Figure 3: Pain and swelling the breast

Figure 4: Pain in Right breast; lump upper inter quadrant

    Type 2: Fibroadenoma

In the case of Fibroadenoma there is a high temperature region (ROI), the hot spot butthere is no temperature distribution around that high temperature region alone. The next

highest temperature is spread everywhere and is symmetric not surrounding the hot spot

    alone.

    2. ALGORITHM DEVELOPMENT:

    Step 1:

The hot spot i.e the highest temperature region is to be first isolated.

    Step 2:

Check if it is symmetrical (appears on both sides) and uniform.

Step 2 a: If yes then it indicates no abnormality i.e. normal and stop the analysis

Step 2 b: Else then possibility of abnormality and hence isolate the next highest

    temperature region

    Step 3:

    Compare with the hot spot.

Step 3a: If this region is around the hot spot alone then declare Type 1 cases

    (Pain/FNAC/TB)

Step 3b: Else Type 2 cases (Fibroadenoma)

    Step 4:

Quantify the hot spot and terminate the program

    Hot spot (Highest temperature)

Not surrounded by next highesttemperature region. Indeed the nexthighest temperature is spread over

    large regions nearly symmetrical in

    both halves

The output thermographs at different stages of the image processing algorithm for Pain

and swelling case are as shown in Figure 6.

Figure 6a: Pain and swelling (right) thermograph Figure 6b: Hot spot isolation

Figure 6c: Isolating the next highest temperature region Fig 6d: adding 5b & 5c.

From Fig. 6d it is found that hot spot is engulfed in the next highest temperature

region thereby indicating type 1 cases.

The output thermographs at different stages of the image processing algorithm for

fibroadenoma case are as shown in Figure 7.

Figure 7a: fibroadenoma (left) thermograph Figure 7b: Hot spot isolation

Figure 7c: Isolating the next highest temperature region

The next highest temperature region is uniform and symmetrical (from Figure 7c). It

is not restricted to regions around the high temperature region. Hence it belongs to

    Type 2 cases (Fibroadenoma)

    4. CONCLUSION:

From the available database a correlation is obtained from thermograms and based onthat an image processing algorithm was developed to assist decision making process in

breast diseases. However the generality of the algorithm has to be validated.
