There simply are not words to express how deeply Arlene and Pat will be missed by their friendsat MLAC. Each in her own manner, they enriched the world of dogs in ways too numerous tocount. How hard it is to say goodbye to those who have meant so much to us, but we takecomfort in knowing that they will always be remembered with a smile on our faces and love in ourhearts.

MEMORIES OF A SPECIAL FRIEND
I will never forget her kindness to me—her thoughtfulness--her caring—her laughter—thelate night calls that went on for hours discussing our dogs.
I remember a frantic call I made years ago to Pat when I had a very sick puppy whose tempera-ture was dangerously high. Pat researched her Gazette for an article she remembered readingconcerning the treatment of newborn pups with high temperatures by submerging them in waterregulated to their normal body temperature. Pat read me the instructions and stayed on thephone with me until the puppy finally responded and began to nurse. We cried together thatnight—with relief. I am still thanking her for that night every time I look into the eyes of thepuppy who was not supposed to live, who is healthy and happy and five years old, and her nameis Dandi-Lion's Miracle (Mira).
I miss my Dear Friend—my Friend who was ALWAYS there for me

The Spirit of New England
Never let it be said that New Englanders don't
know how to have a good time, 'cause they surely do!
The hot (well, okay, barely warm) days of summer
started out in Rhode Island with MLAC hosting a pot-
luck picnic to welcome our visitors from Australia, Jenny
Longmire and Michael Camac. Great food, great con-
versation, and a terrific chance to exchange ideas and
opinions with two longtime breeders from the land down
under. Many, many thanks to all the MLACers who
brought tons of food and good cheer and, of course, to
Mary Powers and the Mokiema crew for the use of their
motor home to hold the festivities! On the show front, congratulations are in order
to new champions Ch. Anbara Alasara Smart Stuff
(Bobby Wood and Sarah Fitzgerald, shown by Mary
Powers) and Ch. Mokiema If The Shoe Fits (Marcia
Read) - good goin', ladies! In the classes, Ed Moses
picked up back to back majors on his little black beauty
at the Cape Cod shows, while Carla Fegan picked up a
niffty 4 pointer the same weekend on her bred-by, while
Joanie Karger and Marueen Stretch are nearing the fin-
ish line with their youngsters. And boy, oh boy, is our
specials ring something to see! Rita Cloutier and
"Tommy" are racking up some fantastic Breed wins,
topping them off with a Group Four at the Cape. Phyl-
lis Marcy's "Pip" is also coming up with some nice breed
wins, while the girl specials "Shay" (Marcia Read),
"Goldie" (Maureen Stretch) and "Angel" (Kathleen
Morrison) are proving that girls certainly can do any-
thing the boys do (with "Angel" downeasting it up to
Maine for a Group Three)! Congratulations to all you
and your lovely winners!MLAC hosted it's first ever Agility Match last
month, chaired by our very own Sy Bigman and cheered
on by Joe Menyo and yours truly. We had a terrific day,
even with a bit of a "rain delay" and now we're getting
all charged up for the real thing - our very first Agility
Trial in October. So don't anyone dare say that a Lhasa
is just another pretty face!!!!
On a serious note, I am very, very saddened to
report the deaths of two of MLAC's club members -
Arlene Dartt and Pat Hufnail. Both were very near and
dear to MLAC and ALAC members alike and the sport
of dogs has lost two very precious friends in their pass-
ing. That's about it for this month. We've got a
busy last quarter of the year on the horizon with MLAC's
Halloween Match and our inaugural December Specialty
Show coming up before you know it. So, until next
time, I guess we'd ALL better keep on trucicin' and keep
on brushin'!

The Northwest Connection
The summer show season has come and gone
with several of our ALAC members' Lhasas either get-
ting majors or finishing. Three lovely bitches are new
champions - "Gina", bred, owned and handled by Cas-
sandra, "Dixie", bred and owned by Barbara Corbett
and Arlene Miller and shown by Arlene, and "Cheezy",
bred and owned by Ann Lanterman and Leslie Ann
Engen. CLAF's 27th Specialty was the highlight of the
summer and the club members outdid themselves in the
hospitality department. Ann Lanterman, Barb Corbett,
Carol Hess, Pat Jackson and Joe and Lisa Mushel pro-
vided tents for all the exhibitors to groom under, close
to ringside - much appreciated by those of us who had
to come from a distance. Speaking of distances, ask
Cindy Butsic whether her trip out to Seattle was worth
it! After the Specialty, the club put on a first ever obe-
dience demonstration that had us all, including our judge
Keke Kahn, in awe. "Whopper" and "Chopper", trained
by Becky Hughes, were jumping over hurdles and re-
trieving specially scented dumbells with no problem.
"Sadie" and "Colby" challenged their owner Carol Hess
to keep things interesting and "Brie" showed her owner,
Barb Corbet, and all at ringside that she too could actu-
ally be obedient. It was a most entertaining and uplift-
ing way to end the Specialty. Afterward, all exhibitors
headed for the much anticipated potluck which has be-
come a tradition that just gets better every year!

