A consulting company and provider of engineering services with its very own port – this sums up bremenports GmbH & Co. KG precisely. We have managed the port infrastructure in Bremen and Bremerhaven on behalf of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen since January 2002.

Our experts maintain close contact with the shipping and logistics industries to ensure that port development in the Federal Land of Bremen (one of the 16 German States, consisting of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven) is systematically geared to demand. They plan and implement construction projects such as Container Terminal 4 (completed in 2008) and Kaiserschleuse lock (2011) and attend to the operation, maintenance and repair of the complex maritime infra-structure. We are increasingly marketing their technical, nautical and ecological expertise to customers in Germany and abroad – all of which makes bremenports a highly interesting partner for projects the world over.

Last but not least we are constantly doing everything in our power to strike a sensible balance between economy and ecology. Becoming a green port involves highly diverse factors: the disposal of shipboard waste, ecological compensation, the treatment of dredged material and alternative energy concepts for its own business premises are just some of the many „green logistics“ activities carried out by bremenports.

In a nutshell: we are a powerful and flexible provider of public infra-structure which will lead the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven syste-matically into the future.

PORT develOPMenT

What are the trends for cargo handling and maritime logistics? Are the customers’ expectations of the world port of Bremen/Bremerhaven changing? What investments have to be made in port infrastructure to ensure our long-term competitiveness? These are the key questions facing our port planning and development engineers. They analyse structures, keep a close eye on the market, observe developments at other port locations, identify the need for action, discuss solutions and make specific recommendations to political bodies, for instance in the form of port development concepts (master plans).

Our objective is to strengthen the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven on a sustainable basis. We want to improve their competitive position, increase their importance for the regional economy and for Germany as an export nation, and to respond proactively to the structural changes in the port-related logistics industry.

We constructthe ports of tomorrow

Over the past few decades, the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven have enjoyed dynamic growth, thanks to a strategy which ensures systematic and continuous capacity adjustment to meet the require-ments of the market. Based on its comprehensive expertise in tech-nical and commercial project planning and its extensive experience, bremenports plans, constructs and expands port facilities without ever losing track of the „port system“ as a whole.

In additional to conventional plant and civil engineering, we are increasingly entrusted with environmental planning projects. We assess and inspect existing facilities, and also plan and conduct main-tenance work. bremenports offers this range of services not only at the ports in the Federal Land of Bremen, but also to customers in Germany and abroad.

Ports and terminals have to be kept permanently safe for traffic and in good working condition, which means that the port infrastructure, i.e. the harbour basins, quays, operating areas and technical equip-ment, has to be carefully maintained. In Bremen and Bremerhaven, this is the responsibility of bremenports. As an infrastructure service provider, we attend to 34 kilometres of quays, the 250-kilometre long tracks of the terminal railway, 65 bridges, five locks and more than12 kilometres of dykes – round the clock, if need be.

Our dredging department ensures the necessary water depths are always available. We make sure that the recycling and/or disposal of all dredged material is ecologically sound. We are responsible for main- tenance of the terminal railway and flood protection installations and for expanding that infrastructure as required. We also operate the locks, bridges, flood barriers and other facilities. In winter, we not only ensure safety of the roads at the ports and terminals, but also use our tugs as ice-breakers. In case of storm tides, we check the condition of the dyke and close all gates and sluices to protect the city of Bremerhaven and the people who live there.

In the course of planning and constructing large-scale projects such as Container Terminal 4 (CT 4) and Kaiserschleuse lock in Bremerhaven, the engineers, port planning specialists and environmental experts at bremenports have accumulated comprehensive expertise over the years. Putting that expert knowledge to use on behalf of others and systematically marketing our specialist know-how on a global scale is the logical next step. We consequently offer public and private clients in Germany and abroad engineering services in connection with the construction of new port facilities.

Our experts analyse port structures, draw up development plans and advise ports on environmental issues. They also provide further edu-cation and training in logistics and port management for specialists from China, Indonesia, Timor Leste and Vietnam.

Amongst other things, we have modernised and expanded the port of Praia on the Cape Verde islands, analysed passenger transport on the Baltic, planned a new container terminal in Qatar, prepared a study on logistics and port operations in Madagascar, performed an environ-mental assessment in India and organised numerous international further training courses on port-related subjects.

