André Chénier, the most famous work by the Italian composer Umberto Giordano, is a brilliantly vivid histori- cal drama and a human tragedy of shattering intensity. Set against the background of the French Revolution, the ope- ra has strong appeal both as a passionate love story and as a historical thriller. André Chénier is based on the life of a real historical character, a French poet who got caught up in the turmoil of the French Revolution, first as an ardent sup- porter and then as a victim, mercilessly per- secuted and ultimately sent to the guillotine. Giordano’s music is charged with a furious enthusiasm and stirring emotions. Historical dances and marches from the time before the French Revolution can be heard in the opera as well as classic revolutionary songs including „Ça ira“ and the Marseillaise. „It seems as though André Chénier was composed especially for the Bregenz Seebühne. The opera presents a perfect mix of ingredients for the ve- nue: a thrilling story and three strong characters, caught between the excesses of the Ancien Ré- gime and the terror of the French Revolution. There is André Chénier, an idealistic poet, and his adversary Carlo Gérard, once a servant and now a revolutionary ringleader. And there is the young noblewoman Maddalena, who is fleeing from the rebels, aided by her maidservant, who sacrifices herself as a prostitute in order to sup- port her mistress. Giordano’s music is verismo of the very highest calibre and drives the high voltage plot forward with breathtaking speed.“ Artistic director, David Pountney Festival-Lounge A memorable evening for Festival connoisseurs The Festival-Lounge offers you and your guests all the privileges and comforts of an exclusive evening at the Bregenz Festival. World premiere/new commissionText and music by Judith Weir after a Sicilian folk tale. Sung in English with German surtitles.

The fi rst in a series of newly commissioned ope-ras to be performed at the Festspielhaus in the co-ming summer is the opera Achterbahn (Miss For-tune) by the British composer Judith Weir, jointly commissioned and co-produced by the Bregenz Festival and the Royal Opera Covent Garden.

The new opera was inspired by and based on an Italian folk tale called Sfortuna. It tells of a young woman whose wealthy family suddenly meets hard times. She decides to make her own way in the world, trying to exist by working in gruelling occupations. Each time her luck seems to turn for the better, she is thrown by another misfortune. Later, however, she makes the acquaintance of the personifi cation of her own Fate and after this, her life changes for the better.

ORCHESTRAL CONCERTS

Achterbahn (Miss Fortune) is a tale about fate, a kind of parable about the ups and downs of life – and about how we are often incapable of jud-ging the various trials of life in the moment they happen.

Judith Weir is one of the most interesting compo-sers to have come out of Great Britain in recent years. Her great interest in folklore and folk mu-sic — of Scotland, where her parents come from, but also such places as Iceland, India and China — has decisively infl uenced her very personal and original style. Many of Weir’s stage works are ba-sed on fantastical and dreamlike folk tales, refl ec-ting her fascination and passion for storytelling.

Christopher MouldsKirill PetrenkoXian ZhangGérard KorstenSir Mark Elder

The Omsk born Kirill Petrenko, the Briton Chri-stopher Moulds and the Chinese conductor Xian Zhang, three conductors who have previously given concerts at the Bregenzer Festspiele to great acclaim, return to conduct the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In addition on, two con-secutive days the Hallé Orchestra can be heard: Great Britain‘s oldest professional symphony or-chestra under its chief conductor Sir Mark Elder will perform for the fi rst time in Bregenz.

Kirill Petrenko is one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation. Born in 1972 in Omsk, western Siberia, he moved to Austria in 1990 and studied at the conservatory in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg, and at the Academy of Music in Vienna. Today, Petrenko is in demand at major opera houses and orchestras around the world.

Christopher Moulds studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal College of Music in London. Since then he has worked at English National Opera, the Royal Opera Covent Garden and at the Salzburg Festival.

The young Chinese conductor Xian Zhang is one of the still very small number of women con-ductors with an international reputation. Since her debut at Beijing Opera House, her interna-tional career has truly taken off: she regularly conducts the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and has been invited to be guest conductor of orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
