The three breeds

Landrace

White breed Free of the stress gen Long body and dropping ears.

Landrace use

Used as dam line High litter performances. Excellent maternal qualities. Crossed with yorkshire and criss cross sows

Yorkshire

White breed. Short and broad head. Protruding ears. Medium long body. Low shoulders No stress gene.

Yorkshire use

Dam line. Crosses with landrace and criss cross sows Yorkshire boars are used for production of

finishing pigs.

Duroc

Chestnut brown, varies from totally blond to almost black.

Short, broad and heavy head No stress gene.

Duroc use

Sire line. High daily gain and feed conversion ratio Used to make HD and DH boars It is now possible to get a white duroc, then

there is no longer a problem with coloured offspring.

Danavl

Danavl is the danish breeding system. The breeding herds selects breeding stock,

according to established breeding goals. Multiplier herds produce LY gilts. Production herds produce finishing pigs.

Cross breeding methods

One way crossing. Larger litter size, more obvious oestrus and

easier pregnancy are achieved. The majority of sows in Denmark are one way