From The Heart
Hi everyone, greetings from the Heartland!
Well, since I last wrote, I took a quick trip tothe land of lakes - Minnesota. I had an assignment tojudge the Shih Tzu Sweeps for the Twin Cities ShihTzu Club, so of course I had to go and watch the LhasaSpecialties!
This year, the Twin Cities Club had back-to-back Specialties, and, as usual, they offered a very goodtime. Club members brought food and put on a greatbuffet of snacks the first day, then a great lunch thesecond along with their raffle and fun auction. I always
end up bringing home the best items! Judges were Mrs.Roxanne P. Berton and Dr. R. Berndt. Rex Irwin hadthe job of Sweepstakes judge, doing a fme job findingGolden TJ Hatrick Josette as his Best in Sweeps, withmany lovely dogs being exhibited. Cindy Butsic, withher very nice silver bitch Stormy, took breed both days. Many thanks to all the Minnesota gang for a great time! Also, many thanks to my very special friends JanGraunke and Marsha Susag who always make for a funtime. Others joining in the fun included Sandy Nyberg,Barb Kelm, Joyce Johanson, JoAnn Hays & newcomerSusan Jordan, Sandy Bennet, Kathy Spickler-Dunn,Joyce Crowder, DeAnna Heller, Jeanne Suave, KrisCummings, Diane Selmer, Lynn Replogle, Dale Randall& Jaki Cottingham-Zierdt, Paul Voit, Jean Pantoga andmany more!
While I was off having fun in the Twin Cities, you'll never guess what was happening back home! Ihad left my newest star, Whitehouse Madame Senator, aka "Tori", home with Robyn to be shown at the K.C.Shows. She won all three days for her first points! Dadwas very excited. Also, there was the added excitementof Animal Planet taping there on Sunday at the Heart ofAmerica show. Well, of course I had to return home forthat! Darryl Martin was there and won breed the firstday at K.C. The second day's breed win went to a newmale, Hylan-Shotru Riverview Secret Deal, owned byPolly Naumann, out of the classes. On the third dayDarryl again won with her Ch. Martin's Sanlo PhilippePuff, owned by herself, Michael A. Santora & AlanLoso. If anyone is interested the show will be aired onOctober 23 on the Animal Planet.
Getting ready for a few more shows as "tis theseason" here in the Midwest. So again, I hope to see
you at the shows and winning, and, remember, it's al-ways from the Heart!

