Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Hi Christian,

Thank you for the nice compliments.

I have Matthews, Bogen/Manfrotto and Alian Bee stands. The AB stands (LS3900, Casters and boom armw/Counterweight) work just great and I would buy them again. The casters really make the lights easier to move aroundwith the frequent set changes.

The one thing that I now use with all of my stands are weight bags or sandbags to ensure stabilization, especially whenI'm using the (very heavy) 33" Mola Beauty Dish or the 60" Octodome. I also found 1, 2 and 5 pound (lead) shot (diving)weight bags at my local Sports Authority. These are small and work great in stabilizing the small background light stands.

The Plexiglas was purchased froma local plastics distributor. I buy it in sheets that are 6' x 8' x 1/4". You'll have to checkyour local Yellow Pages for a distributor near you. Mine was able to deliver the the sheets for $35. Home Depot did notcarry these sheet sizes and thickness. Be prepared to do plenty of maintenance to keep the plexi in good condition. Theymar and scratch very easily. They are also very cumbersome to move by yourself and and take up a lot of storage space. Ipicked up a $20 car polisher and polish pads and use a cleacoat liquid car wax to buff out the scratches and to put aprotective layer to prevent some maring and scratching.

The black curtains are 30' x 9' and are of a very heavy black felt material that I found on Ebay in the photoequipment/backgrounds/studio section. I purchased the ceiling-mounted curtain-rail hanging system from an on-linehospital supply house. To hang the curtain, I picked up brass grommets and the tool to install them at Home Depot foraround $10.

I hope the info helps.

Best regards,John

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Uhhhh.... Tough act to follow. John, your work is nothing short of inspiring. I would have to say that my entry representsthe other end of the spectrum. Having no money to invest in photography at present, I still wanted to learn lighting. So Icobbled the setup beolw together. I have more money invested in Duct tape than anything else. I would not say that it isin any way up to the quality standards around here, but it gives us something to learn and practice with until we canafford a light setup.

Truly a spacious studio, storage room converted to play area. Massive 7'6" ceilings ensure that we do not have tocompromise our light setup.

The results, well, they are good enough to share with family for now, and I would say that I have learned alot along theway.

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

I am just starting out, and I am slowly building up all the things I need to make a studio...I have no room for one, but ohwell.

I just use dis-assemble the living room, and go from there. On the right is an Alien Bee 800 in a large softbox. The leftlight is an Alien Bee 1600 with a honeycomb grid on it.

A concept I was working on for a class:

And...one of my favorites...some of you have seen this.

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Funny you should ask if the cat was drinking too. Here is the problem...How do you get a 5 week old kitten to stand still ina spot that is barely as wide as she is?!?!?

Answer...you put something that has a very strong scent right where you want her to stand...then you can tear it out ofthe way and get ONE shot before she tries to attack your camera.

Prob can get plexiglass from Home Depot... I know they have lots of sizes...not sure if it'll be as big as John's though.

Also, I'd suggest www.amvona.com for light stands and booms. I have about 7 of their stands, plus lights, backdrops, etc. i support them fully. I have a wholesale membership ($45/yr) with them...which gives me about 1/2 off retail prices of

similar products to Photoflex...same quality better price (IMHO). But I got most of mine off of their eBay store for about1/3 of the wholesale prices! Amazing! VERY Strong ....almost identical to Photoflex and Bogen products. give em a try.

I'm about to buy some studio equipment, and a thread like this is more helpful than all those confusing pages googlefound me about lighting.

Thank you so much guys!

Please keep them coming...

JohnE, you're my new hero. Great descriptions and really really stunning shots. Just a Q: do you actually need the B1600,meaning, do you often/regularly use it at full power, could you manage with a B800 just as well?

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Rob (Walter Mitty),Thank you for the compliment. You image is excellent. I'll admit :-) Its really nice to be able to have good equipment (Isink all of the money from surfing photo sales back into the business to be able to have the good stuff.) However, I ammuch more amazed and impressed at the stunning quality of work produced by many people here at FM's such as yourselfand Roley (just to mention two), who product top-notch work with minimal and even home-grown equipment. I take myhat off to you and those that produce such excellent work with minimal equipment and huge passion.