When maritime experts get together at the logistics and transport trade fairs in Moscow, Shanghai or Munich, Bremen’s port and logis-tics industry is sure to be right there in the midst of it all, thanks to our marketing specialists. We organise location marketing on behalf of the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven using the brand VIA BREMEN. Prestigious joint stands provide port companies of all sizes with a perfect platform for professional presentation of their products and services.

But in addition to these activities, we also initiate and organise numerous customer events, showcase the ports and projects in brochures, publish a trade magazine at two-monthly intervals and look after national and international delegations and groups of visitors. We provide all the relevant facts and figures about Bremen/Bremerhaven as a port and logistics location, for instance on our port website.

In spring 2011, Bremen/Bremerhaven launched the new location brand VIA BREMEN, bundling its logistics expertise under this new high-impact, confident slogan.

Container Terminal 4 (CT 4)Any port that wants to keep up with the dynamic growth in container traffic has to be prepared to expand its own capacities. The container quay in Bremerhaven had already been extended by 340 m in the mid-1990s (CT IIIa). In the course of the mega-project Container Terminal 4 (CT 4), which was completed in 2008, the quay was lengthened by a further 1680 m and now measures around five kilometres. The results speak for themselves: CT 4 was completed 14 months ahead ofschedule and the costs were far lower than originally planned.

Kaiserschleuse lock When the 223-metre long Kaiserschleuse lock went into operation in 1897, it was the largest sea lock in the world. However, after roughly a century, it had become too small and narrow for the increasingly large car carriers which have made Bremerhaven the largest automotive logistics hub in Europe (throughput in 2011: more than 2 million new vehicles). A new lock had to be built and at the time, this was the largest project of its kind anywhere in Europe. After around three and a half years of construction work, the lock was ceremoniously inaugu-rated in spring 2011. A chamber length of 305 m and a passage width of 55 m ensure that it will be able to cope with the next generation of car carriers and safeguard the future of the port for decades to come.

Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven (OTB)Within just a few years, numerous wind energy companies have set up business in Bremerhaven. There has been a huge increase in demand for special port infrastructure for the pre-assembly and ship-ping of offshore wind turbines. Bremen Senate aims to make Bremer-haven the leading European location for wind turbine production and logistics and consequently resolved to build an additional offshore platform in January 2010.

The Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven (OTB) on the banks of the Weser is scheduled for completion by 2015 and will be executed as a fran-chise model. bremenports has been entrusted with overall manage-ment of the project, from the search for an investor and operating company, to the preliminary technical planning right through to environmental compensation measures. The total costs are expected to be in the region of EUR 200 million and are to be funded by aconsortium of private investors.

greenportsEconomy and ecology have to be reconcilable. This is a principle that the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven adopted years ago. Becoming a green port involves highly diverse factors: the disposal of shipboard waste, ecological compensation, the treatment of dredged material and alternative energy concepts for its own business premises are just some of the many „green logistics“ activities carried out by bremen-ports, with the aim of reducing ecological impact to a minimum.

This is clearly illustrated by the subject of compensation: as compen-sation for the construction of Container Terminals CT III and CT 4, we have created valuable habitats and refuges for rare species of flora and fauna on Grosse Luneplate and along the Wursten coast near Bremerhaven.

The success of a company depends to a great extent on the skills and qualifications of its workforce. bremenports makes considerable efforts when it comes to personnel recruitment, promotion and development.

Reconciling career and familyEnabling employees to combine career and a family is a priority issue at bremenports. We offer flexible working hours and different wor-king hours models. This commitment has earned us several awards from the non-profit Hertie Foundation since 2005, latterly in 2011.

Health and workEmployees who are physically and mentally fit tackle their day-to-day work more successfully and with more motivation. We launched our company health management programme in 2006 with that idea in mind.

Promotion of women at bremenportsThe working world of port construction and maintenance is still very much a male domain. Our target is to achieve a well-balanced staff structure, promote equal opportunities for men and women and increase the share of female employees in the technical, nautical and industrial sectors of the company.

Vocational training at bremenportsWe offer young people the chance to achieve sound professional quali-fications. Working in close cooperation with AFZ Bremen, a vocational training centre, we offer qualifications in nine different occupations for both female and male trainees, from industrial mechanic to surveyor, and from draughtswoman to management assistant for marketing communications.

Integration of disabled employeesOur objective is to assume corporate social responsibility. We give the severely disabled the chance of a career and their share of the work-force at bremenports meanwhile far exceeds the legal requirements.