Mid-Atlantic News
Well, it has been busy down here to say the least. Please excuse me if this seems rather short on each sub-ject as there is just so much I want to share with you!
Let's start with Toni Kerr in Myrtle Beach, S.C.who has just had a total hip replacement. She is recov-ering at home with Ch. Knolwood Sir Winston watch-ing her every move! Bev Drake says her husband is homerecovering from an accident with a chain saw. His legis in a brace and must remain immobile for 12 weeks. And at almost the same time Anne Burton had a dia-betic insulin stroke. Margie Evans told me she realizedthe early signals and dialed 911 herself. Her quick ac-tion made her stay in the hospital shorter and she isexpected to make a full recovery. Anne, I'm so gladyou made it home from New York before this happened!Gina Pastrana and Meredith Morris, the ever-tirelessrescue person in this area, are taking care of Anne'sdogs.
Our sympathy goes out to Evette Squires (NorthCarolina) who lost her beloved obedience Lhasa andbest friend, Hopsing. Hopsing had been called out ofretirement several times to attend our Nationals, to thedelight of one and all. He was one of only a few Obedi-ence Lhasas to achieve a Utility degree and he was oneof only three with UDX legs. He went to work everyday with Evette and his absence will be felt at home aswell as work.
I just recently attended the Tuxedo Park, LA-COGNY, and Westchester Specialties. Here are someof the results:
Friday - Anne Burton took WB with SuntoryShiraz. WD and BOW were given to BaywindIVGOTFRNDSNLOWPLCS shown by Bev Drake.BOS was Ch. Northwind Stormy Night, shown by CindyBustic and BOB and Group 3 went to Veteran Ch. SinghYou Sinner of Talimer, shown by myself.
Saturday - Anne Sergio judged the LACGNYSweeps. Best In Sweeps went to Ja-Ma MystaDrivin'Ms. Daisy, owned and shown by Janet Whitman. There is not way I could possibly list all the people thatwere there - it was quite a turnout! Ms. Annie Rogers
14
Clark did the regular class judging. WB went to
Sharades Tropical Storm, shown by E. Wayne Baker.
WD was Raffles Porthos De Vallon, shown by Cindy
Butsic. BOS was Ch. Moha's Mahogany Moet. And
BOB was Cindy Butsic with Ch. Northwind Storm
Night. How many does this make, Cindy?! And a great
big thank you to Lorraine Mulleker for the wonderful
veggie dig after judging.Sunday, the Sweeps judge was Mr. Earl N.
Takahashi of Xeralane Kennels in Hawaii. They are
breeders of Shih Tzu and own one Lhasa. Best In Sweeps
went to Talimer Hi Tide Luna-Sea shown by myself.
For regular judging we had New York's own Cathy
DiGiacomo. WB went to Debbie Burke with Kaleko's
Steel Magnolia. WD was Talimer Hi Tide Luna-Sea,
BOS went to Jo Ann Germano with Ch. Prana's Soul
Dancer, and BOB was Ch. Anbara Alasara Smart Aleck,
shown by Debbie Burke. We were glad to see Bobbie
Wood could make it to see her dog win! And a very
special thank you to Debbie Burke who, as always,
helped numerous people with grooming amongst themany other things she was busy with. Like she doesn'thave anything better to do...
And last, but certainly not least, we all mourn
the passing of Pat Hufnail. I found out about her pass-
ing just before going into the ring Sunday in New York.
Pat has roomed with me numerous times in New York
and we always had a wonderful time. No matter what
was going on in Pat's life, she always had time to talk or
e-mail her friends. She had just finished with knee sur-
gery and was coming along so well. The Orlane List
will never be the same without her. She was always
there to congratulate, support, or just plain make fun of
anything and everything. I really felt the loss on Sun-day night when I got onto the computer to report the
day's activities. She was always one of the first I wroteto.

The Atlanta Kennel Club celebrated its 100thshow anniversary with a gala evening patterned after
Westminster, complete with evening groups, formal dress
and ring set up with placards for each breed. Prior to
group judging the club hosted a buffet for their mem-
bers and friends. It was a very special evening. At the
shows, Mrion Knowlton and Barbara Peterson finished
their puppy dogs and Barbara major pointed her bitch
puppy. Congratulations! It's becoming quite an ac-
complishment to find majors!Peggy Hufinan is on an extended trip in her
motorhome. She is taking her husband, Charlie, to his
fiftieth high school reunion. Then she will attend shows
with her special "Trooper", in North Carolina, go to the
newly revived Morris and Essex show in New Jersey
and then on to Maine for more shows before she comes
home to Ocala. "Trooper" collected two more breeds
and a Group III in Deland, where he could be shown
only twice, thanks to the Hurricane Gordon scare.Laura Wright and her family have a new house
in Mt. Dora and have been busy all summer doing the
things one always finds necessary when changing ad-
dresses. The house is delightful, but the thing that pleases
Laura most is the fenced yard with plenty of room for
people relaxation and a separate area that easily
accomodates an agility course. Her Lhasas, "Wirmifred"
and "Maggie" are having a marvelous time in agility
and her Border Collie, "Biz" simply wins anytime she's
entered. "Maggie" took an hiatus from showing for five
months, then pointed out at Perry and hopefully, will
find majors soon.I have nothing to show, but had a good time
stewarding in Deland, where Ruth Hayden's friend Robin
pointed her young dog. Pat Page did the same with her
dog and bitch. It was good to see Patty (Lotus) Marqueen
back in the ring on Sunday. She braved the Hurrican
Gordon warnings and pointed her puppy bitch. From
Deland I went on to visit friends in Jacksonville, North
Carolina and then on to Clayton, GA, where Susan, Tom
Holland and their three Lhasas have a home right on
top of Peachtree Mountain. What a marvelous setting!
Susan is "doing antiques" and is thoroughly enjoying
searching out new items for her shop.