Brian (vizualgraphix)I've heard nothing but the best about Amvona. They have a great reputation. When I first started looking for plexiglas, Iwent straight to Home Depot. I was able to buy two sheets of 1/8" x 2' x 6'. I had a few problems with these sheets: (1) Ialways had to painstakingly clone out the seam between the sheets, (2) 1/8" is too thin when working on a soft/carpettedsurface as the model's weight causes the plexi to dimple (bow) and (3) 6' x 6' was just a bit too small.

Karusel,! Thanks for the (hero) compliment. As for the AB1600... yep I do use it on full power at times... mostly when I shoot

outside, like when we shoot in the pool during the daylight and the light is 15-20 feet from the subject under a difusionpanel.

clhurtt,Just wanted to compliment you on your great shot of the kitten. One of the best I've seen. Too cute. Might be a good oneto sell to a stock agency? :-)

John

Wow, what a great thread. Thanks to all who shared. Don't have anything to share myself except to say I also have a pairof the Home Depot hot lights and have modified them so they fit on my light stands. I've also used them in the past tomood light natural background outdoors at night for portraits. In studio (living room!) I use them bounced off bigreflectors and have been having some fun getting into studio lighting this way, learning a bit more each time. My payingwork is outdoor action and portrait that is available light only or with just a bit of fill so this is a new arena for me and I'mgrateful for this nice thread with such great ideas and wonderful explanatory images. Not to mention the GREAT KITTENSHOT Really awesome. And all of your stuff too, John E.- really inspirational. I'll bet you are not lighting those poloponies!

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

John,

A quick question... what type of flooring do you have in your studio?

I'm finishing off my basement and will be setting up a small studio in a couple of months. Don't want to leave the floorcement (too cold and hard), but at the same time I don't think a fluffy carpet would work because seamless paper wouldcrumple and crease with any weight on it. Any recommendations?

Thanks,Terry

JohnE,

Thanks for posting the photos of your setup AND the results... that really helps see how the light positions and the endresults of the sessions. Great work!

What type of black curtain material are you using to isolate your backdrop and subject? Would any medium density blackfabric work? Or is there a better product out there?

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Terry,

I'm converting my garage and will be using a Home Depot brand of Pergo plank flooring. Used it in my living room andoffice, easy to put in and with the underflooring it softens the step on it (don't know if that makes sense). Anyway itcomes in different styles and colors as well.

Yes, we have Pergo flooring in the studio up to the high key staging area.Studio was once a loft for a feed store with huge trap doors to floor below. Now we are above a jewelry store. Camera stand , light stands and camera platforms roll easily on Pergo and give a nicewarm feeling to the studio. Also very easy to clean.

Hi Terry,

I have a concrete floor, over which we had installed (glued down) industrial-grade (not-fluffy) tight weave, gray carpetfrom Carpeteria. the 22' x 30' space cost approx. $900.

Hope this answers your question.John

John,

Yes, this is the information I was looking for. Since you mentioned you glued it down, I'm assuming that there is nocarpet pad underneath.

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Great, now I get an idea of what makes a good studio. Off to go buy some plexyglass and some extra difusers. Below ismy useful but now not that impressive setup. I'm in the first picture.

What length muslin backdrops should I get? 10x12 I think is fine, but maybe I should shell out the few extra bucks to get10x16 or so.

You're work is great, and the illustrations are spectacular. Having hunted for books on setting up a studio, and foundsome of the not bad, but ancient works (like the Lighting Cookbook), you could certainly produce a best-selling book outof a collection of your "here's the setup - here's the result" pairings.

Thanks for sharing!

Yep, you are correct. No carpet pad underneath and a bit hard on the knees after 4-6 hours of shooting. :-)

I'd get what you can afford. The 16' will give you enough mateial to run from ceiling to florr and then 8' or so towardsyou. This will allow you to keep the model a good 6' from the backdrop and will (depending on the aperture), wouldfacilitate a blurry background.

By the way, nice setup.

Its not about the size (its nice if you have it. ), but more about what you need and what you do with it. Kortney and Ishoot everything from models to products (skateboards, surfboards, individual parts, jewelry, etc.) We sacrificed a 3 cargarage and permanently turned it into a studio with separate heating, air conditioning, cabinetry and recessed lighting tohelp us grow the business. The city has been great and we've been licensed for 5 years now.

Good luck.

