Head added, AShe is travelling to America onSaturday--it takes 12 hours--she ships to Louisville orLexington with a stop at Stansted to put the Englishhorses on the plane. She is a very good traveler anddoes not sweat much. We had a very bad draw lastyear--we had ridden from the front in the Prix de laForet and got beat and so I told Olivier [Peslier] to waita bit with her--he was a bit further back than wewanted, but that is the way races turn out. This yearwe led again in the Prix de la Foret, but she did notfight with him--that was the big difference. She is veryfast--she loves the speed. There is no doubt that is whyshe is so brilliant in the States, because they start fastwhich we do not do here--the stalls open and every-body stops and holds back. The faster they go, thebetter she is, and firm ground is good for her. Her lastgood work will be on Thursday with Olivier, but shedoes not need much--she is very forward in her prepara-tion. She will then just tick over in America. She isextraordinary. For a trainer to have a horse like her isunbelievable. I don't think I will train a better horse--sheis very special. She is a dream to train--you can dowhatever you want with a horse like that. It is a bitstressful to train her sometimes but, touch wood, shehas been very, very easy. She has never had anythingwrong and has been very sound. There is a bit of pres-sure, but I am relaxed. Things are going well at themoment. It is a bit special trying to win three Breeders'Cup races. It would be great to happen. I have beenlucky enough to both ride and train winners at theBreeders' Cup."

Koriner’s Californians Work Under Twin Spires Defending BC Turf Sprint hero California Flag (Avenueof Flags) breezed five panels in 1:00.80 over the Louis-ville lawn yesterday. AThat was fine,@ said trainer Brian

Koriner. AWe will train himlight this week, and maybeblow him out three-eighthsnext Monday.@ The Hi CardRanch homebred is comingoff a desultory last-of-11 fin-ish in the GIII Woodford S. atKeeneland Oct. 9. AIt was de-pressing to watch,@ Korineradmitted. AHe ran to the topof the lane and then slowed

down. But I have had assistants to Bobby Frankel andNeil Drysdale tell me their horses would get on thatsandy turf at Keeneland and not try, but they wouldcome over here and return to form.@ The grey wasattired with front bandages in his Lexington appear-ance. AHe had hit himself before the race and we putthe bandages on him and maybe he thought he wasjust going to work,@ Koriner offered. AI=ll tell you onething; he won=t have bandages on Breeders= Cup day.@

Stablemate Sweet August Moon (Malibu Moon) tunedup for the GI BC F/M Sprint with a five-furlong drill in1:00.80 over Churchill=s main track. Her splits were:12.20, :24.20 and :35.80 before galloping out sixfurlongs in 1:15. AShe got a little tired, but this was thefirst time she has worked on dirt,@ Koriner said. AIt wasfine and I will probably come back with her next Mon-day for three-eighths.@ Victor Espinoza has the callaboard both of Koriner=s runners.

Dubai Majesty Drills on Churchill Grass Dubai Majesty (Essence of Dubai), prepping for the GI BC F/M Sprint on dirt, recorded:49.80 for her half-mile breeze on theMatt Winn Turf Course yesterday. AIam not sure if [trainer] Bret [Calhoun]has done this in the past before a dirtrace,@ said Dennis APeaches@ Geier,Calhoun=s assistant at ChurchillDowns. ABut the turf is a lot easier onher.@ The five-year-old, who has twicewon the GIII Winning Colors S. atChurchill, is coming off a victory overdefending champion Informed Deci-sion (Monarchos) in the GII Thorough-bred Club of America S. at KeenelandOct. 9.

Midge Has Meehan Excited Brian Meehan was yesterday relishing saddling Dan-gerous Midge (Lion Heart) against Workforce (GB)(King's Best) and company in the GI Breeders' Cup Turfnext Saturday. Iraj Parvizi's G3 Newbury Arc Trial win-ner received glowing praise from his Manton-basedtrainer. "He was impressive at Newbury and he's comeon a lot since,@ Meehan said. AHe's a horse that is im-proving, has had lots of time and has the perfect profilefor the race. He's got lots of speed, travels and quick-ens and I think the track will suit him." Meehan also plans to run Andrew Rosen's G3 Pres-tige S. winner and G1 Fillies' Mile third Theyskens'Theory (Bernardini) in the GI BC Juvenile Fillies.

