 Free and 100 Butterfly. Michael Primero-Predgo won the 100 Freestyle. The Miners were beat in a close 200 Freestyle relay but came back at the final event to win the 400 Freestyle Relay. The Girls relay team of Sophomore Darien Apuron, Sophomore Gianna Sweeney, Sophomore Jasmine Smith, and Junior Raya Woods also got things going with a win the Medley Relay. Raya Woods went on to win the 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle. Darien Apuron won the 200 IM and 100 Fly. Gianna Sweeney won the 50 Free and 100 Breaststroke. The Miners came back to win the 400 Freestyle relay

with the team of Freshman BaiLee Hill, Darien Apuron, Raya Woods, and Gianna Sweeney. Head Coach Alex Gort was happy to see the Miners swimming fast times at the opening meet. “We have been practicing eight times a week along with weight training and everyone is a little sore. To see the times as fast as they are is a very good sign for later in the season. Several Miners had their first taste of High School competition and they all swam well,” Gort said. Freshman Zara Allmendinger, Freshman BaiLee Hill, Sophomore Bonnie Bridges, and Sophomore Daniel Garcia all competed in their first High School Swim Meet and made key contributions to the team scores. Daniel Garcia was named Dynamite Swimmer of the Week by the team Captains. For a swimmer at his first meet of any kind, Garcia swam very solid legs on all three relays to help secure the team win. Garcia finished in 4th place in the 50 Free with time 11 seconds faster than he had ever swam previously. Throw in his positive attitude, and there are no doubts as to why he was named as Dynamite Swimmer of the Week. Miners host Arizona College Preparatory School at the San Manuel Pool on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m.

Because an Oracle woman could see the dark skies above Oracle at her home, she founded the Steward Observatory on the University of Arizona campus. On October 18, 1916, newspapers announced that an anonymous donor had donated $60,000 (today’s equivalent, about $1.33 M) for the purpose. After her death on August 10, 1917, Lavinia Steward was revealed as the donor who had given the money in memory of her husband who had died 15 years earlier. This year, the Steward Observatory and the Dark Skies Committee of Oracle are sponsoring activities in recognition of the centennial of that donation, so important in establishing the institution that has become a center for astronomical studies world-wide. The first event is coming up in Oracle on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 at Oracle State Park, an International Dark Sky Park. From 5:30 - 7:00 p.m., Dr. Tom Fleming of the Steward Observatory will be presenting the history of the Observatory in the Kannally House followed by star gazing using the Park’s and Tucson Amateur Astronomers’ Association telescopes on the patio. Lavinia Steward and nephew Frederick J., who had been raised as their son in Peoria, Illinois, had come to Oracle,

as did many others, for Fred’s health, staying at the Mt. View Hotel (now the Baptist Church) from 1895 onward. By 1898, Lavinia was said to be “digging a well and putting up a windmill” as well as designing and overseeing the building of that “magnificent house” at the corner of American Avenue and Linda Vista — the house that so many admired as they entered Oracle after its completion in 1900. That year, husband Henry retired from being a partner in the Peoria Oat Meal Mills, and moved to the house his wife had built. But he lived only about a year, dying of heart disease on Oct. 16, 1901. Fifteen years later, with Fred established in banking in Tucson and his children visiting Oracle to look through her 3-inch telescope, Lavinia was concerned to hear that the University was in need not only of its own telescope of suitable size, but of an observatory building. The Arizona legislature had repeatedly turned down such funding. So she donated money for both. The donation bought the telescope (which is now in use at Kitt Peak) and paid for half the cost of the Observatory itself. Because of the interference of WW I in getting the telescope made, it was 1923 before the Observatory was dedicated. However, Steward Observatory and its director, Andrew Ellicott Douglass, went on to spark a world class program in astronomy at the University of Arizona. Douglass, who might otherwise have been forced

Sept. 10 Oracle State Park event begins centennial celebrations for the Steward Observatoryto leave the U of Arizona for lack of funding, also founded the science of dendrochronology - tree ring research, thus increasing the debt that scientists world-wide owe to Oracle’s Lavinia Steward. The next scheduled event in the celebration of the Steward Observatory Centennial will be at the observatory on the University of Arizona Campus, Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in room N210: a screening of Focusing the Universe, a new film on the history of the Steward Observatory with a panel discussion following. After the talk, the reflector telescope in the historic Steward Observatory dome will be open for public viewing of the night sky (weather permitting). All is free of charge and open to the general public. For more information, contact Dr. Thomas Fleming at 621-5049 or [email protected]. Future events in Oracle celebrating the centennial include a showing, in November, of astrophotography by Adam Block of the Mt. Lemmon Sky Center, an adjunct of Steward Observatory. The final Oracle event will be the Dec. 18 Celestial Concert by the Oracle Piano Society which includes Block’s astrophotography, a talk about “The Bethlehem Star” by a member of the Vatican Observatory which is associated with the Steward Observatory — and of course, dark sky viewing. Tickets for that event will be available after September 1 at the Oracle Piano Society website http://www.oraclepianosociety.org/home. Read more online at www.copperarea.com.