Hi John, I too found your before and after photos amazing. There is a site where you could put together a calendar and sell it veryreasonable. http://www.cafepress.com . I know I would be one of the first in line to purchase it as I am relatively new tostudio lighting and your set up photos really help me to grasp the ideas. It would be very easy to setup the before andafter on the photo side of the calendar.

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

wow, this is a great thread. I've always appreciated so many of you guys' pics here and it's nice to see how they arecreated. I used to have my little set up in my warehouse loft apartment. It was nice to have the 15 ft. ceilings but I rarelyused the height as I mainly do product shots. I just started using plexiglass and frosted glass for shoots. I'll try to getsome pics of my current set up in a bit but here is one from a product shot a couple of months ago. The clients were the"stylists" here setting up the product. I look forward to when I can upgrade my lighting to some alien bees as well. Theylook like great lights and from what I've seen of your stuff here at FM, they work great too! Keep up the good workeverybody!

Thanks for the tip Chris. Rolley really inspired me to shoot more of the behind the scenes stuff (man he does great work!)So now I'm pretty much shooting a setup shot for each wardrobe or lighting change on all of my shoots. If I post anythingin the future, I'll be sure to include a behind the scenes shot.

Thanks JohnE, product shots pay the bills and I get better each time I do a session. Learning how to keep the glare downon those bright white packages these days by diffusion! I hope someday to get to the level of what you and your daughterare doing with your "vargas girls" photos. Love the polish that you put on each photograph. That's what makes it art!

Let's see more studios people!! We all learn from each other.

ibJames, I mainly use softboxes. Never have really used umbrellas but I'm from the advertising photography side of thebusiness and we just always used softboxes. I use barn doors with gels and raw lights without any diffusion forbackground and effects from time to time.

I think JohnE and others will agree with me, the best way to learn is just get in the studio and start moving things aroundand see what works best for you.

Good luck!

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

I was thinking about buying some continuous lighting for lighting the backdrop (no need to have expensive strobes forthat), but someone stopped me before and said don't ever mix lighting. So that's to you slruser if you're trying to figureout what things to buy. If you go for strobes, go all the way. If you go for continuous (and don't mind the air conditioningbills), then do all them that way.

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Oh sure, I had one x800 White Lightning on approx 3/4 power shooting thru a Photoflex large Multidome with two silverand two gold panels in it, approx 7ft from the Model.

One the other side I had another x800 White Lightning, at approx. 3/8 power bounced into a Calumet Umbrella.

The hair light was on the Boom, overhead, a B400 on approx. 1/2 power and a 10 degree grid in it.

The background is a Photek, Black, velvet-like material.

I had a B800 on 1/4 power shooting a pink gel on the background, when I saw that the black background was prettymuch swallowing up all the pink from the background light, I turned it onto the Model, you can see the extra pink highlites on her left side, I liked it as it added a certain warm glow..

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Steven, thanks for the picture of the studio, and the example shot. I am going nuts trying to figure out what to buy. I amthinking three WL x800's, but if they won't go low enough, and the x1600 is better because of the 1/4 switch which willlet them go lower than the x800 then I am needing to rethink my purchase. It seems crazy to buy a more powerful light inorder to go lower. If thats indeed an issue, then I would probably be better buying AB400's. I don't want to have to shootall my shots at f22.

What was the aperture on the pink shot above?

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

A question for all those who use reflectors. What is the best general all purpose reflector you own? I'm gonna pick one upto start playing with some natural light portrait/macro/product stuff and want to start very basic.

Tips would be good ta. I have been looking at the lastolite range or 30com or 50cm relfectors.

May I know where can I get the gold reflector in your third setup? What kind of stand did you use for this reflector? Youand your daughter are very creative and talented.

Thanks Seth. Kortney and I appreciate the compliment.

The reflector is from PhotoFlex and it is their LitePanel reflector Kit. The material for the one that I have is gold on oneside and white on the other. The frame is 6' x 3' and the whole thing collapses and stores in its bag. I purchase both thereflector material and the difusion material.

You can purchase the stand and the stand-to-frame connectors for it (I did.)

I also bought the 7' x 7' version and have suspended it over a pool with the difusion material to tone down the directsunlight for a recent shoot (I think there is a photo somewhere on FM's where I show it suse.

