Brevard HS softball season looks loadedBrian McCallum, FLOLL RIRR DII A TODAYAA 10:37 p.m. ESEE T FeFF bruaryr 26,6 2015
If February polls mean anything, 2015 could offff er a season to remember in local high school softff ball.
In rankings compiled by Miracle Sports, six Brevard County high school softff ball teams weww re ranked among thebest in the state in their classifications this weww ek. The highest-ranked weww re Astronaut, No. 2 in Class 4A, andMelbourne Central Catholic, the same in 3A.
Viera, now 12-0, waww s third in 7A and Melbourne seventh. Rockledge waww s fiftff h in 5A, and behind the WarEagles in 4A waww s Cocoa Beach, at No. 4.
“I think all the teams that are ranked right now are legit. I do,” Melbourne coach Brad Soughers said. “They’resolid teams, and weww ’re all pretty close.”
Only the Hawkww s are unbeaten. Viera coach Dale Pierce has been pleasantly surprised by his team, whww ich includes just twoww seniors.
“We’re hitting home runs, and weww ’ve never hit home runs before,” he said. Pitcher Kiana East hit a big one in the sixtxx h inning Tuesday to lead a 3-2comeback wiwwn over Melbourne, whww ich played in the 7A state tournament last year.
Viera has already woww n an early season tournament at Lake Mary, whww ere Pierce said his team beat three strong opponents from the Gulf Coast area. But he has been impressed by more than his ownww team.
“There are a lot of surprises,” Pierce said. “Rockledge is going to be one to contend wiwwth the nextxx twoww years.”
The Raiders have a wiwwn over Astronaut, whww ich has beaten Cocoa Beach. Melbourne, in turn, has beaten Rockledge and waww s scheduled to visit theMinutemen on Thursday.
PHOTOS: Melbourne at Cocoa Beach on Thursday (/picture-gallery/sports/2015/02/26/photos-melbourne-at-cocoa-beach-girls-softff ball/24096565/)
I think a lot of (the high rankings) has to do wiwwth how the team teams ended last season,” Minutemen coach Wayne Moore said, “but there are a lot ofgood teams here.”
Returning star Megan Kugelmann leads the Minutemen on the mound. Along wiwwth East at Viera, Holli Jones at Astronaut and Melbourne’s duo ofShelby Alsdorf and Melanie Murphy, the area has plenty of pitching talent, but Moore sees “an awfww ul lot of good hitters, too.”
“We’re all a little diffff erent in terms of whww at has gotten us there,” Soughers said. “We’ve all riden diffff erent horses, but I think weww ’re all legit.”
Landers agreed wiwwth Moore’s assessment that some of the early season attention is due to reputation. He did predict continued success.
“I think, in the long run, you’re still going to see those teams in the polls,” he said. “I think whww at you’re going to find is one or twoww losses may tie for firstin the Cape Coast Conference. If someone can roll through this conference unbeaten, they definitely deserve that trophy.”
