Foreword

At our church I feel so fortunate to have a gifted and passionate ministry team to plan alongside.Something always comes out of those meetings to inspire and direct us to an idea our church needs to hear during the next season. We try to write at least one new song to capture the heart of what we want to say at Christmastime. Last year that song was “The Light Has Come.” It’s not a new idea to compare Jesus to a light coming into a dark world, but we wanted to take a step further to explore what difference that light should be making in our lives. This song declares, “Jesus is the Light of the world; He opens our eyes; He conquers the lies; He is the Truth!” In an ever-changing world, determined to run further and faster away from the truth of God, Jesus is the Everlasting Light that will lead us back to the truth of who He is, and who we are in Him.

Around the time we finished writing “The Light Has Come,” Brentwood Benson approached me about creating a Christmas musical. Not only was I grateful for the opportunity, but even more that they encouraged me to use Camp Kirkland and Daniel Bondaczuk who serve alongside me at our church. We set to work and put together a musical celebration for Christmas that wouldeventually become “Light & Life: Celebrating the Light of the World and the Giver of Life.”

Light & Life is widely based on the stirring lyric of “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing,” by Charles Wesley. You’ll hear it woven through the lyrics of the original songs as well as the opportunity for the congregation to respond by triumphantly singing:

“Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings

Risen with healing in His wings...”

That’s the gospel we can sing at Christmastime! God bless you as you seek to tell this beautiful,age-old story again this year! Glory to the newborn King!

John 1:9-12 says, “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right

to become children of God...”

Because of the advent of Jesus, we can know LIGHT & LIFE in a way we never could have otherwise. When Jesus came, He brought LIGHT for us to see the reality

of who He is, and LIFE so we could know the reality of our creator as a Father.

LIGHT & LIFE is a 30-minute musical for the Christmas season, with optional narration, intended to help your church worship Jesus as the Light of the World and the

Giver of Life. This collection of songs is based on the first chapter of the Gospel of John, and the stirring lyric of the beloved carol, “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing”

by Charles Wesley. Created by Kirk Kirkland and arranged for choir, orchestra, and worship leaders by Camp Kirkland, Daniel Bondaczuk and Cliff Duren.