Hope this helps.John

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Man, I really like all of your set ups. I managed to attain quite a few neat ideas from the photo's that I saw. Unfortunatlydue to renting a small studio apartment, I don't have much room, but I may have the length to pull of a few shots. I willdefinetly have to try this out. Ofcourse I need lighting first. lol..

Thanks for the posts guys, you all just inspired 1 more person to set up a in home studio.

Are the black curtains on either side that you like to use there to control spill from the background lights? Does it makemuch of a difference?

Dasch, are those shoot thru umbrellas and are you using them to illuminate the backdrop? After I saw John mention usingumbrellas to light his backdrop (earlier on this thread), I called BH to discuss this approach. They said they'd never heardof using umbrellas for the background. I went ahead and ordered two eclipses, but the shafts are too big for my profotosso they're going back. I'd like to hear more about lighting backdrops with umbrellas before I try other umbrellas. Anythoughts on using photek softlighter IIs (which are designed with a 7mm shaft for the profotos)?http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=WishList.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=109112&is=REG It's either those or profoto umbrellas.

Also, can you share your thoughts on barndoors? Somebody suggested that I try barndoors instead of umbrellas to lightthe backdrop, as well as to provide greater control for any of the lights. I got some cinefoil to do some light control, butthe person I spoke with about barndoors was contemptuous when I mentioned cinefoil.

By the way, seeing these pictures of your studio brought back some great memories! I hope you will consider hosting usagain. When it gets a bit warmer.

Ciao,Elle

Elle:

I don't know about Daschund but I use umbrellas to light backgrounds often. You can check out the results on my websitewww.secondfocus.com scroll over "webBooks" and click on "Studio".

Strobes with barndoors are just another way of doing things. Different lighting, different controls, different looks.

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Hi Ian, thanks for responding. I've visited your site before, which I really enjoy. Both the design and photography. Afterseeing what you and JohnE are doing with umbrellas on the background (and I'm sure these are just one of your tools),I'm going to look further into getting the right umbrellas for my strobes.

Before I commit to umbrellas, though, can you tell me whether umbrellas your preferred method for lightingbackgrounds? Or would barndoors be more versatile? I need something in addition to the zoom reflectors, which arecreating hot spots, but I can't get everything at once.

Thanks,Elle

P.S. I may have missed it in this thread but . . . how about a shot of your studio?

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Elle,

Buy the umbrellas. They are cheap, versatile and very useful for so many different types of lighting and shooting, as wellas very portable. So you will never regret having them.

I will try to remember to shoot some behind the scenes shots on my shoots this week.

And THANKS for the compliments!

Does it make much of adifference?

Thanks for the compliments Matt... and you're right, we all love the compliments.

As for the black curtains... Yes, they are there to not only control direct spill but also to absorb all of the bounced lightfrom the all white walls and ceiling. I've found, that since putting up the curtains, I have much richer (and less washedout) colors.

Thanks for asking.

John E- Wanted to p.m. you after your "hearmuffs" post, but I'm so new to this board that I felt a little uncomfortable...

Great contributions to a great thread.

John, thanks so much for sharing your shots, both the setups and the final results. I hope you and Cortney get around to doing abook/calendar of these, I think you'd find a bunch of buyers (I'd want my copy autographed, of course). I love the Vargas-style shots.

Thanks for the kind compliments Elle. The calendar idea has been mentioned a few times. I'll have to mention it toKortney. Who knows, it might be fun the create a sample.

Thank you!

But in answer to your query... yes AND no. Yes we did catch the squirt. I didn't know it at the time since you can't see iton the LCD viewer and I wasn't tethered since I was up to my chest in water.

When we finished with the model, my daughter squeezed about a dozen lemon slices and I captured the squirt.

When I went to process the original photo, I had found that we had captured the original squirt but it wasn't enough inour opinion, so... I added some of the squirt from another shot.

Kind regards,John

Re: Show us YOUR Studio

Elle,

I think that whoever from B&H that you talked to had never entered a serious studio... I'd say that everybody that I knowor seen shooting have always used umbrellas (either shoot through or bounce of (more common) to light a background, unless they wanted a gradation or something... Always umbrellas. I used shoot through umbrellas on the setup I postedhere because I wanted a "wrap around" light, something like this, otherwise I'd use bounce umbrellas...