President's Message
Hi Members,
It is with sadness that I report the loss of a friend and loyalALAC member, Pat Hufnail. It came as a shock as Pat wasat the National in California being just as involved with theactivities as always. She chaired the very successful Waysand Means committee at the National for many years. Shewas always willing to help ALAC or anyone with anythingthat needed to be done. Pat was on several interne LhasaApso lists and made sure that every message was answeredwhether a call for help or a win to be cheered.
I would like to remind everybody to read the committeereports. Our calendar year is changing. The National Spe-cialty will be held in October which will affect eligibilitydates for the futurity and the awards.
The Greater Milwaukee Lhasa Apso Club is busy makingplans for the 2001 National. Michele Billings will judgethe National and Marianne Nixon, San Jo Lhasa Apsos, will judge the regional specialty.
Local clubs — thank you for sending your newsletters—I ap-preciate receiving them and do read them with interest.
Judges education has been very active this fall. The LosAngeles Dog Judges Educational Association is offering twoseminars on the Lhasa Apso the weekend of October 13 to15th. Judy O'Dell and Bud Brockway are presenting ourprogram. The weekend ofNovember 10th to 12th the JudgesEducation Association of Washington will offer a doubleseminar on the Lhasa Apso in Seattle. With the help offrequent flyer miles, I will journey to Washington to presentthat seminar with Don and Naomi Hanson and Ann Lan-tennan. These seminar weekends are extremely well done.Multiple breeds are presented, one comes away havinglearned more than merely breed standards. Presentationsare made on general structure and the ability to evaluatedogs. These two educational seminar weekends are likemany across the country that are open not only to judges butto all who are interested. Taking advantage of education isone area in which we as breeders can always benefit.
My e-mail is always open to receive ideas and thoughts fromanyone who wants to share his ideas. I promise to answer. Ihope your holidays are filled with good things both doggyand human.
Till next time,
Bobbie [email protected]

Awards
This is a reminder for all of you who have new championsin conformation and obedience for the year 2000. Don't for-get to send a completed awards application form to BobbieWood and your photographs ( 1 per award) to me, Jan Bru-ton, along with $3.00 per photo. For those of you who maynot be familiar with the awards program, the photographsyou send of your award winners are put onto a video for allto enjoy at the National Awards Banquet. The minimal feePER photo goes toward the cost of renting the video projec-tor and screen as well as photo return. For the purpose ofthe video, 8x10 (original, not xerox) photos work the bestand we encourage candid photos. Respectfully submitted,Jan Bruton, 5406 SW Woods Ct., Portland, Or., 97221

The National has come and gone and I was pleased that I only hadto bring home one plaque that nobody picked up. I want to thankCarla Fegan for the wonderful job she did with the distributioneven though I gave her a numbered list that had every plaque offby one number. I still don't know how that happened but next yearI will make sure everything is accurate. Also the video created by that very talented team of Bruton andBruton was a smashing success again. That takes so much time tocreate and I'm really pleased they have made this a regular part ofthe National. And a big thank you to Pat Keen-Fernandes and
16
Midge Hylton for their generosity in producing our awards pro-gramIn view of the fact that our National Specialty next year is in Octo-ber I am going to change the date for awards forms to be submit-ted. I think August 1st will give us enough time to do the job. However that date is going to create a problem for some specialtyclubs. Therefore if your club holds a specialty after June 15th andyou do not have your plaque for the 2001 show please send therequest by April 1st and I will have those made and sent to you.But DO NOT FORGET TO APPLY FOR YOUR 2002 plaque byAugust 1st. We will then have all the specialties in sync with themajority of the awards. This is important so we do not have to payfor printer set-ups more than twice in the year. Don't forget to letme know if you require any corrections on this year's plaques. Ihave not heard from anybody so I am assuming that all was cor-rect. I wanted to let you know that sending me a copy of theChampionshipCertificate is a great idea. I get the correct spelling and the correctowner no matter who is applying for the award. Thank you all forgetting all your information in at the correct time.

Breed Rescue
The rescue committee continues to work with limited support fromthe Membership. In some large states we still have no active res-cuers from ALAC. These states include Georgia, Illinois, NewJersey, Ohio, South Carolina to name a few. I know we have mem-bers in these states. The brunt of the work continues to be done bya few. To add to the work the state of Florida has confiscated over50 Lhasas from an ALAC member and now they are in need ofhelp.. ALAC has donated monies to help with their care.

Judy O'Dell and Bud Brockway are doing the ALAC JEC presen-tation to the judges group in CA. Don Hanson and Ann Lantennanare doing the same ALAC approved JEC presentation to the judgesgroup in Seattle.

Breed Referral
Another holiday season is approaching. Requests forreferrals begin to pick up in October. Even if you don'thave puppies, please try to take the time to educate callersabout the distinct personality and unique training require-ments of our breed. Puppy buyers tend to find the breederreferral maze confusing; it is very helpful when memberslet me know that they have puppies for sale.