"Theyskens' Theory has beenentered in the turf and the dirtrace, but I think she's morelikely to go for the Juvenile onthe dirt,@ Meehan explained.AShe's really well and, althoughwe were tempted to go for the G2 Rockfel S. [at NewmarketOct. 16], this made more sense. She's bred for it, and I think it

will really suit her." The bay filly is a half-sister to 2005GI BC Juvenile hero Stevie Wonderboy (Stephen GotEven).

Frontieres Ruled Out of Turf Sir Robert Ogden's G1 Irish St Leger winner SansFrontieres (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will not run in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf, trainer Jeremy Noseda an-nounced yesterday. Bound for theG1 Melbourne Cup initially beforesuffering a setback, the four-year-oldhad been under consideration for adiversion to Churchill Downs, butthat was also ruled out. "SansFrontieres suffered a setback inquarantine, so it has been decided tofinish him for the year," Nosedacommented. "I have been delightedwith his performances this year, winning three groupraces which culminated in the Irish St Leger. I do feelthat he can improve again next year and it will be greatto have him around."

Newmarket last night whenrealising 220,000gns as theresult of an internationalbidding battle. Cat Juniorhas been second in threeGroup 2 events this seasonfor trainer Brian Meehan, most recently in the G2Challenge S. at Newmarket, and looks set to head off toa sunnier climate. Badr AlHajri, who had travelledfrom Saudi Arabia purely to

buy Cat Junior, struck the successful bid. Nils PetterGill, a Norwegian owner who runs many of the coun-try=s Subaru dealerships, tried hard for the five-year-old,but the underbidder was Iran-based owner Farid Borbar. "I=ve bought him for Prince Sultan bin Mishel binAbdulaziz,@ said Al Hajri. AI=d seen him run in Dubai andthat=s why I came over for him. He=s a good-lookinghorse with speed, and will hopefully run at the Carnivalagain and could race over 1,200 metres. He could alsobe a stallion eventually."

It was a busy day for those shopping for the DubaiCarnival, with Anthony Stroud and David Loder, whosepurchases are expected to race for members of theMaktoum family, much in evidence. Jump trainer Donald McCain was underbidderon the four-year-old. "He missed a lot of the season after pulling a muscle, but has put in two reasonable performances since then.He could be more a [G1] Cox Plate than a [G1] Mel-bourne Cup horse, and is going to be trained by mybrother Mike," confirmed Moroney. Moroney later paid155,000gns for the three-year-old Kaptain Kirkup (Ire)(Captain Rio {GB}), offered by trainer Michael Dods forowner Kevin Kirkup. "This one=s likely to go to our stable in New Zealand, where there is a dearth of good sprinters, so he couldbe competitive in Group 1s there," added Moroney.Agent Guy Mulcaster, acting for Sydney trainer ChrisWaller, successfully bid 190,000gns for the two-year-old Marden (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), a recent maidenwinner for the Sangster family. ROSANARA Rosanara (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}--Rosawa {Fr}, by Linamix

{Fr}), winner of last year's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, has

been retired after finishing fourth in yesterday's G3 Prix

de Flore at Saint-Cloud. Only fourth there, His Highness

The Aga Khan's grey, who was also third in the 2009

G1 Criterium International and runner-up in this year's

G1 Prix de Diane, was the winner of two of her eight

starts and over i450,000 in prizemoney. "Rosanara

has had a long season and is tired, which she showed

today--the filly will now go to stud," trainer Alain de

Royer-Dupre told Racing Post. "She was unlucky this

season, especially [when fifth before being promoted to

fourth] in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and, un-

fortunately, never quite achieved the results we had

hoped for this year."

