*Note that the seam allowance when sewing will be 3/8" and it is included in the measurements above.

After cutting out all of the pieces you should have a pile similar to this.

www.CreateKidsCouture.com v3.0 2/21/2014Cutting Out Shorts:

When printing out the shorts pattern pieces make sure the "Auto Rotate and Center" Box is ticked and page-scaling is set to "None". This is VERY important. After cutting out the pattern pieces in the size we are

making, tape the black lines together so they are one on top of another and the letters match up.* Note , Be sure to cut the correct pattern piece with the options you are using on your shorts.

Step 1: To cut your shorts pieces, lay the pattern piece on your fabric facing up, cut 2. Now place the pattern piece facing down and cut 2 more. You should now havefour legs cut out - 2 with the crotch facing to the right and 2 facing to the left.

Construction:

Step 1: We will begin by creating the elastic casing on the pockets. To do so we will fold and press 1/4" down all along the top edge. Now we fold over an additional 1/2" down and iron.

Step 2: Now we can sew an 1/8" from the bottom of our fold making sure to backstitch at both ends.

Step 3: Thread our 1/4" elastic through the casing, making sure that it doesn't twist while doing so. We will then sew the elastic in place at both ends.

Step 4: We are now going to pin the pocket piece on to the center panel, by lining up the bottom and side edges.

Step 5: Now we are going to baste stitch out pocket to the center panel as shown in red.

Step 6: In this step we are going to be attaching the front and back leg pieces to the center panel. We will take one shorts piece and one center panel piece and sew them with the fabric right sides together along the straight edge as shown in red. Repeat to the other side.

Step 7: Topstitch downside both leg pieces as shown in green to the right.

Repeat steps 1-7 with the other leg so that you now have two completed legs.

Step 8: Take both of the leg pieces, put them right sides together, and sew around the two curves shown in red. This will become the front middle and back middle of our shorts.

Step 9: Line up the two crotch pieces, as shown to the right, with the right sides together and pin. The two seams we have just sewn will now be going down the middle of the front and back. Sew along the red line as indicated. It should now begin looking like shorts!

Step 10: Take one of the leg cuffs and fold it right sides together, sew up the short side so that we have a continuous loop. Repeat with the other leg cuff.

Step 12: Fold the cuff in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing and iron to set. Topstitch the bottom of the cuff by sewing 1/8" up around the entire bottom fold.

Page 7: Brennas Bubble Pocket Shorts

www.CreateKidsCouture.com v3.0 2/21/2014 Step 13: Here we will gather our shorts to sew our cuff too. Set the sewing machine on the longest stitch length possible. Sew 1/4" down from the top of each leg making sure not to backstitch at the beginning or end. Some seamstresses prefer to have two rows of stitching in case a thread breaks, however, if you are using high-quality thread as we do, then one row of stitching should be sufficient.

Take the cuff and lay it on a flat surface for reference on how wide our pant legs needs to be. Begin gathering the leg by pulling the top 2 threads and moving the fabric back so it is gathered together.

When it looks like it is the right width, we can begin pinning the cuff piece to the leg by putting the right sides together and adjusting the gathers as we go. At this point we will know if it is gathered too much or too little and it is easier to adjust correctly. Be sure to match up the seams exactly and pin well! Repeat with the second leg and second cuff piece.

Step 14: We can now sew on the cuff piece to the leg. Be sure to sew below the gathering line otherwise it will be visible on the outside when we are done

Step 15: We can now flip down the cuff and topstitch our leg down as shown from where we attached the cuff, being sure to catch the seams.

If you are making a normal waist, continue below. If you are making the ruffle waist, skip to Step 19.

Step 16: Here we will make our waist band! Starting at the center of the back of our pants, fold back and press 1/4" down all the way around.

Now we fold over an additional 1" down and iron, pinning as we go making sure to match up seams at side.

Step 17: Now we can sew 1/8" up from the bottom of our fold all the way around the waist being sure to leave a 1" opening as shown.

Step 18: Using a safety pin, we may now thread our 3/4" elastic through the waist casing making sure that it doesn't twist while doing so. When we reach the end, sew the two elastic ends together again making sure that it is not twisted.

Page 9: Brennas Bubble Pocket Shorts

Once sewn together, pull the waist and spread the fabric around so it is evenly distributed. We can now sew the 1" opening close.

Step 19: We will now make our waistband. Starting at the center of the back of our pants, fold back 1/4" down all the way around and iron.

Now, fold back an additional 2.5" and iron. Pin as we go making sure to match up the side seams.

Step 20: Now we can sew 1/8" from the bottom of our fold all the way around the entire waist being sure to leave 1 " opening as shown.

Step 21: Now we are going to draw a second line 1" up from the top of the pants waist. This line will finish the casing for the elastic and the extra fabric above the casing will ruffle once the elastic is added. Sew around the entire top on the line we just drew. Leave no opening this time.

Step 22: Using a safety pin, thread the 3/4" elastic through the chest casing making sure that it doesn't twist while doing so. When we reach the end, sew the two elastic ends together again making sure that it is not twisted. Once sewn together, pull the waist and spread the fabric around so it is evenly distributed.

We can now sew the 1" opening closed.