Thanks to all who participated in the 2000 ALAC Photo
Contest! Together, we raised over $200 to assist with Lhasa
rescue efforts nationwide. Contest winners in each category
were published in the last issue of The Bulletin. Now is the
time to begin planning your photos for next year's contest.
Thanks also to Brenda Peters of Casper, Wyoming, and also toBob Sharp, for their donations of numerous sets of old Lhasa
magazines to supplement the ALAC archives and for the raffle.
We also received a great 16 mm reel-to-reel tape from Nan
Damberg of a show held in Southern California in the 1970's
with over a hundred Lhasas entered. The Board agreed to
reimburse the cost of transferring this to videotape, so hopefully
we'll have that on display at the 2001 National, in addition to
the tapes of old Nationals.
Also, Leslie Bauman took footage of the first ever Lhasa Herding
Instinct test, held in conjunction with the National this year — a
historic moment indeed! That will also be available for viewing
next year. With the help of our members, we are slowing building
the ALAC archives with some meaningful additions to the collec-
tion. Remember to think of ALAC when cleaning your garage orclosets. Don't throw those old magazines away!
A reminder to all who are owners or breeders of the Top Twenty
18
Producers (dogs and bitches) to please send an 8x10 color photo,
pedigree and a one page typed bio to me for inclusion in an album I
am compiling for historical purposes. There is no cost to partici-
pants. Check the ALAC website at www.lhasaapso.org for a list
of the Top Twenty. If your dog is listed, I encourage you to partici-
pate.

Before You Even ConsiderShowing Your Dog
Before you even think about getting a dog, letalone training him, grooming him & getting all the equip-ment needed in order to show your dog, you MUST doone thing FIRST!
Go to the store and buy a handful of marbles.Take your dog and the marbles to a large field near yourhome. When you get there, put all the marbles you canpossibly fit into your mouth.
One at a time, spit the marbles as far as youcan. Your dog will get lots of exercise chasing themand have hours of fun trying to find them in the grass. One after another, spit out all the marbles until they areall gone.
When you have successfully lost all of yourmarbles, you are THEN ready to begin showing yourdog!

There once was a Lhasa named Spot,Who we wondered.. .was he a Lhasa or not?
His colors were all mingled,He looked like shake shingles,

the"From the center of the ring" is a new feature that will be included going forward. The plan is to have
from one to three judges, per issue, responding to a set group of questions. Please let us know how you
like this and other new features that have been included in the Bulletin.Dana Read, Features Editor
With Mrs. Robert S. Forsyth
LA - As a matter of background information, how
did you get started in the sport of dogs and what
was your first breed(s)? Would you like to share
with us a few of the highlights of your career in
dogs, either as a breeder/exhibitor or as a judge?
JF - 62 years ago I got my first Best Obedience
dog in show with my home bred Airedale. Then in
the early 50 years was the Top boxer breeder in the
country for three years. for 44 years was an all breed
handler show up to 35 dogs a show for 125 showsa year.
LA - When did you begin to judge the Lhasa and
what makes this breed enjoyable for you to judge?
Started judging Lhasa in the late '80's and enjoy
the breed as I showed quite a few also.
LA - Which group is your favorite to officiate and
why?
Non-Sporting as it is so diversified.
LA - What, in your opinion, is the essence of the
Lhasa?
JF - Good toplines and good side action.
LA - What singular trait do you admire most about
the Lhasa Apso in general?
JF - Their way of covering ground.
LA - As the years go by, in what areas have you
noted significant improvements and in what areas
do you still see a need for improvement?
JF - Improved in size and balance and still need to
improve fronts and mouths.
LA - Do you have any "pet peeves" with regards
to how the Lhasa is handled? Is there anything
regarding handling that you simply will not toler-
ate in your ring, regardless of breed?
JF - People who feed dogs liver as you are about to
look at their mouths.
LA - How important is showmanship/attitude in
your final decision?
JF - the are supposed to be show dogs so it is quite
important.
LA - Are there any final comments you would like
to add?
JF - Keep working on a lovely breed.