WORLD TOP 30(North America & Europe) Each year there are between 1,000-1,100 sires inNorth America, Europe, and Japan who are assignedAPEX ratings. In order to qualify, a sire must have 10or more three-year-old foals in the last racing year tabu-lated; in other words, in 2010 a sire must have had 10or more foals of 2007. Somewhere between 600 and700 of these sires will have had 200 or more >year-starters= (a horse counted as one runner each year itran) in the previous seven years. So, when we last ranthe data, on Aug. 1, it covered racing from Jan. 1,2004 to Aug. 1, 2010. When we talk about a >World Top 12=, therefore--given that we do know we=re really only talking aboutNorth American and European sires on the world=snumber one international circuit--we are essentiallysaying, these are the top two percent of sires. Whenwe say >World Top 30,= practically speaking it is the topfive percent of sires. I don=t mean to diss the topSouthern Hemisphere and Japanese sires, but theyaren=t really on this number one international circuit, so,practically speaking, the >World Top 30= is the top fivepercent of available proven sires in North America andEurope with foals three years old and up. You=ll see in the attached table (see p11) that we=veincluded two APEX-based statistics on the sires listed. The APEX A Index, which is the more familiar statistic,is an improved cumulative average-earnings index cov-ering the last seven years. Translated, it means A.P.Indy sired 9.76 percent top-two-percent earners in themajor racing countries covered; Galileo sired 7.50 per-cent top-two-percent earners; Dynaformer, 5.32 per-cent; Elusive Quality and Invincible Spirit 3.62 percent(you double the index figure to get the percentage of ARunners to year-starters). The second figure is thecareer percentage of >unique= A Runners (counted onlyonce) to named foals of racing age. So, since his firstfoals raced in 1996, 14.15 percent of the named foalsof racing age by A.P. Indy became A Runners in at leastone year. That=s an astronomical percentage. As youcan see, most younger sires from the >Big-Book Era=have considerably lower percentages. A Runnersroughly equate to listed winners and above. A fewyears ago, if you=ll remember, our research indicated>six percent is the new 10 percent,= and six percent isthe yardstick I use now for this category, >percentageof unique A Runners from named foals of racing age.=

Cont. p9

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 10/27/10 • PAGE 9 of 11 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

But, as I said last week when discussing the latestversion of the World Top 12, there is no hard-and-fastcorrelation between either of those APEX numbers andwhich list, if either, a sire is selected for. I will note thatall of the current World Top 12 have A Runner indicesabove 2.50, and, with a couple of exceptions, theirpercentage of unique A Runners to foals is above sevenpercent. The two exceptions are Coolmore siresDanehill Dancer (6.77 percent with huge crops startingwith impossible mares--this is a lifetime statistic, re-member) and Montjeu (6.63 percent, but with a severecolt bias). Obviously those numbers don=t guaranteeyou a spot among the World Top 12, but you just aboutcan=t get there without them. They are what are called>necessary, but not sufficient= conditions for inclusion. As you=ll see from my (admittedly subjective) table, the first four Kentucky sires I=ve listed in the >WorldNext 18= portion of the table all do have A indexes of2.50-plus, and all have eight percent-plus unique ARunners from foals. I can=t really explain the voodoowhich tells me where a sire really rates, but there mustbe hundreds of industry professionals who are compil-ing similar lists, using their own voodoo. As noted lastweek, I now think the balance of power among theworld top 12 has shifted from North America (now fiveof the top 12) to Europe (now seven). But in the sec-ond tier, I counted 12 Kentucky sires, against five fromEurope. Oh yes, that means one slot is open for readerinput. There are 30 slots in the World Top 30, and Ihave only filled 29 of them. Who else deserves to be in(and no, you can=t kick out some of mine to make moreroom--just one opening for now)? It=s also interesting that the two F2005 sires (firstfoals now five-year-olds) are both European, top 12 sireOasis Dream and top 30 sire Dalakhani. Then the fourtop F2006 sires (first foals now four-year-olds), all Top30 sires at the moment, are all North American:Medaglia d=Oro, Speightstown, Tapit, and Candy Ride;and the two F2007 sires (first three-year-olds; rarely aresires from this category included in these lists), bothDarley European sires, are: newest world top 12 sireDubawi, and newest world top 30 sire Shamardal.Interesting, too, that Coolmore (Galileo, Montjeu,Danehill Dancer, Giant=s Causeway) leads Darley (StreetCry, Dubawi) four to two among the World Top 12, butin the remainder of the World Top 30, there are fourDarley sires (Elusive Quality, Medaglia d=Oro, CapeCross, and Shamardal), but none for Coolmore. Darleydoes also own >legs,= too, of top 12 sires DistortedHumor and Pivotal, and top 30 sire Invincible Spirit.

“Arqana revamped its October Yearling Sale to create a two-day ‘OctoberPart 1’, followed by a Part 2 which included some jumping-bred yearlings. The new format worked, since turnover increased by 22 percent. Thoughtheir premier August yearling sale was down, Arqana remains one of theEuropean industry’s biggest success stories. The OBS Mixed Sale inOcala was up from last year, due to better pedigrees, but it is still ashadow of its former self. The season’s overall theme continues: nosignificant further drops.”

