Breathe - the Vital Life Force

    Ezekiel 37: 5, 6, 9-11 & 14

God, the Master told the dry bones, Watch this: Im bringing the breath of

life to you and youll come to life. Ill attach sinews to you, put meat on your

bones, cover you with skin, and breathe life into you. Youll come alive and

youll realize that I am God.

Come breath. Breathe on these slain bodies. Breath life!

The Breath entered them and they came alive! They stood up on their feet, a

    huge army.

Ill breathe my Life into you and youll live.

    The Five Vayus

Our Life Force is expressed through Prana (Breath) and divides itself into five

Vayus, each governing different functions and aspects of energy within the

    depth of our existence.

    Vayu Area of Body Function

Prana Chest, head Governs intake, inspiration, propulsion,

    forward momentum

Apana Pelvis Governs elimination, downward and

    outward momentum

    Samana Naval Governs assimilation, discernment,

    inner absorption, consolidation

Udana Throat Governs growth, speech, expression,

    ascension, upward movement

PRANAVAYU the energy force which initiates active life is said to pervade the body in5 ways. The word VAYU is comparable to nerve current, or impulse, and is also thegroup term for Prana. The 5 VAYUS govern the autonomic functions of the bodythrough their controlling effect on the Autonomic Nervous System.

    THE 5 VAYUS ARE

    1. PRANA which circulates above the waist, governing respiration and the action ofthe voice through the cervical portion of the Autonomic N.S. It flows naturally inan upward direction.

    2. APANA circulates below the waist into the lower abdomen and governs theorgans of excretion and reproduction through the lumber portion of theAutonomic N.S. The natural flow is downward.

3.SAMANA governs the organs of digestion through the thoracic region of theAutonomic N.S.

    4. UDANA governs the vocal chords and speech mechanism through the cephalicdivisions of the Autonomic N.S. This VAYU is said to be responsible for theseparation of the subtle body from the physical at the time of death. It alsoenables thoughts to be expressed, regulates the air supply and regulates thetension of the vocal chords.

    5. VYANA said to permeate the whole body and govern the blood and lymphaticcirculatory system and control muscle activity. VYANA also helps to keep the

body upright by generating unconscious reflexes along the spine. Said also togovern the flow of the nervous system.

During PRANAYAMA, pranavayu is generated during inhalation and apanavayu duringexhalation. Certain PRANAYAMA techniques practiced with MUDRAS and BANDHAScause a reversal to the normal upward flow ofpranavayu and the downward flow ofapanavayu. This in turn causes them to join at the solar plexus chakra (Manipura)where great heat may be generated and directed down to the base of the spine, theresting place of the Kundalini Shakti.

It is said that the heat generated is so great that Kundalini awakens, causing raw pranic

energy to flow quickly through the SUSHUMNA. Each chakra awakens during thisprocess, the aim being to carry the Prana up to the highest chakra SAHASRARA andthen uniting negative (Shakti) and positive (Shiva) conscious energy.

NAGA Governs belchingKURMA Governs eyelid movementKRIKARA Governs hunger, thirst and sneezing

DEVADATTA Governs yawning and hiccoughingDHANANJAYA Governs spasms said to remain with the body even after death

    PRANA ABSORBING ORGANS

SKIN: Largest body organ which eliminates through its pores and absorbs solarenergy (consider the sun and the air upon the skin)

TONGUE: You are what you eat we are condensed sunlight! Yogis link Pranawith taste it manifests as flavour. It is said that one should chew ones food untilthe flavour has gone.

NOSE: is your main Prana absorbing organ. 18 inhalations of 1 litre of air perminute = 13,000 in 24 hours. Compare this to water intake 2 litres? And foodintake 1 kilo solid food! Nasal cavities have sensitive nerve receptors which areconnected to centres in the brain and these produce deep and immediatereactions.