LA - As a matter of background information, howdid you get started in the sport of dogs and whatwas your first breed(s)? Would you like to sharewith us a few of the highlights of your career indogs, either as a breeder/exhibitor or as a judge?
PL - I started in dogs in June 1945 when I pur-chased a Collie puppy and started training in obe-dience. I have owned, exhibited or bred a dozenbreeds with the most success being in Pointers,Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles. There have beenmany highlights, but the firsts are always thestandouts. First Best of Breed, first Group, firstBest in Show and first point show judging assign-ment.
LA - When did you begin to judge the Lhasa andwhat makes this breed enjoyable for you to judge?
PL - I first judged the Lhasa at sanctioned matcheswhen they were first recognized and I was approvedfor point shows in 1980.
LA - Which group is your favorite to officiate andwhy?
PL - This may sound condescending but the Non-Sporting Group. It was my first approved groupand the group that I had showed and worked in themost.
LA - What, in your opinion, is the essence of theLhasa?
PL - The elegant outline of a good one both stand-ing and moving. A good handler helps but the ani-mal has to be able to stand and carry itself in thismanner.
LA - What singular trait do you admire most about
the Lhasa Apso in general?
PL - See the answer to the previous question. It'sthat picture of aloofness that even a mediocre onecan create.
LA - As the years go by, in what areas have younoted significant improvements and in what areasdo you still see a need for improvement?
PL - With regards to significant improvement, Iwould have to say that conditioning and presenta-tion are the first things that come to mind. Sound-ness needs to be improved as there are still too manybad fronts and hindquarters. Coat covers a multi-tude of sins, but they are still there.
LA - Do you have any pet peeves" with regardsto how the Lhasa is handled? Is there anythingregarding handling that you simply will not toler-ate in your ring, regardless of breed?
PL - I hate to stand there waiting to examine a dogwhile the handler regrooms the animal, but what Ihate even more is to see a Lhasa being picked upby it's chin and tail. Absolutely unnecessary!
LA - How important is showmanship/attitude inyour final decision?
PL - Showmanship plays a role (no dragging tails)but not a major one. Attitude on the other hand isoften the difference between a good dog and a topwinner.
LA - Are there any final comments you would liketo add?
PL -If size is not better controlled, they will nolonger look like Lhasas. The standard calls for 10to 11 inches with bitches slightly smaller. I keepseeing many cases where even the bitches are 11 ormore inches.

"I see that the "Smiths" have entered their dog inthe Veterans Class. Apparently there is no one inthis Club who knows that it is customary to offera round of applause for those that are entered.
Six months ago, at this same show, Ientered my Veteran Dog in this same class. Not one person applauded. Not one personcame up and said anything. Not one personcame over to give him a kind word or a pat. Notone person made him feel he belonged again. He was no threat to anyone. He wasn't going tobeat anyone, take any points, or win anything. He was just an old dog who thought he wasspecial again - back in the ring for the first timein many years. Maybe he even recalled his"Glory Days".
He would have loved to have met any-one there. He would have welcomed you like anold friend. You didn't have to say anything niceabout him if you didn't want to. But just in caseyou can't think of anything to say about aVeteran Dog, here are some suggestions: "Itwas nice to see him out there". Or go up to himand tell him he's a "Good Boy". Or tell hisowner that you are glad that they brought him. Those aren't exactly compliments, but they willplease his owner and make him glad that theybrought him. I don't think that's asking toomuch.
One day, all too soon, all your beautifulyoung dogs will be old dogs too. Maybe oneday you'll enter them in a Veterans Class. And Ihope that you do. Or, like many of us, youremember that old friend, now gone, and wishyou still had the chance. They deserve it. It maybe their final time in the sun - their last time outin front of people. Their last time to ever be inthe ring.
My old dog is a Fool. He thought he waswonderful that day. He thought he belonged.Instead, he was ignored. I have thought aboutthis for 6 months now, and wasn't going to sayanything. But on his behalf, and that of anyother Veteran, I hope that something like thisnever occurs again. As a Club of (Breed)Fanciers, you should feel ashamed. Even if youdislike the dog or his owner, at least show Good
Sportsmanship and do the Right Thing. Showothers that you have respect for your breed.Make that Veteran Dog feel wanted and specialagain. Let him know that you are glad to seehim. It will make his day. You may never get thechance again. Thank you."
As Lynda began reading it, the hush thatfell over the room was incredible. Bless herheart, my friend Lynda broke into tears as shestruggled through reading this. EVERYONE inthe room lowered their heads, and many ofthem began to cry also, including the President(who is a man). I tried my best to hold my headup and refrain from tears, again.
The President strode over to where Iwas sitting and in a broken voice said"Terry I am SO sorry. He is such a wonder-ful dog. There is no excuse for what happenedto you. And to him."
As I started to say that I "wasn't going tosay anything" again, the room nearly burst witheveryone trying to talk at once. The discussionthat followed was both eye-opening and ofvaluable purpose. Many came up to me intears, with hugs and apologies. I am a veryprivate and shy person, not given to sharing mydeepest feelings easily. This had been anincredibly difficult thing for me to do, but inhonor of my Veteran and all the others outthere, I felt it must be done. Was it worth it?When *Mr. Smith* took his lovely 12 1/2 yearold dog (neutered due to testicular cancer) intothe ring, our entire membership remained - andapplauded and "whooped and hollered" himwith every move. The Judge moved to thecenter of the ring on his final go round andapplauded, as did her ring stewards. Othersnearby, watching other breeds, came over andremarked on how wonderful it was to see aVeteran being treated like that. Many (includingme) asked to take his picture. Everyonecomplimented him and his owners. If only myold dog had enjoyed such a day... Was it worthit? You tell me...