The specific composition of the world top 12, or theworld top 30, is of course open to discussion and dis-agreement. But the whole discussion does raise again,at least in my mind, the question of what is going tohappen to stud fees. Already we=ve seen the Irish Na-tional Stud=s John Osborne unapologetically announcethat Invincible Spirit will be going up, to i60,000 fromi45,000, not down. I fear breeders who dig their heelsin and refuse to patronize sires whose stud fees don=tdrop significantly are going to be cutting off their nosesto spite their faces. It really does come back to supplyand demand--that, and an appreciation of class. Breed-ers know who the top sires are-Bsome version of mytop 30 table--and those are the horses they are stillgoing to be clamoring to breed to. No doubt there isgoing to be fantastic value further down the scale, andfor unproven stallions, but I=d be surprised to see any ofthese top 30 cut by more than a third. Some will be:$50,000 is going to be plenty to breed to some sireswho now stand for more; so will $75,000 be plenty fora few more. There could be, and should be, significantreductions among a few of these, but not that many, and plenty of others among this top 30 will stay thesame or even go up, like Invincible Spirit. Breedinghorses is, as I=m sure you=ve noticed, an extremelycompetitive, high-stakes pursuit in which an impressivecorps of bright, clever, highly trained professionals (yes, that=s you, dear reader) are forming opinions and actingon them. As a stallion manager, if you have one of the30 or so stallions that a lot of people want, the supplyand demand equation is in your favor. If not, yeah, that=s probably a stud fee that=s going to fall.

AROUND THE WORLD

SMARTY JONES TO GHOST RIDGE ChampionSmarty Jones (Elusive Quality--I=ll Get Along, by Smile),who came so close to capturing the 2004 Triple Crown, will relocate to Ghost Ridge Farm in York, Pennsylvania,

for the 2011 breeding season. The nine-year-old stallion stoodthis past spring at Three Chim-neys. ASmarty Jones= racing abil-ity was the result of his remark-able good looks, balance and ath-leticism,@ said Three Chimneys=Robert Clay, adding, ASmartyJones, in recent weeks, has pro-

duced several winners nationwide, including Grade IIIwinner Rogue Romance. He has a huge base of supportfrom breeders, owners and fans on the East Coast, especially in Pennsylvania, and his progeny have provenquite profitable in that region. The goal in relocatinghim was to bring him closer to his primary base of maresupport, giving him the best chance for greater successat stud.@ In winning eight of his nine career starts--including the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S.--Smarty Jones bankrolled $7,613,155 for hisowner/breeders, Patricia and Roy Chapman. AWhen Royand I made the decision to stand Smarty at Three Chim-neys, it was because of their dedication to doing what-ever is in the best interest of each horse, and theirattention to the fans and general public," said PatriciaChapman. AThey have gone above and beyond in mak-ing Smarty accessible to the public, and have beentrusted advisors to my family and me throughout hiscareer at stud. We've had many discussions over thepast year about what is in Smarty's best interest, and Iam thankful for the Clays= support in my decision tobring Smarty Jones back to his home state of Pennsyl-vania to stand at Ghost Ridge.@ Carl McEntee, GhostRidge=s general manager, added, "Smarty Jones is oneof the most recognizable names in the industry. We arehonored and privileged to offer the breeders of theMidatlantic region a stallion of this caliber." ThreeChimneys will host an open house Nov. 3 from 10a.m.-1 p.m. to allow the stallion=s fans to bid him adieu.

HARD SPUN FILLY TOPS FASIG-TIPTON TUESDAY Tuesday's second session of the Fasig-Tipton Ken-tucky Fall Yearlings Sale got off to a quick start, withthe eventual topper making herself known by lunch-time. That was hip 458, a daugh-ter of champion and GI Breeders'Cup Distaff heroine HollywoodWildcat (Kris S.) from the firstcrop of Hard Spun (Danzig), whowent for $310,000. Lakland Farmwas the winning bidder for the3/4-sister to another Breeders'Cup winner in GI Mile hero WarChant (Danzig). The filly hailedfrom the dispersal of Irving Cowan--who campaignedboth Hollywood Wildcat and War Chant--which is beinghandled by Taylor Made Sales Agency. The filly, namedFavorite Gal, is also a 3/4-sister to Group 2 winner IvanDenisovich (Ire) (Danehill), and is a half to SW & MGSPMinisters Wild Cat (Deputy Minister), SW Double Cat(Storm Cat), and MGSP Shintoh (Giant's Causeway). The top-priced colt came near the end of the day, whentrainer Mark Casse offered a winning bid of $170,000for hip 761, a son of Tiznow consigned by Four StarSales, agent.