To stop a heart attack when alone:
Let's say it's 6:17 p.m. and you're drivinghome (alone of course) after an unusuallylong day, you start experiencing severe painin your chest that starts to radiate out into yourarm and up into your jaw. You are only aboutfive miles from the hospital nearest yourhome, unfortunately you don't know if you'll beable to make it that far.
What can you do? You've been trained inCPR but the guy that taught the courseneglected to tell you how to perform it onyourself...
HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACKWHEN ALONE
Many people are alone when they suffer aheart attack, what can you do?Without help a person whose heart stopsbeating properly begins to feel faint and hasabout 10 seconds left before losingconsciousness. However, these victims canhelp themselves by coughing repeatedlyand very vigorously. A deep breath shouldbe taken before each cough, and the coughmust be deep and prolonged, as whenproducing sputum from deep inside thechest.
A breath and a cough must be repeatedabout every two seconds without let up untilhelp arrives, or until the heart is felt to be
beating normally again. Deep breaths getoxygen into the lungs and coughing move-ments squeeze the heart and keep theblood circulating. The squeezing pressureon the heart also helps it regain normalrhythm. In this way, heart attack victims canget to a phone and, between breaths, call forhelp.
You'll be giving yourself CPR with thistechnique. Tell as many other people aspossible about this, it could save their life!

ALAC Code of EthicsPreamble
"The American Lhasa Apso Club is an organization devoted to the pres-ervation and welfare of the Lhasa Apso Breed. The Lhasa Apso is theresult of centuries of Asian culture, and as such deserves to be honoredand protected for its historical and esthetic merit as well as its modemuse as a companion. To this end, the American Lhasa Apso Club hasdefined a standard of excellence for the breed, and sponsors exhibitionsfor the comparison and improvement of the breeding population and forthe education of our breeders. Our goal is to produce an animal which istutiform in type and sound of mind and body, and suited to its originalpurpose as a small indoor guard dog and companion to man.Dedicated breeders of the Lhasa Apso are distinguished from those whoexploit the breed solely for profit by their adherence to a set of ethicalprinciples. The welfare of each individual Lhasa Apso, and the welfareof the entire breed, governs our behavior in all aspects of breeding, ex-hibiting and selling. The American Lhasa Apso Club endorses the fol-lowing as the ethical standard of all true lovers of the breed."
Breeding1. Members contemplating breeding a litter, or who allow the useof their stud dog to the same end, should direct their efforts towardproducing Lhasa Apsos of exceptional quality. Each mating shouldideally be planned with the intention of improvement yet preserva-tion of the breed. Breedings should be done with the ultimate goalof achieving excellence according to the Breed standard. Type, tem-perament, health and conformation of both sire and dam should becarefully considered in the planning of any breeding in order toaccomplish the goals of preservation and improvement. This pre-supposes a careful study of the breed standard, pedigree, and ge-netics.2. No Lhasa Apso showing a serious inherited defect in type, struc-ture or temperament should be used for breeding. Bitches shouldbe bred only when in prime breeding condition, fully mature andin robust health mentally and physically. Ideally, no bitch shouldbe bred prior to twelve months of age and not more than two out ofthree seasons.
Owners of stud dogs should not accept for breeding any bitch that showsa serious inherited defect in type, structure, or temperament, the repro-duction of which is likely to be detrimental to the breed. It is ideal if allstud contracts include an agreement, to be signed by the owner of thebitch, that no puppies resulting from the mating will be wholesaled orsold to pet shops, a practice the Club considers grossly detrimental tothe Lhasa Apso breed. Stud owners should strongly encourage the own-ers of the bitches that any pet quality puppies from the resulting litter besold on spay/neuter contracts. Breeding Lhasa Apso litters for "petsonly" is considered detrimental to the long-term welfare of the breed.Members should refrain from this practice and should refuse stud ser-vice to owners of bitches for whom this is the goal.If a dog or bitch has produced any offspring with serious inherited de-fects detrimental to the animal's well-being and produces like resultswith a different mating partner, it would be in the best interest of thebreed that the owner refrain from further use of this animal for breed-ing.
Kennel Management3. Ethical breeders should be financially and situationally capableof providing for the special health and nutritional needs of broodbitches and their litters before doing a breeding. Members plan-ning a breeding should consider the local market and the possiblenecessity of caring for puppies for several months until sold. Pup-pies should be sold in a clean and healthy condition and should beat least eight weeks or older to make the necessary adjustment to anew home safely. No adult or puppy should be sold without ad-equate protection against disease.Members are encouraged to maintain the best possible standards
of canine health, sanitary kennel conditions, and veterinary care, including mental health (such as contact with people and exposureto the outside world).4. Members known to have deliberately violated American KennelClub rules regarding registration and showing of dogs should ex-pect the consequences of being reported.Sales5. Ethical breeders should be discriminating in the placement oftheir Lhasa Apsos. The Club does not consider ethical any of thefollowing practices: the consignment or sale outright to pet shops, catalogue houses, animal brokers, or other commercial sources ofdistribution; and the donation of Lhasa Apsos as prizes for raffles, auctions, or contests; the wholesaling of Lhasa Apso litters or theover-breeding of their own bitches for profit, with no regard forquality. Sales to persons known or suspected of such practices isconsidered detrimental to the breed.6. According to American Kennel Club rules, breeders should fur-nish the signed American Kennel Club registration or transfer witheach puppy sold unless a written agreement is made with the pur-chaser at the time of sale that papers will be withheld. The Clubstrongly supports the practice of accompanying the sale of all pup-pies or adults determined pet quality with a spay/neuter contractand written agreement that no AKC registration papers will betransferred until the seller has received veterinary certification thatsurgery has been performed.7. Ideally, breeders should provide a three-generation pedigree, instructions on care including grooming, feeding, and completehealth care. Lhasa Apsos released should be in good health to thebest of the breeder's knowledge. Breeders dedicated to the LhasaApso fancy should be available to their buyers for consultation, even after completion of a sale. Breeders should try to assist theserious novice in his understanding of the breed.8. It would best serve the breed that any Lhasa Apso puppy oradult, which might be considered to have a serious hereditary de-fect or a serious deviation from the standard, be sold without pa-pers and spayed/neutered (this should be clearly understood byboth the buyer and the breeder and a written agreement to thiseffect signed by both parties), or humanely destroyed.Advertising9. The value and quality of the Lhasa Apso should be upheld inboth advertising and selling. Advertising should not to be wordedso as to attract undesirable buyers or to encourage raising dogs forprofit. Ethical breeders would not engage in false or misleadingadvertising or otherwise misrepresent their Lhasa Apsos; nor wouldthey malign their competitors by making false or misleading state-ments regarding their competitors' Lhasas, breeding practices, orperson.Written Agreements and Health Guarantees10. Members are encouraged to utilize and maintain signed copiesof written agreements detailing price, description of dog, guaran-tees, condition and understanding for all transactions involvingtheir dogs. These include co-ownership agreements; sales of pet, companion, or show Lhasa Apsos; stud agreements; brood matronleases; and any other transaction involving transfer or utilizationof a Lhasa Apso. Copies of such records could be used, when ap-propriate, by the Club Board in hearing any grievance involvingan ethics complaint against a member.
The sale of all puppies and adults are best accompanied by a writtenhealth guarantee. Should a show or breeding prospect develop a seriouscongenital, hereditary, or disqualifying defect after sale, breeders could:(1) replace the dog with one of equivalent value believed to be free ofsuch defect, or(2) refund the sale price upon return of the dog, or(3) refund the difference between the price paid and the price of a petsold from the same or similar litters, allowing the buyer to retain the
dog.

"Olde Yorkshire Dog Poem"(origin unknown)
The dogs all had a meeting,
They came from near and far,
Some came by public transport,
While others came by car.
But before they were allowed,
To enter in the hall,
Each had to hang its bottom,
On a hook upon the wall.
They all got nicely seated,
Each mother's son and sire,
When a dirty little yellow dog,
Began to holler "FIRE".
They all jumped up together,They had no time to look,
And each one grabbed at random,
A bottom from the hook.
This got their bottoms all mixed up,And made them very sore,To wear another bottom,They hadn't worn before.
And that's the reason why a dog,Will even leave a bone,To smell another bottom,In hopes to find his own.
